We’ve done shit like this before and it’s a bit cringey.
Things will only change when it happens to a media luvvy top 4 side in a high profile game. That’s when there’ll be a general appetite for change and when we should jump on the bandwagon. By doing it now, we only look like sore losers - hence all the “play to the whistle” bollox that’s been aimed at us today.
We should also be prepared to condemn VAR even when the errors go in our favour.

I’ve seen loads of posts condemning it prior to last night..so instead of moaning about it sign the fucker if u value football, it’s only been up 20 mins and gaining a bit of traction

I’ve seen hundreds of posts on here about VAR, so I thought I’d start a petition, let’s as fans of football as a whole try and get it suspended at least until they get the consistency right!!

I’m torn here, I’m not particularly anti-VAR. mainly because of 2 separate incidents I saw on Sunday and Monday night. One at Leicester, a penalty is correctly not given. The other at Preston, where if VAR was used, would also have been ruled out. The latter cost a team a point and gave a rival 3.

How would we feel if a last minute dive like West Brom’s meant we lost to say Villa. Fuming.

I think the club should contact the EPL (or whoever the ref body is) to ask for public clarity over that incident last night. The response would obviously be ‘play to the whistle’ a hated comment amongst many Blades fans, but official clarity should dispel the previous instructions (according to Wilder) that a Lino only flags for a 100% decision. Far more concerning to me was the Jota incident. Where the ref blows but they then VAR the fallout after he’s blown to stop the game.

It can’t now be suspended, it has been used too much this season. But they do need to get their shit together by next Saturday and publish what it will and won’t be used for. I would sign that petition.

It depends what you mean by ‘VAR’. The video assistant referee was not wrong last night, Carroll was not offside and therefore a goal should have been give. However, VAR doesn’t necessarily just mean ‘looking at the incident back on the video’. VAR comes with it’s own set of rules, which were very inconsistent during the game last night. I’ve said before, I had no real issue with the goal as it was shown to be correct. My issue is with the fact that there were 5 offsides in the game and in each of them the referee blew his whistle straight after the assistant referee lifted his flag. The only time he didn’t was when they scored. What was different in that particular situation?

So to sum up, VAR may have been right but everything else it brings was very, very wrong.

I think VAR is a positive in theory.....before VAR there were mistakes made every match.....often with favouritism towards the biggest clubs.
Its the implementation and consistency that the problem.

It feels like in these first few months the teams playing are guinea pigs.
I’m hoping and expecting that most of these issues will be ironed out for next season.

“VAR the technology is good in principle, it’s the operational elements that are ruining the game with inconsistencies, human interpretation of the rules and confusion, it’s actually sucking the life out of the game, we need to stand together and get VAR put on hold until robust practice and operational procedures have been put in place, we are putting the enjoyment of the game at risk here, the game is for the fans and if the fans want it removing then so be it! SUSPEND VAR”

We need a petition for shorter sentences.

Still waiting on that last one.

Can't call McBurnie because a goal was given and remained given. Want a nice juicy last minute goal disallowed against us or a cheeky handballed goal from Mousset being declared not clear and obvious.

About 4 of them should redress the balance of in my opinion:
Leicester - where for the winner, riding all over Egan by Soyuncu was deemed not a foul.
Southampton where we saw the best of both, without VAR, we keep McBurnie's goal. With it, we lose that but get the pen on Ward-Prowse's handball. Not some hybrid nothing that we did get.
Spurs - aside from the toenail bull, the fact the tech isn't precise enough to freeze a frame at the point of absolute impact of the pass, the fact that a cross being cleared and a new cross from the opposite side of the field somehow constituted the same phase of play.
Newcastle - where not offside but a horrendous flag when it should have stayed down impacted all the Blades on the pitch.

So in all, I think we've been on the wrong side of VAR 4 times at a cost of about 4 points, even though that shithead Riley will come up with some convoluted way to suggest they were correct in a know the rules doesn't understand the game or how to apply them, sort of way.

I used to like the arguments in the pub post-game about how the ref fucked up. None of that now.

The only way the McBurnie one would qualify is if the ref had given it as handball initially and VAR overturned the on field decision.
It’s still the Spurs decision and Newcastle ones that piss me off most - the Spurs because the tech isn’t accurate enough and I’m not buying the “same phase of play” bollox they trotted out. The Newcastle because we’ve been shafted by a Lino who apparently doesn’t understand the directives and has flagged like a dick and caused confusion on the pitch. Add to this a ref who was picking and choosing when to apply said directives

I'm not sure how you can do this. Surely we have to continue with this mess until the inconsistencies are ironed out on a week by week , match by match basis. By suspending VAR it's inconsistencies will never be ironed out. Unfortunately we are going to have to continue with VAR until they get it right.

It worked very well in the Manchester Derby last night. I’m sure if we get a penalty given by VAR the opinion will be very different after that match.

Very noble gesture but they would only consider listening when the likes of Liverpool et all, decide they don't like it.

Even if 50,000 sign, nothing will change this season. They can't just scrap it mid season. Teams will start asking for games to be replayed and everything.

We're stuck with it.

It did.

Except now I think, did the ref think it was a penalty but not give it in order to let Alan Tracy up in Thunderbird 5 sort it out?

I know longer know what the actual process is any more.

Video ASSISTANT Referee? but its not assisting its bossing, It would work better, for me,if the on field official asked for a decision if he/she is unsure of an incident/infringement,whereas the system is telling the on field ref everything its making them almost redundant. its not play to the whistle (which United should have done) its play til VAR has spoken.

VAR got the eventual decision right, so in terms of that it wasn't wrong but the incident and the way VAR influenced it is very much wrong. Fundamentally it is wrong, as a concept it is wrong and it's whole effect on the sport is wrong.

The great universal sport of football, played by all anywhere at any level to the same rules is no more. Anyone officiating with a flag for example operate to different rules if VAR is involved. The guy with flag against Newcastle will be expected to officiate to different rules if his next game is in the Championship. It shouldn't be two different sports, but as I'm constantly stating, VAR is not about what is happening in the ground, but what keeps the interest and controversy high for the TV coverage. Invented by TV for TV.

100% correct 👍

The moment the ball hits the back of the net is the most important in football,I don’t want to wait around for 3 minutes whilst some dick draws lines because then the moment is ruined, gone forever for the fans and the team.
I want an instantaneous decision from the ref,I want to see the linesmen with his flag up or down, then I want to celebrate a goal or keep a lid on it cos it’s offside.
Yeah we know VAR was not wrong last night we’re not daft.
You’re missing the point.
I don’t care how fast they make the technology or the processes, one minute,30 seconds or 10 seconds because the moment it’s referred to VAR is the killer one.

Penalties are are different matter all together because you are not ruining what should be a euphoric moment when your team scores by waiting for 3 minutes so you can feel fookin relieved that a goal has been given,it’s pathetic.

Too many factors are involved in offside for VAR to be used constantly - defenders running one way, forwards another way, moment of ball being played in a different part of the pitch, and linesman also moving. I think we have to have 30-second reviews by the ref pitch side, if it's not obviously wrong in his view, then original decision stands. Teams allowed one appeal per game, which they retain if appeal is upheld. Goal-line technology to remain. Retrospective reviews to give suspensions to players who have got away with diving. And if VAR stays the same, don't buy players with long noses - it could cost a goal!

I love the analogy but it was John for the most part up in T5
Everyone forgets poor old John
I’ll never forget when I noticed the guys had strings on them
Thunderbirds was never the same....
Bit like football after VAR.....
Boo......

Way more concerning things happening in the world then bloody VAR.

Like you I'm not 100% sure of the answer, though I have my thoughts what could be done but am putting them on one side for now. I'm going along with your opinion that we must continue otherwise improvement will never come. Taking that in mind and knowing that at seasons end teams will be relegated using VAR should we suspend promotion and relegation till such time VAR is fit for purpose. Clubs who achieve promotion places, whilst calibration continues, receive financial benefits from footballing authorities, FIFA mainly as I believe they are the instigators but also EUFA and last but not least The FA., Teams in relegation positions receive less monies than their normal stipend,
