Just 'Ollecising' this post. No seriouly I think we really should be looking for a Watford style approach and going down gives up a great opportunity to shake things up. I got poo poo-ed for saying 'can we learn fro Watford', but people were missing the point. The point is that they used a catastrophy (near financial abyss) to change the style and ethos of the club. The result is a much better system.

While it may be a better system for them than it was, they still reported a £2.51 million loss for the first half of the year....

I thought there was something voluntary in place whereby a club couldn't exceed a certain percentage of turnover on wages (something like 70%) but I've just tried googling it and couldn't find anything.

The League already operates a salary cap in Leagues One and Two, with clubs prevented from spending more than 75 per cent of their income on all club wages, or more than 60 per cent on playing salaries. It is not legally binding but has been in place for two years, during which time no club has exceeded the cap.

But yeah... can't see anything binding.

Surely those scrubbers from S6 will be exceeding the cap next season now Uncle Milan is in place and we will because of the stupid long highly paid contracts in place also Donny will because there income is fuck all and the wages are paid for by the board personally*

So thats 3 SY sides all busting a previously unbusted cap.

Breathing space for now: but it's time to move to a more sustainable system

I see United get a bit of breathing space for another year. The sooner we moved to a more sustainable system the better. It may take a year or so, but we really need to be thinking about moving to a place where we have the wage bill as around 60%-70% of turnover. I hope that Wilson is striving for this. It will not be easy, as noone in the right mind will take big earners like Simmo, Collins and Cresswell of our hands and we might even struggle to shift Henderson, Quinn, Evans, Monty, Yeates and Bogdanovic. That's to not even mention some very average players (Kozluk, Doyle, Morgs, Ertl and Taylor) that are likely to be on higher than average Championship wages.

My preference would be to set a cap, though this is not practical at the moment and I see the arguments against it. Sustainability and having a wage bill that reflects what we are bringing in is crucial though. I know that we will be forced to adopt this next season, but we should be welcoming it with open arms.

Maybe but this idea was right, I guess we never got to the 70% target since our owners continued to bale us out but if other clubs had taken this approach football would not be in the mess it now finds itself in.
