Warnock or Bassett??

Hear Hear - For me Bassett was a far better manager than Warnock, spent his pence far more wisely than Warnock spent his pounds and most of all had the backing of all the Blades fans!

So what exactly was the point in ending your post with the words BLACKWELL OUT?

What you will find if you comprehend what the vast majority of Unitedites think towards Blackwell is that he is doing a decent job under the circumstances. He has had to sell 2 or 3 of his leading players and despite this has got us off to another half-decent start this season and we have a squad that looks solid, strong and has more options that we had last season.

If we was in the bottom 3, or if we finished last season halfway down the table then i could understand it, but whilst things are going well what is the point in writing nonsensical dribble like BLACKWELL OUT.

Totally agree.

I think some people just can't help but stir up the pot with no foundation to base their arguement.

Bassett. We were more screwed when he took over than when Warnock did. Also, he kept us up.

But when he left we were in exactly the same position as when he arrived - bottom of the second level of English football.

Give over, took him one year to get out of the second level, took Warnock the best part of a decade.
He also kept us up for four years, including the greatest escape known to mankind.
Warnock bottled it in the only year we were up.
No contest between the two.

Jack Charlton once said "managers shouldnt stay at a club for more than 5 years". He is correct if the club are not winning trophies. I thought Bassett stayed at BDTBL for a season too long. There were even more unstability at boardroom level in 1995. Paul Woolhouse had done a runner (Lee Strafford reminds me of Woolhouse in some ways- saying things that fans wanted to hear but in reality he didnt really have the money or contacts to take the club further) and Reg Brealey had enough. Bassett wasnt McDonald's kind of manager and didnt give him the funds to buy players. Bassett was unlucky in many ways

I wasn't talking about what happened in the meantime, but it is undeniable that when Bassett left we were in a very bleak position - just as bleak as when he took over.

Both managers gave us highs, and both gave us lows.

The outlook was pretty poor when both managers took over. We were at the bottom of the second tier. Bassett was unable to keep us up, but Warnock did keep us up. Although he had half a season to do it in, compared to Bassett's third of a season.

And at the outset the financial position was very poor for both managers. The difference was that for Bassett it remained poor throughout his tenure, but for Warnock it did improve significantly.

To my mind, Bassett's great achievement was keeping what amounted to a third division setup in the top flight for four seasons. I doubt that any other manager could have done that.

As for the great escape: yes it was great. But, he was the manager when we got ourselves into a position where a great escape became necessary.

I think I would near enough agree to that order. Harris was the manager when I started going to the Lane around 1959/60 so I cannot really comment on managers prior to that but as a manager and a person I would rate Bassett way ahead of Warnock.

Interesting post,I have to agree with you that Harris and Bassett were the best two managers imo.
Surprised you listed Freeman as he was manager 1952 to 1955.
Way before your time Mickle-blade as you are still a young en!
At least its not just my memory that plays tricks.
After Freeman came Joe Mercer, well remembered as he dropped the great Jimmy Hagan.
Haslam below Peters and Robson?
UTB:hello:

when warnock came in we looked like relegation certs

in his press conference he made 3 pledges

to get the crowds up
to finish above wednesday
and get us promoted

he did all 3 even though most blades i know (including myself ) laughed at his bold claims

so warnock for me ,although i had some of my best times as a blade under harry basset but we were always overshadowed by being the poorer cousins of leeds and the pigs

wonder if Bassett fancies anouther go
but this time with money ?

with money he could get us in to the top half of prem in two seasons.
think of the dimonds he could get us.
ah nice to dream :)

No way, his style of management and his style of play wouldnt work nowadays. It would be a disastrous return for him and the club
