Sorry a bit pedantic, they've had some good solid players over the years and also Davor Suker who was a bit of a flair player but Modric is a one-off. A bit like a Son for Korea, Bale for Wales or Eriksen for Denmark, it will be years before another one comes along.

They had some other great players in the 96-98 team, notably Robert Prosinecki and Zvonmir Boban. Both arguably better than Suker, although probably not Modric. And of course Rakitic now is pretty handy.

You're right with Boban, I remember Prosinecki being a bit of a cheat but also a good player. Point being, they don't have a conveyor belt of Modric's still.

I think we are more like England. England have the worst record on penalty shoot-outs, we have the worst record on play-offs. England/United have been poor in recent years under uninspiring managers, but are for the moment are showing promise under new management. The fans are pessimists, in the light of past failures, but currently seeing hope for the future. They are understandably angry/pessimistic the moment anything goes wrong, out of fear that the bad old days are back. And they don't trust the men at the very top. Is that enough parallels...?
