Genuine question, ive watched us since late 60’s and cannot recal a slower team, we usually have at least 1 quick player but yesterdays team had no pace anywhere, bash and egan are no slouches nither is illiman , but the rest although quite technical , they are pitifully slow

When we went up to the PL it was blatantly obvious we needed to use the PL money to improve our pace and athleticism but unbelievably we did the opposite. This squad is so lacking in the basic attributes needed to compete that it is painful to watch.

Biggest problem yesterday was Berge/Norwood/Hourihane.

They are all a very similar type of player and if we are going to add creativity to the midfield we can't afford to have more than one of those three (I'm not too fussed which one) on the pitch at any given time.

Yesterday we had two of them on for the whole game and surrendered any real attacking threat as a result.

Yesterday against a 70 year old centre back pairing we needed some pace , as it was stearman had the easiest game of the season, he didnt need to break into a sweat

It wasn't just lack of pace yesterday, it was lack of movement as well. There was little or no movement off the ball. Players were just stood around like statues. You can get away with not having pace if you have good movement, as we saw during Wilder's wonder years. Yesterday was woeful. I've seen more movement off the ball by Subbuteo players.

Burke proves pace is not the answer. The quality to control a ball with one touch, cross/pass to a target to retain possession. For the target to put himself in a position to attack a cross, the passing in triangles to have a purpose future phases of the sequence. The overloads not to be at the expense of having people in the box. If we dont have the energy players to take advantage of the overload then dont do it. When all players perform so far below their levels then that is the coaching. Yesterday was a return to turd football.

We want pace play Burke and Mousset?

We have the options.

Brewster is quite quick. As is Ndiaye. RND is allegedly quick.

Not going to have pace when your strike-force has a combined age of 69 and your midfield have a combined age of 187.

Age isn't everything, Vardy has pace and that twat is ancient.

It's not just pace, it's movement, and our midfield hasn't had any of that for far too long. When Berge runs with the ball he doesn't really need pace as he just glides effortlessly past people - only problem is, he never runs with the ball and gets effortlessly dispossessed by people.

We've rarely been a team with pace in my time but if we do get someone genuinely rapid, like a Burke or Campbell, they're usually shit at football.

We still use the Wilder tippy tappy triangles in the opposition box we need players to gain the box and shoot. Look at Brewster's silly backheel in the box to nobody. Shoot the damn thing it might hit someone and bounce in.

Well said

A quick brain on a football field will always beat a non footballing brain that just happens to be able to run quickly.

And even quick players can have slow minds

Pace isn't the problem, it's the slow minds and non footballing personel

Under Porterfield we ended up with a team of slow old men! Withe, Thompson, etc and before them Ray Mcsnail.

As much as people will knock me for this one, Burke should have started yesterday. Yes, he is not very good, but, neither were the rest of em yesterday. We were back in the wilder pass em to death attempt that just does not work against teams battling for their lives.
Quick question, when did a sheff united midfielder score 2 top quality goals? We have a team of good players, derby had a team battlers and a bloody good midfielder.
We need a rocket up our backsides, some ooommmppphhh and a player who can change games.
Let's hope we get a deal done this window, I just know we will sell and attempt with what we have already got.

The midfield 3 that finished the Adkins season ended up being Coutts (the old version) Hammond and Woolford. This group aren’t great or fast but they aren’t as pedestrian and poor as those 3 were at home to Scunny in 2016.

0-4 at home to Scunthorpe trumps anything before or since ? I think they'd all been to a deep sea divers convention and bought the boots.

It must be close, but I remember going into the 2013 Play Offs with a strike force of Cresswell, Porter, Kitson and Ironside.

Also in the team were pace merchants such as Collins, Maguire, Hill, Doyle and Barry Robson.

The Robson team was really slow but this one is definitely up there. I doubt there is a less athletic team in the league.
I genuinely think it's the least athletic in pro football. Burke and MGW are standout athletes. Remove them and it's just average at best as the high point.

The problem we have is that the players who are quick of mind are slow of foot and the ones quick of foot are slow of mind.

It's no good either having one bloke who might be able to pick a pass and spot runs if there's nobody intelligent enough to find the space to start with. They're all Wilder's programmed robots who can only play one way and only do one thing. MGW and Ndiaye are the only players who can do anything that the opposition won't be expecting and guess which two weren't around the squad last season...

There are so many down-sides to list within this squad it's difficult to know where to start.

No team is slower than the Adkins one surely? To think at one point we fielded XIs that included McEverley, Edgar, Hammond, Salmon, Woolford... the list goes on

Oh for those days - we could all have a real proper moan
