Vinnie Jones - 60 today

He was a good leader, had a very good, direct long throw and he had a decent shot on him, but he had a chronic lack of pace. He beat his own record for fastest booking playing for Chelsea against us in the cup, the same game where Bradders amusingly imitated him by wearing a white headband and then took it off and stamped on it.
Remember Bradders and Whitehouse getting in Vinnie's face in that match!

His Bramall Lane debut was against Leeds and his first away game for Chelsea was at Bramall Lane!
He performatively walked up to our Kop and ripped open his training top to thump our badge.
Had a stinker and we lost 2-0.

I remember my Dad hated Jones as did a lot his age. I think it's because they'd grown up watching TC and Alan Woodward and couldn't stand long ball football as a result. Praise & Grumble used to be a non stop whinge about Bassetts long ball tactics sometimes, despite it getting us back to back promotions.
I remember as a kid seeing a bit of graffiti in town a few months before Bassett got sacked saying ‘Bassett out, football in!”

He doesn't talk about his time with us in any fond manner...

So begrudgingly he was OK..

A good captain when he wasn't massaging his hard man ego..

Wasn't written by a blade I'd say, tough to watch but who doesn't like winning home and away in what seemed like every weekend..

Yeah, as a kid, my Dad would go on endlessly about the style of play. So did others, it really annoyed them. I didn't really get it though, to me United were winning and getting promotions, nothing else mattered.

I'm sure we signed Brian Marwood about the same time we bought Vinnie Jones. I really thought we were serious about making a go of it that season.
They were both introduced to the crowd prior to the Leeds home game. Marwood was a disappointing signing for us.

I disagree it was a ''statement'' signing and he helped us stay up. No problem at all for me. I remember his goal at Villa and his throw ins helping set up goals.

That goal at Villa was a turning point, even though we lost. It was our first goal in about six games - it sparked a pitch invasion and gave us some newfound belief.

Correct, the same day we got rid of Stan. I was sad to seem him go but the right calls.

Can’t comment on the author but if memory serves it was after we’d had that horrendous start to 95/96. Plenty wanted him out by that point.

I think there was always a minority not happy with the football but prepared to keep silent while he was overachieving.

For me in those days it was about playing to our strengths. We had Deane and Agana up top so the plan was get the ball to them as quickly as possible. We didn't have the funds to go out and sign stylish players (apart from Hodges) but what a season that was.
I'm sure when VJ scored with a header from a corner at Villa there were blades fans celebrating in the centre circle or am I dreaming this??

21:15 into this:

A bloke I know used to hang around with Vinnie when he played for us. I think he lived up around Dronfield or Apperknowle way?

Anyway, I always remember the lad saying that Vinnie was a huge gambler, always on the phone to the bookies, in the days before online/mobile phone betting.

As has been said already, people saying Vinnie was scared of Billy Whitehurst, EVERYONE was scared of Billy Whitehurst!

I was involved with a project getting celebrities to the children's hospital at Christmas time. Vinnie Jones came and was brilliant. Phoning round other players to come down. He stayed all day. He was certain we wouldn't go down. Next week we beat forest and the rest is history. No the greatest player, but a leader and a top bloke.

I think there is a softer side to him like was just mentioned by wardonia_blade . I remember in one of his early matches him going over and making a special fuss of the disabled enclosure. He didn’t have to do that.

He wasn’t a brilliant footballer. To a degree we paid 650k for a catapult, as my Dad put it. But he was a leader and he did instill belief in others.

I did find it odd him recalling his time with us and suggesting he was getting man of the match most weeks as that simply wasn’t true.

He didn’t come over all that well when interviewed by YorkBlade once when he insisted on continuing to eat his dessert when he was being interviewed. I just found it a bit rude!

But he did a job and contributed to keeping us up, so in that sense he has my thanks.

He also suggested I'd be a good 'fluffer' in the adult entertainment industry - that was an awkward conversation with my mother afterwards, she'd watched the interview and didn't understand that bit...

Although he was a thug (at times) I thought he should have had more credit than he received. His positioning in midfield was good, read the game well and often picked up loose balls in the middle it was just when he needed to tackle that he was a liability.
I mentioned on another thread that his autobiography 'Vinnie: my life' showed he had a softer side and I felt quite sorry for him regarding his wife's health issues ( Heart transplant).
Yes read his book to , it’s a good read & tells you a lot more about the genuine bloke 👍
