I think the reason there are an extra couple of rows in the BLLT is because the ground is not a true oblong and is not due to any slope. If you look at the space behind the goal at the BL end it is wider towards the Bramall Lane and Cherry Street corner than it is towards the Bramall Lane and John Street corner. I can't see any photos that confirm this clearly, but I am sure that is the case.

I've found this diagram of the ground. If you look at the white strip behind the Bramall Lane goal it is wider towards the South Stand than it is towards the John Street stand. All the other white strips around the rest of the ground are parallel

Yeah I've always thought it was just for vehicle access reasons because that's around where the ambulances used to be when I started going, don't want vehicles driving on the pitch if they're required to be used so need a wider area for them to manoeuvre in. The unlevel pitch just made me wonder.

Not ambulances. It's for the new model Renault 5 to be driven around the track at half time.

I thought it was something to do with the old cricket pitch, the Bramall Lane stand being slightly angled so you could get a better view of the wicket.

The pitch has always sloped towards John Street, especially the half towards the Kop. It is less pronounced these days, but still appears to fall away towards John Street in the Kop half of the pitch. The drop of 6 ft mentioned on here is way off the mark. A few inches, or up to a foot at one time, is more accurate. Today, very little.

Might email John Garrett and ask him (don't know if that's in his wheelhouse though). It's an interesting subject, I've been trying to work out where pitch level is because the thought of digging down instead of building up intrigues me.

When I stood on the pitch it looked flat to me, but what really struck me was how bloody big it was compared to the pitches I played on - I swear they were half the size at best!

I have had the good fortune to play twice at The Lane & I can't say I noticed much of a slope, you certainly don't feel it running around. Oh, & scoring at the Kop end is a wonderful feeling even if there wasn't many spectators.

Walk down Bramall lane (the street outside) and there is a very definite slope from the Railway to the Crics. Strangely enough, the slope on Shoreham Street is in the other direction with the John Street corner being higher than Cherry Street, this is obvious looking up at the back of the Kop.

So we have a slight slope. Big deal and I still think DirtyLeeds are twats.

The slope is about 3ft from Tony Currie stand to John Street, it would be imperceptible really when playing across it.

The slope was more noticeable apparently when the cricket ground was in place, Fred Trueman spoke about bowling “down the hill” from the Pavillion end at Bramall Lane when commentating on radio years ago at a test match.
