Wednesday ‘firm’

I lived at Loxley for a few years back in the early 80s and copped for it on the bus a couple of times ,mainly by a dick called Ebby and his cronies until one Sunday night a lad a couple of years older than me at school happened to be on the last number 14 from Pond St with some other mates. 5 of them got on at Hillsboro corner ,by Malin Bridge they were back off covered in blood and snot. I never had a problem again ,in fact it developed to a nod.
About twenty years ago I was walking with my cousin who happens to be a Wednesday Boy (we all have our crosses to bear) when this fucking knuckle dragging ape walked up to us and said “How have the Pigs gone on?” to which I was busting to say “You’ve just watched them you soft cunt” but my cousins body language told me to say otherwise. He then told me that was Ebby as if I’d just met John fucking Gotti. Fuck off you pig turd.

honda jazz mate.. it’s the new rover ;)
Honda Jazz yayss! Now you're talking. I've seen a few of them around here on a sunday. The Toyota Yaris is popular too. Any small Japanese hatchback, that does 746 mpg, has a 0-60 time of about a fortnight, and is a veritable sea of cheap plastic inside, is popular with the older folks for some reason.

Nether Edge is like a walnut whirl, soft on the inside but hard on the edge, as anyone who went to sharrow lane and abbeydale grange will tell you

Let's not make him out to be somebody he's not. I'm sure plenty on here could tell you of him picking on the wrong Blade in the 80s.

I came across the notorious Ebby, living in Hillsborough in my youth all the Blades in the area used to go out together. There was only one pig in our group and maybe 10 Blades. On the last number 13 one Friday night we were all on our way home from drinking in the Museum when Ebby gets on the bus. Oh shit we’re in for it here. However he picked on our pig mate for having the audacity to knock about with Unitedites. The bloke was a complete bellend but there were enough of us that day to keep a lid on it.

Walked down to the Crown about 4:30 stupidly expecting to get sat down for pie and peas. Was absolutely rammed with 2 robocops on the door and two riot vans outside. Walked past the Red Lion and it was the same with more riot vans across the road in the bus lane. Finished up in the White Lion which was empty by comparison.

Thought it might have been Wednesday fans initially given there were no colours to be seen and police presence but couldn’t see them venturing this side of town. Walked past the Red Lion again at 6ish and it had been emptied out, doors shut and police had vanished.

Always some rumour that pig fans are going to turn up somewhere vaguely near the ground. Was in the Sheaf Island eating a breakfast before a Derby 2 years ago and got a text 200 of them were supposed to be turning up there. Suffice to say I got to finish my full English in peace and no beans went flying up the walls.

You had me at 746 mpg. :)

It didn’t shut before as we went in the Crown about 5.30pm and stopped in there until 7.15pm, it was a good atmosphere but it was very full, you couldn’t shift. There was no sign of any pigs whatsoever.
You could have bought me a pint we were at the table under the telly in the Albert rd room. My mates addicted to the moretti in there.

We were in the other room, near the doorway to get out into the beer garden, the morretti was going down a treat but you couldn’t shift. I’ll get you one next time though, honest. :)

Because he has been away a few times he has seen a few things that I wouldn’t really want him to see, but I’ve always looked after him and he knows that he will always be safe with me. The scariest one was getting bricked at Port Vale, but the one that pissed me off was with an obnoxious old couple at Carrow Road who saw him happy and singing after a win, and the woman screeched, “can’t you just shut horrible little child up”, which really annoyed me and upset him so I told them to fuck off to their absolute disgust,
Only to be expected there, Delia's always been like that!

It amazes me people still get off on football violence. All this talk of firms and how hard someone is.

It’s 2018 ffs.

Come off it, its still a big part of the culture and excitement despite being mostly sanitised.

I remember coming out of white hart lane after the 1st leg of the cup semi few years back and loads of 'yids' were waiting and trying to get at us "shouting come on then" etc with a thin line of police holding them back.

Once most of our fans realised what was going on the majority rushed forward and broke through the police line and all the Tottenham fans looked genuinely shocked that they were now exposed and backed off behind the swiftly arriving police.

Was reyt good and took the sour taste of their pen out of my mouth. Point is its all part and parcel.

Who the fuck is Ebby though and why does he have such a crap name?

No it isn't "all part and parcel". For fucks sake, how old are you, 12?

Of course it is. The thousands of books, films articles, urban legends etc demonstrate that amply enough.

The buzzed up testosterone fuelled rivalry between the fans which can spill over into violence is and always has been part of the game long before organised firms of the 70s and 80s.

Im not advocating people fighting at football, far from it, but lets not pretend that darker more primal side of life isn't a big part of what makes the game great. If you want handshakes and middle class politeness go to Twickenham pal.

Not advocating people fighting at football? "Was reyt good and took the sour taste of their pen out of my mouth." I suppose you don't think women and children have any place going to football either - the 70s called and want their hooli back.

You certainly have a cross to bear living over there.
I've worked nearby, didn't do too badly.
One bigoted pig, (who proclaimed at Easter 2017 'only Billy Sharp is good enough for t Championship and he's played for us'), one quieter pig, and the occasional Blade.

Speaking of Sheffield's less pleasant reside nts, anyone remember Esky from our side?
I recall him thinking he was a kind of gang leader over at Rotherham about 1978 the day the wall collapsed.

Bless your young un mate and glad he’s ok.

I know how you feel. As a parent I’ve been taking my kids since they were old enough to sit still (they’re 20 and 17 now and they still don’t sit still!). But you worry as parents that they are going to see and hear things that might upset them. However, you can’t wrap em in cotton wool either and I think it’s also beneficial for them to see another side of life and learn that it’s just how some folk are and learn to live with that.

The most upsetting thing my eldest experienced was in our own home. We were burgled and it terrified him that someone could invade the security of our home. He didn’t sleep well after that for ages.

I didn’t care that they smashed a hole in our door and nicked the telly. Only that they made him feel insecure by doing so.
Yeah my sister and her flat mate were burgled many years ago, they actually disturbed the burglars in the act.
Shook her up so badly.

You seriously think it's ok to go terrifying everyone and risking injury to yourself, not to mention others?
We are in 2018 I thought it was dead that attitude.

There have been hundreds of books, films and articles about Harold Shipman and Dr Crippen.

That doesn’t mean the prospect of being murdered is an essential and exciting part of a trip to the Doctors.

Likewise war, famine, plagues, organised crime. Must be a good thing because we see them on the telly?

There always is going to be a mob of them on London Road, never materialises though
I occasionally go for a few pints in Swillsboro and they are pure comedy gold.

They have a different idea of what a city is, Sheffield consists of Stocksbridge, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, Grenoside, Parsons Cross and they all turn out for a night out in the big city centre...……...Hillsborough corner. Nothing beyond that exists[/QUOTE]

That is pretty much spot-on for the Grunter World View.
When they claim "The City is Ours" they are telling the truth; its just not the city we see as Sheffield - Its the small town as described above.
Truly a Pig Bubble!

I am not a hooligan and never have been. I repeat I am not advocating fighting at football of you actually read what Ive said carefully I described an opportunistic sing off in which the tottenham lads demonstrated they were a set of cowards it was hardly firm v firm.
But you have to admit that the tribal mob mentality is a big part of football still, whether it be gesticulating, martial sounding chants (youre going home in a fucking ambulance/swinging a pig/boxing day???) or creating an intimidating atmosphere around the lane its an inbuilt part of the culture and if it ever went entirely and we were left with a sanitised Arsenal style crowd just chanting the name of the team as its the only appropriate thing to do and then waiting patiently for the away fans to be gone before we trundle off to our car (cos of course we couldnt possibly have had a few beers as alcohol is bad for your liver and it is 2018 after all) then football will be wank. End of.

Its no different to the 'edge' of the night time economy. You know if you go certain venues/streets/pubs groups of lads can end up in a cock of the walk comp and possibly fighting. Its not big and its not clever but just occassionally its great fun. Not to mention inevitable when you add young lads and ale together. I just dont get the holier than thou attitude from some posters on here, I suspect you had boring youths.

They just need to do what they do in Germany, create a large safe standing section where the younger fans (and the young at heart) who want to be tanked up, swear, dish out abuse etc can do so without affecting families etc. The policing over here is far more robust than Germany. Currently that behaviour has moved outside the ground.

Unbelievable. Where does anyone start with that? You keep saying you're not advocating fighting and then go on to advocate fighting. "it's great fun". Do you even know what you're saying? You either chant about violence or you can't have a beer and have to slink off home quietly? Eh?!? Fighting is inevitable when young lads drink? No wonder the UK is in a mess, criminally speaking.
I've managed to attend football matches for decades without any of the stuff you say is necessary, I've managed to go out drinking and clubbing without being a threat to anyone else, no matter how much alcohol I've drunk. According to you, wanting a life without GBH = holier than thou

That's not right. Different, but not more robust. The German police attend games with potential trouble kitted out in riot gear. Hamburg has 3 water cannon lorries parked around the corner and an armoured vehicle that I've seen a couple of times. The threat of violent reaction from the police is far greater in Germany if anything kicks off. The British police look to contain trouble and cordone off groups, the German police wade in.

I was in the Red Lion, it was the young BBC mob who met in there
