As nobody else has put one on yet, thought I'd give a brief view on yesterdays game, look forward to your views on this. Opening 15-20 minutes we were very good and completely bossed the game, got the goal we deserved and even my mate next to me who I took along commented on how poor Walsall looked (how it all changed!) we seemed to go into our shells and hide away for the rest of the first half and this carried on into the 2nd half, we could have quite easily lost the game about 4-1 in the end if Walsall hadn't fluffed a couple of chances in the last 10 mins or so. There was just a complete lack of quality on show, and we always seemed to be 2nd to loose balls and the midfield became non existent! quite a disappointing showing in the end from a team that should have been pretty confident after a good unbeaten run.

Long 6/10 didn't have that many saves to make really!
McMahon 4/10 thought he was shocking, poor distributions and his decision making is terrible.
Maguire 7/10 very solid first half, didn't give their attackers a sniff, fell off abit 2nd half with giving the pen away and letting them get in behind for the 2nd.
Collins 6/10 think we need a better quality CB if we are to progress, although he didn't really do much wrong you always get the feeling there's a mistake going to be made somewhere.
Hill 6/10 steady enough but again not great, too many hoofs up the field to no-one in particular as well
Coady 5/10 never really in the game, maybe this was due to him played out of position? surprised he was kept on for the full 90 mins.
McGinn 4/10 very poor, lost most of the midfield battles and hardly offered anything most of the game, maybe its time to try someone like Cuvelier in the centre?
Doyle 5/10 a lot of the problem was we were losing the midfield battle and giving them far too much space, their number 25 in particular (Sawyers) who ran the show for them, how he wasn't man of the match I don't know! also when we went 2-1 down there just didn't seem any leadership, need a captain to gee up the players t get back into it, but this seemed non existent.
Flynn 6/10 he tries hard and gets into some good positions but his complete lack of confidence and willingness to take a man on is pretty poor for a so called winger.
Baxter 6/10 looked really sharp in the opening spell of the game but then seemed to go missing, however think he's our most key player if we're to get up the league (jose baxter baby!)
Porter 6/10 won most headers in the opening spell and took good goal, but then after was never really in the game and just never looks much of a goal threat.

Subs
Murphy - looked lively when came on and actually wanted to run at the full back and take him on, still surprised that on his recent form he didn't start the game.
Miller - tried to get into the game but never really looked a threat, fear that the injury he suffered has knocked him back a long way.
Brandy - only given about 5 mins but should have been on much sooner, even when score was 1-1 the game was crying out for someone like him to be introduced.

So onto the Villa game, I hope Clough will see this game to give the likes of Brandy, Cuvelier a start and see what they can do, think its the ideal opportunity for the likes of these to stake a claim for places in the league team.
Thoughts anyone?!

Agree with most of that, I would probably give Doyle a point more, he was definitely more effective than Coady on the day at breaking up play, which was just about all our midfield did after 20 minutes. Walsall's midfield was miles ahead of ours, there was anticipation, movement, touch and vision, you're right, it could easily have been more.

Harry 7 out of 10 - (fell off abit 2nd half with giving the pen away and letting them get in behind for the 2nd.)

Collins 6 out of 10 - ( although he didn't really do much wrong you always get the feeling there's a mistake going to be made somewhere)

Seems a bit unfair to me. A bit like giving a penalty because the Sheffield centre half intended to foul Steve

A defender who is culpable for both goals doesn't get 7/10!!

A Bladey, Bladey, Good Old Harry, Bladey mark I'm afraid.

Don't think so. It seems to be Flynn who gave away the penalty, and the through ball for the second was placed between Collins and Hill. Our midfielders gave them far too much space though.

Cheers for your report. It can often be difficult to spot, but from Clough's comments (and MBoreman 's post) it seems the starting formation was 3-5-2, and that was probably the reason why Murphy was dropped).

Yes but Maguire was marked 7/10 in the genuine belief that he was responsible for both goals. That is risible.

As for the penalty, ridiculous! The Walsall player quite deliberately threw himself to the ground prior to any contact with Flynn, if indeed there was any contact at all. The player is a cheat: the ref a buffoon.

All players are cheats, all referees are buffoons but what can you expect? The so called Premier League is rife with divers and con artists, the referees are paid so well and instructed not to rock the boat being steered by Sky TV such that the game is becoming little more than pantomime.

It was bad enough when the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo were being lauded as the worlds greatest footballers, when he was nothing more than an over protected show pony with a tendency to dive with or without contact being made. To think that that kind of chicanery has even infiltrated the pub league that we currently play in is a sad indictment of what once was the beautiful game.

Real football is dying on its arse if you ask me, and every time a talentless cheating little bastard like the scumbag who took the dive for the Walsall winner is rewarded by proving to be the match winner just makes me hate the modern game even more.

At the game, the ref clearly pointed to Maguire as the one who pushed. He did this two or three times as he was explaining his decision to the players

What about managers who think getting a long contract for a player or himself is more important than delivering silverware for the fans.

I agree that 7 seems generous for someone who has effectively lost us the match, and Collins does nothing wrong and gets only 6.

But how can it be a "Bladey" mark when he supports Wednesday?

Maguire didn't "effectively lose us the match". He had a harsh decision given against him.

I've only watched the highlights but from those, Collins is almost as culpable as Hill for Walsall's second. Worse, though, is the fact that he doesn't chase back and get goalside of the other attacker - had Long parried Chambers' shot it would have been a very avoidable tap in for the Walsall forward.

Collins has been way below par for most of the season.

Maguire and Long seem to enjoy special status amongst some of us. The uncomfortable truth is that both have a very great deal to learn.

I was just behind the goal and Maguire looked to have given him a push with both hands, something he often does from corners and generally gets away with. If the ref is looking at him and one who doesn't like this, it's always going to result in a penalty.

As bartman says, the ref pointed out that it was Maguire in giving the decision.

Whilst it was fairly soft (and I've not seen the replay), I could see why it was given.

I dont disagree that they need to improve and I hope they both do but for christ's sake give them a break, they are both young lads who've come through the club and they are some way off being the worst members of the squad.

That is right. The Maguire family were all Wendy season ticket holders. Typical of Pinchy to make narrow minded comments without checking the facts!

I have sat down, zoomed it up and studied it very closely again and again. From the photo below you can clearly see what appalling video quality we get on the League One highlights.

Indeed :)

I trust my eyes and I saw Maguire with both arms extended in a pushing motion as the man went down, I assume from his description to the players, this is what the referee also saw.

The annoying thing is, there was no need as the ball was going nowhere near him anyway.

It was ShropshireBlade who stated that Maguire's performance fell away, (quote) "giving the pen away and letting them get in behind for the 2nd." And it was also him who stated that Collins (quote) "didn't really do much wrong".

In light of those comments I just highlighted what appeared to be unfair marking.

Whether or not Collins has been below par for most of the season has absolutely no relevance at all when judging his performance in this match. You cannot mark someone down because of what he may have done (or not done) in previous matches, or because you think (quote) "there's a mistake going to be made somewhere".
