The Blades were pegged back and had to settle for a draw in a disappointing end to the first home game of the season at Bramall Lane. Goals from Gus Hamer and Kieffer Moore gave United a flying start but the Blades failed to build on this and QPR fought back superbly in the second half. Goals from Jimmy Dunne and a late finish from Lyndon Dykes gave the visitors a deserved point as the home side offered very little in the second half, a far cry from the excellent first half showing from the home team. Jack Colback was sent off for dissent but Rangers were undeterred in their efforts to get back into the game and will be delighted with the point. For United, the same undoing’s from last season, albeit with half a new side out, came to the fore as they failed to see out a game they should have won comfortably.
Manager Chris Wilder names the same side that won at Preston. New signings Michael Cooper, and Jesurun Rak Sayki were on the bench joining the impressive debutants from the week Harry Souttar and Sydie Peck, who had signed a new contact prior to the game. QPR also gave a debut to new winger Karamoko Dembele from the start with new Japanese signing Koki Saito on the bench.
Despite Rangers having an attack in the first minutes, United settled and started the game well with Hamer and O’Hare looking to get on the ball and into dangerous pockets. Souza was influential with a number of crunching tackles to ensure United kept possession. The game was being played almost exclusively in the Rangers half and the Blades were probing to create openings. When it came, so did the opening goal on only 6 minutes. It came from patient build up and O’Hare fed HAMER who arrowed a lovely shot into the corner and gave him his second goal of the season.
On 13 minutes, the lead was doubled. Again, O’Hare was part of the build up and his ball fed Hamer who sent over an equally precise pass into the path of MOORE who scored easily at the far post. United were looking imperious in attack and with the two ex-Coventry man to the fore and Arblaster and Souza controlling midfield, it seemed like there was only one team in the game.
Souza’s over zealous approach saw him cautioned but Varane was then booked for his foul on the Brazilian. United’s dominant start was not built on and the game became scrappier as Rangers stayed in the game and the Blades were unable to go for the jugular. Anderson pulled up taking a corner and Smyth came on for the visitors but United still seemed comfortable and the away side had rarely threatened and with the attacking threats the Blades possessed, it seemed the home side had another gear they could move into.
However, after a change at the break from QPR saw Colback come on for Varane and the game seemed different as the visiting team played higher up the field and were winning far more of the loose stuff. The midfield was now being won by those in opposition gold and United seemed unable to react or get a foothold. Cook had to get a block in on O’Hare but this was a rare moment for the Blades as Rangers forced them back. From a corner, DUNNE flicked in at the near post and they were back in the game.
Celar then had an effort saved from Davies from close range as Rangers won a succession of corners. United struggled to keep the ball and were offering nothing attacking wide. Souttar came on for Gilchrist as Ahmedhodzic went to right back as the Blades tried to see the game out but struggled for control even if there were few chances for Rangers.
A fussy referee carded Hamer and then booked Colback twice in succession seeing the sub fail to finish the game as the red card came out in a strange few minutes of officiating. Slimane and Peck came on for O’Hare and Brooks for the home side. However, despite being reduced to ten men, QPR kept coming at the Blades and had DYKES on and on 88 minutes he got the leveller. The ball over the top saw Burrows miss the flight of the ball and fellow sub Saito was in and his pull back was precise and rammed home from the Scottish striker to stun the Blades.
On came Brewster and Rak Sayki for United as the game entered 8 minutes of stoppage time but despite some late attacks, it seemed all a bit too little, too late and nothing came from a few attacks as United finally tried to mount some raids into the visiting box after barely going near it much of the second half. No clear openings resulted and the final whistle signalled a share of the spoils with the away side much happier with the final outcome as shown by their reaction on full time as they saluted their fans.
