United/Chesterfield contrasting fortunes

Sad really. the knock on effect of losing their parachute payment from the EFL will have a knock on effect on many employees of the club. The academy will close down through lack of funds leaving all the young lads searching round for another team to play for next season.
Hope they manage to stay up and challenge to get back in the football league once more.

Very sad to read about Chesterfield's predicament. It's such a nice stadium. I really hope they turn it around. For those people saying they hate us, I believe their main rivalry is Mansfield and they're not that bothered about us.

Their rivalry is with Mansfield but they do have a huge chip on their shoulder about the Blades. For some reason not so much with the pigs.

Some of the bitter comments I get are laughable, I would be more sympathetic to their cause if they weren't as bitter about us.

Once we've stayed up for a couple of seasons, I think we should buy their stadium off them and use it for non first team games, SUFC ladies, training ground for the first team etc. Rip out the blue seats and pop the red n white SUFC seats in.

If course, we should let little Chessie use the stadium for a wee while provided they are nice. 😉

Saw that on Twitter the other day.

They’re currently 1-0 down to Halifax Town. Relegation to the sixth tier looking very likely. Hard to see how they’d ever recover from that.

There's a good read in the Guardian summing up Chez's plight and shenanigans:

It is a good read and shows the fine line there now is between moderate success and total failure, especially in L1 and L2. It may be that some Chesterfield fans don't like us, but I bear them no ill will. They're considerably better off than Bury fans though.

Always had a soft spot for Chessy to be honest , I’m surprised that they really are struggling Sheridan came in last season and steadied the ship but they are in the shit again .. I hope they stay up this season & get back in the football league . But there’s a lot of former league clubs down there now very difficult division to get out of without cash

I don’t really understand your first paragraph as supporters don’t get to choose their owners.
I think the reason ‘they’ blame us is because we didn’t let them have Brooks, who may have kept them up, if he played like he did for us. Obviously that’s not the only reason they went down and the idea that it’s all down to them not getting Brooks is something for simpletons to repeat until they believe it.
They could protest like the supporters of the clubs you mention but it hasn’t made any difference. Roland Duchatelet is still at Charlton and SISU are still at Cov. Oyston only departed Blackpool because of a court case he lost against another director, not the protests.
Even our own protests had little real effect; Brearley was desperate to get out, Woolhouse andHinchcliffe didn’t come up with the cash and MacDonald lost interest when his mate Kendall pissed off. We had our great shoes off in the car park but we still ended up with Wilson.
Let’s not perpetuate the myth that supporters in the modern world have any real control over the ownership of their club, or pretend that we’re in some way special, just because we’ve been fortunate.

The protest to get Robson out worked. McCabe still wanted to keep him at the club.

when you think its not long since YEOVIL beat us in a play off semi and they are 5 divisions below us
we lost to a decent swindon team in another play off semi and they now in league two

Nearly 20 years as a football league club, one season in the Championship and now back in non-league.

Speaking to someone who works at Chesterfield yesterday and they are now rooting for us to become a fixture in the PL. The revenue from the rent of the ground for the women’s and u23’s is plugging gaps in their income and they are trying to work on what else they can offer us in future.

I told him that they need to get the seats painted red first off.

Shame about Chesterfield. I know they don’t like us or Sheffielder's in general but I’ve never felt any real animosity towards them.
Yes I for one don't get this animosity I've never considered them rivals in a big way, felt for them in FA cup semi when robbed v Boro. They seem to despise all that is Sheffield it saddens me when I see that they are bottom of the National League and, getting beat regularly I'd love to see them back in league but don't think it will happen.

Don't Sheffield United women have their own ground on Attercliffe Road?

I think the rivalry between Chesterfield and Sheffield is pretty much to be expected. Predominantly rural counties like Derbyshire historically identify with the county - and Yorkshire is known for it. Place a small county alongside a large one and it's only to be expected that a rivalry develops. Think of Scotland and England, Canada and the US, New Zealand and Australia.

Add to this that Sheffield has encroached on Derbyshire for decades taking Totley round to Norton in the 20s despite local opposition and trying to add the Hope Valley, Dronfield etc in the 70s.

Today the influx of "loud and proud" Yorkshiremen into Eckington, Dronfield etc is a local cause of resentment amongst long standing local families who can no longer afford local homes, whose pubs have been taken over and their characters "Yorkshire-ized" and the appearance of white roses in windows, on flags etc serves to rub salt in the wound.

It's like a micro Brexit thing but with Yorkshire people playing the part of the eastern Europeans.

I guess that although the traditional rivalry Derbyshire has is with Nottinghamshire, those who live in the northern part of the county feel the rivalry with Yorkshire more keenly.

In sport, Town's rivalry is certainly more with Mansfield - spiced up during the Miner's Strike and still pretty vicious. Derby are favoured - first visitors to the new ground etc. But the Yorkshire clubs aren't especially loved - bit IMO no more unloved than Yorkshire Cricket Club.

Went to the friendly and thought it was a cracking ground, just looks shit from the outside. Felt for their fans too, what an awful time they’ve had.

I’d like to see them get back in the League.
Saying that, Chezzy has probably got the biggest concentration of Blades outside Sheff. Growing up there in the 70s I never really knew any Wendy’s either.

Agree, I worked there for 22 years. A mixture of Blades, Chesterfield, L**ds/Liverpool/Man U fans , not many Wendy fans.

There are pigs in Chesterfield, they are extremely quiet at the moment though.

Naturally there has to be. But I never knew any growing.
I’ll always remember catching a train with friends to Manchester when Chezzy played the Smoggies in the FA cup semi final in 97. The platform at Chesterfield was packed with Spirerites as you would imagine. But taking the same journey a year later also to see us play in a semi final against the Geordies. There were just as many, if not more United fans travelling from Chesterfield that day.
I simply couldn’t imagine the pigs having a similar turnout from my home town.

Pigs are always quiet round Chesterfield, for fear of being bummed by a yocal.

That's sheep isn't it? As someone who was born in Chesterfield I've never been much into bestiality, I've also tried to widen the gene pool by marrying outside the family. I like to do my bit.

Km between Sheffield and Chesterfield = 0
km between England and Scotland = 0
Km between USA and Canada = 0
km between Australia and New Zealand = 4163 😳

I get what you are saying tho 😀👍 UTB

You're telling me the sun actually rises in Chesterfield? Never new that 😎

I'll second that, I went to a wedding in Chesterfield and popped out to check on the nightlife. Now I'm not a fussy man and I do not come from a position of strength when talking about looks but come on...
