The Blades made it back-to-back victories and continued their impressive home form, as they saw off Leicester City with a convincing win at Bramall Lane on New Years Day. Goals from Japhet Tanganga, Tom Cannon and Callum O’Hare saw the free scoring home side continue to find the net. Jordan James late goal was a mere consolation but the Blades were good value for the win – as they saw off a really poor Leicester side with room to spare. United are the form team in the division, winning 7 games out of 10, and are now as close to the top 6 as the bottom three- as their resurgence continues,.
United made two changes with McCallum in for Burrows and Bamford in for Campbell – as the Blades tried to negotiate a busy Christmas period. Former United loanee Hamza Choudhury was on the bench who started with another ex-loanee – Luke Thomas began at left back. The Foxes had been in inconsistent form but had beaten rivals Derby in their last home game but their manager Marti Cifuentes was still under some pressure form sections of the fanbase.
United started on top with Brooks and Seriki looking to cause problems down the right-hand side and Soumare carrying on from his impressive performance at Stoke with some crunching early challenges. Bamford had an effort at Stolarczyk and then Cannon had an effort blocked after a short corner. United were controlling midfield and the Foxes were struggling to get a foothold in the game. Another corner was not cleared and Brooks should have perhaps done better but he poked over on the stretch. United then worked space and Soumare and O’Hare combined to fashion a chance for Bamford but he rather telegraphed his finish and Stolarczyk pushed the ball away.
The Blades seemed in complete control and Leicester could not make an forays into their home side’s half. Fatawu theatrically threw himself to the floor and was rightly cautioned and then the same player tried an ambitious shot from fully 40 yards that was well off target. United were back on the attack and Cannon did well to win a corner and was working hard down the sides to ensure the Leicester centre backs did not have any rest. United won another corner on 36 minutes and the opening goal duly came. McCallum swung it over and TANGANGA rose relatively unopposed to power his header into the net and could celebrate his first Blades goal after several near misses this season.
United were good value for the lead and had continues to look the hungrier side. Soumare did well again and Cannon was continuing to be a nuisance and forced another corner. United went in at the break deservedly leading a rather insipid Leicester side that had simply not got going.
The Blades came out in the second half and similar to the game at the 365 Stadium, looked determined not to have a drop off, as they have on a number of occasions this season. The second goal came when Brooks was quickest to react as Thomas dithered and headed on before cooly centering for CANNON to sweep his low finish into the far corner. It was his first goal at the Lane but his second in successive games and another against a former club!
Choudhury and Ayew came on for Skipp and Silko Thomas with the visiting fans making their feelings clear on the performance from their players. United continued to look in complete control and Brooks and Seriki were combining well and Riedewald and Soumare winning all the loose balls in the middle.
Mavididi brought down Soumare and was cautioned before a rare attack saw Nelson fire over the bar but even though United sat off and the visitors finally had more of the ball, they were not creating much. Campbell came on for Bamford before Page and Monga replaced Mavididi and Cordova Reid. United now seemed content to hold what they had and whilst Leicester won a succession of corners, they had not tested Michael Cooper. Hamer replaced Brooks who got a standing ovation for his performance.
Soumare hit a curling effort not far wide after good build up down the left but after a trio of substitutes saw Arblaster, Chong and Burrows come on for Soumare, Cannon and McCallum – the third goal came to seal the three points. Arblaster played a delightful ball round the side that set Seriki free and the cross was perfect for O’HARE to finish from close range.
There was 5 minutes of stoppage time and the one disappointment was United could not keep a clean sheet as JAMES shrugged off Riedewald for a rare break away and after exchanging passes with Ayew, hit a long range shot that clipped off Bindon and found the corner. Despite this, the Blades saw out the remaining time with no further dangers and cantered to the three points and another victory. It was their second double completed over a club, in the space of a few days.
United – Excellent performance where we dominated for most of the game and completely controlled things. We played some good football, won the battles, picked up the loose stuff and took the game to them. We maybe did not create tons again (like Stoke) but the intensity and the way we approached the game meant we penned them back a lot. It was mostly one way traffic and we got the deserved opener. We did not drop off after the break and scored a well-made and taken second and this seemed to kill the game. We could have had more but then did drop off a bit and changes came for both teams and our intensity dropped off a little bit but they did not really threaten too much. We score a lovely third goal which was superbly made from Arblaster and Seriki and O’Hare – who did not have his best day actually – gets a third which gave it more of a realistic scoreline. The late goal was irritating but did not matter too much. We were the better side as a team and individually. We controlled midfield, the forwards worked hard and caused problems and we had threats down the side – particularly the right. The centre backs were not worried and in the end we coasted to a win. Leicester were awful and well beaten but credit to United – as bad as they were- we still had to go out and put in a performance and we did that really well. It has been a great reaction to the incredibly disappointing defeat at Wrexham – with two well deserved wins. We won at Stoke and this was a deserved win but we put a more complete performance in tonight and beat an expensively assembled side that is inconsistent but still had some good players.
It was positive that we saw some players that have been much maligned in Soumare and Cannon – be two of our stand outs but I was really pleased at the combo play of Seriki and Brooks too- hoping they get a longer run now (granted we have another turnaround to a game quickly at the weekend) as teams are worried by pace and athleticism. Soumare has put together two really good games and Cannon finally looks a legitimate option who can score and cause problems. We need to keep the run going – we still need players in some areas to come in- but hopefully we can keep moving up the table. Playoff talk is still something a way off but we need to just keep steadily improving. We have two games that people will expect us to win in Oxford and Charlton but it does not always work like that -those teams will show more fight than Leicester and Stoke did probably. If we have the same attitude and mentality then we will be ok and win a lot more than we lose.
