Got to agree with this. Sheffield has it's faults, but I realise how lucky I am to call this area home every time I come back. Over the last few years I've got into hiking and more recently cycling and without fail when I'm home I'm out doing one or both.

From Sheffield, Manchester and (dirty) Leeds you're only a few minutes from the city centre to the stunning countryside, but Sheffield has the added bonus of being so green and hilly within the city too.

We can argue about our two shite football teams seemingly left behind by the world of football and it's all our own fault, but the city itself and surrounding area is a fantastic place to live.

But with the Tour De France starting from Yorkshire next year and coming right into Sheffield from the stunning countryside surrounding the city there will be helicopter shots and scenic action shots beamed all around the world! Not to mention the thousands that the Tour attracts to each stage. Just as an example at the Olympics 1million lined the streets for the time trial, not expecting that level for the tour, but the tour is the most watched event after the World Cup and the Olympics, so people will see Sheffield.

But with the Tour De France starting from Yorkshire next year and coming right into Sheffield from the stunning countryside surrounding the city there will be helicopter shots and scenic action shots beamed all around the world! And Sheffield is not a pretty sight just about every area in the inner city is full of immigrants and their foreign culture, every other major city near us has an airport, good rail links and a 3 lane motorway coming close to the city centre where we have a closed down city airport which no longer can even boast a Police helicopter, we also have the slowest rail link in the country and the crumbling Sheffield Parkway to bring in visitors. We have an anti car council who think it is the way forwards to put speed humps on parts of the inner ring road, the same council who are set on demolishing sporting facilities that have still not been paid for. Small minded thinking is the norm in this city from the council to the football clubs no wonder others call us the biggest village in England.
Back to the Tour de France it is starting in Leeds ................. once again we are an after thought, second best again.

Glasgow does not have a large immigrant community. There is a predominantly Bangladeshi community in Pollockshields (aka Banglashields) and apart from the Irish (who are part of the British Isles) that is it. Of course it has student populations but immigrants, not really. Nothing on the proportion to be found in Manchester, Birmingham, London.

I suppose it depends which immigrants you are talking about as well. For instance Somalis have a very high rate of benefit claims per head and are known to be lazy feckers, where on the other hand Polish, Hungarian Eastern Europeans are very hard working and want to succeed. With Albanians and Romanians top of the league in the capital for pick pocketing.

Holland was at the forefront of multiculturalism for years and has all but done a U turn and decided it just doesn't work with new immigrants now having to speak Flemish before being allowed entry. They've had enough of free loaders and criminals.

Are you serious, the moment these eastern Europeans step off the plane they become eligible for free health care on the NHS and every other benefit going, what actually have they ever contributed to this country ? When they do find work most of their wages are sent straight back to Poland or wherever awaiting their return as rich men in their homeland, leeches spring to mind. Now if we had a immigration policy like Australia things could be different.

On the immigrants issue, you refer later on to people going back to Poland. Do you mean Immigrants or people from Poland? The two are completely different.

Sheffield, I think is getting better but it does need economic boosts. The TdF is a very small one and was in response to an earlier post about nobody seeing or knowing about Sheffield. Sure the TdF will starting Leeds but it finishes it's Yorkshire section in Sheffield (although why it has to go to London is beyond me when it's supposed to be a Yorkshire depart)

Just in case anyone, anywhere thinks Racism is a dying art please cut and paste this diatribe straight from the pages of an English Defence League/Daily Mail subscriber. Its utter misinformed bollocks of the highest order.

Sheffield is a mess for 101 reasons, non of them to do with immigration. Mismanagement of immigration perhaps, but it is utterly crazy to blame immigrants for Sheffields plight. I would start with certain elements inability to work beyond 4pm, to come in Saturday morning and work on your car rather than your paid job, still taking overtime. Finishing at lunchtime on a Friday, the cities inability to accept any change of any nature (see posters comments for an example).

Then there is the councils ability to fuck up even the most gilt edged opportunity. Airports built too small to take proper planes on them, stadiums built on the cheap with no plan with what to do with them, a road system that does its level best to stop you getting from a to b.

How many UK nationals who've never contributed to NI or income tax are we currently providing with benefits, credits and free health care and how much does that cost?
