The Blades got back to winning ways in resounding fashion as they hammered lowly Swindon 4-0 at the Lane. After a slow start where the visitors began well and forced keeper Simon Moore into a reaction save, United grew into the game and controlled most of the first half. Poor finishing once again let them down but after the break they blew Swindon away with goals from Mark Duffy (x2), Paul Coutts and Caloan Lavery. United played some delightful football and could have won by an even greater margin in an excellent performance. Coutts and Fleck controlled the centre of midfield once again meaning United dominated the ball as is now becoming the norm but it was Duffy who stood out as the star performer in an outstanding display. The visitors simply could not handle his running, touch and quality. It will have been a welcome sight to manager Chris Wilder after two games without a win, albeit games they should have won.

United opted to bring back Matt Done from the last league game and went with him and Sharp up top. Jake Wright was back fit but was on the bench as Wilder went with Basham, Ebanks Landell and O’Connell at the back.

Swindon began the game with an impressive start. They got on the ball and forced United back winning two early corners and from one came a great chance. Rossi Branco hit it but Moore made a great reaction save. Soon after a Rodgers free kick nearly was converted as the Blades began sloppily with Freeman also being booked for a foul. United finally came into the game and Freeman had one shot saved.

On 8 minutes there was a poignant moment as a round of applause went round the ground to mark the passing of the brave boy Kasabian who had passed away. At the end of this tribute, United nearly fittingly marked it with a goal as Duffy cleverly threaded the ball through to Done who beat the offside trap and was one on one. Sadly, his finish was too close to the keeper who made the save. It was the best chance of the game. Maybe Done actually had too long to think about it.

Thomas was booked for a foul on Sharp as the referee gave the advantage but Swindon cleared. Coutts and Fleck were now having most of the ball and Swindon were now sitting further and further back. The home side were now well on top and a corner saw a scramble with O’Connell and Sharp both blocked before it was eventually cleared. Soon after Duffy played another great ball into the path of Sharp who tried to lob the keeper as it bounced but Branco Rossi cleared off the line and then Lafferty’s goal bound shot from the clearance was saved by the legs of Vigouroux.

United continued to keep at Swindon and Sharp had another shot blocked just before the break.

Half time saw Swindon make one change with Hylton replacing Doughty.

It had been one way traffic at the end of the first half and it continued to start the second. Fleck made a great run and played in Lafferty whose cross was perfect for Sharp. The striker was right in front of goal but screwed wide when it seemed easier to score to the disbelief of the crowd.

Thankfully the opening goal came not long after. On 54 minutes, Lafferty and Fleck did the initial work and the cross came over to DUFFY who flicked the ball goal wards. It did not have much power but keeper Vigouroux who made the initial save, somehow scooped the ball behind him and towards the goal. He chased back and tried to jump on it before it crossed the line but most in the ground seemed to think he had got back too late and indeed there seemed little doubt with the officials who signalled for the goal. The keeper protested and booted the ball away in frustration but it was a big error, not in keeping with his performance which had been excellent before this mistake.

Two minutes later and it was 2-0. Freeman and Duffy were patient down the right and then played it back towards COUTTS who hit a superb low shot that went through bodies and in off the far post. A great goal and gave the Blades the cushion their domination had deserved.

United were now in buoyant move and Swindon could not handle them. The Blades swarmed around their opponents who kept giving it away and it was wave after wave of attacks now. It was total domination. Swindon simply could not get out as the midfield axis of Duffy, Coutts and Fleck continued to dominate the game with Done and Sharp willing workers and Laffety and Freeman surging down the flanks to support.

Sharp had a goal disallowed after a great cross from Duffy before the third came. Sharp was the architect down the left and sent over a lovely cross that cut out the whole defence and DUFFY was there to convert from close range.

Swindon had a rare chance when Delfouneso cut in and whipped a shot narrowly wide but this was one of the few times the visitors had even got in the United half!

The attacks kept coming and Done was denied by the legs of Vigouroux before Sharp had another shot blocked. Done was replaced by Lavery and the substitute linked well with Freeman before the cross was blocked. The fourth goal came when Ebanks Landell got down the right and put over a low cross that was converted by the substitute LAVERY. The contact was not the cleanest but it nested right in the corner giving him his first Blades goal.

He nearly had another soon after as more good work by Duffy saw him in but his shot was deflected over. United were running riot and Duffy then nutmegged his opponent drawing the ooos and aaaahhs from the crowd. Scougall and Clarke came on for the outstanding Duffy and Sharp before the end. More chances came with Lavery having a shot saved and then Clarke having an effort also saved; albeit offside in the additional four minutes of stoppage time.

United – Superb performance again. We once again dominated the ball for most of the game and recovered from a sluggish start where we could have gone behind. After this we dominated and should have been a few goals to the good at half time but eventually the goals came and it could have been anything by the end. We scored some good goals and had lot of other chances. We played some lovely football.

The midfield three were brilliant again. Duffy majestic and Coutts/Fleck controlled the ball and flow of the game. They could not handle Duffy at all. The front two did not score (again) but did work hard indeed the whole team worked so hard.

What impresses me most is when we have lost the ball we all chase and harry to get it back. It was like a pack of dogs at times as we hunted the ball down to get it back. They just coughed up possession and we got it back and went at them again. It was relentless. Even at the end when we were 4-0 up we continued this relentless approach Wilder talks about. The work ethic has improved massively.

On the ball we are playing neat and tidy football, moving it quicker than we have in seasons past and creating space by this quicker tempo. We move it on and get teams moved about. The opponents looked knackered at times due to this and we keep moving it on and left to right. This ends up when they have the ball they lose it due to fatigue or just lump it. The last 4 or 5 games we have totally dominated the ball and games. Teams are sitting in and we are having to find a way in. Today second half the weight of pressure and domination paid off. I think despite the Bury/Walsall frustrations we need to just keep it going. Sure, we may have a few games where it does not go in but most weeks and games if we keep the work ethic and ball control going we will win. Yes, we need more goals and maybe more overall from up top but if we win games I am not too concerned. I do think we may sign another striker in January. The biggest key (apart from hoping we can keep Ebanks Landell) though is keeping the midfield trio fit. They are out biggest advantage over teams at the moment.

We now have two poor sides to play who are both in the bottom four. We have to stay patient (as fans aswell as players) and keep the same level of play and work rate up. If we do that, not only for these two games but for the rest of the season, there will not be too many teams above us by the end.

Swindon - They started really well and most may have thought ‘hang on, we have a game on here!’ They attacked us and did not sit in and had a few chances. They looked a big side and were quick to the ball. They may have scored and we were pushed back. However, this only lasted for maybe 5-10 minutes. They then started to sit back more and we had most of the ball and they became more like the opponents we have seen down the Lane surrendering possession and territory. United controlled the final half hour of the first half and Swindon with some good saves, blocks and bit of fortune kept the game at 0-0 at half time.

They had still been second best despite the encouraging start. Second half we completely blew them away. It was so one sided as almost the whole half was played in the Swindon half. They could not cope with the pressure as we buzzed around them and they kept tossing it away and we kept going at them. They seemed stunned by the constant high press and did not know what to do. They almost seemed resigned to fact they would lose it and then have to defend again. They were sloppy but big credit to United who forced errors. After the first goal went in, you feared for them especially when the second came so soon after. You felt it was a matter of how many after that. They had a few breaks near the end but looked a beaten side who just wanted to come off long before they finally could. They were well beaten in every facet of the game.

It was odd as they had started well and looked to have a few big lads who could also play. They moved it around well and got down the flanks with some decent balls into the box too. Whether they just stopped what they were doing or United improved I am not sure but the performance from the rest of the game was poor.

They are a side who have lost a lot of players over the last few years and now have a very young team with a lot of loanees also. They have Tim Sherwood involved supporting the coach Williams. I worry for him as you feel often someone who had been a manager like Sherwood will do that again and you think he may end up being the principal man running things rather than Williams. Not sure it ever works having the system they are trying to employ. Due to the youthful nature of the side and the lack of experience, I fear it may be a struggle but they have beaten some decent sides this season (Bradford the other week) and if they can play the kind of football they did to open the game then they will be alright.

Opponent man of the match : Vigouroux. He made a mess of the first goal which I supposed was crucial but he made a lot of really good saves. He at times had no help in front of him as it was one way traffic. Without him the score could have easily been 7 or 8. The rest of Swindon’s side were really poor after they started well. The lad in midfield Kasim did not play (injured) and that was a plus for United as he is a decent player who I am surprised has not moved on.

Opponent Weak link : You could pick anyone of the defence really but the whole side struggled for 75 minutes of the game. The front players did little after the decent start and Obika was never in the game but most of the game was played in their final third. A few young lads on loan at the back; Jones (from Liverpool) and Furlong (QPR) really struggled with the movement of United’s players.

SUFC Player Ratings –

Moore 7.5/10 – Had little to do but given him an extra half mark for an excellent point blank save early on. This was crucial at this stage. Outside of this he had mainly a watching brief and other than a few kicks/regulation bits of work, it was an easy afternoon.

Freeman 7.5/10 – Actually started the game slowly as they got down that side a few times to begin the game and he cynically brought a lad down who went past him. After this, much like United; he grew into the game. He got forward and was involved in a lot of attacking moves. His touch and control is very underrated. He is a good footballer and athlete. He had one shot first half and another run and cross. Second half he got even better and put in 2 or 3 excellent crosses that just evaded players. He was involved in the second goal in the initial build up.

Lafferty 7/10 – Strange one as he does a lot of good things and some things you do not always notice easily. I have been quite critical of him to my mates but then I take a step back and think whilst he is not great at any one thing, he is not particularly bad at anything early. He is a real steady player. He plays the position well in that he gets in the right areas both defending and attacking. So many times he did get into a good position but his final ball was lacking first half with several crosses pulled behind or not beating the first man. He had a good second half I felt and I felt he was involved quite a lot down the left hand side. It may have been just helping it on or a simple pass but he did what he had to do. Not outstanding but a bits and pieces player who has been part of an improved unit.

Ebanks Landell 7/10 – Had little to do defensively. Early on he was tested as was the whole defence but then after this early wobble, we played most of the game in their half. He headed it and kicked it away when he had to. Also involved in the fourth with a run and cross down the right (may have mishit it as did Lavery!).

O’Connell 7/10- Thought he was a bit shaky early on with a few hospital balls across the line but he did improve and as above, did all the headers and clearances that he had to. He did play another bad ball that led to the Coutts booking. A player that I have been impressed with this season and feel he will get better.

Basham 8/10 – I have been critical of him at times as readers of these reports know but today he was excellent. He came onto the ball and won every 50/50. He showed good ability on the ball, using it sensibly and came out with more speed when dribbling out of the back. He was all over the field second half getting down the right or stepping into midfield. Cannot think of many bad things he did today. He came onto the ball and was determined in the challenge and positive when he had it. Only slight gripe and I have said it before is that when he clashes with players he can be quite weak. My Uncle remarked he has a poor centre of gravity and leads to him losing physical battles as when he leans into players he does not exert his force at the right body angle despite his bigger size! No idea what is he talking about!

Fleck 8/10 – Another very good performance. His touch and awareness of where he is, teammates and opponents are, is a joy to watch. He can move himself out of a tight area quickly to find space and then another United player. He showed some lovely touches and his passing both short and long was very good again. Looks a super signing. Him and Coutts are dominating teams at the moment and you would genuinely struggle to find a better midfield pairing. In short they are proper footballers. Touch, work rate, running and passing.

Coutts 8/10 –As above really. Gets into great areas to get the ball and then kind of quarterbacks our play. He brings it out and links with others. Lovely quick feet, links well with others and plays those little one twos and wall passes that sees us move from a cramped area into space and into the final third. Can move it long as well and some delightful Crossfield balls. I was very critical of him last season. I always recognised his talent on the ball but his work rate and running was lacking. This season he is so much fitter and his work ethic is matching his ball play. Never thought I would say it but we need to get him tied down to a longer contract. Only disappointing thing was he got booked and I believe missed the Coventry game now. It was a poor ball from O’Connell but maybe he should have just let the player go considering the score line. Maybe he does need to shoot more too!

Duffy 9/10 – Brilliant. Ran the game (along with Coutts and Fleck). First half he was good as he was our main threat at providing chances with 2 or 3 balls nearly leading to openings and balls to Done and to Sharp were superb spots. He got into areas they could not pick up and was just a constant threat. So busy and hard to pick up. When he got the ball he was able to link with others and provide that link between attack and midfield. Teams are struggling to pick him up or know who marks him. Second half he got even better and gave a superb half. He got on the ball, prompted and probed and scored two good goals getting into the box. He was behind everything we did and some of the skills were outrageous (one where he dummied and then put the ball through an opponents legs) and was ‘taking the micky’ at times. When you watch him play like that you wonder at 31 what he has done with his career playing largely lower leagues sadly? He has so much ability and is such a clever player. Really enjoyed watching his performance. We need to keep him fit and glad we took him off before the end before someone kicked him (I would have as only way to stop him!) and he rightly got a standing ovation from most in Bramall Lane.

Done 7/10 – He missed a few really good chances including a one on one and then another good chance second half and quite a few other balls he could not quite get on the end of. In overall play he kept it simple when he had it but at times it maybe did not stick enough. However, for all these faults you have to say we generally do much better when he plays. He works so hard and it may be a cliché and may be mocked but that ability to chase down defenders/keepers and harry and hassle is such a big plus. He made the keeper kick it out of play twice by chasing down and did the same with defenders. His running does create gaps and openings for others. The crowd recognised this when he came off. Hopefully a goal will come. He is the better option than the other strikers we have currently and yes he needs to get some goals but if we keep winning and he contributes in other ways then I am not too concerned.

Sharp 7/10 – Like Done, the goals not coming at the moment. He did miss a golden chance when he screwed wide with the goal at his mercy. He missed a few other decent openings too and it would not go in. Did work hard and got down the channels also and set up the third with a great cross. At the moment it is not going for him in front of goal but he needs to just keep the work ethic up. I think both strikers put a shift in today even if the finishing and at times ruthlessness that Wilder demands is not quite there in the striking department.

Subs

Lavery – Still has not completely convinced me in bits I have seen and that was same today but of course he did score. The goal was a bit of a mishit which may be ironic considering Sharp and Done had cleaner striker that were saved/missed but shows that happens if you put it into the corners! His overall play was mixed. Ball came off him a few times and not sure he works as hard as I would like for someone trying to get more game time. He did link a few times with others and showed his pace to get in behind. Had another shot deflected over and then at the end the keeper saved one from another decent chance. Actually could have had a hat trick in time he was on!

Clarke - Looked clumsy and slow albeit in limited time. We lose fluidity as often he is quite static. He did have a few flicks and runs near the end but at the moment is better as an impact sub in games. He badly missed one chance from a Freeman cross but was deemed offside fortunately for him!

Scougall – Busy when he came on as he helped us continue to force them to give the ball up. Game was won at the stage he came on. A good energy player that can keep the work ethic going when he comes on in games.

Manager – Wilder 8.5/10 – A 4-0 win and a superb team performance. It had work ethic, desire and endeavour. It also had good football, clever play and chances aplenty. After a poor start (we need to make sure we do better in that regard) we got stronger as the game went on and for 75 minutes completely dominated. Wilder got the call right in bringing Done back and even though people were slightly surprised Wright did not play, Basham had an excellent game. He also got the subs right in terms of who he brought on and when he did it. A great day at the office.

Ref – Actually had a decent game. Started the game very fussy. Brought back three fools for both sides that to me could have seen an advantage played. He then realised he could play the advantage and did this a few times and also rightly booked a Swindon player after the ball had gone dead; after one such advantage. He started to be less noticeable which is a good sign. To be fair he got most of the bookings right. Freeman and Coutts for us and Branco and Vigoroux for them. The first three were for cynical fouls when the opponent has got away and the other was for dissent when the keeper complained and then booted the ball away after it went in.

On the first goal I thought on first reaction they got it right. I could certainly see grass between the line and the ball eve from my vantage point in the South Stand. He seemed very angry the keeper but only one other player really appealed. The rest just looked at him as if to say you have made a mess of that (Later on the defence were causing problems for the keeper of course).

We have had some stinkers in recent weeks but Gavin Ward gave a decent performance. The linesman were different! One was very flag happy and the other seemed to let a lot of offsides go. Mind you Done and Sharp were offside a lot! A few obvious foul throws from them were ignored down the South Stand side.

Crowd – Another 19,000+ crowd which is still very good with Christmas coming and considering Swindon brought maybe only 300-400 fans at most. United fans were appreciative of another excellent performance and are recognising not only the good football and play but the desire of the whole team. Even at 4-0 the crowd saw the closing down and chasing of players. The difference in mentality between the side this season and last season is night and day. It is really enjoyable to go down the Lane again and I have not said that for a few years since maybe that Clough side when we had the cup run and ended the season so well.

Great report DB, a really enjoyable read and always well put together (even when you're pissed off with 'em)
Your comment about 'a pack of dogs' perfectly sums up the new mentality of the team. No opponent gets time on the ball, even if in a yard of space someone will be sprinting towards him.
This work ethic plus a fair amount of individual skill in the team has made us so good to watch as a FOOTBALLING side

Excellent report again Deadbat - can't disagree with any of it.

Think I read on another thread that Coutts will be spared the banned game as the yellow card count is reset in early December (last week I think).

Despite the result big Credit to swindon, because finally we had a team that came to bramall lane with some ambition not just boringly parking the bus for 90mins & got to see my 1st game of football since mk dons in October, as i seen 3 attack v defence training session in that 10 day period 2 weeks ago

On the game 1st half I thought hear we go again more of the same were dominant created alot & nothing to show for it as we're wasteful, done miss when he was through on goal 1 on 1 almost criminal but that 2nd half was faultless just outstanding midfield trio just cut through swindon defence like butter Clinicalness ive been wanting for last 5 games whether at 1 & 2-0 the pressure was , it just flowed. some great goals duffy goal fortunate but from where I was correct decision. Goalies always make me laugh in those situations because ball could hit back of the net & goalkeepers would still protest it never crossed the line. Coutts goal was brilliant absolute bullet no chance it was being stopped
Just why couldnt we have done the 2 yrs ago in playoffs haha :D

Agree with the report, a good read, I always feel knackered after reading it though.

I thought Wilder should have got 10/10 as he got everything right, no mistakes, perfect team, perfect tactics, even his post match interviews are bang on the money. UTB

We played with real desire and purpose, typified by Duffy playing a great ball to Billy, who tried to chip it over the keepers head and into goal, only a last gasp header by one of the Swindon defenders prevented this. Now in previous seasons, our players would have shrugged and let the ball go out, but Billy put a spurt on, got the ball and put in back for Lafferty to have a crack on goal (great shot and only the outstretched leg of the keeper stopped it). That's how much we want to win, that's how much we want to attack and frighten keepers and defenders, relentless stuff, love it!

Oh and thanks for the report DB, pretty much as I saw the game, everyone put a shift in yesterday.

Isnt it a sign of how good we are , that we are actually slightly disappointed at only 4. Nigel Adkins should hang his head in shame. What are he and Hammond doing these days ,just sat at home counting their money they stole from us ?

There's nothing sinister about Adkins (or Clough's) time at the Lane. They weren't trying to rip us off.
It's just that their best is nowhere near Wilder's basic.

Where else can you get a match report like that? I love my Sunday Observer but the Sport section is of course Premier League so of no interest to me. Deadbat's reports are Premier League quality and an excellent read..... maybe only a matter of time before he gets the opportunity to do Blades reports in the PL. Don't bet against CW doing a DB repeat folks!
PS - I think Matty will do a fine job for us in the Championship next season too.......

Good read as always.
Noticed a Darnell Furlong in the Swindon team. Son of former loanee Paul Furlong who scored twice for us in 4 apps in 2002.

Only quibble I would have is the ref. Thought he was excellent all the way through. Easily the best I've seen this season.

Thought the God's smiled on us. Usually when a goalkeeper goes into time wasting/feigning injury mode it takes a last minute winner to gain retribution. Not often you see it dealt out as swiftly and decisively as that twat got just three minutes after his disgraceful rolling around in his goal area situation. Oh how we laughed . . . .
