Were Palace deliberately kicking the ball at the ref when we closed them down, in order to gain a free kick as per the new rule?

I must admit I remarked that I’d never seen the ball hit the ref so many times in one match.

It never occurred to me it was deliberate but I’ve just heard Nick, a SUFC fan suggest it was deliberate on the Durham show on Talksporr.

If it was indeed deliberate it’s an abuse of the meaning of the rule and must be put a stop to, otherwise it’ll become farcical with the ref having to duck and dive every match and players gaining unwarranted free kicks in dangerous positions by cheating.

I’ve thought the same since I heard about this daft new rule. If you’re advancing with the ball and are outnumbered by the opposing defence, why not pop one at the ref and have a free kick instead?

I think it’s a fair enough rule, you don’t want to see goals scored after the ball hits the ref and possession changes.

I can’t see how it would ever become a tactic but if it did, no doubt a rule would be introduced to stop deliberately hitting the ref with the ball.

I'm not sure about sunday but this rule will be abused before the season is out. These guys have nothing better to do 24/7 than think up ways to gain any advantage and this daft change will be exploited

Drop ball

It has to be said that drop balls of the past could get pretty vicious with legs swinging wildly.

Now, instead of a tussle that resembled a shin-kicking competition, the ball will go to the team that played the ball before the referee stopped play.

On many occasions, this rule will be used when a ball accidentally hits the referee, but only if a team gets an advantage from the ref's touch.

However, in the event that the referee accidently knocks the ball into the goal in the penalty area, a goal won't be given and neither will a drop ball.

Instead the ball will be given to the goalkeeper to re-start play.


Cant see an advantage myself you'd have to play it off a Ref to the advantage to the defending team to get a free kick.

That's exactly what happened on Sunday,i thought it was deliberate at the time.We defended with eight and it got very congested,they ran out of options and ideas,i think we may see this quite often.

Don't see what people are moaning about personally.

I might be wrong, but I think the first time it happened they were knocking a ball out to their left wing our half when it hit the ref and we intercepted it. We gained an advantage from it, so the ref brough it back for a drop ball and Palace played it out to their left wing. Ended up pretty much the same as if it had never hit the ref. No real advantage gained for either team.

As with the contrived back-pass rule (i.e. where you chip it up to head it back to the keeper) anyone abusing this rule will get booked.

It does seem to have the potential for exploitation. For example if you’re applying a high press to try and force a mistake it’s almost a get out of jail free and reset the game
