Another game and another win for the newly crowned League One Champions as they saw off promotion chasing Bradford at a jubilant Bramall Lane. In form Leon Clarke scored again (a brace) and Billy Sharp was back amongst the goals. United’s first half performance was superb as they proved yet again the are streets ahead of the rest of the competition at this level. United’s wonderful pass and move football was seen in all its glory again as they completely dissected Bradford time and time again. There was no answer for United. Second half they eased off to a degree but comfortably saw the game out and got a comfortable three points against a well beaten City side who now must focus on the playoffs.

Manager Wilder changed things round again despite the unrelenting form and results. Ebanks Landell, Done and O’Shea were put back on the bench and in came Duffy, Freeman and Lafferty as United had a more familiar looking starting line up. Former City striker James Hanson missed out as he had not recovered from his calm injury. Marc McNulty was on the bench for United.

Bantams manager and former Blade McCall started with free scoring Charlie Wyke and former United men Tony McMahon and Nicky Law. Another ex-Blade, Billy Clarke (once on loan) was on the bench.

City magnanimously welcomed the Blades onto the field with a guard of honour which was a nice touch before they shook hands and lined up with United kicking towards the Bramall Lane end.

City seemed to start the game with a 3-5-2 formation in an attempt to counter act United’s formation and style of play but they struggled early to get a foothold in the game as Fleck and Coutts began to impose themselves. United slowly forced City back and neat work from Sharp and Clarke led to a half chance but McMahon cleared. United came again with Lafferty involved and Duffy got in a decent area but the City defence made a vital block. The first effort came when Fleck drove down the left and hit a powerful shot that nearly caught Doyle out at his near post but he pushed behind for a corner.

The opening goal came soon after. It came when after neat work down the left O’Connell drove forward and exchanged passed before running into the box and laying off for CLARKE. The big man stroked a first timer coolly into the far corner giving Doyle no chance. It was a lovely goal and showed the confidence of the home side.

United came again with Duffy and Fleck linking but Freeman was unable to get his cross over before Clarke then linked up well holding the ball up but Coutts could not get his shot off. It was superb stuff from the Blades and another great move led to the second goal on 20 minutes. This time Fleck was the architect after Lafferty made the running initially. Fleck drew his man and slipped inside to SHARP who beat the offside trap. As Doyle came out the United talisman clipped the ball past him into the far corner and it was 2-0. Another simple but oh so effective goal.

Manager McCall had seen enough already and his team were now in damage limitation mode seemingly. Dieng was sacrificed for Jones and he went to a more familiar formation in an attempt to carry some sort of threat to United in a game they simply that they were getting dominated.

Fleck was booked for a poor late tackle such was his enthusiasm to keep the fight going but soon after a different kind of interception, this time from O’Connell fairly stopped City in their tracks. They had a brief flurry with Marshall causing some problems and from a cross Wyke should have done better but headed wide.

Wright was then booked for a foul on Marshall and the game settled down after United’s early blitz. Still they kept playing some impressive one touch stuff with the Coutts-Fleck-Duffy axis too much and Basham and O’Connell first to the key balls behind them. Clarke and Sharp were also proving a handful up top.

City tried to get more men forward but this may have been their undoing as they got caught on the counter just before the break. United broke up an attack and were away with Fleck finding Duffy and the midfielder springing clear. The home side were three on three and Fleck played in Sharp who was in on goal on the angle but unselfishly squared it for CLARKE who clinically swept home to lift the roof off Bramall Lane again. It was more superb football and brilliant counter attacking play.

The half time whistle saw the Blades given a standing ovation for a scintillating first half performance as the Champions had completely outplayed a good Bradford side.

The second half saw City begin with more purpose and McMahon hit a dipping shot that Moore wisely pushed away rather than caught as it bounced in front of him. Coutts was booked for a challenge as City tried to break away and the game became a bit scrappy now with two stoppages for head injuries for either side. City had a few corners but did not have any clear chances although one cross fizzed across Moore’s goal. Sharp had a decent chance but his effort was blocked after good work from Freeman and City eventually scrambled clear.

Duffy was tiring and came off for Carruthers on 66 minutes. Vincelot was the first City man in the book for a lunge on Coutts but the game really did become stop start now which maybe suited both sides. United wanted to see out the job and City maybe were more conscious of not getting a real mauling! City had a few more crosses come in but O’Connell made some good blocks and then as the game entered the final 15 minutes, the Blades came out and could have scored more goals.

Firstly, Sharp had a header saved after a good cross came in from Carruthers before Sharp had a chance blocked and Basham then missed twice with a difficult reaction shot and then a header. United were now passing the ball around and it had entered exhibition stage with the fans loving every minute. Three minutes of stoppage time mattered little as this game has been won a long time ago and even though City won a late corner, the referee did not even allow them to take it as he below the full-time whistle. The dream for 100 points continues with now just two games between Wilder and this target.

Some fans came on the pitch in the euphoria before eventually the Blades team could return and give a proper thanks to the supporters and get the much-deserved recognition from the fans.

United – Another thoroughly enjoyable afternoon at the Lane. We won and won well. It was great football and first half we were absolutely superb. We passed the ball well, cut them open and scored three brilliant goals. We could have had more and it was men against boys. Despite them being 4th in the league we looked streets ahead of them. It was champagne football and we really took them to the cleaners. A quick read on the Bradford forum shows how good we were (might have already been posted by Roygbiv so sorry for repeating some things but worth reading again!)

‘Today wasn't about us. It was about Sheff united. They humbled us and showed us how far behind the top level of this division we are. ‘

Sheffield are on another level. Crisp fast passing, constant movement.

Well, any of the delusions chucked around on here about how there is 'no better side than us in this league' was truly put to bed. The fitness, intensity and ability to trap the ball dead was on another level from city. Every Sheff united attack that streamed forward was underpinned by each man knowing where his teammate would be to the inch, and also anticipating what pass would come next.

‘We made them look like Barcelona at times ‘

‘Simple fact is Sheffield Utd are way better than everyone else in this very average division, as their points total shows.’

Second half we did not quite overpower them in the same way but still created a few chances and Sharp and Basham both had chances and could have scored. Bradford improved but they could not get much worse but have to say it was more about United. We were just too good.

I think if we had wanted more goals both today and at Port Vale, we could have got them. We won both games 3-0 and with loads to spare. It showed that the players were almost playing within themselves and that they won both at a canter.

We really were superb and I see no reason why we cannot get 100 points. It is at the point where we are so oozing confidence and for the players it seems like games cannot come quick enough. It is so enjoyable to watch and for one cannot wait for MK next week. For the party atmosphere and number of Blades travelling of course, but also to watch more of this great football and three more points that I expect we will get.

Bradford – They got completely blown away first half. You would think they would be the ones who had so much riding on the game but United roared into tackles, won the 50-50’s and passed them to death. They could not handle us and other than a few breaks and decent crosses, offered little going the other way. It showed how good other teams think we are and how worried they are about us when they change formations even after decent runs. City have been on a good run and won most of their games recently but seemed to begin with a 3-5-2 with Marshall just off Wyke and Vincelot at the back with McArdle and Knight Percival. It was a bit of a disaster as our players, tried and tested at playing this formation completely controlled midfield and swamped them all over the field. It was 2-0 and McCall changed it putting on Jones up top and going back to a 4-4-2. This put Marshall back wide and they started to improve. They at least had a few decent attacks and got some sort of foothold into the game but the third killed it.

After the break, they were playing for pride. They had one shot from McMahon and a few crosses that fizzed in but cannot recall too many clear chances. Indeed, United had 3 or 4 more good chances to add to the score and continued to keep the ball better, look more determined and still were the better side. They sort of just gave up and were caught between trying to get one back and damage limitation and ended up doing neither but we could not really profit and missed a few chances to make it 4 or 5. It would not have flattered us really. Surprised they did not make another couple of changes but they just left it with both sides only making one sub in the end which is rare these days.

I expected much better from them today. They had a real chance of 2nd with Bolton wobbling but have chucked that away but sometimes you have to just give credit to the opposition and that is us. We were too good for them.

I thought at the start of the season they may struggle with Parkinson going (City fans are quite critical of the mess he left them in and style of football they played even though he got them up a few years ago and also took them on the cup runs etc). They had lost a few players and the players they brought in were a bit of a mixed bag really. They had some experience but lacked quality I felt to make the top 6 so McCall has done well and of course if they had not drawn as many games; could have been a real threat for second. McCall by all accounts has got them playing more of a football orientated type game and they have started to lower age of side (Hanson for Wyke is indicative of that) as they try and evolve from the side that did well but was probably not sustainable under Parkinson.

They do have some decent players in likes of Marshall, Cullen and Wyke but not sure they have enough power and nous to go up. They were in the playoffs last year but lost out to Millwall. I feel they may suffer a similar fate this year but maybe at Wembley. Just a hunch. Could be completely wrong.

Opponent man of the match : Mark Marshall was the main threat for me. He drifted around the field; got into little pockets in the same way as Duffy does for us and looked really lively. Decent on both feet and able to jink in and out; he looks a player that could have done a lot better than the journeyman who has been around the lower leagues/non-league most of his career.

Up top; the lad Wyke was lively-ish but he missed a few half chances failing to properly connect. Not sure he is quick enough to play much higher up really. Many City fans may feel they have got the better players and one for the future over Hanson but United needed Hanson to help them get over the line. They needed a player for now after 6 years here. We have not lost a game since Hanson signed. Next season is for another day. Like of Hanson and Clarke will not be regulars I do not think but will give us real threats from the bench and squad depth.

Opponent Weak link : Take your pick. The two centre halves were pulled about all game and rally struggled to handle the movement and work rate of Sharp and Clarke. Knight Percival was given a torrid time all game and Clarke ragged him about all game. He really did struggle and looked like he could not wait for full time. Probably the worst player was the lad Dieng. He looked like startled deer in headlights as our quick, incisive football intersected their side and he was chasing shadows. Lost his man twice on attacks in the lead up to goals. Came off after 20 minutes as McCall hooked him. He was not injured either.

The two former Blades were not great. Tony McMahon had 2 or 3 long range shots including only real save Moore had to make but he left big gaps down his side as we attacked at will first half. Nicky Law was poor and other than a few neat touches were outclassed by Fleck, Coutts and Duffy.

SUFC Player Ratings –

Moore 7/10 – Made one save from McMahon’s bouncing shot which he was right to parry behind. Made a few other standard saves and his handling generally was good. Indeed, I cannot recall any mistakes he has made in the last few weeks/run in. Only slight criticism may be a few crosses that went right across and he did not come for them but they were a few decent balls. City’s keeper Doyle similarly saw some crosses go right past him at the other end.

Freeman 6.5/10 – I have to say; he was maybe not quite as good as he has been today. I felt he struggled at times with the lad Marshall when he went down the left. A few miscontrols or where he knocked it out for a corner. Also, went to deck a few times trying to get a free kick. He was still ok but his standards have been so high that I feel he just was not as good as most of the season. Still showed some good run and neat bits of play down the right at times. Showed again what a lovely first touch he does have as he took quite a few aerial balls out of the sky to bring down and then move forward after.

Lafferty 6.5/10 – He was involved in some of our better pieces of play first half. He made the second goal with a run and pass to Fleck and also put a really good cross in to start the game that just evaded the strikers. He also put in a few poor crosses and telegraphed two or three balls straight to the full back. Second half he was a bit mixed and he did some neat and tidy things but also played the wrong ball or was a bit slow to react. He lost the ball in lead up to the Wright booking. Wright let him know! A steady player that as I have said before maybe does not get the praise he deserves.

Basham 8.5/10 – Brilliant again. Just immense as he attacked every ball, won every ball and drove forward. Never missed a header, tackled superbly and showed lovely fleet footed play on the ball. Gets shunted about position wise a lot but that is because Wilder knows he can instantly adapt. Today he was back at centre back but continued his impressive form. Love his attitude and he really does deserve promotion. Against some lively attackers in Wyke and Jones, Basham won the battle and afforded them very few chances (couple of half chances).

O’Connell 8.5/10 – Keeps getting better and better. His commitment continues to be of such a level that he looks like he wants to win so much more than opponents. That is not just generally but in every loose ball and 50/50. He makes everything his. He had more runs forward including the one for the first goal that led to him setting up Clarke. He continued to career into tackles, blocks and won everything but also defended sensibly getting his body in the way and playing it calmly when he had to. After all the euphoria and the cult status he has now developed would have been easy for him maybe not to be quite ‘at it’ but he was top notch again.

Wright 7.5/10 – Like a broken record but just steady again. Let the two lads either side attack everything and win all the balls forward whilst he just picked up the pieces. He got in a few good blocks from crosses and shots also. Got a booking for a cynical foul which is in his make-up but his fouls are normally ‘good fouls’ if you know what I mean! Basically, he gets his monies worth when he gets booked as he make sure they stop attacks or good chances to break. Kept up his incredible record and has just 2 games to preserve it now! Would be something else to go all season undefeated. Would have enjoyed today being a Bradford lad.

Fleck 8/10 – Very good yet again. He was full of running all game, getting on it and driving at opponents, winning tackles and dictating play. He made the second with a run and ball to Sharp and was involved in most of our good play first half. Seems to be all over the place at times and he can do the defensive work in midfield and then suddenly he is up supporting the attack. Technically he is excellent and shows such nimble feet and his passing continues to be top notch. Only negative and not sure it is because we needed a dirty b*****d in there is that he got a booking for a bad foul and then committed a few more and was walking a tight rope a bit. Thought Wilder might take him off but he was trusted not to do anything daft and he kept his head for the closing stages. Glad, he does get some fouls in and makes sure teams do not have it easy. We have needed this. Been superb this season and the best midfielder in the division. Coutts is not far behind. On a Bradford forum, a City fan when describing City’s midfield noted how they never got close to the ‘wonderful John Fleck’

Coutts 8/10 – Another impressive performance. He began a bit slowly but gradually grew into the game and after we scored he started to relax and pass it around. He got on the ball when he could and kept it nice and simple. Did not quite play as many long diagonal or probing balls today and it was more simple give and go or just moving it on. Keeps the ball so well under pressure and uses his body well to move away from other players. Shields it well and also manages to move it into space or know exactly where his teammates are. Yet another metronomic performance where he gets it and just moves it on. A few times I noticed he was jogging a bit and walking back when they attacked and reminded me of the Coutts of last year but we were 3-0 up at this stage so can kind of let him off! Did pick up a booking though for putting his foot in. That would not have happened last season!

Duffy 8/10 – Thought first half he was excellent as he got into those little pockets and caused a whole manner of problems. Put in a few good crosses but also overplayed a few. His running off the ball caused them no end of issues. They did not know where he was playing or who was picking them up. They had to change formation a few times and try and contend with the likes of him and the rest of the midfield. He made the third with a great run and pass to Sharp. His passing was mixed but that ability to drift off the front men and then move into midfield also and be the person who just helps us move the ball on was key again. Typically, he does tire and that did happen again and he rarely has finished games this season. Second half he was not as influential and despite the other two being booked and Wilder may have been tempted to take one off so as not to risk a red card.

Sharp 8/10 – Back to his best today after some poor games recently. He has look tired and not been really at it; save for maybe that second half at Northampton and not looked like scoring really. Today he could and maybe should have had a hat trick. Had a shot saved second half, another one blocked early on in the second half and then missed a header when maybe he ought to have done a bit better. He scored a typical Sharp finish; coolly converted with his left foot and was a real menace. All those that say he could not play with Clarke may have to rethink after today. They linked well, moved City about and pulled them all over. They both held it up, ran into the channels and brought others into play. He actually had some renewed energy today and a few times bustled past defenders but in McArdle found someone who lacks foot speed like him so that helped! Hoping he can maybe get a few more goals (1 needed for 200 League goals, is it?) but 30 might be beyond him now. However, pleased he got one today after a recent dip and his reaction at the end when Sinclair gave him the microphone summed up how he feels and he cannot stop smiling.

Clarke 8.5/10 – What a lift he has given us since coming back in. that is not to say Hanson had not been playing well but he has come in and got us the key goals. He has now scored 4 in 5 and showed some great finishes. Both todays goals were made to look easy but they were not as he simply passed the ball into the net. Scored with a left foot finish and also a right foot finish. Other than the goals he held it up and showed real strength. His touch was good again and he also ran around a lot more than I have ever seen and was constantly chasing defenders down. He really did put a shift in and also showed some surprising pace as he chased down balls and got them turned.

Subs

Carruthers – Nothing amazing but nothing poor. Just solid. Gave us another body in midfield and ended up playing down the right as we looked to stop runs of Meredith who was linking well with Marshall and causing Freeman a few problems. He was functional playing a few neat passes but he also showed he needs to get a lot fitter as he is not at level of the other midfielders we have in terms of ability to get around the pitch.

Manager – Wilder 8/10 – A rip roaring first half where he had the team prepared and at it again. There has been let up and that is down to him. We were prepared and made sure we did what we were good at but also took advantage of their weaknesses and we seem super prepared for every team we play against. He keeps moving the team around slightly so we have the main men playing but also keeping some fresh who need to be. He has kept everyone motivated and ensured that despite all the plaudits when they cross the line, they have been professional and committed to winning ever game. I see no reason why that will not continue in the last few games. More to come of the praise for him in my end of season report.

Ref – Paul Tierney. He started the game ok. The bookings for Fleck and Wright were correct as were poor late tackles and regulation yellows. The Coutts one seemed a bit harsher and the Clarke one even more so as he was being fouled originally! Vincelot got one for pulling back Coutts. I thought that was correct as he had committed a few before that. I actually thought after a decent beginning he started to make some odd decisions both ways and became a bit fussy. The game had gone and should have flowed more but became a bit stop start. He was obsessed with every free kick being taken from just the right spot (both ways). Not sure he had much choice on the two head injuries as you have to stop it. McCall was fuming on one but after this we were not going to give it to them in our final third and of course would kick it out further down the field. Bradford fans claimed a few handballs that seemed like they were just drilled into our men and then ironically their lad made a blatant hand ball! A few awful foul throws were missed and the assistant on the John Street side seemed like he was desperate to get involved in the game.

Crowd – 27,000 almost in the Lane. There were some seats spare in the wings of the Kop but it was fairly full. The South Stand was packed and the John Street only had some gaps towards the away end. The upper tier was not close to being full. Was a little disappointing that we could not completely fill the ground today but I guess some are saving themselves for Chesterfield.

Bradford fans filled the lower tier and were noisy to start with but the first half kind of stunned them as United fans purred over the performance as they took Bradford apart. The oles began in earnest and United knocked it about superbly. It became all so easy and United fans could scarcely believe how good we were playing. Again!

I felt the noise level died off after this and second half as the game petered out there were only sporadic chants maybe from both ends. Bradford fans mocked that it was quiet but maybe after Northampton and then also the raucous noise at Port Vale; United fans needed a rest. Maybe it was all just too easy!

The only real criticism is the ridiculous pitch invasion at the end. Why fans have to do that I do not know. What do they get out of it? They seem desperate for a bit of attention and worryingly it is not just young lads or teenagers but grown men. The Northampton game was completely different and I kind of expected it for the last game but today? To look at some of them as they gaze up at the stands and seem to think they are receiving adulation is startling. Some of them really are not the brightest.

Worryingly we will probably see the same at MK Dons for goals/end of game and same against Chesterfield. Be nice if we had some decent police presence (a la Port Vale) to stop it. Trouble is as soon as a few go on, then they cannot stop it. With just stewards to stop it, fans really do not care. They know no one can stop them. Worries me that for the last game there will be so many on that it will take an age for them to get off and even when they leave and they finally do the trophy presentation, some will spoil it again.

Thankfully today most fans just booed and asked them to get off. This finally happened and the clubs decided to let the players come back on to properly applaud the players. I was not sure why we did a lap of honour really – it was not the last game but I suppose it was the first game since we have gone up/won the league? Nice to see the players celebrating at the Lane for the first time since we have gone up and they deserve all the plaudits they get.

Right, be back after the MK Dons game next Sunday with another report. Still working on the end of season ‘School Report’ also.

Clarke has 5 in 4.

Lafferty was a bit wasteful in possession first half with some uncharacteristic passes to an opponent. Couple of great crosses and good running.
O Connell won everything, he was superb.
Fleck was just Fleck. The BEST midfield player in this league by a country mile.

Huge praise for Leon. Suddenly looks very quick and strong, and can stick the ball in the net. Perhaps it's a good job that the Clarke of recent games hasn't been available all season or we might well have embarrassed the competition even more.

Clarke could have found himself sent off on another day. That elbow could easily have been deemed a red card offence so I am not going to complain about the ref.

I haven't seen it back but it was right in front of me and I didn't think he did much wrong. Unfortunately SKy don't seem to be re-showing the game and I forgot to record it.

There's only one player close, and that's Paul Coutts.

Great report and marks spot on for me.
