There is a decent article on the guardian website about why the margin for var offsides needs to be 20cm. Basically some maths professor has said what people on here said after the spurs game. Ie the frame speed used means that a player can move 15cm between frames, which means presumably if players are moving in the opposite direction the this will double. The line drawn also has a margin of error assuming the goal line isn't drawn using a laser. In addition the moment the ball leaves the foot is impossible to pinpoint as the ball becomes concave when it is kicked. In short, like any measuring system it has a margin of error. In this case way above what is currently used whereby having a japs eye over the arbitrary line is seen as a clear and obvious error.

Football can learn a lot from cricket when it comes to the use of this type of technology .

Each team should be allowed to make one appeal in each half , with the first one being carried forward if not used .

In addition , the referee should have the right to call for it on any critical decisions he is not sure about . In these situations , if the evidence is not 100 % clear cut then his original decision should stand .

In any other situations , VAR should shut the fuck up .

All that needs to happen is:

a) Linesmen do not put their flag up for anything other than ins or outs. Ever. Similar for refs, if you think a foul is marginal, let play continue and have VAR sort it out later
b) Speed up the process and better communicate to everyone what the hell is going on

Fix those two things and more or less all the problems people perceive with VAR instantly go away
