Brandy is more of a winger / creator than an out-and-out striker and Grigg only managed 8 in 63 in the previous 2 seasons.

Chill out man:)

Just shows where we are when it comes to signings 2 Walsall Strikers are out of contract we get the lad that scored 7 goals in 34 games and Brentford go for the lad with 20 goals in 45 games last season.

Weir may have other targets in mind we can get on a free. Im sure i read somewhere brentford will have to pay a 300k compensation fee.

Take a look at the Saddlers messageboard.

When the question "who out of Paterson, Brandy and Grigg" would you want to keep the most; the majority went with Paterson and Brandy.

Many felt that Grigg's goal tally was inflated by tap ins and penalties. And being as these are supporters who watched Grigg week in week out, I'm happy to go with their views.

There's no doubt that we need a poacher (and indeed a solid penalty taker), but the point that Grigg is so much more a threat than Brandy is a little bit misleading. Here are some comments from said thread:

Pato and Brandy for me.

Grigg only had the top goalscorer tag because of the penalties he has scored. The same penaltiese Brandy won "because of his skill and fast feet tricking defenders into lunging for him" *cough* diving *cough* non the less when he stays on his feet he's a brilliant player.

Paterson has scored more "propper" goals then Grigg. If Grigg were to go and we kept Brandy and Paterson. Some one else would be able to score Griggs tap ins and penalties I'm sure.

Brandy gave far more than flicks and tricks. Worked his knackers off all over the pitch and decent in the air for a dwawf

Patterson no 1 priority for me by a mile

Then Brandy

As much resentment there is for him, I really hope he is putting pen to paper with us as he is one of the most exciting players for years. Last season whenever we got the ball, I and many others would be instantly to our feet not knowing what genius he would pull off.

Probably going to be for Sheffield United though, money talks.

If we'd signed Messi, somebody would've found a flaw in it somewhere.

definitely, he is to short ;)

The point i was making is 2 players out of contract and we go for the 6 goals and someone else goes for the 20 goals man.

But we also needed a wideman so DW possibly thought Brandy was the better option

Will Grigg has no real outstanding qualities (not quick, not very strong etc) which may prevent him from playing at a better level. We need strikers, but I think we should aim higher.

If you want to concentrate purely on their goal output yes.

It's a bit like Villa fans moaning that they went for Lowton when they could have had Nick Blackman.

Grigg's 20 goals included 8 penalties. How many of the 20 involved assists from Brandy? They are different players. Do we have to make a fuss every time a player signs for another club? We'd have a hundred players if we recruited everyone suggested on Internet forums. Personally I'm hoping for a bigger, more physical centre-forward. I suspect Mr. Where will not be ruffled by this loss - if loss it is! He may not of of'd the slightest interest in the player!

Last season our main problem was creating goal scoring opportunities. As somebody stated in the Porter thread, if he is provided the ball in a good area, he'll take the chance

Exactly, yes we're light upfront but pace, tricky and wing play were surely the biggest deficiencies in the squad last season. Hopefully a striker or two will be coming in but I'm not upset we signed a winger first.

Porter needs a certain type of chance, it means he needs almost perfect chances for him to have a chance. We needed creativity, but also a striker that will turn a half chance into a goal.

I'm not sure we can say with any confidence that Will Grigg is that striker, can we? I think we can do much better. For myself I would much prefer any of:

Higdon
Pope
Clarke

[preferably with Paterson alongside!]

Higdon seemed quite keen on a move when it looked like we might get McCall, hopefully the club have looked into that!

Pope is an odd one, he seemed to take an age to have a breakout season. He did OK at Crewe but has done nothing much of note until last season when he couldn't stop scoring. I think he signed a new contract in January though, so he'd cost us.

It could be worse, we could be Walsall.

I love how people are pretending we didn't want him and have someone better lined up.
The guy is only 21 and scored 20 goals last season for frickin Walsall. Yeah, why would we want him. He's only done it for 1 season, probably turn out to be rubbish. Ironside was only 20 goals behind him last season, not many if you say it quickly. We've obviously got Neymar lined up anyway.

Totally agree with this. Some people are more interested in having him as the scapegoat however.

Fuckin hell fire, the lad hasn't kicked a ball for us yet, the new Manager hasn't taken a game in charge yet. And some folk are reaching for the razor blades and checking when the next train is due to dive under!!

Face facts. We have a limited budget, we can't go throwing compo at clubs for their players and it aint like the good old days of being linked with and bidding for top notch players to boost the squad.

Like someone has said elsewhere on this thread, some Unitedites would still fuckin moan if we signed Messi.

Give the new signings and the manager a chance for fucks sake and if you wanna have a moan about it, come on here next April and compare how Grigg and Brandy have done and how David Weir did as our Manager.

On the other hand, they may have said that cos there wasn't a snowball in hells chance Grigg was going to stay? He'd been rumoured to be going to all number of clubs for the last 6 months.

Paterson just signed for Forest for a fee that could rise to more than 1 million

Loads of players fans reckon we can get are going for around £1m, see also Luke Murphy signing for Leeds yesterday. Our fans still aren't aware of where we're at financially and our ability to attract players. I know I've mentioned Kris Boyd myself but it wouldn't surprise me if he in fact ended up going to a team we couldn't compete against.
