The Blades made it two home league wins on the bounce as they followed up the win against Leeds with another 2-1 win against QPR. This was a different kind of game to many that we have seen previously at the Lane. United were without key man John Fleck and lacked the fluency of many games at the Lane but got in front deservedly thanks to a rare goal from a corner with Richard Stearman turning home Leon Clarke’s flick. After the break John Lundstram converted Billy Sharp’s cross and that seemed to be that but poor defending saw Luke Freeman run unopposed to fire home and then the game changed. For the final stages United had to hang on and Rangers created a few decent chances but the home side dug in and did enough to claim the win. United are now right back in the playoff mix and with a game to come Friday at struggling Hull have a chance to put pressure on the sides above them.

Manager Wilder was forced into one change from the last league game as the suspended John Fleck was replaced by John Lundstram in the centre of the park. Both James Wilson and Ricky Holmes missed out through injury but David Brooks was back amongst the substitutes. QPR who had won at the weekend; started with Matt Smith and Connor Washington up top and had former Blade loanee Alex Baptiste in their rear-guard.

United kicked off but somehow conceded a corner not long after this as Smith’s flick at the near post was deflected behind. The Blades took time to settle but slowly started to come into the game with Clarke looking livelier than he had for some time. From a break down the right a cross came over and Smithies flapped at it but Baldock blazed over. Soon after United had a good chance as the ball came over from Stevens, Lundstram had his first shot saved by the keeper and then Clarke took too long and his shot deflected behind for a corner. Staring to turn the screw United then had appeals for a spot kick as Sharp was felled by a clumsy challenge from Scowen who certainly went through the back of the striker to get the ball.

The best chance of the game came when Sharp did well to rob Onouha and was in on goal. Smithies chose to sprint from his line and the Blades skipper saw the chance to try and chip him but got it horribly wrong and skewed it well wide. It was a really good chance to take the lead.

Rangers had begun well but were now very much on the defensive and United were pinning them back. Sharp crossed and it was not far off Clarke. They won another corner and from it the opening goal came. Duffy took it and Clarke did well to flick on at the near post and STEARMAN slid in and clinically converted at the back post giving Smithies no chance. It was sloppy marking but Clarke had been determined to make it his and in doing so set up a rare goal from a corner; an area where the Blades have been quite wasteful at times this season.

QPR had not really offered much but from a corner Blackman did not quite get there and the ball was headed goalward by Washington but Basham nodded away. The keeper then had the home fans hearts in their mouth as he dribbled round the same man who closed him down before clearing.

United finished the half strong with Evans shooting wide and then twice Clarke getting wide and sending balls across that just evaded Sharp.

The second half saw a sloppy start and poor defending from the home side saw the ball moved across the box without a challenge and Freeman’s low shot was saved well by Blackman who also helped deny Washington on the rebound. United were soon back on the front foot again and they were made it 2-0 after a neat move.

Duffy had been off his game but played a lovely ball down the channel and Sharp pulled it back. The ball just evaded Clarke but the home team had players queueing up and Lundstram was able to apply the final touch by side footing home at the back post. It was a simple goal in its execution and finish but seemed to have put the game away. For the next stage of the game United had control and Rangers were looking very sloppy at the back. A cross from Baldock saw Onouha and Baptiste get in a horrible mess and they nearly conceded an own goal but just about did enough to put behind for a corner, with Clarke so close to converting. Stevens and Baldock were playing higher up and the defence were first to the ball.

United had been comfortable but suddenly out of nothing and Rangers reduced the arrears. Lundstram was sloppy in possession and FREEMAN broke away. Evans could have fouled him and stopped the play but let him run and run and by the time the defence came out to challenge he had already lined up a shot and from the edge of the box curled beyond Blackman and it was 2-1. It was a good goal but too easy.

Suddenly it was game on and United from being in a position of complete control started to panic. Smyth came on for Baptiste and the home side started to panic now. They gave the ball away twice soon after and then sat off the quick, nimble QPR midfielders who were now attacking the Blades defence. A half chance came soon after but United cleared before at the other end a mis hit Sharp cross was nearly fumbled into his own net by Smithies.

Washington had a decent chance but was blocked whilst Smith’s height was causing problems. However, it was Freeman’s running that was causing the most problems and United now were giving up territory and the ball. Wilder made two changes with Donaldson and Leonard coming on for Sharp and Duffy in an attempt to stiffen up the middle of the field and give the Blades an outlet. Indeed, at this stage the midfield looked tired and were struggling to cope with some nimble runners from the visitors who now looked more likely to add to the scoring.

The game became scrappy which helped the Blades somewhat although United now were struggling to keep the ball or stem the tide. Despite this Rangers had created little despite having much of the ball. Osayi Samuel came on for Washington as the game entered the last 10 minutes. Lafferty came on for Lundstram and then Smith had a flicked header Blackman had to save. Rangers won a few set plays and Evans was booked for a drag back as the game entered the final few minutes. Smith had a good chance but headed straight at Blackman after a cross from the left-hand side. An additional five minutes of time were to be played and United were able to use up much of this time with good work from Donaldson and Baldock and then the sub Leonard who burst through and won a corner. Rangers punted one final ball forward but Clarke ran down his defender brilliantly to win a throw and this was enough to get United over the line. It was not pretty but a crucial win.

United – Once again we have played much better and won. Countless games at home (Villa, Bristol, Norwich etc) and a few away have seen us more fluent but today despite only doing it for spells of the game, we got the win. We began sloppily and they had a chance early on but gradually came out and Clarke looked more a threat than he has been. We then had most of the decent play and chances first half but were not brilliant and at times still gave it away. Still, Clarke and Sharp had good chances and then the goal came. After this we survived a scare early in the second half but then got the second and could have had another. It seemed they had gone but a goal out of nothing and it was all change. We then could not get hold of the ball, barely made a challenge and they won most loose things and carried the ball on.

You sensed they may snatch a draw but Wilder did change things and Leonard helped matters getting stuck in and breaking things up a bit. The game became disjointed and sort of ebbed away which was fine. Still Smith had a good late chance and you were never convinced we were going to see them off. The defence did well today but I felt got no protection from the midfield who did well first half but after they scored, regressed badly and sat off and started to tire. We then struggled to keep up with some of their more mobile players from this area. We were hanging on a bit and they were not a good side at all. We can and will play much better and it was just about getting over the line. It showed how much we miss Fleck (and Coutts). Duffy was really poor tonight but Clarke was back to his standards of pre-Christmas and worked really hard. Sharp did ok and put a shift in too. I am not sure we had the cohesion with and without the ball we have had but we scrapped out the win. We now are back in the mix and with players coming back can go to a struggling Hull side and have a real go Friday night.

QPR – First half they started ok but then we started to take control and they made mistakes and struggled and a few unforced errors at the back and we could have led. We finally got a goal and then when the second went in (after they missed a decent chance); it seemed curtains. We could have got another and they looked to have gone. The goal gave them a big lift and then they had a real go and got bodies forward. Over the game 2-1 was about right and they left it way too late to have a proper go at us but they did not cave in. I am not sure they will finish much higher than where they are and rely on their home form a lot to get points. They have done well at Loftus Road and beat some decent sides but struggle on the road. I was chatting to a Rangers fan pre-game and it seems Holloway is not flavour of the month. He said he is tactically inept and has no idea who his best team is or formation. He wants him out but realises without any funds they kind of rely on a motivator like him to get the maximum out of a squad that has a few carryovers from the Premier League a few years ago but is essentially full of middling Championship players and current position and final position probably reflects this.

Opposition Man of the Match: Freeman was the main threat. Always liked him at Bristol City and Stevenage before that and has lost a lot of timber. Can carry the ball and dribble with it and a decent shot. Ironically, he was quite first half but we struggled to stop him second half and he scored a really good goal. Luongo is another decent ball player. Both are great when attacking but struggle to do the defensive stuff. Smith has always been a handful but we played him quite well tonight but he still had a good chance.

Opposition Weak link: The defence was a bit all over the place at times. Onouha and Baptiste have both played in the Premier League but both looked very erratic at times. I also thought the keeper did not exude confidence and I quite liked him when he was at Huddersfield. Washington was quiet tonight.

Blackman 7/10 – For the most part decent. He did miss one cross or sort of flapped at it first half and then his dribble left me worried but his handling overall was good and against another giant in Smith made sure he got stuff either by taking or punching away. He made one very good low save down to his left and got up to save again. Not sure he had much chance on the goal - a low shot.

Baldock 7/10 – Decent again in overall play showing pace, athleticism and underrated strength. He did well when attacking although fired badly off target. Put one cross over second half that was a bit more pace would have led to Clarke scoring. At the end he did give his man a bit too much time and he crossed a few times but then he did help see him off at the death.

Stevens 7/10 – Played ok tonight. Put in a good cross that just missed everyone and then one for Lundstram/Clarke that nearly led to a goal. He was a bit slow to react to a few things but last few weeks has got back to standards of earlier in the season.

Basham 7.5/10 – Thought he was very good tonight. Sure a few slices or miskicks but he stuck to his task, got his foot in and made some good tackles and interceptions. Really honest performance. Had one run forward second half where he pirouetted around and then fed Clarke. Not sure he knew what he was doing! Really whole-hearted performance.

O’Connell 7.5/10 – Solid again. He made some good blocks and covered around the back well. Also came forward a few times and nearly got us in with through balls. Playing well (apart from error v Leeds) last 3 or 4 games and he like Stevens has got back to standards of earlier in the season.

Stearman 7.5/10 – Played well again. Scored a goal, used it well when he had it and won a lot of headers. An intelligent defender who just does the basics well and can move across deck fairly well. A lot still call for Jake Wright but defence has been fine recent times and he has been one of most consistent players post Xmas.

Evans 6/10 – Mixed performance. First half did well and was able to get on it and move it on. Broke up play and just kept it simple. Had a few efforts at goal too and pulled one wide when he should have done better. After they scored he struggled and he let Freeman get away and should have brought him down but did not and it was fatal. He did bring him down next time he ran away and got booked! The final stages I felt he tired quite badly and I felt we did not close them down and lacked mobility/legs and cover. Him and Lundstram tried too many long balls and just stopped doing the basics. Both midfielders for big lads are not great at tackling.

Lundstram 6/10 – As above. Played ok in spells with some decent balls and then scored the goal (his third which is as many as Coutts, Fleck and Duffy combined for all we laud those three) and shows he can get forward and finish. Nearly scored another first half. He still tried too many long balls and will not carry it 10-15 yards when there is grass to run into. Tried a daft flick that led to their goal and then he was struggling to get close to their quick runners and we were too far off them ad was really struggling before he went off. Not sure how he got man of the match. He has to do it for 90 minutes not in spells. Another big lad that gets brushed aside too easy also.

Duffy 5/10 – Poor as he has been this season. He gave the ball away constantly, tried to do too much and was just not at it. He made poor choices and got crowded out. Never hid and kept going and then played a nice ball in the lead up the second. Overall though he will have been disappointed with his performance. Just not his night.

Clarke 7.5/10 – Much, much better. Started slow but grew into the game. He started to chase and harry and ran the channels really well. Put in two or three great balls and was lively. His touch was better and he set up the first goal as he showed he was determined to get in front of his man. Second half he continued to show a great work ethic and a few times unlucky not to get in and score. He summed up his work ethic near the end when he chased two defenders down. Still gets caught offside too much but tonight he was good.

Sharp 7/10 – He worked hard but maybe spent too much time looking for fouls and hit the deck 5 or 6 times first half. He did try and held it up when he could. Missed a good chance after robbing his man with good tenacity and not like him to miss so badly on a one on one. Made the second with a good run and pull back. Came off for Donaldson as we looked for a runner up top and fresh legs. Been much better last few games and sure these two will remain as the front two.

Subs:

Leonard – Thought he did well when he came on and gave us something we needed; some bite. He gave away a few fouls but at least got close to some of their players. He had a few decent tackles and then nearly got in to score as he ran at the defence and got a corner as his shot was blocked. An encouraging cameo after a subpar start in other games.

Donaldson – Not great for the most part. Ran offside, dribbled it out of play and the ball kept bounding off him. He did help us run down the clock with some good ball retention right at the end down the right and the left-hand side. Does seem a better player away from home.

Lafferty – Came on for final stages and got his foot in a few times as we helped see out the extra time.

Manager: Wilder 7.5/10 – It was a win and as Wilder himself said; we have had the plaudits after we have lost some games so a scrappy win is fine. We did ok but not superb for the first hour but still looked to be cruising but then gave them a lifeline and then we hung on a bit. Rangers were not a great side and should have been put away but three points is all that matter and we are right back in the mix again. I felt we saw how much we miss our key midfielders and today we saw a big drop off on this area in terms of mobility and ball retention. Wilder will look to use Brooks/Holmes from the bench this Friday and Duffy will not play as bad. Be pleased Clarke was back to his old self. We now have 52 points and are officially safe!

Officials – Oliver Langford. A bit of a nothing game. One booking, rightly so for Evans for pulling Freeman back. He should have done it on his goal! Other than this not sure there were many bad tackles although a horrible late smash on Lafferty at the end somehow escaped censure. Outside of this he missed a couple both ways and Sharp had a decent-ish call for a pen when the player went through the back of him (gave a foul on O’Connell for the same tackle moments later!) but not sure he got much wrong that affected the game really. Also, not sure where he got 5 minutes from really – there was one clash of heads and a few subs/goals but 5 minutes! We did not timewaste like many clubs have this season other than Blackman on one goal kick.

Crowd – 25,339 and maybe 300 tops from QPR! It was quiet-ish tonight and a little flat really but after some big games and opponents at Lane inevitable a cold February Tuesday night would not see much of an atmosphere. Was a bit of a subdued game really and one of the poorer ones this season so you could understand the lack of noise to some degree. Some anxiety at the end but that was as much desperation for United to get over the line I suppose.

Fine margins on your ratings, but I think alot of it depends where you sit in the ground.

I thought Blackman pulled off some great saves, the last one where his height was a factor, it would have sailed over the heads of our other keepers.

Lundstram steamed in for the second goal. Evans was ok and Leonard gave his best performance (for me) as he came on with some aggression when we were being bullied.

Like I always say, I will take 3 points any way we can.

grateful for the insight as ever

football can be a strange mistress, as wigans win over a totally dominating man city showed
Wilder has got in a much tougher game hardened bunch in this seasons window and its now they are getting us over the line when its going to count , getting 3 points rather than 1 as they acclimatise to our way of playing

Wsolek was danger man for Qpr ,Wilder took Duffy off and put Lundstram on the left as Stevens couldn't handle him ,and then made a very good sub with Lafferty which put and to the problem. they woul have scored if he hadn't done that. Disagree with the marks for Leon who I thought was poor ,Evans and Blackman should have had better marks. But like grappler says it depends on where you sit I suppose.

Cheers Deadbat, that final half an hour or so was torture, glad we saw it out. Pre-Wilder you just know we'd have conceded a 2nd.

I really enjoyed the game. I thought QPR have some useful players played some good football. We did well to win that game.

Leon poor? Really? Best he has played for ages. Never stopped running. Put some good balls in and held it up.

Blackman played well but missed a fee crosses which is rare for him. First half Bash got him out of jail heading off line.

Cant agree with people rating Lundstram and Evans so highly. They were mixed on and off the ball first hour but after they scored we really poor and we had no control of midfield at all with no pressure on the ball whatsoever. They (include Duffy in that) offered defence no protection at all. We were stood off and Freeman and Luongo had the run of the park. We got completely overran and it only got better after Leonard came on.

Totally agree Deadbat, thought Leon was nearly back to his best last night, he just needs a goal now to give him his confidence back.
On Lundstrum how the hell he got MOTM I was bemused, he still gives it away and his tracking back is dreadful trotting back as his man stormed forward, without his goal would have been a 5 from me. No doubt Fleck will be straight back in for Friday, and hopefully Duffy more back to himself as he did have a bit of a mare last night as well which with Lundstrum’s lack of steel contributed to us losing the midfield battle second half.

Their keeper was there for a torrid time and we never really bothered him as we should've, Onuoha looked good didn't give Clarke much change when they went head to head.

Have to I struggle with Sitter's (who I usually concur with) assessment of Leon?
Deadbats pretty much on mark tonight and had it not been for his goal I reckon lundstrum would be marked lower.
He struggles in any other role than the sitter. His defensive qualities are poor at this level and for such a big lad his presence is lacking and his work in the air is shite.
Lafferty shored up the left side much better after he came on for Lunny who was floundering at times defensively.

For me Leon had one of his better games, okay, I know the goals aren't coming but he worked his socks off, particularly noticeable late on when QPR were on top....he closed a couple of their defenders down in their own half and they lumped it forward straight through to Blackman.

Sitting on the Kop,so it was clearer to me first half, Stearman was having an excellent game and has really become the player Wilder knew he was signing. Comfortable on the ball, distributes well & has a great reading of the game. With himself & JOC we have been long overdue quality CB's at The Lane. Bash I really can't make my mind up about. Gets in some terrific interceptions but sometimes looks to dither on the ball and not look wholly comfortable. That said, when he loses it and the opposition break against us he always seems to be the one who's got back to make a last ditch tackle.

Credit QPR, they got in our faces from the first minute and competed very well. After the goal we did appear to sit back and invite them on when our midfield should have been getter tighter, and doing what they did to us, further up the pitch.
Would loved to have seen Brooks tonight and if we'd got a third when we were on top at the start of the second half I'm sure we would have done. The subs CW made were the right call at the right time and I don't think Brooks' defensive work would have been enough.
That said, in hindsight Brooks instead of Donaldson might have been a better change.
Really pleased with an at times, scruffy but hard fought win. As we all know, we've played better this season and come away with nothing.

Thanks Deadbat, always enjoy reading your take on the games.

As others have said, I thought Clarke was excellent and up there with his best performances of the season. He caused so many problems down the left side of their defence - thought his movement and timing of his runs was outstanding and he put in some dangerous crosses.

You can also throw in the assist for the goal but I think one thing that goes underappreciated with Clarke is how valuable he is defensively. From set-pieces we often have him as a floating defender at the front post with a brief of just getting it away - noticed this last night when he was the one blocking a shot from a QPR corner in the first half. It's not just set-pieces either though - he frequently drops back to cover attackers.

Great performance all round from him, even though he was actually much less involved in terms of shots/chances for himself than he normally is.

Interesting that the consesus is that Duffy had a poor game when he created both goals. That said the QPR midfield did very well to close him down.

I agree with Sitwell about the Lafferty sub, more important than it is given credit for I think. Can't agree about Clarke though, he was good throughout and tremendous at the end.

Agree totally on your post here. I want to see Leonard before Lundstram in the pecking order.

Cheers Deadbat. Good report and though I'd give all the players half a point more perhaps, the relativities are as I see them.

Thought the game changed before their goal, rather when we went two up we got a bit showy and ambitious. I said after an hour that Evans was playing a blinder and suddenly he was exposed time and again as he lacked support alongside him by Lundstram who seemed to go missing defensively. Our deeper midfield was underpopulated all of a sudden and QPR mad the most of it. First half I thought the Evans/ Lundstram partnership looked really strong and solid.

Wilder seems to struggle with substitutions and I though he was 10/15 minutes too late last night. Maybe he was protecting Brooks from a resolute and physical QPR team who took no prisoners.

I thought the referee was looking to play the game with robust contact allowed both ways and I though that suited a physical away side. No way was the ref going to give a penalty or indeed anything to Sharp who was fouled time and again. Agree with the o.p. that Sharp was too obviously looking for the fouls sometimes but that doesn't mean none of them are fouls and it was a cert penalty. Ref 6/10 though at least he was consistently missing things both ways but not good enough for a fair game played to the rules.

Agree that Clarke was full value but then again I think he has been for weeks, even in this lean goals-coring spell. Wilder clearly thinks so too.

Stevens looks more optimistic thankfully. Baldock is always busy and energetic but I wish he was more composed around the penalty area. Duffy was swarmed by the opposition all game and has too much personal responsibility to create telling moves for us to be able to afford to have him marked out of the game. That's when we should be able to look to Stevens and Baldock to create more.

Thought the crowd were over-anxious. Supporters should help the team to play through difficult periods in the game and not add to the anxiety. We are playing in the Championship with most of our players still adjusting to that level. We will have spells when we have to ride out pressure from the opposition, they are not mugs; QPR are established at this level and not long ago in the Prem. I thought our crowd was quiet until we went 2 up and then moaned and moaned for the last 25 minutes. Wilder deserves better than that.

Thought Basham and Stevens were weak once again - 6 at best, MoM for me was Evans the bloke was everywhere - great signing. Allowing Lundstrum to do all the creativity. Duffy was weak but that was to do with QPR closing him down as our many creative threat - so maybe their strategy of 3 men on Duffy frustrating him but it releases Lundstrum that bit more space to keep us going. If Fleck, Duffy and Coutts work as they retain the ball more, Evans, Lundstrum and Duffy create more. We're in need of some pace in the team though. Our perpetual high energy style has been matched so the edge that a sprint merchant would give would be nice.

The Blades made it two home league wins on the bounce as they followed up the win against Leeds with another 2-1 win against QPR. This was a different kind of game to many that we have seen previously at the Lane. Both James Wilson and Ricky Holmes missed out through injury but David Brooks was back amongst the substitutes. QPR who had won at the weekend; started with Matt Smith and Connor Washington up top and had former Blade loanee Alex Baptiste in their rear-guard.

The Blades took time to settle but slowly started to come into the game with Clarke looking livelier than he had for some time.

Any sharks talking football. Of course not!

You are right in what you say about Duffy. I wonder if we judge him now by higher standards than everyone else. I came away thinking he had had a stinker, and a lot of what he did failed to work. But not only was he instrumental in both goals, if you look at the highlights, just about every one of our main threatening attacks came through him - the attacks down the left early on, the Sharp 'penalty', 2 dangerous attacks down the right that almost produced goals in the second half... For someone who had a bad game, he created a lot.

Tufty says he was going to bring DRB on but the lad had a back spasm.

There’s a nonsense gaining ground that Tufty isn’t very good at substitutions. Soon he’ll be tactically inept and lose the dressing-room, no doubt.

Leon was immense - way more than half a point above puffing Billy , who had to go off as usual , lacking the fitness to play 90 minutes , despite doing less than half the running of his strike partner.
Leon was one of the main reasons we prevented them from equalising , really defending from the front when we were under the cosh.
Billy needs to lose some weight or get an oxygen tank or something

Disagree. Very fit and put a real shift in.
