I see one of our most gifted ex-players has been tasked with keeping Wimbledon in League 1.

He's even brought Glyn Hodges in to help out :p:D

First job for the Wimbledon board....defend Wally's social media comments

Wonder if his advanced training methods from the old car park gym are still being used. 'Right lads 8 a side, the rules are...there are no fucking rules'

It wasn't that long ago that I remember a manager shortlist of Keith Curle, Wally Downes and Rob Page! For Forest Green you might think?! Then we got David Weir!

I can't see Wally Downes being a manager but he might prove me wrong. I wish them both well of course.

Dave Weir was one of a trio of experts, the others being Jamie Rednap and Graham Souness, on Sky, commenting on the Liverpool - Everton match last Sunday. What a nondescript bland lacklustre man he is. Things is after he became our manager I remember loads on here saying how well he came across during the usual round of venues to meet the fans, how articulate he was etc. Some people are easily impressed

The first time he spoke he was. Then, as he did other similar events, it became clear he was essentially quoting a set script. He just kept repeating the same things, using almost the same words. A good communicator may keep making the same points but will do so in different ways, to get the message across to everyone, because we learn and understand things in different ways.

Hodges world beater at Notts County. A goal so good it made Deano (the original) faint.

Might be wrong but I’m sure he’s spent the last 12 months coaching and developing the game in India with Steve Coppell.
Think he’s had the odd spell managing in India too. Will be interesting to see how he copes managing in the UK.

Wimbledon actually wanted Kevin Nolan but he turned them down. The list of cons for Wally was long and had he not played for the team in the Crazy Gang years he wouldn't have landed an interview. I feel for my mates who support them!

Times have changed. I don't think you can set fire to players kits anymore, or dangle them off ferries by their ankles.

He has been in coaching for a while so I doubt he's been out cold since 1991.

I think that’s what he said in his interview with H&J but I was only half listening. He’s definitely been in India.

My mate who was the bouncer at Josie's told me a few funny stories about Wally. He was always taking the mickey out of people. One or two stories might not be wise for me to post in here. During the 1988-89 season, he was recovering from a broken leg and he said "I was looking forward to a Saturday lie-in with the wife but the phone rang and it was Harry telling me to go to do a scouting report at a football match. The bastard!"

During the Sheffield derby in October 1993, Wally (one of our backroom staff then) was wearing a Russian hat kneeling down behind the advertising hoardings at John Street, shouting instructions etc. During a lull in play (a player was receiving treatment for an injury), Chris Waddle was carrying the ball on the John Street touchline waiting for play to re-start before taking a throw in. Blades fans in the John Street terraces were giving Waddle some stick but Waddle looked at us to show that he wasnt bothered by the heckling and then looked at Wally smiling as if he found that the hat he is wearing is funny before switching his attention towards the injured player on the pitch. Wally then looked at the John Street Terrace and pointed his finger towards Waddle and giving him the wanker sign a few times behind the hoardings. Remember this speedymcgeady ?

True enough. Although Wilder was a footballing right back, whereas Downes was just a clogger.
So was Klopp tbf. Terrible player. I heard Kitson on the radio earlier saying Downes was a great defensive coach. Whether he’s any good as a manager is anyone’s guess but I wonder if they looked at the likes of Wilder and Harris and thought maybe a close connection with the club can make a difference.
