Sheffield United continued their unbeaten run with an unconvincing performance against 10 men Walsall at Bramall Lane. Whilst it was another 1-0 victory and another clean sheet, the Blades will have been disappointed not to have pressed home their numerical advantage with more goals as they ended up rather limping home in the end. Indeed it took another superb reaction save from teenager George Long to ensure they took all three points. The goal came from leading scorer Nick Blackman from the penalty spot after a professional foul was committed from Walsall defender Dean Holden on Dave Kitson leading to the foul and an obvious red card.

United named an unchanged side from the win at Preston with Dave Kitson shaking off a virus and the centre back pairing of Matt Hill and Harry Maguire continuing to keep the now fit again Neill Collins out of the side.

Walsall had former Blade Andy Taylor at left back as they won the toss and turned the Blades round forcing them to kick towards the Kop in the first half.

United began well with some neat and tidy football and forced a few early throws and corners that ultimately came to nothing. However, after a promising attack Walsall had looked to see of the danger before reckless pass from Baxendale put Kitson in the clear. As the frontman shaped to shoot Holden chopped him down and it was a clear penalty kick. The red card that followed was also obvious as the defender was clearly the last man and denied a clear goalscoring opportunity. After Holden had trudged down the tunnel, leading scorer BLACKMAN put the ball on the spot. He repeated his routine from previous penalty kicks and stuttered in his run up sending the keeper the wrong way before rolling the ball into the corner.

After the goal Walsall manager Smith had to rearrange his defence and had to bring off Baxendale for Downing with the incoming player going into the centre of defence to take the place off the departed Holden.

United looked to press home their advantage and nice work from Kitson led to a half chance for Blackman. McAllister then nearly headed into the path of the goalscorer before Walsall cleared. At the other end McDonald’s under hit back pass nearly put United in trouble but Long was quick to react to clear before Grigg got on the end of it. The striker had to receive treatment after the clearance but there was never any danger of it being deemed a foul as Long as got to the ball first and merely caught Grigg after he cleared the ball and was completely innocuous.

United had seen most of the ball but had struggled to create much and their sloppiness in possession was nearly punished as Walsall broke after a United free kick had been cleared. Cuvelier beat Williams with some lively skill and pulled back to Grigg but his low shot was superbly saved by Long who showed great reactions for the second game running. The young keeper got up and helped deny Paterson on the rebound too.

United had a chance just before half time but as Kitson headed goalwards he was adjudged to have pushed the centre back. McMahon then had a fierce shot over the bar. Not long after the half time whistle went. United had been distinctly average but were in front and had an advantage.

The second half began in much the same vain as the first with United controlling the ball but struggling to make much headway with poor play in the final third and some awful crosses seeing Walsall cope quite easily. Williams sliced badly wide and McDonald’s shot lacked power. Indeed the first real chance came when the visitors broke again and Cuvelier broke away but pulled his shot wide as the United defence looked all at sea.

McAllister had not really been in the game and was replaced by John Cofie who went straight out to the wide right hand side of the pitch.

Miller got his chance to warm applause from the crowd who wanted a lift as goalscorer Blackman departed. He soon had a chance as he broke the offside trap but Darlow saved well palming the striker’s lobbed finish wide. Kitson was booked for persistent offending and soon after he departed for Porter as United tried to hold the ball up for the closing stages. Bowerman came on for Walsall who tried to put another man up top but the game had been a poor one and there were few chances at either end as the home side seemed to be settling for what they had whilst the visitors although in the game were hardly throwing the kitchen sink at the Blades as the ten men started to tire. Miller had another few half chances showing his energy late on and Butler then went up for Walsall as the game entered the final four minutes of stoppage time. After the events of the Oldham game United will have been relieved to have got the ball in the corner and waste the final few minutes with little problems even though the final whistle was greeted by relief rather than glee from most of the home crowd.

United – We were awful against Oldham and other than winning the game tonight there was little to distinguish between the two performances. We began well and seemed to be playing ok 11 v 11. We got in front again as we did in that game but then oddly against 10 seemed to stop playing in the same way we had. Once again we failed to press home our advantage and struggled to create many chances all game. We had loads of possession and knocked it about across the back and in midfield but as soon as we got into the final third we looked absolutely clueless. The passing was poor, the link up play non-existent and the final ball hopeless. We actually never really looked like scoring. Sure we won and we kept a clean sheet but we have to better than that if we are serious about getting out of this division. Many may point to the long unbeaten run but it masks some really poor performances and let us be honest if we do not make improvements we are going to hit a bad spell (tough games v Pompey, Swindon, Stevenage and MK Dons coming up) and start to fall down a very tight league. The performances have been poorer than last season overall albeit with inferior personnel. I suppose the division is not as strong and we have been solid at the back (Long making 2 great saves in last 2 games but little other chances for opponents) and look well organised and resolute.

We have no real out and outpace or trickery out wide and although Blackman and Kitson have done ok we do not look like blowing teams away up top in the same way as we did last season (Evans a different league). The full backs don’t get forward and Doyle and McDonald are a long way off last years standard. To be affair the central defence and keeper (Howard or Long) have been more solid this year and we look a lot tighter (1-0’s aplenty confirm this). Williams and Hill have been 2 of our best players in recent weeks. That says it all.

The football on the whole is pretty poor this season and we look slow and unadventurous. I did not mind us keeping the ball and knocking it about (especially against 10 men) but we still looked slow and ponderous and at times needed to quicken the pace when we got in their half. Players do not move out of their ‘areas’ and we seem to play way too many square or backward balls. It was really not good enough to barely have a shot on goal against 10 men and a relatively ordinary side at that. McAllister and Flynn were really poor and Cofie not much better. McDonald looks like he is just going through the motions at time. I feel Miller looks sharp in the limited time he had had and deserves a start in some area of the field. I may sound incredibly negative when we are what 14 games unbeaten but it was pretty dire tonight and we have to do much better if we are serious about finishing in the top two.

Next week will be a far tougher test with many ex Blades coming back and even though Pompey have been hit and miss you get the feeling it will be much harder than tonight. We have a week off now to get everyone fresh and at it and hopefully in front of the cameras we can finally come out give a convincing performance at the Lane as there had hardly been one this season.

Walsall – Seen bits and pieces of them this season and they have definitely played some good football, getting it down and passing it and surprised some teams. Tonight they actually were slow out of the blocks and even before the red card were sitting quite deep. After they went down to ten men and went behind they seemed shell shocked initially and of course had to reorganise with changes on and off the field. They did settle down and finally came into it and had the good chance that easily could have levelled it.

They did have to concede a lot of possession but defended well and restricted us to any real chances. They probably did not deserve a draw but if they had got it; like Oldham you would not have been surprised if they had nicked a draw. They did not pile men forward and of course were caught between not throwing men forward and losing more goals and keeping it tight to have a chance of getting something. They did not disgrace themselves and were well in the game despite creating few chances after the break (one run and shot that flashed wide was about it). Credit to them for plugging away and taking the game right to the end. Cannot have been easy with 10 for long and they worked really hard and Holden really cost them any chance of really making it a proper game conceding a goal/penalty in one fell swoop. Hard to probably assess them with the numerical disadvantage they had all game. As for players I felt Chambers worked hard in the middle, butler defended well against Kitson and Blackman and Cuvelier showed some nice touches. They had little up front but had to play essentially 1 up top for the most part. Former Blade Andy Taylor was distinctly average but was put under little pressure from either player he was up against.

Long 7.5/10 – He did not have that much to do in the game save for one shot flashing past him in the second half and a few routine catches but the one real chance Walsall had he made a brilliant reaction save to push it away and then got up to ensure the rebound was not converted. Now made 3 or 4 outstanding saves in the last 3 games and if he carries on then the scouts will be taking note very quickly.

Hill 7.5/10 – Continued his excellent form. Thought he was probably our best player again (of a bad bunch). He defended very well all game, winning headers and making clearances and interceptions. He has been very consistent and at the moment he is probably one of the first names on the teamsheet and it is hard to make a case for Collins to come back in. Never thought I would say that!

McMahon 5.5/10 – Another so – so performance. His touch and passing was inconsistent and he lumped the ball forward way too much and often he is wasteful in possession. I have said it in many other reports but he has really disappointed me since he signed. He has not even done the basics very well and defensively he makes mistakes and in possession he is very sloppy.

Maguire 6/10 – Thought he had an ordinary game and at times was quite sloppy. In fact his touch, concentration and passing under little to no pressure was not really right all game. Too many times he just lumped it or played it diagonally. He also was not assured when getting the ball and seemed to play a lot of loose passes.

Williams 7/10 – He was alright for the most part and one of our better players. Not spectacular and did little of note going forward but he defended ok and I cannot recall many bad mistakes or really poor passes. Sure he had a skewed shot and a cross that was over hit but he kept to his limitations and did not try and do anything too silly. As a defender he did what he had to and others in front let him down although got beat badly once when they nearly scored.

Flynn 5/10 – Not the best to say the least. His touch was ok in general play and he always gets it down and brings others into play but the number of times he had the ball one on one and he bottled even trying to go at his man. Seems to lack any kind of conviction he can beat his man. His corners and set plays were utterly appalling. He could not beat the first man and failed to get it more than 2 feet off the ground on 4 or 5 occasions. He then hit one straight over the top so conscious he was to not to hit the first man again. Not a good night overall like many others.

McDonald 5.5/10 – Another who is not hitting the heights of last season despite the unbeaten run. His passing is a real mixed bag and at times he still looks off the pace. Very slow to react to things and seems to think he has all the time in the world when in reality he needs to be stronger and quicker. His ability is better than nearly all of the other players in the division but at times he seems to have been coasting this season

Doyle 6/10 – Another who has had better nights. We had extra numbers in the middle of the field but at times it did not look like this. He broke play up ok but his passing to was mixed and we never really dictated the play like we should have done.

McAllister 4/10 – Cannot remember anything he did really. He did make one good header across the box that no one got on the end of but in general play he looks like a fish out of water. Clearly not a winger but even then he should try and exert himself more but the games just pass him by. Made it into the second half but could have been given the hook at half time.

Blackman 6.5/10 – Thought he did work hard and tried to chase the ball down but nothing really came off for him and the ball just keep ricocheting around. Just never really totally clicked for him and Kitson. He was not the worse player but had few chances on goal or even created anything (although had little service). Takes a good penalty even if at some stage the keeper will just stand up and make him look daft!

Kitson 6.5/10 – Like Blackman he did try and get hold of the ball and work across the front line but the ball never quite stuck. Still showed a few neat touches and you always felt like if we did anything it would come through him. Was quick to react to bad back pass to win the penalty. Committed numerous fouls before he was finally rightly booked.

Subs

Cofie – Brought on for McAllister to try and give us another outlet but as the game continued to be frustrating he never really got into it. The ball bounced off him in the same way it did many of the other players. Not sure how he fits in as we have 4 or 5 strikers in front of him (even Porter and Cresswell) and I don’t think he is a winger.

Porter - Held the ball up a few times and made a few flicks ons with his aerial strength that led to a few half chances to Miller.

Miller – Looked lively as he played on the shoulders of the defence. Had a few half chances with his quick feet as he linked up with Porter well. I would consider playing him on the right instead of McAllister as surely at home Miller can offer more?

Officials – The referee (George Eltringham) had a relatively easy game to officiate. He probably should have booked one of theirs for a poor, late tackle earlier in the game but chose to let it go. After this the sending off and penalty were easy decisions and nobody from Walsall complained. He rightly booked Kitson for persistent fouling and I cannot remember many other decisions that were particularly bad by the referee. I do think he was not helped by the linesman who basically never made a decision all night long. They may as well have been sat with me. The one on the South Stand side in particular in the first half seemed unable to make any decisions at all as he just kept shrugging his shoulders instead of making any decisions!

Crowd – Very quiet atmosphere. Walsall brought maybe 200 fans and it was a really flat crowd throughout. There was definite frustration as many expected we would score 3 or 4 goals after the penalty but it never really happened. As the game went on you could feel the fear as many felt instead of going on and winning comfortably, we could actually chuck away another 2 points. In the end we dominated possession but the crowd were right to be frustrated as we created little to nothing. There were even some boos at the end. That may be harsh but 75 minutes v 10 men and to barely have a shot of note on goal or even create any chances is poor really. The overall entertainment level was sorely lacking and fans could not say they got much value for money. I suppose a win is a win but performances like that and the crowds will dip even lower than the 15,744 of tonight.

That clown Flynn must be laughing all the way to the bank.

I don't what the hell he is but he isn't a football player.

We're crap, i think we've all realised that by now. We're hanging on by our nads every game. It's painful to watch. We need Cofie out of the club. Nothing personal, but he's a waste of time and it's obvious Danny is under some kind of instruction from above to give him game time. He isn't a winger, so he's been unlucky in that respect that he gets asked to play there cos we have better options up front. Hard to knock Flynn cos he's frankly the best we've got. We are desperate, yes desperate, for a pacy winger or at least someone who can play out wide. If we don't get one in, we aren't going to keep grinding out wins. We're fortunate to be in a pretty good position. So far we've shown strong determination to get the points we have. Gallagher was crap, but still better than what we currently have. Never mind looking for a goalie who may never get on the pitch, we should be pulling out all the stops to find a replacement. Whether that means moving out 5 reserve players on loan, blackmailing the football league's accountants, or sacking the tea lady.

we sold quinn.... many people cheered that but we lost our outlet on the left that could also cut inside and also chip a few goals in. so we win a lot of games 1-0 we could be top on saturday! chelsea, man city, sheffield united.... only unbeaten teams out of 92... in our division, tranmere have played out of their skins and are dipping, stevenage are keeping up with us but we are the form team in the division! flynn is crap ndlovu? he looked fantastic without mcmahon behind him vs notts county, he now lacks a lowton behind him in the league (another player who chipped in a few goals). cofie i would agree, a bad mistake other than that stop flapping people! collins should be reinstated though, hill to LB and him back in as he is likely to score goals!

As bad as that huh?

We're two points off first.

yep we are, and we should consider ourselves lucky that we've papered over the cracks so well. and act now to solve the gaping hole of quality in midfield, not wait until we slip down the league and then do it. when i said we're crap i don't mean mid-table or anything, we're just as crap as all the other contenders. it's the weakest division in years. the league is there for for the taking and it's bloody frustrating that we seem to just be content to hang on every game. i just don't want to see us piss up this good start by being complacent thinking we can just plod along scraping 1-0 wins every game. cos it ain't gonna happen. the best time to improve your squad is before everything goes tits up. it's not like it's a big secret we haven't replaced quinn. we can't expect to get away with it all season.

Chalrton won more matches 1-0 last season than any other team.

Long may it continue for us.

Was a game of two halves, the first half lasted about 15 mins and we passed them off the park and looked awesome until we scored.
The second half went on for about 75 mins yawn.
Great save Longy.

Fair report Deadbat thank you. It's like Danny Wilson said on the radio, we aren't the team if last season, he has to make do with what he's got. We lost some very good players last season. We are in the thid division when all is said and done. It is blooming boring to watch though at moment.

Agree that Hill and Williams were our best outfield players, and it shows how poor a performance it was that that was the case. We seem to have lost the ability we had last year to pass the ball accurately and in a controlled manner in midfield. The loss of Quinn and Willo are the reasons, as McDonald now doesn't have outlet balls available to other players with a good touch.

Highlight of the night for me was Long's fantastic save, real class. Might have well have gone home after that...

We dont play until Monday so cant be top on Sat. (BUT I DO GET WHAT YOU ARE SAYING)

Thanks Deadbat. Entertaining is all well and good but 3 points are more important

We've had to cut our cloth, for the wage cap in this league,or do we want a transfer embargo like Swinden.?Are we worse than last season with the players we've had to let go 2 of which seemed to be going 1 way or the other Evan's Willo, yes, yes we are,the football may not be pretty but so far it's effective.I don't look at our fixture's and worry bout who were playing next, they'll be worried bout us cause they know if we get in front then we are very difficult to score against [ how many did preston get last night], will take 1-0 all season long, just like Arsenal did is'nt there a song about that?Or like Leicester did under O'neil a few season's ago, this maybe what you have to watch [ seldom I get a chance to get over now ] but when we get promoted the history books will say champions beside our name not how we won it ,did Chelsea deserve to beat Barca last year in the semi's NO, but hearing them on the radio last night, being beaten european champions, not how they won it was all that was being said.one of the few teams showing consistancey, and would we have taken playing like this last year for promotion instead of the vile, course we would have, or maybe we got spoiled last year. As our old song goes we aint got a barrel of money[ all together now]

Thanks for the report Db. I couldn't get to the match last night so was looking forward to reading this.

Some very strange and negative comments on here. It sounded like we made hard work of playing against the ten men but that's not unusual for the Blades. A win is a win and the unbeaten run continues. We are two points off the top and I would have taken that at this stage.

Looking at previously promoted teams it seems you don't necessarily have to be a great team to go up or put in good performances every week. It's a case of staying organised defensively and grinding out results when you're not playing well. It's much easier to do that in League One than it is in the Championship and PL. We're doing fine.

The comment about Flynn is ridiculous.

flynn scuttles around a lot without a lot of end product.. he's like quinn but right footed.. in fact i call him 'check back' because he always stops and checks back
i can't see how we can move hill to accomodate anyone.. he's our best player..
we simply have no pace on the wings and no penetration.. five passes across the back four, give it to KMac and hope he'll pull a rabbit out of a hat isn't passing football.. in fact olle needs to reinstate the crime against hoof thread
it was sickening to see four players on the half way line for 'our' corner when they only had ten men

blackwell esque

it's the same argument we had three years ago.. me and a few other purists will say.. 'yeah but the play is crap, in the long run it doesn't really get us anywhere' and results based types will say 'yeah but we're third' .. it was the excuse for the worst dirge ever seen at the lane.. it got us nowhere.. in fact in the end it got us relegated.. (the similarities between this and the blackwell playoff team are uncanny)..

so we'll probably end up third .. lose the playoff.. lose harry and kmac in the off season and then plummet again next season

It was a poor game. We were the better (by a considerable margin in my view) of two poor teams. We won. The defence we fine (keeping them down to 1 real chance), the rest were ordinary (at best).

If you didn't see it or if you're a "only the result matters" kind of person then I'm sure you were ecstatic. If you go to the game hoping to be entertained (even just a little bit) then it was dissappointing.
When I lie on my death bed regailing (boring) family and friends of the great times I had watching the mighty Blades, this particular game will not get a mention.

If you consider this "strangely negative" then so be it. It's just how it was.

the thing is pat that we didn't make hard work of it.. we took the rest of the day off.. i may as well have gone home after the 15th minute.. put it this way.. if walsall had been relegation candidates via goal difference then they might have looked into the game as irregular.. seeing as we didn't bother attacking for the best part of 75 minutes

perhaps maccabe had a couple of grand on one-nil ;)

The comparisons with Blackwell are unfair. He actually favours a rigid formation built on defence and stopping the opposition.

Meanwhile Wilson has just lost all bar one of his team's creative talent - Willo, Lowton, Quinn and Ched. You could also add LJF to that as it was the overlapping of our fullbacks which made us so hard to stop last season. KMac is a lost soul out there - the movement around him is almost non-existent.

I just hope Chappell comes back from Burton as a genuine first teamer, that LJF is back for Chrimbo, and that Santa brings us a new winger.

and the way we played in contrast was.. ermm?? :D
seriously though.. some good points there Denver.. summed my thoughts up nicely

Walsall's manager on Long's clearance from McDonald's backpass:

"The referee got our red card right but I felt it should have been 10 against 10 because their keeper went through Will Grigg,” said Smith, whose side are now winless in six games.
"It looked like a red card to me but I don’t really expect it at Bramall Lane.
“We had the same last year when Matt Lowton went through Mat Sadler and we got nothing, so I didn’t really expect anything this year.
“Will got to the ball first and the goalkeeper went over the top and caught him.
“He went with a straight leg and it was one of those leg-breaking challenges. Fortunately Will came out of it OK, but unfortunately their goalkeeper stayed on and made a great save just after it.
“It should have been a penalty and a red card but sometimes you just don’t expect to get them.”

Pretty much spot on Deadbat. Last night I was at the Lane and I saw the game almost like you saw it. I do disagree with a few of the ratings, but on the whole I thought it was an awful game of football. We were poor and just about grinded out a result. It was a disappointing United performance and a proper bore fest. Still, we kept a clean sheet and took all 3 points.

The evening started well for me, up at the Harlequin at half 4. Took in the Dev Cat and Kelham Island Tavern, before a quick one at the Rutland. Then to the match .....

Early doors there looked a massive gulf in class. We looked comfortable in possession and Walsall looked nervous and sat back. We made all the early running and controlled the game. Everything was going through Kitson, K Mac was getting on the ball and it was almost embarassing how much better we looked than them. Then we scored.

After the goal we continued with our ascendancy. However Walsall sneaked back into it. For all our possession and passing we looked toothless. We controlled the game, but in the final third were hopeless. We had no width and were just wasteful in possession. Walsall clearly had a game plan and stuck to it. As the game went on and we looked more impotent, they grew in confidence. They soaked up our pressure and hit us on the counter attack. They were unlucky not to get a goal and only a super save from Long stopped them.

2nd half was much different. After a good opening spell, United went to pieces. Walsall had a good spell for 15 minutes and during that time we looked like the away side that was down to 10 men. I was really impressed with Walsall actually (one of thje points I disagree with DB on). I think they are a decent side. They workjed really hard to say theyu had 10 men. They pressed us continually and gave Doyle and K Mac no time on the ball. They defended pretty well and only allowed us to shoot from distance. Despite playing with 10 men, they showed passion, energy and commitment. They had chances (Long save first half and they missed a good chance 2nd half when their striker dragged wide with the defence at sea and Long beaten) and will probably feel they might have come away with something. We will play a lot worse sides that them this season.

It was a relief when the final whistle went. Despite us looking a bit jittery late on, we did not look like conceding in the last 10-15 mins. It was weird afterwards as there were barely any cheers on the kop. It was flat and a lot of people were frustrated at how shit we were.

Crimes against football

Where do I start? The whole thing was a crime against football. I would single out Ryan Flynn though. Perhaps a tad harsh, but he has ability and that makes it all the more frustrating. He never attacked his man once last night and turns inside all the time. His cutting back is really frustrating. Worse than this his set piece delivery were terrible. He must have taken a dozen corners and not beat the first man on one. Yet twice from free kicks he overhit the ball straight out. You could also single out Harry Maguire whose cross ball hoofs are really frustrating. Maguire looked a bit lethargic last night and I got fed up of his diagonal long balls.

Crimes against hoof

Hmmmm ..... Walsall perhaps. They passed the ball well, showed energy and pressed heard when they did not have the ball. Anyone who was there last night will know it is difficult for me to give the prestigous award to any Blades players.

Men of steel

George Long, Matt Hill and Dave Kitson were Olle's men of steel last night. Long made a cracking save and we habe him to thank for the 2 extra points. Hill was solid again and probably our best defender. I actually think that we missed Collins last night though and thought Williams struggled a little. I would be tempted to put Collins back in and switch Hill to left back. Kitson was the best player on the pitch for me (another point where I disagree with Deadbat). If you had said to a neutral, which player has played above this level for most opf their career then they would have named him. He was a constaint nuisance. The ball seems to stick to him. He is also cool in possession, has a good touch and is dangerous. He was unlucky not to score (his header where he was judged to have fouled the defender) and I have not seen anyone lead a Blades forward line as well since Hulse or Shipperley.

Lack of width

One of the main problems for me last night was a lack of width. The strikers did ok (in terms of holding the ball up) but we had no creativity in midfield. K Mac was poor last night, Flynn had an off night and McAllister was just rubbish. Doyle was ok, but their midfield pressed us very hard. They put pressure on Doyle and K Mac and gave us little time and space. We did have space out wide, but McAllister is not a winger (he was completely innefective) and Flynn cut inside too much. Also the full backs did not support enough. Williams did try and get forward, but Flynn did not use him well. McMahon is so unaambitious it is untrue. Whenever he gets forward he just stops running and crosses from deep. He is so frustrating. 3 or 4 times he was given the ball out wide and we were willing him to run on. Every time he stopped, put his foot on it and crossed from deep.

Strikers

I though Kitson was excellent last night (we need to sign him up until the end of the season NOW!) but Blackman was pretty poor. He did not get that much service and worked fairly hard, but it is his strikers instinct I question. Several times we need a fox in the box and there was no one. In the first half Kitson headed down brilliantly into the danger area and Blackman was out wide somehwere. Similarly when McAllister headed back across the six yard area and Blackman was nowhere. This might just be down to Kitson and Blackman being too similar. Blackman likes to pull out wide and drop deep and is not an out and out stiker. When the ball was put in the mixer on several occassion and no was one there, I could not help thinking that Miller might have been there.

I would like to seee Miller start with Kitson. Miller did more in 20 mins than Blackman did all game. He looked dangerous and really stretched their defence. Walsall were tiring at this point, but Miller went through a couple of times and could have scored (on one occasion he forced a decent save, another he scewed his shot out for a throw and another he was tackeld). But miller looked sharp and dangerous. I have to say porter did really well for the last 10 mins as well and showed a good understanding with Miller. Porter took a lot of pressure of us by holding up the ball, winning headers and linking up well.

Ale

Safe to say that in my quest for real ale and proper football, I found the former and not the latter. Best ales were a pale ale called Deathly Pale (a light, hoppy, flowety and citrus pale ale with a slight kick and bitter aftertaste) and Thornbridge Envelode (a knock your block off Porter with coffee, malt and choclate flavours). Also had a delicious Jaipur (which I am sure you will all know) and a lovely Old Moor Porter (Acorn brewery).

Olle's final thoughts

I just do not know what to think. We were absolutely crap last night. Make no mistakes, we were piss poor. We really struggled and were not convincing. However we kept a clean sheet and got the points. Now we sit in 3rd and are breathing down the necks of the top 2. We have some tough games coming up in November and before Christmas, which will ultimately tell us whether we are top 2 material. I can see what Wilson is trying to do in making us difficult to beat. Charlton got promoted last season by winning a lot of games 1 nil. They were unspectacular and rock solid. A bit like us this season. The division is gash, so perhaps we can keep griding out results. If we continue toplay like this it is really important we remain tight and do not commit any silly errors. However I do feel that we are riding our luck a little and unless we change something (more width, better finishing, more conviction, a bit of pace etc) then our form might dip. For example had it not been for 2 excellent saves by Long, we might have drawn the last 2 games.

That clown Flynn must be laughing all the way to the bank.

I don't what the hell he is but he isn't a football player.

One word ''Bollox'' after he was sent off v the cavemen from scunny everyone could'nt wait to get i'm back I'll judge him over a season not 1 game, said it in a previous thread think he'll do better than last year and that's all ya can ask. From any player,i.e Collins 3 season's ago rightly ridden rock solid,Hill last year and? look at his performance's this year so far, so again 1 word 'Bollox''

Anyone else think K Mac needs a rocket up his arse?? He was really disappointing last night and seemed to be going through the motions. He almost gave away a goal by being sloppy. I watched him and he never apologised to Long, despite the young keeper bailing him out. He arrogantly turned his back and jogged up the field whilst their striker was getting treatment. He looked nonchalant and disinterested for most of the night to me. I realise that we are putting pressure on him to do everything and his teams mates are often not on the same wave lenght, put though last night he had a real stinker. 2nd half him and Doyle were bystanders and got over run.

The result is paramount. I'm happy to be entertained but if we win I feel no cause to complain. I'm not saying you cant have your cake as well but its unlikely you'll get it when you're supporting a third division side. It's a crap league and you're not going to get much in the way of quality or consistency. I'll take the win. I still cant grasp how a club which has achieved so little post war has such high expectations attached to it.

the thing is pat that we didn't make hard work of it.. we took the rest of the day off.. i may as well have gone home after the 15th minute.. put it this way.. if walsall had been relegation candidates via goal difference then they might have looked into the game as irregular.. seeing as we didn't bother attacking for the best part of 75 minutes

perhaps maccabe had a couple of grand on one-nil ;)

They won the game.....not sure what else to say. If its a lack of entertainment that's the problem then that's fair enough but I genuinely think that side of things will improve over the season. This team is still trying to gel I think and has gaping holes in one or two positions.

Which is the left back, hill or Williams?

I mentioned this on another thread, but I thought the lad at left back was very good going forward, but on numerous occasions he showed himself to be completely inept at defending, he got covered a lot by Harry and the other centre half. Thankfully we were rarely troubled by Walsall in the final third.

I thought Flynn linked up well with the left back, but were so predictable when the opposition know we will always go down the left, it's time to mix it up.

McAlistair worked hard down the right and was wrongly replaced by the uninterested Cofie.

KMac played much better last night than in the other two games this season. We were poor upfront - kitson and Blackman don't seem t work that well together. I thought the final pairing of Miller and Porter looked a more dangerous pairing as Miller knew exactly how to play off porter and tried to get in behind the back four.

Cannot undertand their manager at all. I saw it completely different. the ball was played back, short, by McDonald but Long got there and wellied it away. As he kicked it he caugh the Walsall man.

There was never any question it was a foul or red card. Maybe if an outfield play had done that and gone through after he kicked it but keepers can come kick, punch and knock away and always get away with contact with players after their clearances.

Their player certainly did not get to the ball first as if he had why would Long have kicked it; why did their striker not kick it goalwards first?

Anyone else see it differently.

“It should have been a penalty and a red card but sometimes you just don’t expect to get them.”

difficult to say mate.. sometimes i can't tell them apart :)
kmac's problem Olle is that he has no one to pass to.. the fullbacks simply don't make runs into space.. macmahon..currently on the short list for new scapegoat ;) is usually miles behind him

Agree Pat,sport is a results driven game, imagine if we played the opposition of the park week in ,week out, and yet continued to get beaten, our fans being understanding souls would be entertained and happy that we were being relegated and nobody would want this manager, or Blackie,or Adams,or robson sacked, and we would all be glad to bump along the bottom with the rest of the shite like Toytown and Chaffield ,er no I would'nt get the fook out of this league or it's going to destroy our club,Gillingham,or Scum Leeds, take your pick in who you want to vist, not saying Ollie et-al should'nt say what they say, when were shit, say were shit.,just look at bigger picture [ promotion ] is all I'm saying.U.T.B.
