I don't think our problem is going forward. If we strengthen defensively so that the likes of Done - if he remains at LWB - and Brayford/Whiteman can stop worrying so much about leaving the back door open (ooh, err, missus) whenever they go forward, we are quite capable of scoring enough goals. One of the things that worried me last night was Matt Done, who looked dangerous when he got forward on the left, dropped deeper and deeper second half and ended up playing like a full back which, with all respect to him, he is bobbins at. Why is he feeling the need to do that? Because Jay McEveley was playing like a bag of toss, that's why. From as early as the third minute when he dropped Basham in the shit and got him booked with a shocking ball across the back, our so called captain was off the pace big time and this led to Done worrying about the defensive aspect of the game when he's far more effective focused on the offensive. Throw in Hammond not covering the back three well enough at all last night, Coutts not being interested in the defensive side of it and Flynn's powder-puff attempts at tackling and you have a recipe for disaster at the back as the back three are exposed, the wing backs drop deep and then we're relying on magic from Sharp and Adams. When we attacked well, it was because Done was getting forward and Coutts was orchestrating things in the centre but we didn't see enough of that at all.
If Adkins is in charge next season (I think he will be given time), he has got to address this. We need a top quality defensive midfielder who can do the dirty job and can offer a pass or two. Not Hammond, not Doyle, not Montgomery, somebody who can take charge of the middle of the park and stop players like Jack Payne running at our backline. As an aside, we should go and get Payne, he'd be a great addition. Throw in big, strong central defenders - none of the three last night are up to it, Bash is the best of a bad bunch - and we might be able to encourage Done and Brayford/Whiteman to get forward instead of dropping back. I'd also suggest that Flynn, who I believe has a year option on his contract, should be used as a right wing back if he is here next year rather than as a central midfielder. For me, we need a new back three and three central midfielders to be competitive next season.
