Can any of the older blades pin point when the rivalry turned nasty?
Was there a particular event?
To transition from 'were all Sheffield sent we? ' to what we have today is some transformation.
Huge question. I would see it as part of the change in behaviour of young people/football fans in the late 60s/early 70s. Having emerged from 2 world wars in 30 years, the late 40s and 50s were periods of optimism, re-building, no appetite for fighting, etc. The Sheffield rivalry is part of a general trend.

It turned, as you put it, in the mid sixties. Around this time Man U started following their team in huge numbers and usually occupied the rear central area of the kop or its equivalent at the away grounds. They then proceeded to chuck cans, bottles, darts and anything they could find at the homes supporters below them. Over the next few years the other clubs started to ape them, either as a counter-force at home matches or to do the same as them at away matches. Thus hooliganism was born and by 1970 it was full on. United and Wednesday just got caught up in the mood of it, there was nothing special about it from a Sheffield angle.

I saw this evolve over a 10 year period so bollocks to what the social commentators try to theorise as the cause, this was it.

Did Archers sport shop on Bramall Lane use to sell Wendy kit, too?
The first shirt my mum bought me was a Wendy shirt  and I think she bought it from Archers.

Blades throwing eggs in the Kop at S6 in September 1966?
The battle between both fans outside and inside the ground before the start of the Lane derby in Sept 1967 (we lost 1-0)

....a young lady autograph hunter would always wear a long woolly scarf (half were red and white, the other half blue and white).

What's it got to do with SwissBlade the Swizzler?

I thought everyone was into peace and love in the 60s!
In most respects the 60s didn't reach Sheffield until...well, I'm not sure the peace and love bit ever got up here. The images of California and Carnaby Street don't reflect 1960s Sheffield.

I see. Topics about half and half scarves go straight over my head (apart from my memory of having seen a half and half scarf worn by this young lady autograph hunter)

I support United but I’d have no problem watching a game at Hillsborough and mingling with their fans. I’m a football fan and find a lot of the tribalism and puerile ‘Pig’ stuff on either side tiresome.
heh .. with the greatest respect.. fuck that ! :D

it’s a running gag. Swiss hates half and half scarves
i never had a choice my great grandfather was at the 1925 cup final .. all our family are blades except 2 cousins who were brought up on the cross.. their dad (my uncle) was a massive blade and it caused much friction
