Given a free choice who would fit us best?

Gallagher
Would go well with Sharp, big man small man.
Would go well with Clarke as Clarke isn’t slow and could play off him.
Might not gel with McGoldrick or Woodburn as both play a bit behind.
In air good.
Pace average.
Scoring 19 in 81 last 2 seasons in Championship.

Wells
Would go well with McGoldrick and Woodburn feeding his pace.
Would go well with Clarke, Leon being more of an all rounder.
Wouldn’t go well with Sharp, no presence or vision in that duo.
In air poor.
Pace very good.
Scoring 49 in 153 in Championship.

Assombalonga
Would seem to be an all rounder who could go with any. Though not tall, has decent pace and strength.
In air ok
Pace good.
Scoring 43 in 107 in Championship.

Depending on what we go for we could be alienating other players. At about 5’7” I don’t see Billy and Nahki wells being a duo but I see all the others working with him. He might help give other options to the midfield too. I also don’t see McGoldrick or Woodburn and Gallagher making a pair either with not enough penetration up the pitch though he would take the physical burden off Leon.

Of the three I’d prefer Assombalonga but after Saturday, he may be least likely. Any views? Any other options that could rival the above quality?

We've got absolutely zero chance of signing Assombalonga - Wilder has ruled Wells out previously - Gallagher is known to command a big wage despite only being a loan signing.....I dont think we will see any of them join but I would also be happy with any of them should they.

Where has this Assombalonga link coming from? It's utterly unrealistic. We couldn't get Waghorn, but we could get Assombolonga, give over lol.

Middlesboro paid 15m for him? His wages again would be a problem....and he's first choice striker for them.
Just going on who has been linked on the rumours thread.

On The assumption that Olli is signing today, we now have 3 players who are very adept in playing a killer pass inside the last man, in Duffy, and Woodburn. Therefore it would make sense to have a striker who is sufficiently alert, quick, and deadly enough to take advantage of these opportunities.
After looking at all the names linked and also some names not linked, the name that stands out for me, is Gary Lineker.

Seeing as Wilder appears to have decided Sharp is need of replacement, we could do with a Sharp type player to replace him.
That being a finisher, someone who has that knack of getting into the right place and at least hits the target. But with perhaps the extra pace Sharp never really had.

So out of the three there it would be Wells for me. Although he’s not really got the scoring record of Sharp he’s still a decent finisher but crucially has that Pace.
Shouldn’t be too unrealistic in terms of Salary, unlike the Assombalonga rumour which is frankly ridiculous.
May as well have put Messi

Wells is everything we lack. Direct, quick and skilful.

He'd be the perfect signing. I can't believe it's a realistic one. Then again, I didn't think Norwood would be.

I think I'd agree with you on balance mate.

Assambalonga is not going to happen, unless Boro bring in three better forwards. I think Wilder wants a bigger type to compete with Leon, based on us signing Hanson two seasons ago and Donaldson last season. You've got McGoldrick and/or Billy to play off Leon or Woodburn to play off Leon as we did last season with Brooks. So surely its likely to be a Gallagher type but Wells would be quality, if he's still the player he was.

I still wouldn't be surprised if we sign Cameron Jerome, but many won't want that, although I think he'd be a decent signing.

If it came down to it, I'd be fine with signing Jerome. Not exactly what we need, but I feel like we'd undoubtedly have stronger depth up front than last season if he signed.

First of all, completely disregard Assombalonga because that's a joke rumour.

We need another big man. Somebody who can play up front on his own. So Gallagher.

Yes I would like pace as well but we've fucked ourselves there by not getting permanent deals done before the deadline. We now only have space for one striker signing if we're signing Johnson and Norwood. So we have to pick one or the other, and it has to be a target man type for me.

There will be strikers who can tick both boxes but they'll be hard to sign.

Can anyone tell me where I can buy a set of Blades Rumours Top Trumps cards? It looks fun...

Solanke at Liverpool would be a great shout if Ings hadn't gone to Southampton as he'd be 4th choice striker, possibly 5th if you include Salah. He'd be perfect too.

But got to admit I'm struggling past that. I think we need pace AND a big man, so it's very hard to find.

I'd possibly go back to Brighton for Tomer Hemed or Obbi Oulare at Watford.
Conor Wickham probably be let out by Palace, would be a fantastic signing if not for his chequered injury history.

Tomer Hemed's a great shout and can see us going for him. Less keen on Wickham for the reason you said.

Collin Quaner wasn't in Huddersfield's squad.

He's 6 foot 3 and very quick. He'd tick both boxes. Maybe not prolific, but he'd add a lot to our forward line.

Remember how effective Donaldson was away from home? Quaner could do the same, and more.

If Dominic Solanke was made available to loan, we'd probably be the 15th in the queue.

Then when it was down to 15th, we'd have to pull out based on the wages. He's on silly money there.

Would've thought we'd be far down the queue for Woodburn too
I think we're an attractive championship proposition, but he'd probably end up in one of europes other top 5 leagues on loan instead if he was available.
