No? Really? Where? Seriously, can you name us one or two "crackin' pubs" in Hull? I can't think of any! I was there a few months ago and to give Hull some credit, the area around the docks has sprung up a few trendy little bars and cafes - benefited from the city of culture monies no doubt. But the rest of the city is dire - right down to the plastic lego daffodils in the precinct. I spent many years working in and around Hull when I was a lad and it has to be the worst city, of its size, of any in the country. As for Hull City...I'd cut them a bit of slack purely because they are a Yorkshire team, but I've always seen them as a second or third division outfit and that's where they will end up next season - third division - League 1.

Hulls natural rival has to be Grimsby just other side of the river ,two towns that at times have a stink about them that makes gerts knickers almost rose like

my neighbours are Hull season ticket holders, they are of the opinion that Hull are dog pooh and are not optimistic about their chances tomorrow. Not impressed with Slutsky saying we are nothing special. Maybe we aren't, but we have big hearts.

Back in the late 1980s I visited a mate who lived in Hull, and we had many beers in pubs down by the docks, including one that filled up abruptly with Morris Dancers sporting twigs and bells, celebrating some allegedly ancient English festival we'd never heard of. Half an hour later, the place filled with skinheads sporting swastika tattoos celebrating extreme violence against anyone who wasn't them. At this point we twigged it was a boozer of a certain kind, and left. Quite quickly, as I recall.

The mate I was visiting was a Hull fan. He died suddenly, in his mid-40s, 6 years ago next week, and I miss him terribly. We went to many Hull games together over the years, including several at Boothferry Park (yet another grand old football ground erased from the history of our game by yet another hyperplastic megabowl). So I'm probably alone on here, in always thinking quite fondly of HCFC.

Still hope we smash em tomorrow, mind.

Try The Olde White Hart and the Olde Black Boy, both excellent if you like your ale real.
