Incredible late drama at Bramall Lane saw United win the game with almost the last kick of the game as Jamie Murphy’s superb individual strike won the day. The Blades had dominated the game from start to finish against an unbelievable negative Gillingham side but incredibly looked like they might lose the game after a brilliant finish from Luke Norris seemed to have snatched the most unlikely smash and grab raid.

Nigel Clough continued to change the side despite the win in the week at Leyton Orient and brought back Davies, Scougall, McEveley, McNulty and skipper Doyle. Murphy and Davies began on the flanks with Scougall supporting the most forward player McNulty.

United began on top and forced a few early corners. From one McEveley glanced wide before Davies had a slot shot saved after former Blade loanee Egan lost the ball. United continued to dominate without creating too many clear chances but Murphy was influential trying to get wide and get crosses in. Wallace also was involved early and shot wide. Doyle then had a shot saved before Wallace had an effort cleared away. United had been easily the better side but at times were slow to initiate the build up and thus Gillingham simply packed their defence repelling most attacks.

Further corner were won but nothing came to them and it took a run from Scougall to really open up Gillingham and win a free kick which Davies hit against the wall. Gillingham had barely had an attack although some indecision led to a half chance but McDonald was crowded out. United went back on the attack and a shot from Wallace was pushed away before just before half time from another corner, McNulty’s effort was pushed away and then eventually a follow up scrambled off the line.

United had controlled the game but lacked clear idea and penetration and after the break sought to up the tempo. It had an immediate affect as more clear chances came about due to quicker ball transferral and cleverer play in all areas. McNulty was in and went past a defender and the keeper and stayed on his feet before his effort from an acute angle was cleared off the line with appeals for a goal from some in the ground. Alas no goal line technology in League One! United continued to mount attack after attack. Scougall’s effort lacked conviction but soon after an effort from the head of Wallace was tipped over acrobatically from former Owl Bywater. The keeper then saved from Scougall as the game was now being played entirely in the Gillingham half.

A double change for the Blades saw the struggling McEveley replaced by Harris and Flynn coming on for Davies in two like for like changes. A rare chance for the Gills saw Loft fire a shot away that Howard saved before United were back on the attack.
They were desperately unlucky as Wallace played in McNulty but his shot came back off the post. He ought to have scored but it was still unfortunate in that the woodwork came to the visitors rescue.

Higdon came on for McNulty soon after as United tried to get that elusive goal. Alcock put in a cross from the left and Higdon’s header hit the base of the upright as Gillingham’s goal continued to lead a charmed life. It seemed like it would be one of those days. Bywater was finally booked for timewasting. In reality he could have been cautioned within the first 5 minutes such was his determination to take every second he could.

Gillingham had barely had an attack all game but then suddenly out of nothing from a throw in on the left the ball came in and NORRIS turned and hit an unstoppable half volley which swerved and dipped and went in off the underside of the bar.
Bramall Lane was stunned but the crowd were back on their feet soon after as a decent and patient team move saw Alcock get wide and drill in a low cross that HIGDON turned in smartly at the near post. United raced back to half way and spotted the ball determined to go for the win and were soon back on the attack. The referee added on 6 minutes which to be honest was the least Gillingham deserved for blatant timewasting all game.

United continued to bomb on and Gillingham were hanging on for dear life. The Blades won a free kick in a really good position but Higdon hit the wall and it seemed like that was it as the game entered the final minute of the sixth additional minutes added on. As the clock ticked onto 96; United sent the ball forward and Higdon knocked down for MURPHY. It seemed little was on but the winger beat one man and kept going drawing another before advancing on the keeper and slipping the ball under Bywater and into the net. It was virtually the last kick of the game and the Blades players piled onto the scorer. The game kicked off but was ended almost instantly with the irony of the Gillingham officials pointing to their watches as the players came off. It was the right result if a strange way of the final verdict being achieved.

United – First half was lethargic and slow and many were not happy at half time. We had completely controlled the game and had so much of the ball but for all this did not create very much. It was quite slow and the tempo was not there. It was too often backwards and sideways and with little penetration. Scougall and Murphy had a few decent runs but overall we did not test the keeper much (Wallace one low effort saved) and for all the corners/free kicks and play in their half, I cannot say we did enough really. We played too many long, high balls up to the centre backs and the approach lacked idea and subtlety. We did not have the pace or speed of thought and McNulty lacked numbers in and around him.

Second half was significantly better and we stepped up the tempo, pinned them back and really imposed ourselves on them. We got it down more and moved it forward at a pace going wide and through the middle. WE started to create genuine chances and hit the woodwork twice, had it cleared off the line and so many other close calls. We maybe should have been more clinical and at times still made poor decisions in the final third but overall you could not be too critical as we had completely dominated the game and played some decent stuff too but just could not put the ball in the net. They had an incredible amount of luck although the keeper played well too. It seemed like we would have to settle for a draw when they broke and scored which was incredible.

Fortunately we got a leveller from a well worked goal and well finished from Higdon and then after the deserved amount of additional time we got a few more chances and finally Murphy scored a great individual goal going away from two defenders and slipping it under the keeper. It was not far off the last kick of the game but a well deserved win. We had 27 shots (concern only 7 on target) and 16 corners to 1. It was one of the more one sided games I have seen in recent years.
Second half was much, much better regardless of whether we won it or not. We played at a better tempo and got on the front foot. We moved it around with pace and used width and created chances on the back of this urgency. IF we can repeat those standards we will be around the top 6. Granted Gillingham were poor and we should not forget another side at this level took us to pieces a week earlier so we need to have balance. Overall after some really slow and sluggish performance I felt today was a significant improvement (second half mainly). Wallace was a big plus and the defence did ok (under little pressure). We still need more up top for me (chances missed and lack of genuine nuisance factor – lack pace and/or that natural goalscorer) but it was a step in the right direction. Hopefully with some loan recruits and some players (Baxter and Campbell Ryce) coming back we can at least push on and try and show some consistency. Today though I could not criticise the side and the late winner made Bramall Lane a very happy place. Yes the game should have been over long before that but then if we had knew it would have ended like that we would have all taken it!

Gillingham – Really poor all game. Look all the world a relegation side and the poorest side United have faced this season at the Lane. They were negative and came for a 0-0. Nothing wrong with that but they never even tried to go forward most of the game and were timewasting right from the start. They were poor in possession and never looked a threat going forward. They gave it away and then sat back and kicked it away when it came near them. It was basic but mixed in with good keeping, some good defending and poor decisions they nearly got away with it. They also had a lot of luck all game and must have felt like it would be a classic smash and grab type performance.

They have a few decent players (McDonald up top for one) and if they had tried to attack they would have caused United more problems than such a pathetic approach to the game. Swindon would testify that if you go at United they are not great down the middle and in defence but sat back and tried to soak up pressure. The first half went well and they restricted our chances and were compact but second half it was literally attack v defence and their goal really led a charmed life. They survived so many close shaves and chances and were so fortunate to be level after having so many opportunities go missing.

They had a lot of luck and then incredibly with one of few times they even tried to mount an attack they scored a very good goal (to be fair we had not been able to do what they had done despite all the huffing and puffing). It seemed totally unjust they would win or even draw after we got level straight away but in the end their was some justice as we scored the late winner. Bywater played brilliantly (not a keeper I have rated from his Derby-Wednesday days etc) and seemed set to deny us but even he could not do anything for the two goals. A side that of course has very restricted resources and will rely on their home form to see if they can stay safe but on today’s evidence they will be fighting a relegation battle. IF they had lost 3 or 4-0 it wold have been a realistic score line and cannot say they were unlucky to lose so late. In reality it had been coming all second half. , Taylor and Hessenthaler’s reaction at the end was a bit pathetic considering their approach all game. I often criticise United but today the visitors got what they deserved for such an approach to a game of football; nothing.

Howard 7/10 – Had very little to do. At times I felt he could have claimed the ball when he left it to the centre backs to clear rather than taking authority. In overall play he made one low save that was expected and then had no chance with the bullet shot that looked to have won it.

McEveley 7/10 – Some decent stuff with a few uncertain moments first half but overall he was steady enough. Maybe made a few poor decisions going the other way but did at least try and get down on the overlap. He has been a better signing than I thought he would be and at the moment Harris has some work to do to regain his place.

Collins 7/10 – Steady throughout really under little pressure. They had one shot saved and then a wonder goal when they broke and scored which maybe you could look at the centre backs but it was something out of nothing and was only really a half chance. The rest of the game the centre backs were fine and tried to come out when they could and kick start the attacks.

McGahey 7/10 – Steady under little pressure all game. Him and Collins barely had an attack to repel and for the most part they were more involved in getting the ball forward. They had a lot of time to get on the ball and move it on. At times first half they were a bit slow but did get better as the game went on.

Alcock 6.5/10 – Thought he had a really poor first half and looked uncertain in most things he did. His control was off as was his passing. He got better in the second half but I would say he could have played much further forward as he had no one to mark and at times needed to bomb on more (as much as I say a full backs first responsibility is to defend). However he did get in a good positon and put in a good cross the equaliser. I like him but last couple of home game his standards have not quite matched first few games I saw him play.

Davies 6.5/10 – His set plays were not at the usual standard and many were too long or did not beat the first man. He kept plugging away but at times he lacked pace to beat his man and so many of his crosses came from way too deep. Had a mis hit shot twice on a good opportunity in the second half and a few other poor decisions when in the last third. Not totally surprised he went off in the end.

Doyle 8/10 – Really solid game. He picked up every loose ball; won all the tackles and was able to ensure we got it and moved it on. At times things in front were too slow or lacked impetus but that was not really down to Doyle who was excellent in everything he did. Showed good touch, rarely gave the ball away and protected the defence so they only had a couple of efforts all game. Maybe got away with a pull back on half way right at the end but overall I felt he and United controlled midfield from start to finish.

Wallace 7.5/10 – I like him from what I have seen of him. Today he did give the ball away quite a bit and at times things did not always come off but he at least was positive and always looked to get on the ball. Has good control, nice poise and can go short and long. Had a lot of decent efforts on goal. Quite committed in the tackle and does not shirk a challenge. Has a nice style about him and is busy but wants to try and go forward. A massive improvement on Basham and if he gets fitter and a run of games could be a real asset alongside Doyle.

Murphy 7.5/10 – He had a few decent runs first half where he tried to take the ball to the full back and get beyond him and got some crosses in or won a few corners. Then he had a spell where he was less involved but he did show more positivity generally in terms of trying to get at the defenders and get to the by-line. Had a few scrambled efforts or cross-cum-shots that narrowly missed and was always one of our main threats as the onslaught continued. Then right at the end scored a brilliant individual goal as he ran and committed defenders before slipping it under the keeper.

Scougall 7/10 – First half he was one of the few that tried to carry the ball forward and had a few decent runs including one run where he was upended. He at least tried to run at the opposition rather than go sideways and backwards. Ironically when we got stronger I felt he was less influential in the second half and can remember fewer moments where he was involved in terms of our attacks. A player that had talent and can get into good areas but he flits in and out of games and needs to assert himself more.

McNulty 6.5/10 – A mixed game. Much of the match and particularly the first half seemed to just pass him by with little sticking to him albeit with poor service but he did get more involved as the game went on. He hit the post with a pulled shot and should have scored with a one on one. I think there is some promise there but hard for him to play up top on his own unless the service is spot on which for the most part it was not. Would like to see him with a partner and see if he had more of an impact. He will be disappointed not to score today as he did have some good chances and although luck and keeping played a part; we did score two after he went off.

Subs-

Harris
– Came on for the seemingly hobbling McEveley. He was playing more as a second left winger than a full back. One poor cross and one decent cross. He is another that needs to get back to the standards of last year to get back in the side regularly.

Flynn – Brought on to add width. He got a few crosses in and was part of the siege on their goal that eventually led to us getting the goals. He is in and out a lot at the moment and needs to ensure that he is more consistent to nail down that first team place.

Higdon – He came on and hit a post with a header, was involved in quite a few attacks and then scored a decent near post finish. He also was involved in the winner. Unsure he is still fully fit (often does not fully leave the ground when jumping) and needs to ensure that if he gets a start he can do it rather than in the fits and starts he has showed.

Manager rating:

Clough 7.5/10
– The first half was slow and lacklustre and we lacked tempo and pace to match our control and domination with the ball. At least at the half time break he seemed to give them a kick up the backside and the second half we were significantly better in all aspects. We really should have been out of sight and missed so many chances albeit with bad luck mixed in. It would have been desperately unlucky but to be fair we kept plugging away and one of his changes Higdon scored a goal and was involved in the winner. I felt today we were much better in many aspects of the game and actually could have won the game by a big margin. I am hoping we can have some continuity of selection and thus performances leading to some run of results. We need to ensure we can keep t the standard of the second half which were more like the side we saw in the run in of the second half of the season.

Officials – I did feel he did not do enough about the constant time wasting from the Gills all game. They were at ‘it’from minute one and it was constant all game. He should have booked the keeper early days before his ridiculous involvement and raising of hands to stop us getting the ball back when we had a corner. He actually should have been sent off for numerous unsportsmanlike pieces of play. Several other bits of spoiling and time wasting also went unpunished from other players. In terms of the general game they did ok and I cannot recall many major decisions being wrong aside from him not stopping their delaying tactics. There were not many bad fouls all game from either side. A few cynical pull downs got the deserved free kicks and bookings for Gillingham but we also got away with one when I felt Doyle held his man back at 1-1 when on halfway and they tried to break. If given he could have been sent off. It was a hard one to call but I have seen them given. At least for all the criticism I gave the referee he did at least add on a fair amount (6 minutes) and it could have been more. To see Hessenthaler at the end pointing to his watch and Taylor going at the fourth official was embarrassing. Were they saying he should have played more after we scored or that time was up – it wasn’t – he had not quite played the extra 6 minutes and even in this additional time they had delayed further – it is a minimum of 6 minutes.

Crowd/Officials – Another mightily impressive crowd of over 18,000 inside the Lane. It is astonishing we are getting such crowds when we are in the mid reaches of the third tier of English football and it really is commendable the loyalty from the United fans. Today many fans were frustrated with the slow build up and lack of guile in the first half but recognised the greater urgency and effort in the second half. I think even if we had failed to win then even the fans knew we had been desperately unfortunate but in the end they helped the side keep coming onto Gillingham and the late goal at the Kop end saw the inevitable roar that signalled the deserved victory.

Gillingham brought around 3-400 and they kept behind their team in a very one sided game and nearly got their reward with the late goal but ultimately went home with nothing. A long way to go home after such a late goal but their side’s negative approach got what it deserved in the end.

I would think it hard for anyone to disagree with that assessment DB.
Player ratings pretty much as I saw it too.
Alcock set himself high standards at the seasons outset and has dropped slightly off the pace lately, but still a useful player at this level.
Scougall showed some signs of last seasons version, but a way to go just yet to get there.
Higdon showed his capabilities in his fruitful cameo, encouraging!
McNulty I like, could be some goals in this kid given the correct service.
More of the same next week and the currently cocky 'mi ducks' from up rooard might get a tanning they aren't expecting!

Thought we kept the ball well today but my main bugbear from the match was our crossing from wide areas was poor. Some quality balls in and we'd have won this game by a country mile. Thought defensively Alcock did well and he got in some great areas supporting on the flank but invariably his crosses found Gillingham defenders. Thought Murphy, McEveley and Davies were just as culpable, although after that brilliant winning goal I'm quite happy to let Murph off just this once :)

I disagree with your McNulty comment on how "the first half seemed to just pass him by".

I thought he was the best player on the pitch in the 1st half (apart from perhaps Doyle). He used the ball extremely well with some great touches and composure in tight areas and almost got a good shot on target following a Messi-like run across the box.

Can't argue with the others though, top report as always.

I think McNulty and Alcock deserve an extra mark each and maybe a bit harsh on the ref who was excellent I thought. Bywater started time wasting after 4 and a half minutes ,taking over Billy Davies's record with Forest at 5 :)

Great report as usual, always good to read for us exiles

Sitwell - agree on McNulty. By far the best performance I've seen from him.

Can't agree on Alcock though, thought he was very poor in possesion (cross for goal aside) and wasted numerous good crossing opportunities.

I think my mark for McNulty is a reflection that he is striker and had two almost one on ones and scored with neither. They were good chances and ones you have to take. He has scored a couple of goals but his missed quite a few chances too and I am not sure he is quite the natural goal scorer we thought we might see. Still early with him. My concern is if he is not taking chances, he does not have the pace/height asset so we have to play it right to his feet and get men around him. Not sure he can play the lone striker role due to lacking physical presence.

The problem for Alcock is Davies...don't get me wrong Davies has his qualities and has won us points this season but he's not a winger and does not have the pace to beat his man. Countless times in the first half we were crying out for a JCR on the right as Alcock was forced to cut back inside and play a square ball to Doyle or Wallace...

Hmmm .... not sure I would agree that McNulty was the best player on the pitch, although I thought he did well in an unfamiliar role as a lone striker, which I don't think suits him.
I thought that Wallace was head and shoulders above everyone else as the best player on the pitch, got his head up and most of our positive play went through him. If we can keep him fit and not sell him in January for 2 bags of crisps, a shiny button and a promise of a friendly, then he could become a VERY influential player for us.
I'm probably Doyles biggest critic but I thought he had his best game in a R & W shirt for us yesterday. Credit where its due !!
Thought the ref was weak and very average yesterday.

I did say "in the first half". Wallace really started to dictate play more in the 2nd half, I felt anyway.

I've just seen Murphy's goal and it was quite remarkable.

Having picked up the knockdown from Higdon, he just ran at the Gills defence and as Deadbat says, he beat one man then another and they panicked. At that point there were 6 (SIX :-)) defenders around him, over half the team and he knocked the ball through and was really the only one who chased it, the defence just parted.

It's amazing. I've seen people score with mazy dribbles before (steve Wigley springs to mind) but I can't ever recall seeing someone beat a defence like that.

It's really funny after he bursts through the pack - 5 or six Gillingham players are chasing one United player - again, not something you see very often.

Super goal.

I always like to comment before reading everyone's comments.

Obviously the best performance of the season. I do wonder why in home games we always start brightly for the first 10 minutes then fade away. 2nd half was obviously much better. Just a few other points
  • Wallace will be the signing of the season if he stays fit. Everything good went through him.
  • We need to get the ball to Scougall in the little holes, we need to imprve on that.
  • McNuts is never going to hold anything up and if he plays we need to get the ball to him quicker down the site of the centre half.
  • Doyle plays better in yellow boots
  • McGahey and Howard need to work on their communication.

Overall a very enjoyable entertaining afternoon. For me whilst the result is important it was the performance that was most encouraging in that we totally dominated and controlled the game. I think Wallace was key to this as everything seemed to go through him in the second half. Him and Doyle looked a good combination in the central midfield. I would have also marked McNulty higher. Yes he could have had a couple of goals but the chances came as result of good anticipation to get in the position and his link up play was excellent. Do this enough times and the goals will follow. On another day we could have won by 4 or 5. Still think we need a couple of quality loans to become a genuine top 2 challenger but much better than what we have seen previously.

That, .... Has made my weekend complete! :)

You sir ..... are too easy to please !! :-)
Try adding a few pints of Timothy Taylors / Black Sheep / Marstons Pedigree and then we have a weekend to enjoy.

Blades win, pigs lose, dirty L**ds scum lose ...... I love football !! :D

Agree that Doyle had a good game. It was the sort of game where he had little to do defensively, as they attacked so little, and they also left him alone when he was in possession. When Doyle is not closed down, his simple passing is allright.

Wallace was fantastic. The youngsters like Reed and Dimaio should study his creative passing, always trying to set something up, not just keeping possession. VERY promising.

Can't agree on Alcock though, thought he was very poor in possesion (cross for goal aside) and wasted numerous good crossing opportunities.

Alcock isn't the most skillful or composed player and you could see his limitations a few times. But his energy is good and he deserves credit for the amount of crosses he put into the box in the second half, thought a few of them were quite good as well.

Alcock and Davies is not an ideal combination going forward though. Alcock would an out and out winger like JCR better. Davies at right midfield would prefer being supported by someone like Brayford, who can add strong running on the ball.

Alcock redeemed himself in the second half after a shaky first

I think JCR is Cloughs first choice wide right he can hurt defenders especially if they lack pace I think he'll keep Alcock in at the expense of Davies when he's got a full squad saying that Davies has been steady.

To everyone who thought Doyle had a good game: you didn't do what I did and get him mixed up with Wallace for pretty much the entire first half as they had the same boots on?!

You'd have been well fucked when real men played the game and all wore black boots.

A word for the ref and the extra 6 (or was it really 7) minutes added on. Well done, time wasting deserves punishing and that's the way to do it. I'm with Sitters though, they were doing it in the first half as well, could have had an extra 5 at the end of that half as well.

Thanks Deadbat, it's good to have a "proper" match thread instead of the cuntish "quiet when we win" that always follows a good win and is never worth reading.

After 4 and a half minutes the ball went behind the net half way to the corner flag at the Lane end ,as the ballboy ran to fetch it Bywater clearly shouted 'leave it' and ambled over to the ball and ambled back to the 6 yard box as slowly as possible. It was 5 and a half minutes before the kick was actually taken.
That may have been the extra minute Murphy had to beat their whole team before slotting it between that pig gobshites legs.

They got the extra minute with them having a sub on at 93 minutes - it's standard to add on one minute for substitutions is it not?

I think it's 30 seconds per sub Dazzler.

It was refreshing to see so much time added for what can only have been the time wasting. Having said that I'd have been gutted if we'd scored in the 87th and 89th and then seen 6 go up.

As Grecian2000 says I think its 30 seconds but as we also scored in injury time that would add some more on

I was at the Orient game on 22/10/01 when six mins went up (due to a bad injury to Williamson) and due to Simonsen's clanger they scored in the 7th minute of injury time to equalise :-(
