If you are going to give Liverpool the title based on forecasting what would be likely to happen if the games were played, then surely you have to apply the same logic to the rest of the teams?
Based on results to date, it is 'likely' we will get a result at Villa, which would put us at least into 6th with no other games played.
Then you logically have to look at what could/should be expected to happen in the rest of the games for all other clubs.
You only need to look as far as Lawro to realise just how daft it would be to base the season's finishing positions on forecasts.
Remember the old pools panel? That didn't last did it?
IMO, the only way to be fair (and even this will throw up different results to what might originally have been, due to the behind closed doors thing/less rest between games so fitter teams will benefit etc) is to complete the games.
 
It’s on sky, suggestion would be that the league would be reduced back to 20 over a couple of seasons etc

Liverpool are champions regardless of what happens, as a side note I’m amazed that’s even being discussed

As long as we get a European spot, hopefully based on FA cup being scrapped then that’s my main concern

I personally don’t see why Liverpool are being used in various discussions, they should be given the title because they are so far ahead with only a small amount of games left, if it was a 5 point gap then no you can’t hand out titles

for me it’s the European spots and relegation that they need to look at and how they sort that out, I agree with you that with these it would be unfair to try and forecast

Wouldn’t it need a two thirds majority of Premier League clubs to agree to a 22 club season in order for it happen?

I can see clubs not accepting it e.g. clubs in Europe not wanting extra matches, clubs not wanting a reduced share of TV money etc.
 
Typical that the EPL are increasing the size of the league to avoid potential court claims against them yet in 2008 they refused to accept Kevin McCabe's proposal that we stayed up over the Tevez affair to avoid similar action and it was rejected out of hand.

The proposal quoted in the Mail would be ridiculous as there is no way the majority of the EPL Clubs will vote for 5 teams being relegated next season. This is too much of a financial risk.

The solution is simple but the EPL will not go with it.

1. Declare the 2019/20 fixtures a 29 game season.

2. Any team that has completed 28 fixtures to only play their game in hand behind closed doors if it affects the title, a European Place or relegation.

3. Once these games are completed declare the season over. Award the title, Champions and Europa League places and relegate the bottom three.

This will result in the need for only 1 fixture to be completed Aston Villa v Sheffield United.

Villa to see if they can avoid relegation with Narwich and Bournemouth and the Blades to see if they can pip Newton Green to a Champions League place.

As far as the Championship and League 1 are concerned declare 37 and 35 game seasons respectively. No play offs mean the top three are promoted and bottom three are relegated. Only 1 team would seem to have a case for playing their game in hand to avoid relegation and that is Tranmere but they would need to win by a cricket score.

In league two a 37 game season with Cheltenham having to play their game in hand to see if they could pip Exeter for promotion.

In short potentially as little as three games behind closed doors to sort out all the leagues at a declared cut off point of games played.

As this benefits the Blades at the expense of Man U there is no way the EPL will agree to this preferring a buggers muddle to logic and the thought of that pesky Sheffield United lowering the tone of the Champions League. Remember Piggy Richards is at the EPL.

apparently it was done in 95 according to Sky( no I can’t remember it either) but it happened

but if it avoids any legal suits it might be preferable

Sadly we live in a world where journalists are a bunch of sensation seeking wankers and we have to cross-reference stories to get the truth.

As an example; this week CW was interviewed about coronavirus, the interview is on the club website and you tube.

Paraphrasing; football is nothing without fans ….. football behind closed doors is a bad idea …. Best option would be to suspend the season…..

The BBC accurately reported this on News at Ten, Calendar took a 3 second soundbite,” Best option would be to suspend the season”, and made up a whole story under the headline Chris Wilder calls for season to be suspended.

No he did not, he gave an opinion.

I’m not defending the BBC I’m just saying when journalists aren’t making things up they are taking quotes out of context to put their own spin on a story.

That's a good point BB, maybe they should decide who wins the FA Cup as well!! :)
 
Just play the games whenever it's safe to do so. Even if it goes into next year. The season must be completed. Then maybe delay the start of next season.
This would be an ideal time to restructure and make football have it's close season in winter, which although a radical idea, might be better.

just read the article & (assuming this is a serious possibilty) as i see it, this would mean we qualify for the Europa League.
Another quandry!! Would we settle for that or do we insist on playing the game in hand (behind closed doors) over Villa & possibly Champions League??

As I see it this would mean we qualify for the Europa League.
