The Blades took another giant leap towards promotion as they saw off play off chasing Millwall 2-0 at Bramall Lane. A goal from Man of the Match Jack O’Connell in the first half was doubled up from another Kieron Freeman strike as United dominated for long spells. A nervy last 15 minutes saw Millwall finally create a few chances but in truth United had been in control until the inevitable late surge the visitors threw at them. The football played for long spells was a joy to watch as the Blades controlled possession and tempo. United now have a sizeable lead over the chasing pack and with a further home game to come in 8 days against an almost relegated Coventry, United can take another step towards the finish line.

Manager Wilder made three changes with Done, O’Shea and Ebanks Landell all missing out. The latter had a minor ankle injury. In came Lafferty, Duffy and Coutts. Millwall also made changes leaving out the experienced Steve Morison but had Blades fan Lee Gregory leading the line.

United were turned round at the start of the game and kicked towards the Kop. Millwall started the better but Moore caught a low cross and slowly United started to come into things and Coutts and Fleck began to dictate things. One move saw the ball switched from Coutts to Lafferty before the ball was intercepted. Freeman then played a neat ball and then after Fleck found Duffy and then Lafferty, the ball was just cut out before the waiting Freeman could get on the end of it. The corner came in and Archer was nowhere near it but the ball was cleared despite the goalkeepers appeals for a foul. This indecision was fatal moments later as another corner came in from Fleck and O’CONNELL met it at the back post to power his header home. It was the second successive game the big defender had scored at the Lane.

Soon after it was nearly 2-0. Lovely football saw Lafferty, Hanson and Duffy involved and the ball fell for Coutts who drove a fierce shot that looked bound for the top corner but keeper Archer made a superb save tipped over the bar at full stretch. Archer had been clearly struggling and had to limp off soon after. It seemed an age before the substitute keeper King finally emerged from the dugout with Lions goalkeeping coach Kevin Pressman seemingly more ready to go in goal than the sub!

After this stoppage, United continued to come again. The football was crisp and purposeful and Coutts and Fleck were controlling things all over the field. Millwall were struggling to get into the game at all and Freeman burst down the right and got into the box but his appeals for a penalty were turned away and referee Simpson somehow penalised the United man! Millwall changed their formation to try and tighten up midfield where they were simply not seeing the ball.

Wright was booked after a poor foul when Millwall threatened to break. In the same move Basham had been fortunate not to connect with his man after wild lunge himself! The free kick came to nothing and United came again.

Hanson had won most headers and nodded just wide from a cross from Fleck. Lafferty then played in Duffy but he overran the ball as Untied continued to make all the running. Fleck then shot wide after more great work from Coutts and then Duffy in the build-up. Thompson was booked for a poor tackle on Fleck. The half time whistle came with the fans applauding a good first half performance and a well-deserved lead.

After the break, it seemed Millwall had changed their formation again in an attempt to wrestle some control back. However United continued to control things and a half chance for Duffy after Hanson laid off was seen off. Freeman then got into space but his cross was cut out. Morison had come on for the disappointing Onyedinma but the experience striker was beat to the ball by the excellent O’Connell. The centre back sprinted up field beating a number of challenges and then keeping the ball in to cross after running the full half. The ball was not cleared and eventually it fell for FREEMAN who curled in a superb shot that gave the sub keeper King no chance. It was his 10th goal of the season in a remarkable campaign and another super finish showing his ability to score when in such areas of the field.

Carruthers came on for Duffy for United and O’Brien for Craig for Millwall as the game entered the final 25 minutes. It became a bit scrappy after this and neither side had many chances. However, a very good chance did come soon after when Wallace played in Gregory and he was in on goal but he shot wide as he collided with Moore. Both players lay prostrate on the floor. Moore seemed to have come off worse but after receiving treatment he was eventually ok to continue although seemed a bit groggy. United were now giving it away and sitting back deeper and Basham had to clear off the line from a good chance for Williams after a pull back from Romeo. The Blades had become somewhat ragged after having such control.

The crowd tried to give them the final push and although Morsion got into a good area, he handled the ball and was rightly booked. The game entered five minutes of stoppage time and United saw this out professionally to signal another win with a huge roar on full time. The embraces from groups of players on full time signalled what a big win it was as the crowd roared their approval.

United – For the most part it was a really good performance. We started the game a bit slowly but by 10 minutes in we got control and then until maybe 70-75 minutes we were in control. We passed it well, played with confidence and moved the opponents about. We did not create tons of chances but a spell of super football saw us win a few corners and score and then after this we nearly got a few more and Millwall really struggled. I felt we maybe should have been 2-0 up at half time but to be fair we kept it going second half, did get the second and then it looked over. We got sloppy towards the end and they had a few chances but it was about a fair score in the end. It was really enjoyable to watch for long spells with Coutts and Fleck excellent and Basham and O’Connell behind doing a great job of putting us on the front foot. Hanson was a handful up top and the two wide lads kept causing problems all night.

We were brave on the ball and even though we gave it away a few times we did not stop trying to pass it and kept being positive at what we did. We moved it around nicely and showed some lovely touches. Some of the moves were a joy to behold. We did not maybe create quite as many chances despite the good stuff and a few balls just evaded the strikers. The fact we won 2-0 and two key men Duffy and Sharp were not quite at it, shows how well the team did overall.

It was a big win tonight and we now are close. We have a decent run in with more winnable games but for me regardless of the results at the weekend it is up to us; you would expect Bolton and Fleetwood to win their games against poor sides. We just have to beat Coventry next week and then see where that puts us. We may only need to win 2 more games to go up now. 3 would almost certainly do it. We must make sure there is no let up. Do not even think about the last few games. Just focus on Coventry next week and our attitude being right again. If it is and the crowd remain patient – it might not be a comprehensive win; it might be a scrappy 1-0; then we will be fine. We have lost 3 games in 30 odd games now. I cannot see a meltdown in the last few weeks but we have to ensure we do not get complacent. We still have to get the points but you do sense we are close and Wilder has the team so focused on doing what they need.

Millwall – I expected better. They had only lost 1 game in 16 was it before tonight and even though they had started to wobble with maybe the number of games catching up on them – the cup run and rearranged games; I look at the side and some of their players and I felt they would be a really tough game. I was pleased they left Morison out as he is a handful for me and they started with a few fresh players in after the aforementioned Saturday-Tuesday slog for last few weeks. They came out and started ok but after decent beginning, we completely took over and dominated the game. The keeper was hesitant and this led to the goal. They then had to change the keeper and then after this struggled to stay in the game and were fortunate to be just 1-0 at half time.

They changed formation about 3 or 4 times going from a 4 at the back to a 3 and then a 5 and then back to a 4 with 3 in the middle being a 2 and then back to a 3. I thought they offered little up top with Gregory isolated and the other lad Onyedinma not in the game. The midfield players could not close enough to Coutts or Fleck and they did not see much of the ball. For most of the game they struggled and the two centre backs just booted it out all game. They gave it away a lot and never really had any controlled spell – not sure what game Harris was watching when he said they were brave on the ball? They barely had it! They had a final flurry and had 2 or 3 decent chances with Gregory missing a one on one and then another few blocked or cleared away. To be hones they went long and started to knock it forward more and then pick up the pieces but they were always going to have a spell but it came too little, too late and not sure they did enough to even warrant a goal really. They were well beaten most of the game looking uncertain at the back, lacking in tenacity and skill in the middle and a bit powder puff up top.

A few weeks ago, they looked like making a run for automatic but it never happened and they have run out of gas completely and now look like struggling even for 6th. If they get in with some of the players they have though, I would fancy them in the playoffs despite them looking poor tonight.

Opponent man of the match : Tough win. Not sure anyone impressed that much. Even Morison when he came on did little. The midfield was struggling all night but the lad Wallace had a few neat balls/touches. The lad who came on, O’Brien might have been one of the few who came out with any credit as at least he got on the ball and tried to make things happen.

Opponent Weak link : The keeper Archer looked really poor at the start and his indecision in part contributed to the goal and then he made a great save and came off. I felt the two lads we have been linked with were really poor. Gregory was never in the game and then missed a good chance. He was outplayed by our back lads. I also thought Webster looked poor. Not sure I would want us to sign him but he was very good in the game at the Den. Took a knock and never recovered. He looked clumsy but was not helped by his partner, the lad Cooper. He was woeful all night and might just win the weak link, although he had a few contenders. The lad Onyedinma really was dreadful also and the midfield lads never were in the game.

SUFC Player Ratings –

Moore 7/10 – Made a few standard saves from long shots and his handling was fine. Did not have too much to do but was calm and assured. Then came for a through ball and Gregory just beat him to it but clipped wide. They both collided and for a moment it looked serious. Thought he had got knocked out but got up after treatment. After this seemed to hesitate a few times after the collision including not coming for one cross as the ball fizzed across. His kicking was poor at times as he often seemed to kick to touch or out of play.

Freeman 8/10 – Another goal and another very good performance. Got up and down the flank all night. Showed real energy and industry with some lovely bits of skill. Set up one attack early with a clever threaded ball inside and then nearly got on the end of the eventual move and it led to a corner. We kept them penned in and scored soon after. Continued to cause real problems and they could not pick him up and then second half scored from almost a left sided position as he continued to bomb forward. Really cool finish as he used bodies to curl it into the far corner giving the keeper little chance. Been a revelation this season.

Lafferty 7/10 – Thought he did some really good things and then some poor things. He actually put over 2 or 3 great balls that were in a good area but no one met but also played some bad crosses too that were over hit or hit the first man. Had a spell first half where he was very good and kept getting into really good areas and was a real nuisance down the left. Some of his touch and passing is frustrating and he can give it away quite a bit but we do seem better when he plays and is a steady player. Just wish he could be more careful with final ball/cross. Second half did some decent things defensively but did get caught a few times also.

O’Connell 9/10 – My Man of the Match. Tremendous from start to finish. Desire, tenacity, will to win and skill. He led from the back. Scored a bullet header from a corner, nearly got another not long after and was a constant threat both breaking up their attacks and also going forward. Never let his man settle all night and was on the front foot. He won everything in the air and was brilliant in the tackle. His part in the second goal was superb as he got in front of the wily Morison, then cantered up the field before setting up the initial chance. The play was then recycled and we scored soon after. It was an inspirational piece of play. After this he won header after header and was willing us to win making key blocks also. Been getting better and better and had a really good season.

Wright 7.5/10 – Steady eddy again. Broke up bits and pieces and kept it simple. For 70 minutes they barely had a real chance of note. He did pick up a booking for a pretty cynical but maybe needed foul as they broke after Coutts had given it away earlier. After this he had to keep his cool and made one great tackle towards the end as they broke. He did get caught for pace when they played in Gregory and he should have scored. His phenomenal record of never having lost for United continues. More than a good luck charm; he exudes calmness at the back.

Basham 8/10 – Excellent again. Been so consistent in last couple of months. Whether midfield or at the back his will to win and commitment has been a joy to see. He cares massively and makes tackles he has no right to win. He never hides and wants to go forward when he can but also does the dirty stuff at the back. A few giveaways tonight but his passing has been much better and he has been more assured in everything he has done in recent times. Even when he did give it away then he often got back to recover things. Won so many headers and blocks yet again and put his body on the line when had their spell near the end. Really can see how much winning promotion means to him.

Fleck 8/10 – Another very good performance. He just kept moving it on and him and Coutts metronomic play continues to completely dominate opponents. He showed again his short and long passing and good close control but he also put his foot in and made tackles. I thought him and Coutts as they have much of this season completely controlled midfield. They got it off the defenders and moved it forward often at a good tempo. It was not backwards and sideways and there was real variety in how he moved it around the field. Made the first with his corner which was a good delivery. He had put one good one over earlier too. Only negative was a few rash challenges; he took one booking with a cynical body check and also was involved in a collision and came off with a nose bleed when he smashed into an opponent in a high challenge. Can see why he is in the running for the player of the season in the league (with Sharp and Morris at Scunthorpe). Needs to still work on his shooting at times as he leans back too much but that is nit picking.

Coutts 8/10 – As above. Just dictated play most of the game. Sure he gave it away a few times and actually put us in the mire on more than one occasion but that will happen when you keep passing it and don’t just lump it. He kept going and some of his cross-field balls were superb. Two or three in our dominant spell first half got us into the last third and saw us pin them in. He also like others got back and worked hard to recover any errors. He showed some lovely neat football and was involved in some great stuff first half. He has also started shooting and nearly scored with a great effort which the keeper tipped over just after we made it 1-0. Had another shot off target second half.

Duffy 6/10 – Not much came off for him tonight on the ball. He did get in some great positions and took 2 or 3 men just by his positioning and runs alone. This cannot be underestimated and he always keeps looking for the ball. Sadly, when he got it he gave it away so many times and was very sloppy with the ball I felt. Too many times he lost it or miscontrolled it or passed went astray. He was lucky to last as long as he did but then as I say his runs and ability to get into those little pockets does still cause problems even though things do not always come off. When he went off we did get worse though!

Hanson 7/10 – Thought he had an excellent first half and he won most headers, led the line well, caused all sorts of problems leading to them slicing balls out, giving it away and looking very concerned every time the ball went into his area. Really worked hard for the team and chased so much down. A few times he gave it away and I felt tired second half and did not really hold it up as much. Felt he had little help off Sharp. A few times crosses came in though and Hanson maybe should have got on the end of it. I felt he was a real plus first half but less so second half and started fouling a lot.

Sharp 5.5/10 – His poorest game for some time. His touch was poor and he was too far off Hanson who did some really good work. The ball never stuck and he also gave it away sloppily. He did a few alright things but I cannot recall him having any clear chances or even looking like scoring. One amazing piece of control second half from a long ball was great but the he gave it away. Not much went right for him I felt. He kept plugging away and did work hard for periods but at other times looked shattered and surprised he did not come off before he did. Not having his best spell in terms of performances and goals but sure he will come again with another burst before the end of the season. Did look tired tonight. A week off may do him good. Without Lavery I thought he might give Chapman a run but he opted to stiffen up the midfield behind him with O’Shea replacing him.

Subs

Carruthers – Came on for Duffy but he was not much better. He was a bit sloppy with the ball and I felt he became part of a poor spell when we started to sit back and were not keeping it. Hard when he always comes on in games and often he has to get used to the pace of the game. Millwall had a good spell and at times he failed to stay on his man but I get sense he is much better going the other way. Tried to win free kicks too much rather than staying on his feet. As Wilder says needs a full preseason to get fully fit as this is so important in our pressing style of play.

O’Shea – Brought on for Sharp and played in the midfield and ended up wide right as we tried to stem some of the crosses from that side. Won a few free kicks but his job was to just cover and do some of the defensive stuff rather than offer an attacking threat.

Manager – Wilder 8/10 – Another win and another very good performance for long spells. I felt they would offer more of a threat but we managed to see off their threats most of the night. We had most of the ball and until the late flurry they were never really in it. We controlled things and I felt played some good stuff all night. He has kept the team motivated and they continue to deliver performances results. We need 2 or 3 more big ones to seal promotion and then he can get them refocused on trying to win the title. I remember trooping out of Millwall when we had lost and were bottom and I feared for us and him after such a bad start. He had completely turned it around. What an unbelievable job he has done. Tremendous. Changed the whole ethos of the side and as well as the lovely football, goals from all over and confidence flowing, done two big things. Made us a tough side who is committed (we are not a soft touch anymore) and made them into winders and changed the mentality of a number of players who were stuck in a rut, or maybe on their way out.

Ref – Odd one. Started ok and tried to let things flow but by the end he became a bit annoying. Kind of glad he did not just get the book out first chance he could and let one poor foul go from them but then booked Wright; rightly for a bad one and after this started to become a bit fussy. He booked Thompson for a poor one on Fleck and also Fleck for a body check and Morison for an attempted Maradona (hand ball) near the end. These were fair enough but he became a bit fussy second half and it became very stop start. I felt he missed a few things. A few of the Millwall players jumped into men too much and were not always penalised. Not helped by his assistants who seemed like they had won a raffle. The one on the South Stand side seemed to not want to even put his flag up or give any decision. He kept looking at the referee as if he should decide for him!

Crowd – Another 20,000 plus. A bit down on recent weeks but was a Tuesday night and Millwall brought maybe 300 tops. I thought that the crowd were a bit nervy at times but for spells also applauded and purred over some of the play/football. They were really positive as they saw everyone was so committed and were really wanting to win. Even after mistakes the crowd willed players to recover errors and they often did. Towards the end, they gave the side the lift as they saw we had to dig in, like Charlton the other week. Another great reaction at the end as the team came to salute the fans and the rousing cheers went up again. You would expect sell outs for all 3 away games left but also a bigger crowd next week v Coventry and then 2 huge crowds close to sell out for Bradford and also Chesterfield as things could be at stake whether it be promotion or a title.

Pretty much how I say it DB but I'd have given Lafferty 7.5 if not 8.

Thanks as usual.

8's for All the defence bar JOC....who gets a 9.
Coutts was very good for 80 mins then seemed to tire....but still an 8. Fleck was superb as usual....8 every week minimum.
Duffy, 7, had flashes but not his best. Looks to have lost some confidence to run at players.
Hanson- 6....maybe a seven for his work. But no threat really.
Sharp-5 had a poor game and never looked like getting a goal. When Hes not a goal threat you question his role in the team as he doesn't do the job Hanson does. Maybe the tactic of hitting long just doesn't work for him.

Carruthers was very poor. Looked slow and miles off the pace, did nothing in 30 mins. 4.

Thanks Deadbat - very accurate. What a game O'Connel had tonight absolute class and rightly MOM

As another temporary exile, thanks Deadbat. Back soon

Great report, I thought Duffy although not his best game was better than a 6 - his movement and willingness to receive the ball in any position gives us so many options to play - he was far better than his replacement tonight.

Duffy 7, Basham 7.5, Freeman 7.5, otherwise agree with every word and every rating.

McCall was at the game, I bet he misses Hanson.

JO'C 28/1 apparently for the first goal. I reckon he's got 8/10 goals in him next season. While others trot up there corner after corner and rarely score this lad means to get the ball.

Coutts is simply unrecognisable from last season, easily an 8 last night. Fleck Man of the Season by a street.

Wright always there filling in when it matters. Talks them all through the game too.

Good report, Deadbat, apart from one mistake.

After Gregory and Moore collided Gregory lay prostrate but Moore was supine.

Glad to clear that up for you. :)

wright mom for me.. even the booking was a crucial pro foul.. there's a reason joc plays so well .. wright tells him what to do

Yes he does and when he plays and EEL doesn't, then J O'C' s role is to attack the ball and he is simply immense.

Moore - 6
Freeman - 8
Basham - 8
Wright - 7.5
O'Connell - 9
Lafferty - 7
Coutts - 8.5
Fleck - 8
Duffy - 6.5
Hanson - 5.5
Sharp - 5.5

Carruthers - 5
O'Shea - n/a

Wilder - 7 - just felt he should've changed things up front much earlier.

Fans - 6 - the ones who bothered to stay in the stadium past 85 minutes were OK I suppose. But it still feels flat all things considered.

Agree with the low marks for Duffy but it doesn't tell the whole story.

He was our main play maker again last night, trying to pull off artistic ambitious short passes and flicks. He's a joy to watch and some of his passes almost created clear chances.

However he gave the ball away far too much trying the difficult stuff
But to his credit he still came showing for and wanting the ball and he still continued to try his mazy dribbles or difficult passes.

I really believe that Duffy is the player the oppostion fear the most, the David Silva of league 1.

Excellent Report yet again Deadbat !
I was really disappointed how the side went into it's shell for the last twenty minutes - Throughout the first half and up and till we scored the second we were so dominant that a 4-0 scoreline would not have flattered us yet for some reason we sat back deep and invited Millwall to attack ! Might sound churlish to be slightly critical but we have set such high standards this season - My only other observation is that we tend to 'overplay' when in goalscoring positions !
The fact that we have scored as many goals perhaps reflects the total dominance we have in this division this season.
UTB - Onwards and Upwards !

Its players like Duffy who make the difference and having the confidence trying the difficult is the difference between creating chances and breaking teams down rather than going side to side and backwards taking the easy pass. He has been as instrumental as any of our team this year in bringing the success.

What did moore do at end of game? people saying his celebration was good - cartwheels????

He just punched the air and embraced a few players from what I saw but might have missed his double pike somersault.....
