No, I remember the lyrics appearing in Flashing Blade around the time I first started going, so 1988/1989ish. I don't think it was as big a part of the match ritual then, though. It was just another song like that one about Jack Charlton's iron lung.
Started around 1985 and was a massive anthem for us. It was sang spontaneously and belted out with passion throughout the game. The "Let us sing hymn number 192" approach of singing it at the start of both halves is a more recent phenomenon.

Tut tut, Walthy. :)

That song (to the tune of Keith West's 'Excerpt from a Teenage Opera') was about Wednesday manager Alan Brown (1964-1968).

'Alan Brown, Alan Brown,
Is it true what Ritchie* says,
Your iron lung
has broken down?'

* John Ritchie - Wendy's leading scorer at the time. Iron lung is the equivalent of taking the piss out of somebody in a wheelchair nowadays.

Different times - remember WW2 finished barely 20 years previously, Wednesday had just been gifted a stadium refurb. for the '66 WC and Bramall Lane was a 3-sided dump.

Don't forget "This old man"

This old man, number 9
Iron Lung his favourite sign.

Wow, the words in that song back from the early-mid 60s would very largely be frowned upon these days ;)
Different times indeed

The 'Jack Charlton' song was, of course (sung to 'Home, home on the Range') and is a bit vague on the chronology:

'No pig fans in town,
no Hillsborough to sadden my eyes,
Jack Charlton is dead.
and the pig fans have fled,
and the year is 1889.'

I watched Watford vs Brighton t’other week and was amused to hear one lot of them singing

Hark now hear,
The Brighton sing,
The Palace ran away...

The lamest tear up in football History immortalised in song.

Whose a Blade out of the Sheffield lads who feature in the team?

Yeh that's was the immediate thing that impressed me with Bassett.

He was passionate like a fan and not frightened of ripping into the players publicly. He made it clear, it was his way or the highway.

Some of his post match interviews were classics. Saying "if I was a fan I'd demand a refund" and "I wish to apologise to the fans because that was dreadful. Can take below par performances but I'll never accept a lack of effort".

Bassett came across as passionate as the most ardent Blade, no bull$hit or spin and that gained him tremendous respect amongst the fans. He became one of us.
"we done too much fanny dangle" was my all time favourite.

"couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo" was one of his as well

I have not read the whole thread .Last season I was in the railway post match and bearing in mind its 30 years + I thought I recognised the lad christening his new born into the blades family. So I went up said hello and asked if it was indeed him ...It was and he was absolutely buzzing that I'd recognised him and he proceeded to shout all his mates over and let them all know that he he was still famous...Think his name was Martin..Nice lad as well
....Well that's my story
Cheers
