So we've fought back from 3 nil down to get a 3-3 draw.
First off fair play to the blades that has gone over. For the rest of us reliant on either radio or text updates I am sure we were all ( ok most) ready to throw the towel in .
Great fightback but what the hell does this mean and where does it leave us ? I don't mean where in the table I am asking what it says and where you sit with that result in context .
It's got to go down as a good point in the end surely but conceding 3 starts to ask questions again .
Scoring 3 is great of course and hopefully now secures the done /sharp partnership as the way to go . I don't mean to be rude to him but I just don't think sammon is good enough.
Would love to hear your views on what all this tells us

Sounded like the referee gifted them the first goal. Disappointing but not surprised we had a slow start given Saturday's exertions. Which is why a late comeback is all the more pleasing. Good sign for the team spirit as well. Last half a dozen games have been much, much better in terms of levels of performance.

Goals are there in the team but it's getting the balance right. I think Adkins still has work to do and last season we wouldn't have come back like that.

We were slightly unlucky in the first half to.

View is we're where we were on the first day of the season and have made no progress.

Three goals or we generally get nowt.

I had to rely on the radio tonight for once, and it sounded like Sharp was acting as creative midfielder at times, as well as striker, would need someone who attended to let us know what was really going on. Matt Done and Billy Sharp sounded in form (of course).

I think it's often tactics. We set off vulnerable. Concede. Reorganise and look like a very good team. It's happened five or six times I reckon.

Individuals often get grief but the problems are with the team. Not a criticism of Adkins btw.

Like we didn't away at Swindon? Love the way people state these things with no real fact to back it up.

Great spirit, great point but we need to sort our defence out. Do that and we can still get out of this shithole..

Still in what though? If in the race for the playoffs yes. Automatic promotion is long gone.
Automatics ? No side has got automatic promotion with 36 points from 23 games at the half way stage. [ we now have 37 from 25 ].

I'm talking about finishing 6th but being in form come play off time for a change.

There's goal's in this side and there has been all season, it's the other end of the park that's the problem. A big dominant centre half would be a massive help in that direction and a decent target man would also help the team defensively (if it's not coming straight back, then it helps take the pressure off the rest of the team).

I'd also point out Adkins hasn't played 2 banks of 4 tonight and we've shipped 3. If he gets a decent centre half and target man then we don't have to get constrained with 2 banks of 4 to try and shut up shop.

I recognise those statistics and hence why it seems highly unlikely (at best) unless we win almost every game and lose none.

It is certainly possible to finish 6th. I don't think we will but it is possible. Given our history in the playoffs and form over the season I'm not holding my breath in the hope that we do.

That ref was a joke tonight and so was the linesman down the left hand (the away end facing forward left) side.

Poor defending cost us two of the goals and their first was gifted by a combination of the referee and what looked to be a very obvious offside.

They should have been down to 10 men with Baxter through on goal before been wiped out by their player who only received a yellow card (was a red card all day long, and even that could be seen from the away end at the other end of the pitch!)

We looked like typical United, and only when we gave them a 3-0 head start did we think fuck it lets have a proper go.

Fair play to Sharp, he played like a fan would in that situation and was the key player in our comeback I'm my opinion.

We have got to sort out the schoolboy defending (which we have seen all season), get in some (at the very least 1) proper wingers and send Hammond back to rot in the Leicester reserves rather than stealing a living from us.
It goes without saying we need a CB, someone whose a hard, nasty player to put a bit of spine into it.

We really need a run of form starting with 3 points at Colchester.

We have Wigan at BDTBL on 6 Feb - that's a real 6 pointer. We need payback for 13 May 2007 as well.

Defensively: only one side in In the top half of the league have conceded more than us (Peterboro, who've conceded the one more, but who're scoring for fun).

There again, offensively, we're the 3rd top scorers in the league, Billy's on fire & Matty Done's hitting his stride.

The problems we have got are the defensive ones we've been bedevilled with since Gillingham on day one (although they have been partly mitigated). But we have got a real fighting spirit back again now & creating & scoring goals isn't a concern (albeit they're not shared round as much as you'd like).

We're not far off. And we're improving & we're developing a bit of momentum. One loss since Barnsley.

Now get that cheque book out Kev/Abz. The jigsaw needs completing...

We need a proper run though. 6 or 7 wins on the bounce without a complete collapse straight after. So far they haven't managed a run like that.

I daren't even say anything any more. I just get jumped on by a set of narrow minded cry babies.

Credit should be given for the comeback, but don't even dare to suggest we shouldn't be going three down in the first place.

I'll untangle it.
Extremely poor football team, low on confidence, not willing to work very hard unless it's in a glamour cup tie finds itself 3-0 down due to a total lack of effort and common decency and decides it might as well have a go rather than face the shitstorm it's going to face at full time.

Firstly, we had a lot of bad luck in the first half, and that's a lot even for us, but you can't blame luck for everything, you make your own luck sometimes and "hoof ball" as we played in the first half did not help at all. 15 minutes gone and the referee intercepts a perfectly timed ball out from the back, but its not his fault, he only had 5 seconds to react. Reason 1 for the worst referee of the year award to Mr. Woolmer (I know its early, but he's definitely in for a shout). They score straight from the ref's involvement, 1-0. Typical. Down the other end 15 minutes later and Mr. Woolmer has a chance to even things up, Baxter is completely side swiped and would be through 1-on-1 if not for the challenge. Yellow, somehow. Reason 2. But again, you can't really blame the referee, he was quite some 10 feet away from the incident, and only had the help of one linesman to make his decision, oh well, we go on. Stroke of half time, Wigan break and find a free man at the front post. 2-0, as she wrote. The blades team go in at half time to a chorus of boo's, much deserved. We come out in the second half looking like we want to play football for the first time in I don't know how long, great. Adkins has said the right things and it looks to be taking effect. Now this is where the fans come into their own, oh how I love the fans. Not long into the second half and they break, I don't see the whole play as I'm the other end of the pitch, it looks like one of theirs has a little run, nobody puts a foot in, he beats what looks like 5 players and someone gets a shot away on target, 3-0. (Not young George's best performance) unlucky after a good spell of attacking football with the ball on the deck, but that's just bad defending for you. After this the fans get worse, but in all honesty the team deserve everything they get. However, its probably a good job we got one back when we did, 3-1, took the momentum with us and the chorus of "were shit" quietened down, for now. We carried on playing good (not great i might add, but well above average) on the ground, pass and move football. 10 minutes go by and i hear the cry for JCR.... I begged Adkins to see sense and leave things as they were, which he did as only one team looked in control and why change so early on in that situation? good management, trust your players. The cry for change kept coming, with every good attack it got louder. Until finally Billy silenced the shouts with a well worked goal finished off by a skeptical header, keeper flapped and could have done better, but it was in, 3-2 and game on. Good management again here, some managers would have brought on a big dopey forward and gone back to hoof ball in an attempt for a 3rd, but we kept shape and the right changes were made (still stand by the fact that JCR is a football con artist). Unfortunately at this point something snapped and the lads at the back got twitchy, hoof, hoof, hooooffff. I almost gave up hope until we had a good spell in their half, billy picked the ball up, beat his man and rocketed a shot towards the keeper, the save falls to the back post where Done picks up the pieces and slots it home (from an acute angle to say the least). 3-3, we could have gone on to win this one, and almost did with a few very decent efforts in the last few minutes. But it just goes to show, we DO actually have a team that can play football, its no Barcelona style passing but it works fine in the tin pot of L1. Wigan were broken in the second half, broken by a team who passed them off the park, which goes to show it might not be all doom and gloom after all. Tidy up the back 4 with a solid CB, trim the team of any stragglers and we could just have a good run and make up some ground on the teams above before too long.
Every player deserved subbing at half time but we did what was needed and it was a game of almost 2 halves, Billy was fantastic trying to get involved with everything, Done was Done and ran his socks off (finally a front 2 that works!?), Even McEveley deserves some praise, my god he's a liability at the back, but he can run with the ball, play good passes and can be credited as the main factor in the 2nd goal. the rest of the lads gained confidence throughout and its a shame that it took going 3 down to act and start playing football.

That would be lovely but Adkins has turned it round since Barnsley. We're currently on one of our best runs of the season 11 points from 6 games.

We need to maintain that form as a minimum, that would get us 75 points. We should scrape into the top 6 with that.

But agree a great run now will put us in better shape.

Agree with a lot of that. Especially it working at 2-0 and not changing it at 3-0.

Done's second must've gone through the side netting, so maybe we got our luck there.

Why not? I just did. Problem is Barney you have form. You don't say much positive and when you do it appears you damn them with feint praise.

Not telling you what to do but sometimes it isn't what you say just the way that you say it.

Thanks Clarky, you're going to be disappointed about Hammond, having listened to NA post match interview. Not MOM then ?

It's been a surprise to me that the Done / Sharp partnership has not had as much success as I would have expected thus far.

Hopefully this game signals a turnaround.

If so, this leaves Sammon as perhaps 4th or 5th choice striker (behind Adams) and, if at all possible, we really should be looking to get his substantial wages (circa £11k p.w) off the payroll this window.
