Was asked by a coventry fan once and asked what the difference was.
I am a blade I said, because years ago I would ring in from abroad and ask my dad
about the days results first one I asked about was have Wendy lost? I would then
ask how United have gone on, so to summerise it was more important that they
had lost than if we had won, any way I was just joking but what is the difference
in your opinion

My Uncle long since passed away (a piggy too) always referred to United-ites and Wednesday-ites. Not aware of other clubs using it though - anyone else know?

It's an old thing passed down from donkeys years ago - still used, but rarely with the yoofs

Talking to a football fan in Sheffield area (for many years probably as far back as 1890s) you claim to be an United-ite and he/she will know which club you are talking about
Talking to a football fan outside the Sheffield area you claim to be a Blade and he/she will know which club you are talking about. If you said United-Ite then he/she probably will think Man U

When did being a "blade" first start, seems to me to have been about ten years?

Got to be 30 a least
The song nananana he's a blade and he's a blade (repeat) is as old as that
True, you use the world Blade more often in the recent years because you get to know more football fans from outside the Sheffield area especially in the internet. I was at boarding school between 1973 and 1979 and I would say "I am a Blade" rather than" I am an United-ite" when talking to the school pupils (there were a lot of L**ds/Liverpool/Man U fans at my boarding school)

Can remember singing 'nah nah nah nah etc' and 'he's a Blade, Sheffield Wednesday's nothing to be scared of' in the early eighties. Surely we called ourselves 'Blades' in those days?
When I started to follow football in 1970 my dad would point me out to his friends saying "He is an United-ite" or "He is a W*****day-ite" etc

'Blades' was actually a journalistic term to describe both Sheffield clubs originally. This only stopped when Wendy moved to their present location and became the Owls. Uniteds original nicknames were The 'Cutlers' or the 'Candystripes'.

The other explanation I've heard is that for a while 'Blade ' meant a player whereas 'Unitedite ' referred to a fan.

Saw Rotten at Shred's wake at the Social club (or conference room whatever it is called). He was hugging Mick Parry and Benny was telling me who he is. Rotten now lives in Holland?
