Was Paddy McCarthy right

Said it before on here but I think this "denying a goal scoring opportunity" is bollocks. By giving away a penalty you are "giving a goal scoring opportunity" so no red EVER in that circumstance for me, simply a yellow and pen is fair enough.

The whole thing was brought about to stop the cynical chop outside the area, not for stuff inside the box. It's "evolved" into that because the authorities are a bunch of twats. How many decisions don't even end in a penalty because the ref would have to send off the defender and you can't do that to home players at OT, Anfield etc.?
I understand what you're saying and agree in principle, but they would have to change the letter of the law for this to happen.

If for instance you're just about to slot one home from 6 yards out and are took out,the said player only gets a yellow or in some cases nothing i.e Crewe, then whoever takes the penalty misses, where is the punishment?I know the player should have a good chance to score from 12 yards but it's not always the case i.e Crewe and Donny.

There were 3 Blades players around Tyson, should it really have been a red? McCarthy certainly wasn't the last man.

It doesn't matter whether someone is the last man. It matters whether they're denying someone a clear goalscoring opportunity and he definitely did.

That's one of the clearest reds I've seen in ages. I do think it was an accident though and it's good to see he only gets one game for it.

It has to be a red so it's a deterrent. Otherwise, it'd be well worth copping a yellow and a pen if someone was about to score. Surely that's clear from this example, given Howard saved it.

It makes perfect sense being a red for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity in my opinion and it's not one of the laws people really think about changing.

Offside though, now there's a debate...!
