Bottom line is you just don’t see where the goals are going to come from. We create precious little thanks to ponderous & slow build up & then up front we’ve got Campbell who doesn’t give two fucks & Canon who’s the biggest fraud I’ve ever seen in a Blades shirt. He’s slow, weak, & has no pace. Bleak.

This.
I don’t get the trend.
It merely boxes you in, unless you have players that can outpace anyone for the whole length of the pitch.

What help is CO’H going to provide in a defensive set piece capacity?
Get him out there to occupy at least one defender.

(Mind you, I could say that about the help bit related to all our CB and FB at the moment 😳)
Like you, I cannot understand the benefits of pulling everyone back for a corner, apparently Alex Ferguson liked to do this.
As you say if you leave everyone back you have no-one to hit the other team on the break. They usually leave 1 back plus the keeper so they regain possession and go again.
With so much focus on stats these days just simple maths will show that 11 defenders v 9 attackers have less chance of winning possession than 10 v 8 and they have less chance than 9 v 7 and so on. In theory if you left 8 players upfield when defending a corner the opposition would have to leave 9 defenders plus the keeper back so you would have 2 defenders plus your keeper to deal with a solitary attacker. Whilst I can't see anyone doing something so extreme I would always leave at least 2 up, one right side the other left which would not only improve your chances of clearing the corner but give you a decent chance of winning possession upfield and setting up an attack.

There's nothing wrong with bringing everyone back for corners as long as you have a few players with pace. It makes the other side bring all their players forward. We use it to our advantage. As soon as we get the ball we swarm forward. There's no defence in place so it becomes much easier to score than when a defence is well organised. If the other side doesn't have players with pace we outnumber those trying to defend.

This is when we find out how good Wilder is. He has a couple of weeks to work with the players without any games. We all know he can do it when he has the better players. You still have a top half squad minimum. Put Hamer in the middle of the park and build the team around him.
