ANORAK ALERT
I’ve spotted a couple of points that may need correcting, sorry.

1. This team is a hybrid early eighties team. It has the round concentric base, but the earlier 70s teams had the player on a straight edge that slotted into a mini trench. The later mid to late eighties teams had the straight armed less human type of player on the concentric base. So a traditional player on a concentric base like this here was the hybrid version.

2. The corner kickers heads were not pressed. You flicked the head backwards with the body pivoted, thus bringing the leg forward to strike the ball. Absolutely useless in play and bringing on a giant to take your corners looked stupid. From memory I only think they were in blue or red and not striped kits too. However not as bad as the spring loaded throw in players which again just sent the ball anywhere. Pressing heads down was Striker but that was all marketing and rubbish in play.

3. 2 other useless Subutteo games were rugby and cricket. Both never played with after Boxing Day.

The best accessory for playing was the interchangeable goalie as he was longer and had a wider arm reach. Of course the early desso inspired Astro turf was good if you didn’t roll it up.

The best for atmosphere was the streaker, or am I fantasising again.....
No, sorry, really loved the Subutteo cricket. We may have altered the rules, but I thought it was great.

Anyone else have the scoreboard and just kept doing FA Cup draws where Sheff Utd won every single time?

Was I the only one to have the battery powered floodlights ?

Nope. Got 4 sat in the garage right now. Battery was mental and they gave about as much light as a tea light from a mile away.

Had the ref and linesmen and TV crew, a Jules Rimet trophy plus a few teams (including of course TRAWWs). Result of many happy trips to
Redgates and Roger Gould’s on Ecclesall Riad.
I'm an old Banner Cross boy, when I drive up Eccy Road now I still feel a slight pang of sadness that Roger Gould's closed.

Update!

Couldn't find the astropitch just yet, so the first outing for the newly invigorated Blades team was on traditional cloth pitch smoothed on carpet.

Young SherburnBlade Jr lead out the team against ....... Blades '93 stylee!

It was a close game where SUFC 93 (me) were leading 1-0 when a phone call came from Mrs SB saying she'd received a text from school telling her that junior had got a bollocking at school for dicking about in science which had lead to a dinnertime detention tomorrow. He had failed to mention this to me on his return from school and as a result, Mrs SB was all for stopping him from playing football all week in additton to a standard Xbox ban.

He was due to go to training at York City tonight followed by a local school derby versus Tadcaster Grammar tomorrow, so the pitch and teams were cleared up in double quick time so I could make sure we were on our way to York before mum got home from work to stop him going.

We haven't yet decided if that is a 1-0 victory to me or a default 3-0. Either way, I won!

All players came through unscathed (just!) and the now bionic no. 3 felt no ill effects from his new arm.

A thank you letter from Jr. has been written to e17blade and will be posted off tomorrow. Unbelievable Jeff!!!

More to follow I'm sure

Just got to find that fucking astropitch now!...

Chairman says you can have your astropitch as soon as the new foreign investment is on board...meanwhile he's going to sell your young promising centre half to fund a nice piece of cheap chipboard. Hey..... it's the 'Buteo waaaaay!

Am I right in thinking that Subbuteo teams were sold as though they could be more than one team? IE, I'm sure I bought Sheff Utd but I seem to remember it having on the box that it was also Stoke & Sunderland.
From memory, we were team number nine of about fifty. My chart had us down as Sheffield United, Southampton and Brentford I think, take your pick depending on where you lived. In my days Stoke and Sunderland wore white shorts so were in a different box.
We used to go into Suggs to buy our teams when we’d saved up our ten bob, we always inspected them before buying as some were painted neater than others.
The early buys had goalies on a wire handles before the plastic ones came in and it was pot luck what colour the goal keepers shirt was painted.
Happy days indeed, mine are somewhere in the loft as I couldn’t bear to part with them.

Thank you for your concern CB but it's just an image I filched from Google. I never owned a Test Match of my own (I had a shitty pocket cricket game which was basically two metal dice in a plastic tube...we relied a lot on our imagination in those days) but played a lot on various mates games. It wasn't a patch on Subbuteo.
The 'stains' are pine knots showing through the thin pitch material by the way.
Owzat

I remember as a kid thinking the netting on the goal wasn't quite to scale so I got mums sewing box out and cut up one of her net curtains to make the goals look more authentic. Looked great they did but it wasn't worth not being able to sit down for a week. ;)

And I thought I was the only one...

Many, many years ago (when I were a lad), Subutteo players were 'flat' - stamped and coloured plastic (they were originally cardboard). Then came the 3D players - 'Subutteo Continental' around the late 60s. A full team was around ten bob. I always thought the ball was stupidly large, so I used to nick one from my brother who had a game called (I think) Super Soccer where the pitch was on a board with legs in the corner so there was about a 4" gap under the pitch. The player's bases were metal and you had plastic 'handles' with magnets on the end to move the players around.

Ahhh memries!! This got me rooting through my old stuff and I have kept quite a bit of Subbuteo paraphernalia I had from the late 80s early 90s....I had the scoreboard, referee and linesman but I sold them off when I was broke along with around 10 teams to a mate who was collecting it, but ive kept a fair bit of stuff, wish i'd kept that scoreboard though, was brilliant, I had to make a tab of paper to fit with Worcester Citys name on of course! :)

Anyway...

Look what I found....

Tango's balls.... if someone sends them to him it'll be the first time in 40 years he'll have seen them! :D

And yes, I have the giant like in comparison throw in and kick takers... not sure what happened to the blue throw in one, a reckless challenge from the sidelines probably gave him two busted legs and arms!

A few of the teams ive got..

Mate would always play as Brazil (if he wasnt his beloved Coventry or the moustached German team he had!) and he'd turn all samba samba style trying to play fast and knocking it around like Socrates and Rivelinho, hardly ever waiting for the ball to stop....if I used them I was Torquay United haha!! :)

You need a "Get out of jail Free" card.
Tell the memsahib that even though SB jnr had a two match ban you had not. Leaving him at home alone would have been bordering on the illegal, certainly irresponsible.
Make him sit on 't naughty step for a time. Don't forget he's there like what I did with my youngest. He pulled the wallpaper off.
Hope this helps.
