V. Nervy Crowd On Saturday

I would say that had it not been for G/H block on saturday, there would have been almost silence in the first half. It was almost as if the Kop had been soundproofed in the first half but it picked up in the 2nd......and I was in C block in the south stand. It also sounded as if H block was triggering some noise from the upper corner where I normally sit and where it is normally quiet - typical for it to liven up when I'm not there ,

Thought exactly the same. In C block as always Some near the front were still awake at half time as well.

I thought the noise generated on the kop was pretty good to be honest.
Sometimes I was the only one singing in my immediate vacinity, but I was past caring to be honest - [It's not like the rest didn't know the words, I mean "Sheff United! Sheff United! Sheff United!" it aint tricky lyrics], BUT it was enough to encourage others to join in, which they did! :)

Yeah but some sing it too fast.

You don't think the team deserves better vocal support?

The club as a whole does. Doesn't stop you slating it at every opportunity.

Yes. But not a pre orchestrated set up like Palace. The GCB has been ruined by playing the first few notes on the tannoy imo. No spontaneity. Just generic songs one after the other. That's why the old ones last. A bit different, original, humourous. Pretty much the Sheffield United way. I'll read somewhere on this thread no doubt that all seater stadia killed atmosphere. Well anyone who says that clearly didn't sit on the Kop in the early days.
It's different groups these days, wanting their own way and moaning on the internet but doing little else.

Ricky is actually putting his head above the parapet and doing something. More should support him if that's what you want.

How about a band? Would you like that?

Football fans in general seem to be a bunch of miserable bastards.

If you just look through some fan youTube channels or internet forums, for a handful of teams in each league they'll be happy. For the rest, it'll be 'not good enough', 'we're going nowhere', 'the manager's taken us as far as he can', etc etc.

The only fans who are really content are those whose team is far outweighing their expectations.

We were ecstatic earlier in the season when we were competing in the auto places, and rightly so, but have been making some noises of discontent recently as we've sat around the edge of the playoffs. If we were to drop into midtable then I suspect there would be a 50/50 mix of positivity/negativity which would slide towards the latter if we were to go into lower midtable.

Whilst all that makes sense to some degree, we are still a newly promoted side, and most of us said in pre-season we would be happy with midtable. This means that right now, being where we are we should actually all be very satisfied, but from reading on here it still seems like this is not the case.

Just look at our neighbours. Carlos' first season they finish 6th and the fans are ecstatic because they had previously been finishing 16/17th. The season after they started becoming quite negative again, despite finishing higher, as their expectations had been raised to such a high level.

Understandable it's getting towards the critical point of the season and squeeky bum time

Im not bothered what anyone else does in the ground,i sing and shout as much as i can, whether it offends or pleases any of the newbyites that sit near me,faces change every home game, two chumps male and female both 40/50 ish for the Villa game were sat in my seats, made them shift up to where they should be,bitch moaned about her just getting the seat warm,i said ive been warming it every home game for the last 12 years, anyway i sung and i shouted, halftime came,i go for a wazzNchat come back and they had dissappeared thank fuck, the tongue tied dumbass'

It's a fair point crowd is a tad nervous but what we've been through in the past 7 years it's understandable we need time to readjust to success and being competitive once again.
Least we are all nervous together, better than a divided fan base we had under Weir, Adams, Clough and Adkin.

I haven't as yet moved to the BL upper when Ricky has organised something, that's why I don't complain about the atmosphere.

If our fans are "nervous" now then they'll never not be nervous.

Just to be clear - I didn't set up this thread as a crack at our fans. I do just think the atmosphere at the start of the season was much better than saturday. I actually thought the villa and wednesday atmospheres were pretty good. Just leeds we didn't get into full swing and i was trying to piece why.

I think we all know we aren't Galatasary for example but we know how good we can be, especially in a leeds match

It's very complicated actually. If it's just top left kop, Sheff United comes out OK. However, when top right joins in, it becomes Sheff Sheff United United. Then the SS G&H joins in and it becomes Sheff Sheff United Sheff United United. So Ricky if you are reading this, please don't get the BLUT started as I don't think my head would be able to cope!!

I don't doubt what you are saying but sat on the Kop I can honestly say I never heard (or at least noticed) anything from the South Stand. Sorry UTB

Accoustics are shit at the Lane, it's not compact enough due to the wide perimeter around the pitch. it's similar to those grounds with a running track. I noticed the same as you last season when I was on the kop. This season I'm on the SS and can hardly hear the kop. Filling in the kop corner would help, whether it's an office block or seats.

Let's be honest, we've been kicked in the bollocks so many times over the years that nervous pessimism is an entirely natural default state for our fans to be in. And we have also had a run of home games where we've been kicked in the bollocks late on eg Villa, Brizzle. The fans being a bit quiet and edgy is a predictable reaction to this.

Maybe you were in too much agony at having your knees squashed in by the seat in front to notice?

The biggest positive by far from a support point of view was H in the South Stand stood up and making some noise. They're pretty much all ST holders round there so hopefully they can keep it up.

The best place for acoustics is the BLUT/South Stand corner. Steep, boxed in, quite close to the pitch. We need to make more of that area.

The Kop has terrible acoustics, and that's made worse by the fact that our vocal fans are generally nowhere near the front.

I sit on the Kop on the John street side and I heard them loud and proud. Those at the back of the Kop tried their level best to get things going but to no avail, at one point when I joined in I got looked at like a numpty so I responded with what’s up you boring bastards. :)

I don’t get why people sit on the Kop and don’t want to sing, I thought that’s what it was made for? I only sit on there because my lad likes to sit where the atmosphere is supposed to be, even he thinks it’s shit and I’ve told him we’re moving to the anechoic chamber at Orfield laboratories in Minneapolis next season, atleast he’ll be able to have a piss in peace. :)

Totally agree. I sometimes think too many of our fans expect too much from our support and can't wait to criticise.

Any excuse to use an experience of good home support at one of our away games to call our fans out.

That said I did think we were a bit subdued on Saturday all things considered.

I watched back parts of the game last night that I Sky Plussed from Saturday and even Don Goodman said on commentary he was a bit surprised how quiet we were.

More grey hair than a Saga Coach Tour on Kop Gangway B! Need that safe standing to get the young uns into it a bit more.

Attention seeker just been on the radio, covertly slagging the club off from top to bottom, quickly followed by the next caller ( a pig ) swiftly saying yeah the support is crap at the lane....thanks for that, reyt blade...

You can’t blame the fans, because since Bolton we’ve not made teams pay for our dominance, the loss to Bolton with the games on the horizon was terrible, but now we are in a part of the season where two losses in a row and the results don’t go for us then it’s over as far as the league goes so I don’t know why people are surprised it’s a bit quiet.. yes I know what we would have settled for “etc” but expectations changed and some can see a shock play off place slipping away..

Ps, if you’re moaning about noise and you’re not on the kop, stop it, I’m in block G stood up all game and it’s always noisy, too many people think others are supposed to provide thier atmosphere on a Saturday afternoon...

Can’t hear any other stand... until we score...

Reyt Blade he was from Wakefield

I would love to know how many of the "lack of noise moaners" actually open their cakeholes and join in with a song when one is being sung, being coy because no one else is singing near you dont count for an excuse.

I had to move to the Pukka Pies stand as had a couple of mates want to come at the last minute, so I'm not best placed to comment as it was mostly empty, but I have to disagree.

I thought the early goal settled us and the noise from the fans was constant. Even when they equalised we stayed noisy and didn't think we were nervy at all.

Why do people insist on criticising our fans? We are so self flagellating at times...

Self-flagellating? Weren't you told that can make you blind?;)

From someone on the south stand i've always found it takes the big games to bring out the singing voice on SS or even a turnaround in a games fortunes. One big problem over the last two years in particular has been the amount of swearing in all the chants - as much as i love Jack o connells magic , a lot of families round me understandably can't join in with 'head the f*cker back' etc whereas greasy chip butty always gets a good rendition

It doesn't matter mate - we're not entering BBC Choir of the Year competition. The idea is to make some noise. :)

Same syndrome as most clubs are facing the higher you go. All clubs have a hardcore loyal fanbase ) I've travelled the UK and Europe with sufc since the early 70s ..I've seen us have 800 at Plymouth on a Tuesday night I've seen us have 250 at Plymouth on a bank holiday Monday night mid 80s, I've seen us at den Haag with 200 in pre season night game
.football is dying,, every club is now attached by hangers on.. Blackburn had 25k thru money .they struggle with 12k now ..same many teams..Sunderland no longer have passionate support ..money has ruined football sky has created a new breed of fan.
