“Ings a striker more suited to a bygone age when every team wanted a ‘fox in the box’ type forward, but there’s a reason those type of players went out of vogue like twenty years ago, whilst they themselves will score goals, their overall contribution can be detrimental to the team, for if they’re not scoring then they’re not contributing much else, so can almost be like playing with ten men”

I have deja vu.

Hope he does well! Seems like he has a good attitude and work-rate at the very least.

Interesting. I had totally the opposite view. To me, it sounded like we shouldn't have gone anywhere near him. Still, I'm not disappointed with the signing but then I live under the Sheffield Utd cloud of hope.
Which bits were you reading?? Totally opposite of positive
I should clarify- it was surprisingly positive in the sense that not every single comment was negative, which is what I'd have expected 😂

A lot of should be in a 2 and should be ok if not asked to be lone striker. Given we play 1 striker that doesnt bode well.

Certainly hope it works out as goals are in short supply. I'm not one for slagging a guy off before he even steps over the white line like alot of other "amateur managers", he certainly has the pedigree and if he gives a 100% in that red and white shirt fine by me.

"Bygone age" that certainly describes how the club is run and as for playing with 10 men I thought we already did when Cannon is on the pitch.

This seems more of a wilder signing, he doesn't seem to fit in the, Ai, close down, high press system that was advertised with the new selles era, obviously I hope he does fantastically well, but I'm not convinced at this moment. A lot are saying that he needs a good run in the team and he plays his best in a front 2, I can't see either of those things happening tbh.

“I can’t understand why people talk about Ings as if we’d be getting back the guy who scored 22 goals five years ago. That was a one off season, across his whole career his second best goal return is 12. For all the, “yeah buts,” and the, “oh, well if only they’d played him XYZ,” there’s no getting around the fact that his last four years have yielded a combined 16 league goals, at a steadily declining rate.”

Now this, this is what I was talking about in the other thread on him. I'm not opposed to the signing at all and we need experience...but folk saying "He's been banging in goals for years", he really hasn't- look at his record, he's basically had 2 prolific seasons in a looooooong career. I hope he goes great but he's scored 1 in 4 across his career, for an out and out goalscorer he hasn't actually scored that many goals.

The worry is that Cannon and Ings are quite similar and neither will get the service they need or contribute in a way the same system demands. Play one upfront and that striker needs to be able to hold the ball up with a defender behind him, compete in the air and be mobile all the time. Stand still and it's a defender's field day.

Most of the negative stuff was from West Ham fans.

My observation was how mixed the comments were.
Some pretty extreme negative stuff but also some really positive stuff too…..so I’ve no idea what to expect now.

At least its an option off the bench for Campbell.

Not expecting him to start, but someone to turn to if its not working or he gets injured.

in fairness it is a negative view. but then forest where calling bindon the 2nd coming of maldini & he's been awful. so who knows currently

We'll introduce him to a whole new world of injury and severely handicap any scoring ability he may have had when he arrived.
