In September 2016 there were just two positions separating us in the league. We were 56th in the football league pyramid, they were 58th.
Three years on, we are 10th in the Premier League and they are bottom of the National League (10th and 125th respectively in the combined leagues). Never have two football clubs fortunes contrasted so quickly (excluding Bury!) IMG_20190908_180741.jpg

1973Blade I was going to post similar about our promotion rivals from that season. The top 6 from the season...

Bolton - adrift at the bottom of league 1
Bradford - struggling in league 2
Scunthorpe - bottom of league 2

Fleetwood have stayed in league 1 and Millwall still in the championship though
Yes Scunthorpe were our big rivals for a time that season and now find themselves bottom. The other SUFC, Southend, are having an awful time too, zero points only Bolton's issues keeping them off the bottom. At least one SUFCil is doing alright!

Shame about Chesterfield. I know they don’t like us or Sheffielder's in general but I’ve never felt any real animosity towards them.

Went to the friendly and thought it was a cracking ground, just looks shit from the outside. Felt for their fans too, what an awful time they’ve had.

I’d like to see them get back in the League.

They dislike Mansfield more than us.

Somewhere. either on S24SU or Bladesmad will be a post from me that maintains that our fortunes are intertwined and that when they are in the 4th we will be in the Premier. Little did I expect them to drop so far. Keep going and we will be champions league!

It just shows that in todays game you can't stand still and sit back on your past glories no matter what division your in or how much you spend on a new ground. In fact there are a number of teams who have spent more on their ground than on the team and paid for it.

We need to exploit this. We should be swamping Chesterfield and area with marketing material and (when there's room) free / reduced price tickets. They effectively don't have a team, there's lots of potential to grow our fan base out there.

They had a good team that played good football under Paul Cook with Paul Mitchell behind the scenes. That year they got to the play-offs with us, they seemed like a club on the up. Then Cook left, Dave Allen sold all their decent players and appointed Dean Saunders. They’ve been rotten ever since then, but I didn’t think they’d sink this low. They seemed cursed.

I reckon that’ll happen naturally while we’re in the Premier League.

About a year or so ago I was at the Barley Mow at Wingerworth and there was a charity event on. Saw 2 or 3 United shirts then, no Chesterfield or pig shirts although I’m sure there will have been Chesterfield fans.

Before we reached the Premier obviously but our attraction will only increase the longer we’re here and the longer Chesterfield are out of the league.

Not to mention Forest and Derby still down in the Championship.

Wonder where we will both be in September 2022? Just shows how fortunes can change so quickly, hopefully in three years we will still be in the Premier league and pushing into the top half.

Another interesting thing to note is the last three names on the squad list (above the league table), with only one league start between them:

  • David Brooks
  • Che Adams
  • Dom Calvert-Lewin
Three current Premier League strikers who we chose not feature that season or got rid of. And yet it kick-started the greatest period of SUFC’s recent history. Much as I’ve never liked us being a selling club, I’ve got confidence in Wilder to decide who is in or out.

I wonder if we could get a parent club agreement of sorts? somewhere to send our u23 lads, and also have some nice sponsorship around the town

Sheridan seems to be doing his best to get sacked. They only finished paying Wilson off 2 months ago and are paying Martin Allen and Gary Caldwell still now. They’ll lose £500k a season in parachute payments after this season (assuming they don’t win every game from now on and go back up). Royally fucked I would say.

We used to play the reserve games at Saltergate back in the day.

They really are up shitcreek these days.

And Wednesday! Just three years ago, we were in the pub league and Wednesday had a team full of Galacticos, playing in La Liga in front of 50k every home game. (it's true! Wednesday said so!)

Wednesday had a world-renowned head coach in charge (Carlos Carvalhal - ignore the fact that he's won fuck all in 20 years of management, he's like Bielsa, 'Emperor's New Clothes'.) Meanwhile, a ragamuffin called Chris Wilder had just rode into town to take charge at United and not one of our players would have got into Wednesday's squad.

How could we hope to catch up..?

It might help them if they get that massive chip off their shoulders about all things Sheffield. I work out here and they blame the demise of Chesterfield firmly at the feet of us, citing the fact that we reneged on the David Brooks deal, and if they had loaned him that year they'd have stayed up and all would be well.

Looking very bleak for them now, really can't see them sacking Sheridan still due to the cost of doing so and Martin Allen still being paid off. They'll fall into Stockport County levels of obscurity if they carry on. It's about time the proact seats were changed to red as our teams play more football there than they do.

Sheridan keeps slagging the players off and is surprised when they don't respond.

I bet Ian Evatt is pissing himself having refused the job a couple of years ago and going to Barrow instead (now top of the conference with the lowest wage budget).

A club who’s fans rival Barnsley in their dislike for us so I’ve little if no sympathy for them.

Sorry but footballs a harsh business, be better on and off the pitch. Simple

We'll see how many of them carry on that hatred when Chesterfield don't exist anymore and there's a team up the road playing in the PL. We'll be picking up a good few fans out of it I reckon, particularly the younger generation who can just ignore their brainwashed dads.

Got to feel for Chesterfield. When the club have done well in the past it's lifted the town. Yes generally they don't like Sheffield but that's no surprise. They've always felt hard done to politically & economically by Sheffield & Derby. Although quite a few that live there support the Sheffield clubs.

When Dave Allen pulled out it went quickly down hill. They don't have any strong leaders to take them forward. Sheridan is struggling and by the sound of his interviews has no idea what to do. He always comes across as a bad tempered moody type. I can't see how he could inspire the young lads with his shitty attitude and moany interviews. I'll be amazed if he turns it around given the shit they're in on & off the field. I'd like to see them get back to league two & one and having local derbies with Wendy

Any team that puts its future in the hands of 3 Pigs deserves little sympathy. They knew what Allen was like yet welcomed him with open arms. Carson would be better employed on the hustings with his constant twisting of facts, see Ched Evans transfer, and Sheridan is an ex pig wannabe living on the back of winning a piss poor trophy nearly 30 years ago.

They can't abide all Yorkies but for some reason its us and not the Pigs they blame for their demise when we were doing them a favour by letting them have Reed on loan who ended up their player of the season.

They constantly moan yet can't even get themselves organised to protest against the owners ala SISU, Charlton and Blackpool. I'm afraid they are looking like being confined to the dustbin soon. Moral of the story never trust a Pig.

Shame for them, I used to enjoy the odd jaunt to Saltergate when I lived in the area. Just goes to show the sort of tightrope that clubs lower down the leagues are walking when one decision good or bad can either send you into the big time or into the doldrums, luckily we went the right way for once!

In fairness to Dave Allen, and it’s not often you can say those words in the same sentence, he seems to (looking from the outside at least) backed the managers he’s brought in. The previous manager bought a load and he’s backed Sheridan by moving more out and bringing more in. Even when they were slipping out of the league, very few fans seemed to be on the back of the chairman - appears they’ve been awfully mismanaged.

I don’t really understand your first paragraph as supporters don’t get to choose their owners.
I think the reason ‘they’ blame us is because we didn’t let them have Brooks, who may have kept them up, if he played like he did for us. Obviously that’s not the only reason they went down and the idea that it’s all down to them not getting Brooks is something for simpletons to repeat until they believe it.
They could protest like the supporters of the clubs you mention but it hasn’t made any difference. Roland Duchatelet is still at Charlton and SISU are still at Cov. Oyston only departed Blackpool because of a court case he lost against another director, not the protests.
Even our own protests had little real effect; Brearley was desperate to get out, Woolhouse andHinchcliffe didn’t come up with the cash and MacDonald lost interest when his mate Kendall pissed off. We had our great shoes off in the car park but we still ended up with Wilson.
Let’s not perpetuate the myth that supporters in the modern world have any real control over the ownership of their club, or pretend that we’re in some way special, just because we’ve been fortunate.

Very sad to read about Chesterfield's predicament. It's such a nice stadium. I really hope they turn it around. For those people saying they hate us, I believe their main rivalry is Mansfield and they're not that bothered about us.
