It was back to winning ways at the Lane as the Blades somehow took three points from a game that the visitors dominated for much of the contest. Lowly Portsmouth, just like Hull, took the game to United and created a number of opportunities throughout the game but now have a record where they have not won at Bramall Lane since November 1955, 25 contests in all. United made them pay with goals from Hamer and substitute Rak Sakyi being enough to take three points, despite Ogilvie equalising for Pompey in the first half. The home side made were second best throughout though and it was worrying how easily the South Coast side breached their defence with only poor finishing and good goalkeeping stopping them from being out of sight, long before Brewster laid on the winner for fellow sub Rak Sakyi. Wilder rightly remarked that United had ‘got away with one’ at the end but will know if performances do not improve, it will be difficult for the Blades to remain in the top two as the race for automatic promotion starts to enter the final part of the season.

Wilder made two changes with Campbell and Hamer back in for Brewster and O’Hare. Portsmouth named two new signings Aouchiche and Gordon on the bench but named the same eleven that held Burnley a week ago with former Blades pre-season trialist Andre Dozzell starting in midfield.

The visitors started strongly and were winning most of the loose stuff and in turn looking dangerous going forward with Lang and Bishop causing the United defence problems with their mobility and pressing. They won an early free kick but Lang’s effort hit the wall before Bishop was in but Cooper had to deny him. The visitors continued to dominate as United could not get any kind of foothold in the game. Murphy was causing Clarke all sorts of problems and his low cross was flicked goalwards by Bishop but Ahmedhodzic made the block. United started to see more of the ball but the build up lacked pace or intensity and saw the ball moved between defence and attack but rarely did the home side look like progressing the ball into the final third. Only Hamer tried to make forward passes happen but his radar was off on two occasions.

There was a lovely tribute to Harvey Willgoose on 15 minutes, as a flag was moved around the Kop and the referee was able to stop the game to allow the players and coaching staff to join the fans and paying their respects. Once the game restarted, United did win a few corners, but it continued to be Pompey who looked more dangerous. Murphy again got the better of Clarke but his cross was cleared before another Murphy cross was somehow put over by Lang from almost on the line. It was an absolute sitter and Pompey were made to pay on 24 minutes. Brereton Diaz moved the ball on and found HAMER, who cut inside and the Pompey defence did not get close enough to him and the midfielder curled a lovely effort into the far corner. It had come completely against the run of play, so you could have no complaints when Pompey responded almost immediately. Once again it came down the Pompey left. This time Brereton Diaz, along with Clarke, failed to spot the two on one and Murphy got down the flank and sent a perfect cross for OGILVIE to get in front of the sleeping Ahmedhodzic to turn the ball home at the near post.

Pompey wanted more and won another free kick as Souza and Choudhury struggled to win the 50-50 balls and the quicker and hungrier opponents swarmed all over the Blades. The effort came in from Ritchie but was straight at Cooper. Murphy then came inside and hit a dipping effort which thudded off the bar. Pompey had created so many chances for a side that were struggling at the wrong end of the table and missed another sitter when Murphy once again skinned the hapless Clarke, before sending over a cross that Ogilvie skied, again almost from the goal line. It was an incredible miss but worryingly for United, not the first easy chance that should have been finished. United had created next to nothing outside of the goal but Clarke did have a header pushed behind before half time.

After he interval, fans would have hoped Wilder would have looked at the shape where we were getting run through down both sides, losing all the ball in the middle and not holding it at the top of the field and made changes to personnel or the system. However, the side came out with the same players and seemingly same lack of idea how to get any control of the game. For the first 15 minutes after the break, United could not even get out of their own half as Pompey somehow dominated even more! Pompey had the ball in the net as Bishop finished a Murphy free kick but was adjudged to be offside. Murphy then got in and Cooper had to make the save before more dithering from Clarke saw the ball played inside and was blocked. Murphy had another effort tipped over.

The remarkably one-sided nature of the game was clear to all to see as United tactics remained unclear. However, Pompey continued to win most of the loose stuff with the two centre halves for the Blades being dominated aerially and all the first and second balls landing with a blue shirt. Wilder had seen enough and made a triple change with Rak Sakyi, Brewster and McCallum on for Campbell, Choudhury and Burrows. United finally mounted an attack after over 15 minutes of the second half but Clarke’s driven effort went away from the far post.

The chances continued though for the visitors. Ahmedhodzic and Clarke made errors that saw Pompey retrieve balls and get in and from one such passage of play, Murphy’s smart overhead kick put Bishop in but he fired over with the goal at his mercy. Bishop then had a shot blocked from Robinson. Aouchiche came on for Ritchie on 72 minutes.

The visitors will have wondered how they had not been out of sight but their finishing had lacked the clinical edge that was required and were made to pay when out of nowhere, the Blades broke to take the lead. Brewster had been lively since he entered the field and he did well down the left and sent over a superb cross that RAK SAKYI finished smartly at the far post in front of the Kop end. The celebrations seemed to be as much in relief as delight and after this the game became more open as Pompey were now chasing. United broke but Cannon selfishly went alone and fired badly over with players over.

Peck and Brewster had given United some energy and the former was excellent as twice he came out with the ball and drove forward. However, the midfielder was booked as a melee ensued after his tackle, where he won the ball was judged to be over zealous. Matthews and Gordon replaced Shaughnessy and Dozzell and Holding came on for Cannon as the game entered the final 10 minutes. Clarke and Ahmedhodzic were also booked with the loanee wildly bringing down Murphy and the Bosnian carded after another grapple followed by a complaint lodged to the referee, that the official judged was over aggressive. Pompey sent the free kick in but United were able to clear but it was all a bit desperate stuff with the game now stretched. United had 5 at the back with Holding in the centre and the defender nearly made a mess of a back pass that Cooper had to retrieve.

The game entered 5 extra minutes and Pompey continued to knock the ball forward in a hope of getting the point, that would have been the least they deserved but the Blades cleared the ball to stop any further chances and the last opportunity came for the home side. With Portsmouth men forward, United broke and Brewster was slipped in. The striker took a touch and went one on one on Schmid but his effort smashed against the bar and rebounded back into play. However, the visitors could not get the ball into the Blades box and the referee brought an end to proceedings. Most of the Pompey players slumped to the floor as their fans gave them a rapturous ovation for their efforts, despite the loss whilst the Blades players clapped their fans, who were leaving the ground wondering how they had taken all three points from a game they had been second best throughout.

United – I was more balanced after the Derby game, where we were poor but scraped the win against a struggling side that made it a bit of a battle. The Hull game we were not awful but got done on the sucker punch a few times but struggled to create much at all and worryingly the shape, new signings and way we were playing looked a bit of a mess. Now, for the third game, I am not sure I can keep making excuses (there are some in the sense that there are new players finding their feet I suppose). We are not playing well at all. In fact, we have been poor for some time. It is not one or two games but outside Norwich, we have not been convincing in a game for a long time really. We have won so many games where we were second best and the likes of Hull, Plymouth, Swansea and now Portsmouth sadly have been much better than us for large parts of games. These teams have shown more desire in the battle and been more aggressive than us. The reason we have won games is teams have missed lots of chances and we have been quite ruthless and taken ours. We are second and are still right in the automatic promotion race but look a long way off a side that should go up. I am calling it as I see it. I think anyone watching as Josh Murphy alluded to post game, would have said Pompey were the side going for promotion today and we looked like a side struggling to stay up. We have some talented players but it is all a bit of a mess. Wilder has done a remarkable job to get us to second and deserves so much credit but I worry that January oddly with all the players being thrown in (we had to bring in reinforcements of course) seems to have made us even worse in terms of knowing how we are trying to play. Still to counter that, we were not playing great before we brought these signings in. I disagree with Wilder when he says it is not about tactics. I do agree we were second to the ball, slow in reacting, lost headers, battles and races and all those other mantras he often talks about. However, we had not real shape, no plan how to progress the ball up the field and when pressed panicked. We looked lost attacking wise but did not even get to these areas to try and have many dangerous spells of play. It was slow and clueless for the most part.

Out of possession, we had two static midfielders who did not protect the defence but did not like play and are clearly two alike. Neither can carry the ball or create and thus we have a big gap. Brereton Diaz and Cannon look slow, unfit and show no movement and we have no pace in the side at all with the line up that started. There was only Hamer who looked to try and create and yes it did not always work but he tried to go forward. The subs did help and Brewster and Peck improved us but we were lucky to still be in the game. Pompey missed two open goals, had at least 4 or 5 other clear chances and hit the bar. If it had been 1-4 at half time, you could not have grumbled and by the hour mark could have been 1-6 or 1-7. It sounds made but they literally went through us look knife through butter. The two centre halves are not physically strong enough. Everyone says what a hard man Robinson is and how he gets stuck in but he loses headers and battles routinely and comes out second. Anel is soft as…you know the rest. He has played well this season but those two were the centre back that were conceding 5’s and 6’s last season – yes it is the level below but they are not good enough as a pairing and teams bully us. Holding does not seem to be the right sort of imposing centre back to help us either? Clarke did well last week but today was diabolical and was given the run around. Somehow we have ended up signing someone who does the things we needed to do (stop crosses, stop his winger and get close to his man) worse than the lad we took out- who was not doing these things!

It was a mess really from a tactical, shape, plan of attack and formation perspective but I do agree with Wilder that even with those flaws, we have to show desire and win headers, loose balls but were so far off it today. I do believe a clearer shape and tactics may then give us more chance of having more of the ball and getting it forward quicker and having more impactful possession.

Peck and Brewster were the two that galvanised us and for the last 20 minutes the game was more even but for the first 70; it was as one sided a game as you could see. Pompey will not believe they did not score at last 4 or 5 goals. I suppose that is football and you have to take your chances and we took ours and sometimes why some teams are nearer the top or bottom. However, this was not like games we have had for a good portion of the season where it’s been tight and we have just shown a bit of quality and/or defended well. We got battered today and not sure anyone can say we did not. Clarke had a header and Cannon had that break – we then had the Brewster one right at the end but they created at least double figure chances in comparison.

It does sound very doom and gloom sadly. We did win the game and maybe we will respond in the week. My bigger worry, is that this was not really a game in isolation. It was in terms of how badly we played and were dominated but we have been poor for some time and not really any clear plan how we are trying to win games and control games. It is just like he is sending a load of players out and with a fair few new ones too and just throwing them into positions – that are not working and not allowing us to get the best out of them. He has spent a fair bit of money and the owners has backed him so hope he can get the best out of the likes of Clarke, Choudhury, Brereton Diaz and Cannon but as I mentioned before, we had some of the issues even before these arrived too. I do wonder whether he needs to look at playing a 5 – to protect the weakness at the back. Maybe Choudhury as part of a 5 with Holding and Anel? Then Peck/Davies with Souza and Hamer in front. I would play Brereton Diaz on the right personally but at the moment looks way off it and would not start him – at least Rak Sakyi gives us pace and an outlet. Cannon must earn the shirt and has not done that so far. It would be Campbell or Moore – but I worry Wilder is stubborn and won’t drop his big money buy. Even his previous big money flop (not saying Cannon is a flop as early but worrying how poor he looks) Brewster has shown more. I hope we see a response Boro game. It we continue to play like we are doing, we are not going to keep getting away with it and they will take chances with the forwards they have brought in. Be interesting to see the response of the manager and players. We have two tough games (Luton been awful but still have some decent players and not an easy game – look at Pompey/Hull against us) and hope we can get 4-6 points and stay with the top two but with Leeds on the horizon (imagine them with the chances Pompey created?) we have to find a plan and some form if we are serious about going up automatically.

For all that, we are second and won the game and you have to step back sometimes and that is ultimately what football is about but I left the Lane quite flat yesterday despite us winning and that was an odd feeling as normally you come away smiling after a win and positive.

Ratings:

Cooper 7.5/10 – Not sure he made any absolutely wonderful saves but he made several good (some expected) to keep us in the game. He was badly exposed as they came through us and down the sides time after time. The goal I will say he was a bit slow to react maybe on the near post but maybe that is harsh. Still, outside of this he was kept very busy and our best starter by some distance. Since Souttar was injured, we have now looked easy to get through and look a soft touch again (like last season).

Clarke 2/10 – I had been very critical of Gilchrist and felt we needed to upgrade here. Clarke did ok at Derby, but did not face any real threat. Today, he had a good winger against him and to say he struggled big time was an understatement. From the off Pompey targeted our right side and he was given a pretty good going over from start to finish. He had one header saved and one other shot but defensively he was abject. Did not get close to his man, was positionally miles off and got beat one on one constantly. Shocking tackle for a booking and he looked painfully slow all game. Did not get help from BBD though but even taking that into account he has to be able to get close to his man. On this evidence looks an even worse one on one defender than Gilchrist. We just needed a steady eddy here but worryingly he seems a long way from that.

Burrows 4/10 – His form has dropped off quite a bit and whilst Clarke will get the lions share of attention for his defensive work- or lack of it, Burrows was poor again. He too, gave his man too much time and was not able to stop crosses coming in. His touch and passing was off again and he also did not offer anything going forward – we never got forward to be fair as it was slow and clueless for 70 minutes. Taken off and we did improve when McCallum gave us some energy at least.

Ahmedhodzic 3/10 – Thought his performance was akin to that was saw last season where he looked soft, weak and slow. He gave away so many fouls and Bishop completely bullied him. It’s not like Bishop is a physical specimen either. We just struggle so much with high balls and balls coming into forwards and do not impose ourselves. He was half asleep on the goal as he did not get across but this theme continued as he made so many errors or did not get to the ball first as they kept playing the ball into the front two and playing off them. Him and Robinson is not a pairing that worked- amazed we are considering finishing the season with them as a two – after what happened last season.

Robinson 4/10 – He was not much better than the above as he too, gave away too many fouls, was not able to impose himself and on the ball took too many touches to move it forward. He was probably the best of the backline and he too had a bad game where a struggling side seemed almost camped in our half. He and Anel were not helped by the full backs and the so-called defensive pivot in front.

Souza 4/10 –I may get criticised for this rating but he looks miles off the player earlier in the season as he is finding his way back to fitness. Will take him some time but the Souza who controlled and dominated midfield, we have not seen at Derby or in this game. He was not able to get to the ball first and rarely seemed to be on the ball for much of the game. It just sort of passed him by. He did get better when Peck came on as his role was clearer.

Choudhury 3/10 – As others have said, not sure why we signed him to play a role that Souza already plays. If Souza was not available, fair enough, but now we have both? They will not carry the ball or move it forward but then at least you have a nice defensive base you would think? Well not at all today as quicker, more determined players won all the loose balls and ran around these two who were statuesque. We did not really have a midfield for 65-70 mins as a team near the bottom completely controlled things and swarmed all over us. We lost so many of the first and second balls. The players looked so passive in this area of the field. He, like Clarke, did well at Derby but today looked lost. Wonder if he would be better as a right back or in a three at the back (particularly at home).

Hamer 6.5/10 – Our best outfield starter in the sense he got on the ball and tried to move it forwards. His radar and passes were off as he overhit a few but at least he was trying things and looked like the only one who may create. His goal was simple in its execution but he made it look easy. He got lost in the general malaise of poor play throughout the side and struggled to get on the ball as much as the game went on but we saw a few moments near the end as the game opened up. Our most creative player by some distance. At least he did not get booked -although close on a few occasions with some harsh/daft fouls!

Campbell 4/10 – Not really in the game and not sure where he was meant to be playing -at first thought it was a two but then seemed to be just off Cannon? He had a few bits of link play around the box as we tried to work moments with Hamer feeding him but was quiet. Still felt he was looking the better of the two and would have left him on instead of Cannon.

Cannon 3/10 – I have to say I have been disappointed with how little he is offering. Granted the team are a bit of a muddle in terms of how we are playing, set up and trying to feed the strikers and maybe he has had little service but he still needs to offer something/do more? He lacks movement, lacks pace and loses the aerial stuff. He does not hold it up but does not make runs either. He looks physically weak too. He barely seems to touch the ball in games and that is worry for a side that is not creating much, does not get crosses in or play though the middle. He had that one chance but smashed it over when he should have passed. Wilder criticised the fans who have questioned him – granted early but for a new player who has cost much – I want someone to put more effort in (not as simple as running around) and show for the ball, try and link. Off the ball he is not pressing either. To say I have been distinctly underwhelmed is an understatement. I would put Campbell, Moore and even Brewster ahead of him on what I have seen. He surely has to earn the shirt – he is not offering anything but worry Wilder will not drop him as then he feels he looks silly and the owners will question why we bought him? He did this with Brewster a few years ago. Does not look like coming even close to scoring a goal. 3 games and he has had one tame shot and one awful effort over the bar – did make the goal of course last week which is the only thing he has done in three games.

Brereton Diaz 2/10 – Looks out of shape, unfit and his touch has been awful – he looks miles off even being a Championship starter on his current conditioning and his confidence (despite scoring last week seem rock bottom – maybe the Southampton fans were right). He was so sluggish, exemplified in the booking when he swiped at his man. Like Cannon, been really slow to get going and not seen the impact (yes he did score a crucial winner to counter that) we would have hoped. Maybe Wilder hopes he will play him into game shape but he looks like a player that has barely played any football for 9 months – that is the case. The Pompey fans were mocking his performance and thought that might get him going but he got worse. Gave Clarke no help the other way on the goal and for much of the game.

Subs -

Peck 7.5/10 – Our best player and only played 30 minutes. He came on, got stuck in, won the ball and made things happen. He drove with it but was always looking to go forward. Many of our attacking moves came from him getting his foot in and sending us the other way. Thought he was going to get sent off after the tackle where he did win the ball but you worry when there is a melee and reaction. He was right to be rested as played a lot but today showed more than any of the other midfielders (maybe Hamer apart) and should be back in on Wednesday. I do not think Wilder will do it though as he is stubborn and will persist with Choudhury.

Brewster 7.5/10 – Like Peck, made a big impact when he came on. He got on the ball, showed energy and had some good forward runs. He made the goal with a superb cross and had a few other pieces of positive play. On the chance at the end, you would hope he would show a bit of subtlety but again seems to have one way of shooting – hit it as hard as he can! He has to finish chances like that really but suppose it did not matter in the end. To be fair showing some desire to want to make an impact and worrying he is looking more up for it/lively than the forward signings that have come on.

Rak Sayki 6.5/10 – He scored the winner and did well, to get in the right place and finish. He read the cross and finished. Outside of this a few runs and won a corner but again not sure we saw an end product always but he gave us something different and at least saw them have to worry about us attacking down this side. Expect he will start the next game.

McCallum 6.5/10 – He gave us some energy and at least got his foot in, won a few headers and thought he used the ball well. He came away from challenges with the ball a fair bit, which many of the other players had not before this. Improved things down this side definitely.

Holding – Came on and played a blind back pass that nearly caused us issues. He went into a three. Not as big as I thought he was? Worry, like the others we have signed, he is not what we needed – we needed a big tall, dominant head it away type. Is he that? I am not sure. I would still bring him in for Robinson personally.

Manager: Wilder 3/10 – Would be lower if not for the subs that helped massively turn the game around and of course, we won. The way the players approached the game, the tactics, us losing most of the battles and not really having any plan how to defend, attack or keep the ball in meaningful areas- he has to take a lot of blame. Sadly, he does not do that and that is one of the things that irks me. He blamed the players for taking shortcuts and said it was not tactics. Really poor post-match interview for me in that he was right in saying we were poor and got away with it, but surely he has to realise that tactically/formation and personnel is not working. We look a very ordinary-poor side and if this carries on, we will not keep winning as we have some tougher opponents to come. Wilder, Knill and Prestridge have some big decisions this week. I would not play Cannon and Choudhury yet – that is my opinion. I think Peck/Davies and Souza with Campbell/Moore needs to be the way forward and let those players earn that shirts. I recall when we went up under Warnock and we brought in Akinbiyi/Horsfield and a few others and Warnock realised and went back to Shipperley etc and we got it over the line. Still, even with talk of personnel, I worry what the plan is to get up the field and how we create. Currently teams are creating as many (or more) chances than us most games and we somehow have scraped wins against sides like Plymouth, Bristol City, Swansea, Watford, Derby and now Portsmouth when in every game, those teams were probably as good or if not better than us. These are not good sides either. We are not controlling games at all and look easy to get through defensively and not really creating. We are eking out wins due to some quality from the forward players but have also got away with teams missing sitters against us. We need to wake up or in 3-4 weeks we will be not in this position. Still for all the criticism, you have to step away and say he IS getting wins and results and that is the sign of a winner and a good manager. He is not daft though and know that we must improve. Maybe Burnley fans are saying the same but they have an imperious defence. We do no look great at the back or going forward really and look a bit of a mish mash of a side. There is talent and depth now but I am not sure he has worked out how to put it all together?

Portsmouth – Excellent in general play and maybe one of, if not the best side to come to the Lane (Burnley maybe take that award). Like a few of the other strugglers recently that have come down here, have realised that you can have a go at us and get at us and create things. Hull scored 3. Pompey should have scored double that really. They won the battles, showed a great approach to being positive and pressed all game. They swarmed all over us, won first and second balls. The forwards imposed themselves and the wingers – especially Murphy- were excellent. Defensively they restricted us to maybe 2 or 3 chances (the Brewster one was right at the end) on the break and only the Clarke header I can think of before 2-1? They were very good and surprised me how well they played. They did not sit back and like at Fratton Park, will not believe they did not win the game when they have been better than us in both games.

The major negative is, that despite all that, they switched off on the two goals. Hamer was given too much time as was Brewster and the marking in the middle was poor. The big issue though, even with these two goals, is they had so many chances and just missed them. Time after time they got the ball into our box and moved it to the side and got round us. They missed two open goals in front of the Kop, hit the bar and Bishop had one disallowed. Cooper made 3 or 4 good saves too and they had other chances when the ball did not quite drop. They have to take these though and were made to pay and football is about putting it at one end and keeping it out at the other, as Mr Adkins (he will be sacked soon I think at Tranmere!) used to say.

Still, if they play like that they will be fine and do not see them going down. They have a bit of experience and some tidy players. If they had a quality forward you think they may be much higher up?

Opponent Man of the Match – Murphy was their best player by some distance and his supply saw them miss two sitters, score a goal and have several other chances. Thought Bishop and Lang were a handful but did miss chances but imposed themselves and won so many headers (not that tall either). The midfield were busy and got on the loose stuff too. Thought the lad Ogilvie was good, despite missing a big chance.

Opponent Weak link – Shaughnessy was slow to react to the Hamer goal and did not get close enough and he also seemed to be the one not reacting on the cross when we scored the second. I may have got this wrong but both centre backs will feel they could do better on the goal. Swanson also was slow to get across to Brewster.

Referee/Officials – Thought he was very fussy and even though we were rubbish – he gave them a lot of soft fouls and liked to blow his whistle a lot. Not sure I had an issue with any of the bookings but he was just stopping the game too much for very little I felt and gave them loads of free kicks around our box, which fortunately they did not make us pay for. Nice he did actually stop the game for the tribute on the 15th minute for Harvey Willgoose.

Crowd – It was flat again but not helped by the poor performance where United never got going. It became frustrating and you could sense it. I did not hear many boos at half time but as second half went on, you could hear the fans pleading with the players to step it up. It never really happened until we got that goal and did improve towards the end. I am not sure anyone was really punching the air at full time really despite the win, with many blowing their cheeks out and sighing with relief at the end! Pompey fans were in good voice and backed their team- they always travel in good numbers for such a distance. They will not believe they went home with nothing.

Agree with all that, good job they had rugby boots on . We are a total shambles and have been for a while,tactics-hate that long ball shit, lack of identity,no shape, square pegs, players form going downhill fast. Take Hamer and Cooper out of the side and a league 1 side at best. Vini, still carrying an injury? Cos he looks as mobile as Brian Potter. Top report again.

I agree DB we haven’t had a convincing performance in a long while now I can’t believe we are still in the top 2 . Yesterday we could & should have been 4-1 down by half time , tactically we were all over the place . We were absolutely wide open down our right hand side & you cannot play Clark & BBD together down there , Souza & Choudhury are too similar a both we’re going into the same areas to try & find space . Bishop win everything against Anel & Robinson , god are we missing Souttar ! Every cross that came into the box caused chaos , those two as a centre back partnership just doesn’t work as there’s no leader or organiser back there . Up top Canon just looks a square peg in a round hole so far & we only settled down after the substitutions and basically shit housed a win against a side fighting a relegation battle .
Not looking forward to Weds night at all , we are only going to get away with these poor performances for so long , big improvements needed ⚔️

Spot on

We have been woeful recently - Wilder needs to grew up a bit and take some responsibility.

Every team we play , their fans just cannot believe what they are seeing from a top two side . Almost every opponent. I can’t believe it either

Harsh write up…..some might think the low marks and negative criticism are exaggerated but it’s accurate.
Clarke was so poor I expecting him to be subbed off at half time to put him out of his misery….he’ll have had nightmares last night.
In injury time Brewster should have scored to make it 3-1 but if that had gone in I’d have burst into laughter.
Felt almost embarrassing that we stole all 3 points, you look for excuses and all you can think of, is that with all the new players they need time to gel.

Our win was probably the most unjust scoreline since our 0-4 home defeat to Scunthorpe in league 1.
That was an even more incredible match, where we were brilliant, having chance after chance, think we had 3 goals disallowed and hit the wood work several times.
Scunthorpe were outclassed, hardly ventured in to our half, had 4 shots and scored all 4.

I agree with most of that. I felt a bit for Clarke I have to say. Murphy clearly had him on toast for pace in the first half but at no point did anyone come and help out doubling up. BBD completely left Ogilvie to run into the box for their goal but neither did he go over to help Clarke. Murphy did fade in the second but potentially by that point the damage could and probably should have been done. We look totally disjointed at the moment and changing personnel etc. isn’t helping. We need a big reaction against Boro on Wednesday. We do have a lot of new players and others working their way back to fitness so in real terms it’s almost a preseason time but we just don’t have the luxury of this.
Having said all that I’d have taken this position in February at the start of the season.

As soon as Rak Sayki drove down the side to the byline and put a cross in, you could feel the tide shifting. Suddenly we had a threat and they were panicking.

Agree…..their defence didn’t have anything to do…it was so easy for them….Cannon and Campbell were too isolated and hardly touched the ball.

All our subs….changed the game making it more of an even contest.
Peck was impressive, finally gave us a midfield and showed that having 2 defensive midfielders (Souza and Chouhury) was holding us back.
Brewster looked like a man on a mission trying to win a contract extension, worked hard and he showed little signs of being a top end Championship player,
Rak Sakyi was a threat forcing Portsmouth to worry and think about defending.

Wilder has received tactical criticism which I believe is deserved
But an interesting tactical switch that hasn’t been mentioned is the negative taking Cannon off and putting on Holding as an extra central defender.
In retrospect, although negative, this probably won us the game. So Wilder deserves praise for the switch.

Our defence (especially the Anel/Robinson partnership) reminded me of last season.
Their confidence looked shot, especially Anel who’s mind seemed to be elsewhere, having 3 central defenders helped us.

I was actually wondering during the game yesterday how many goals Newcastle would have scored against that team.

“Moore is too slow”
“O’Hare has no end product”
“Peck can’t control the midfield”
“Need a right back who can provide a threat”

We lost a lot of the components of our success this season with that starting line-up.

Very good report. An accurate summary of what I saw.

It was 100 per cent about tactics, contrary to what Wilder says.

Two defensive midfielders together stifled creativity. Hamza was doing the late career Norwood thing of standing between the CBs. There were huge gaping holes and we could not advance the ball. Thank goodness Peck changed this.

Clark was wretched (and Murphy excellent - best performance this season by an away player at the Lane). I would rather have Gilchrist.

The blend up front was wrong. All of them were out of sorts. O’Hare was ever present until yesterday and we missed his pressing. Cannon was a complete non factor. BBD looks out of sorts. Campbell never got the ball.

I am fine with keeping possession but I got sick and tired of our refusal to stretch them. Clark and Burrows time and again refused to go down the wing. That has to be due to orders. Short sighted imho.

Brewster played well but it was of course certain he would fail to score at the end. McCallum also did a very solid job.

Portsmouth are interesting. The keeper’s free kick taking was something out of the Dave Bassett play book, and their corner routine causes problems. Still, they have only themselves to blame for not ending the winless run (now 24 league and 2 Cup games).

Early in the season we were baffled at the number of teams who would come to the Lane and not attempt to come at us. With the exception of an out of sorts Norwich, that seems to be over now. If we don’t buck our ideas up Boro will rip us a new one.

Absolutely spot on report Deadbat as usual.
Cannot argue with any of that.
You'd hope that we'll see changes for the Boro game, especially being as it's midweek. I completely agree that the new players should earn the right to play. I'm not convinced by Cannon particularly, if he has strengths, we certainly haven't seen them.
On that performance, Brewster, Peck and McCallum should all start and I'd like to see Campbell start up top instead of Cannon. I think we'll see O'Hare back too, hopefully for BBD, who like some of the others, looks miles away from match fitness.

I left the ground thinking "wow we got away with that but three points is three points" but having now reflected and having thought about Wilders comments I am a little more concerned. I understand that we had recently looked like a team running on empty, with a couple of players desperately needing a rest, not least Peck and O'Hare and that a couple of players who were not in great form, Gilchrist and Robinson. Yes we have players coming back from injury and new players coming in. But why suddenly try to make all the changes and players coming back from injury at once, as well as playing a formation we have not really played before. Why haven't we introduced these players gradually? Why haven't we simply used these players from the bench? I didn't see players arrogantly strutting about as Wilder seems to suggest. I saw a team who were extremely ponderous on the ball, almost like they didn't know what they were supposed to be doing. I could in no way be considered anti Wilder but I think the players are only partly to blame for yesterday.

"Dick Turpins Blades rob another win" should have been the headline. Don't buy into we've got over sixty points and we're second. We were dreadful for an hour.

We didn't play with a 10 yesterday, despite the mare he had last week we missed COH imo. When he drops deep he provides the outball for the DM's and like Hamer has the ability to turn his man in a tight space and get us up the field quickly. Both Hamer and COH look better when the other is in the team and whilst they at times over elaborate they force the oppo onto the back foot with their quick feet. We have to go back to 4-2-3-1 against Boro and stop shoe horning new signings into the team and changing formation.

Clarke worse than Gilchrist, why he chose to continually show the line to Murphy was baffling. The mess we made in getting 6 loanees in ensured we didn't have the option of bringing Gilchrist on. Again no cover down the right as BBD looked unfit. Anel/ JLT partnership was exposed in the air as Pompey went hoofwaffen in the second half. Agree we may have to go with a 5 in certain games Weeds especially with their pace as I can't see CW dropping JLT despite how well Anel played on the left in a 2 with Souttar. Only Seriki has the capability to deal with pace at full back as he showed when he cancelled Sunlans Watson out in the second half at home. Call me old fashioned but if you're going with a 4 at the back their first priority is to defend.

Pompey weren't the best team to come to the Lane imo, Sunderland and Burnley were better. They were however tactically astute enough to lay bare our weaknesses for the rest of the division to see.

Managers post match comments were fooling no one. It was all about tactics wrong formation and square pegs in round holes. The subs made the difference but no one around me could fathom out why we didn't change it at half time as it seemed we were desperate to concede in the first 15 of the second half before changes were forthcoming. Big game coming up against Boro. CW said JRS, Brewster and Peck were pushing for starting places. Also mentioned wanted to get COH on so it will be interesting if the faults evident to all are rectified when the team is announced on Wednesday evening.

I did wonder if Wilder thought 'Portsmouth? Well beat them I'm going to experiment with the side today'....the only thing I can think of to excuse the performance

When under the cosh, Wilder is very good. Having made the signings he wanted, having got the options he wanted, we appeared to be confused.
Static midfield, ponderous build up, strikers starved of service, you cannot blame Cannon and Ty for that. What Ipswich fans said about Clarke was correct, he got absolutely mullered by a quick winger. Somehow, Wilder has to sort this before Boro, Leeds, or it will be all over after 20mins.
We so miss big Harry , nobody attacking the crosses coming in, fellow Blades , it could be rough few weeks.

The only thing I can find to disagree with there is that I thought Clarke improved second half. His performance first half was borderline humiliating—turned inside out again and again by a bog standard Championship winger.

Overall: we may grind and fluke our way to promotion playing this way but it’s not an enjoyable watch and doesn’t bode well for a season in the PL under Wilder. Have to hope he can use the next 15 games to create something coherent out of this pretty expensively-assembled squad.

League one side at best..???
Bizzare comment

A few things, firstly I fully agree with that report so thanks for writing, could a copy be sent to Wilder and Knill as I'm sure they haven't seen what we did yesterday, does Wilders drinking impact on his decision making and what has happened to Knills "coaching skill set he had 1st era?

Robinson/Anel doesn't work, there is evidence of this from last season, sides have realised this and are clearly taking advantage.

For the love of God I had to sit through Warnock playing monty and legs of wood in midfield in 2006 and latterly non footballers monty and Doyle as a midfield pair under Wilson, surely if Wilder is a fan he can see that Choudhury and Souzza as a pair won't work.

Rak Sakyi/Brooks - at least one has to start surely?

O Hare - been arguably 1 of the best players all season why bench him?

Wilders stubbornness - he contradicts himself - says players that are new take time to bed in then yesterday plays BBd, Clarke, cannon, Choudhury, why also when David Blunkett could see our arses were being torn a new one in 1st half didn't he change?

The side that had us purring had Souttar, Arblaster, OHAre and JRS and this side now feels weeker.

Lastly Wilder must have had best part of 15-20 million spent In Jan and I suspect Wilders gaffers won't be happy

I watched Birmingham against Wrexham last week and we were very similar, tough watch, don’t tell me that wasn’t a shocker again yesterday.
Birmingham and Wrexham will likely be championship teams next season so your comparison to league one at best doesn't work

Deadbeat reports are better than the games. Unlike the teams performances if late, these reports are well thought out and have some bite. You have passion for the Blades and it shows. Maybe a copy can be pinned on the dressing room wall so the players can see what the paying public thinks of their efforts. Or maybe they know.
Major change in performances in all departments, except Engands number one, needed for the run in or it's......the playoffs
