Sheffield United got off the board with a point at home to Rochdale but then needed a late Billy Sharp strike to salvage something after Andy Cannon had profited from poor goalkeeping from George Long. After creating a lot of chances in the previous two games, the Blades struggled to make much headway in a poor performance and looked sluggish all over the field. Whist Dale did not trouble the home side much they got in front just before the break and then seemed to have held off the United challenge with the Blades seemingly running out of ideas. However, Hussey’s free kick was met by Sharp and United had their first goal. An expected late grandstand finish did not materialise and the home fan left frustrated at the performance and the result.

For the third successive game Wilder had named an unchanged team with new loan signing Harry Chapman on the bench. Rochdale fielded former Blades Harrison McGahey and Nathan Mendez Laing as they also sought their first point.

The early stages did not see the chances that United had created in the first two games and began with both sides feeling each other out. Lillis smothered when the ball ran loose after Fleck had fed in Clarke and then O’Connell had to nip in and intercept at the other end. Duffy had a shot wide before Cannon did likewise. Clarke was winning many of the aerial balls but little was dropping. Rochdale had a nice spell of play gaining territory in the United half and had a great opportunity inside 15 minutes. After some hesitancy in the midfield the Blades lost the ball and after a ricochet Wilson and Brayford did not react and Henderson was in. Long did well to come out and make a save at his feet.

Fleck was the first player into the book after he won a free kick! He was tripped but the referee adjudged that as he fell he then went into another Rochdale player. It seemed an odd decision to say the least.

Rochdale were having more of the ball and United were now struggling to get a foothold and the game became scrappy. It seemed like the game was drifting towards a stalemate when a mistake gave the visitors the lead. Henderson hit a long range shot but it should have been comfortable for Long but the keeper saw it squirm out of his grasp and Cannon pounced on it and turned the ball home.

After the break United tried to go long at every opportunity and were looking for Clarke and feeding off knock downs but nothing was dropping. The crowd started to became frustrated as Rochdale soaked up United’s attacks quite easily. Dale had not really had an attack in the second half but as with Bolton the previous week, with a lead, they needn’t attack with any real purpose.

Chapman came on for Done who had not been in the game but it came from the other flank that a half chance came. Duffy had one good cross and run which Clarke headed wide but it was a difficult chance. Scougall then replaced Duffy wide right as United sought to find a lift. With the game entering the final quarter of an hour; Sharp tried to force the play chasing down a number of players in a spell before United won a free kick out wide for a foul on the United striker.

The free kick came over from Hussey and with half the Rochdale defence coming out and half staying at home SHARP expertly turned the ball high into the net. It was a moment of relief more than anything else. Buoyed by this the crowd came alive and United sense they could turn the game around and get an unlikely winner.

Andrew had a rare chance for Rochdale but headed wide before Sharp had half-hearted appeals for a penalty. Basham then had a chance as the game entered three minutes of stoppage time but after advancing well opted to stop and lay off rather than shoot or carry on progressing. The final whistle came soon after as United fans left the Lane with more questions than answers in terms of how this side may be able to put together any kind of promotion challenge. Of course it may be early in the season but it has been another disappointing start for the Blades who face Southend at the Lane on Tuesday evening ahead of a very difficult trip to the Den.

United – We did ok for the first two games and easily could have won both games with better finishing but we did not do that and lost two games. Today we were poor for long spells and did not even had the fast start of those games but nicked a point. For long periods it looked like a loss though. We lacked purpose and seemed to struggle to penetrate all game. Lacking pace and players who can beat men, it means we have to play through teams but often we opted to go long and play off Clarke. There was an emphasis on getting it into the final third quicker but we did not have men around players when we did. I am unsure even the team knows what they are doing yet in terms of purpose or pattern. We had a better shape than we did under Adkins and the whole side played further up the field and we did do better off the ball than we did last season pressing higher up and winning more loose balls – although we started to sit off and lose midfield towards end of first half.

I just felt overall the side lacked any real clarity in how it wanted to play. We never got it wide and when we did then came back inside with little movement. Our play on the ball was too stagnant and players did not move off the ball when we had it. Watching us on throws and corners was embarrassing as we just stood there. Nobody moved! The corners were just hit to the far post and hoped Clarke or one of the centre backs may flick something on. I am not sure what they have worked on in training but we did not seem to have a plan on dead plays – until we scored with a great delivery from Hussey and finish from Sharp.

It was a poor game overall though and we looked no better than a very ordinary Rochdale side who will not finish any higher than mid-way for me. We have to do much better than that or we will be no higher ourselves. We did not have the tempo and pace we showed in spells in previous game and it all become a bit hit and hope. Other than few half chances, Duffy with a shot pulled wide and a Clarke header it was scraps really. Still if we don’t toss goals away then it is much easier. We do this and we are under pressure.

It was an awful mistake from Long gifted them a goal in a nothing game and after that they had two banks in defence and midfield and we had no idea how to break them down. We started lumping it up to Clarke who won a fair but had no really help around him as Sharp had another poor game until he came to life in the last spell. We had nothing out wide from Done and Duffy. The former has done nothing and surely will lose his place now to the new lad Chapman. Duffy has shown glimpses but barely seen him beat his man (one good run and cross second half apart) and looks to lack pace and aggression. In midfield Fleck had a good first half hour but then he seemed to disappear. Basham did a few bits and pieces but is woefully slow on and off the ball. He is pitifully weak for a big man and another we must upgrade on. I don’t buy this big un/little un talk. Basham is big but does not win headers or tackles so what does it matter – he does not even offer a threat at set plays. I felt the defence was ok. The two centre backs were solid enough – Andrew gave them a few moments to worry about but they had few rea chances save for the Henderson one that bounced quite luckily.

Once we scored you felt we may go on and win but it never really happened and we did not create any more chances. I was really disappointed overall today. All the talk from Wilder of a pressing and harrying side playing up on opponents and having a go etc was a long way off. It was in reality more of the same from last season. We urgently need more players. Basham and Done are two weak links that need replacing but out of the new players Hussey and Duffy have to do much better too. I would even say Brayford and Sharp have began season really poorly too. There are too many ordinary players/performances and we look a long, long way off any kind of promotion side I am afraid.

Today I think many Blades came out very low. We had half a new team (maybe it will take time to gel), a new manager and it was same really poor level if performance with little excitement. It was boring for the most part. We still lack power and pace and invention. We have different players but on that evidence little has changed. Big improvements required and fast. The club seems stuck in a rut and it seems whatever we do can’t things moving. We have to address the pace and power aspect of the side. We are a soft touch and lack drive all over the side. We play like we are wearing scuba outfits (the old fashioned diving ones) and the type of player we have signed has still not addressed this – some have been ok but I think we are just glad not to be seeing Hammond, Collins, McEveley and Sammon!

I just hope we can change things around in level of play but as I say you cannot give players power and pace overnight and those weaknesses will continue to haunt us as we look a set of ordinary plodders.

Rochdale – Ordinary side who were well drilled and organised but a side you should be putting away really. They played a few pockets of football and had spells where quicker and sharper midfielders started to control things but they were as sloppy as us in possession. They can say they as many, if not more chances than us over the game with the best chance a Henderson one on one and then a few half chances each way. For an away side to come to the Lane and restrict us to barely a chance they will be happy. Former Blade McGahey had a decent game actually but I am not getting carried away by one game and feel we were quite right to release him.

Wilder pointed to the fact Keith Hill has been there 5 years and has a point but with the resources they have they are still punching above themselves. They have a small squad and rely on not getting many injuries and superior fitness/conditioning than others but they do have a go. Wilder said they defended behind the ball but I felt to be fair to them they only did that after they scored. You would expect most teams to do the same. Up to that point they had attacked as much as us.

Opponent man of the match: McGahey had a decent game but his centre back partner Canavan was very good and kicked/cleared the ball all game. However, the lad Allen in midfield stood out for me. Competitive, neat and tidy on the ball, he always looked to turn defence into attack. Good player at this level.

Opponent Weak link: Not sure they had a weak link really; they were all committed and well drilled. They worked hard and although lacked a bit of quality. The lad Andrew put himself about but was quite clumsy on the ball.

SUFC Player Ratings –

Long 2/10 – A game where he had nothing to do, he managed to almost drop one cross and they nearly scored and then pushed out a simple shot into the path of the opponent to score. He could have thrown two caps on it and made a cup of tea. Even after the error he was so slow to get up. Awful goalkeeping. Second half he punched a few again and his kicking was erratic as normal. We need to upgrade here I feel as I have very little confidence in him and not sure a new defence does either. If we have chance to get Lee Grant as reported then we should act as he is a decent keeper and would be more than enough at this level.

Brayford 4/10 – Our poorest defender. Not alert enough and looks so sluggish at the moment in everything he does. He was ball watching three times second half and their winger nearly got in. Got forward a few times but his crosses are always low and slow on the floor and easy to read. He never puts them in with any pace or beats the first few men. Something does not seem right with him at the moment – just a gut feeling. Not sure whether it is his fitness or whether he does fancy a move but he is a million miles for the dynamic, all action inspiration we saw a few years ago. If a club offered any kind of money (with his reputed wages) you would take it.

Hussey 5.5/10 – Defensively still not certain at all. He gives his man way too much time and takes an age to do things sometimes. He is extremely left footed to the point that he span around twice just to play it with his left. His set plays were mixed. Many were over played to the far post but did put a few good ones in and set up Sharp with an excellent one. Needs to be more assertive in his defending and worry when he faces tricky/quick wingers.

Wilson 7/10 – He has been ok so far. He has not been tested as every side we have played has often only had one main striker with one playing off so remains to be seen what he is like against pace and power (ditto for O’Connell). He has been ok on the ball but sometimes rushed a bit too much as clearly wants to follow Wilder’s instructions of getting the ball forward. So far though he has been steady enough.

O’Connell 7/10- Like what I have seen of him so far. I criticised him for losing a key header on Tuesday in lead up to winner but overall in the three games he has looked good. Decent on the ball, good in the tackle and not as slow as you think despite top heavy type looking frame. He wants to get us on the front foot and tried to carry the ball forward when he could.

Basham 5/10 – Another nothing sort of game. Sums up united for me for last few seasons. Slow and average. He got his foot in a few times but often he came out second best on 50/50 challenges. He runs around a lot without really achieving anything and as he lacks mobility it means Fleck has to cover around for him if teams break. I think we really need to look at this area. He seems a decent enough pro who tried hard but effort alone is not seeing us win the key midfield battles. If I was Wilder I would be imploring him to use his frame and out himself about far more. A bloke behind me called him a ‘fairy’. Not very PC but I think we understood his point. The only argument I could make for him and Fleck who was not much better was that we missed them both out a lot and were knocking it over the top.

Fleck 5/10 – Excellent start to the game again as he got his foot in and tried to get us moving. Decent on both feet and good range of passing. However, like with United he has not taken these good starts on and second half I did not notice him much. Coventry fans said he does fade from games and was subbed a lot. Whilst he has not been subbed yet, he has tired and faded sadly.

Duffy 5.5/10 – He is one I felt and still feel could be a good signing. A tricky wide man who works hard and can create openings. So far he has not really done that yet and too many times what he tried did not come off. He has been neat and tidy and not hidden and did have one run and cross but too often has been crowded out and not really gone at players. I thought he would run at players more and turn defenders around but seems to have played safe too much for me. Also another that tired quite badly. Need more from him.

Done 4/10 – Another nothing sort of game. He did not get the ball much but when he did he seemed to drift inside or not really go at defenders. The Done we liked when he first came (ok was up top) ran at players and made them turn. He has not done that even in this unnatural wide position. I can barely recall many moments when he had the ball or linked with others. Hauled off on the hour. He may be looking at a spell on the side lines Tuesday if Wilder gives Chapman a full debut which I expect.

Clarke 6.5/10 – I thought he did ok with no service from wide at all. He was given a lot of long punts to control and chase for. He won a lot of headers and held it up well but sometimes it never really led to anything. Not sure that was necessarily his fault. He lacks pace and movement and plays a lot with his back to goal and that can make us a bit predictable up top as Sharp does not have the pace either He looked very tired near the end (shown on kick off when he took an age to get back) and maybe McNulty could have come on but I guess we had some momentum at that stage and hoping he may win a knock down or get a headed chance. Needs to get fitter and work on his partnership with Sharp which has not clicked yet.

Sharp 6/10 – Up to his goal he may have been looking at a 4/5 mark. He continued his poor form from the opening few games lacking sharpness and not really getting into the game. He did not link with Clarke being too far off him and seemed frustrated as we went long quite a bit after trying to play it neat and tidy to begin with. Then harried on a few challenges, scored a great goal and suddenly he was leading the line, linking and looking the player we saw last season. Got to get to that level from the start Tuesday.

Subs

Chapman – Came on but struggled to have any impact really and the ball kept getting away from him. The game became quite congested and we could not get him wide. He came looking for the ball and had a few touches but it was all a bit scruffy from everyone at that stage.

Scougall – Wilder said he gave us a lift but I saw nothing from him; as I haven’t in either of the first two games when he played albeit it in limited time. Still as with Chapman was a hard game to get into I suppose. A few times the ball came off him too easily – his control was really poor. Not a winger but as I have said unsure where he plays. One we need to move on for me.

Manager – Wilder 3/10 – He will have been desperately disappointed with the performance today. It was poor and we did well to get a draw out of the game. More worryingly we looked like a long ball side for long spells and that seemed our main tactics. We had two wingers (if you can call Done a winger) but barely used them. Fleck and Basham were by passed for long spells too. The style of play was not good to watch but did not yield chances or excitement. It was a poor start for him and we have to hope today was a one off; after two decent-ish performances. I have discussed failings above but he needs to bring in 3 or 4 more players quickly and stamp his authority on the side as today we looked so, so poor.

Ref – Kevin Johnson. Opted to book Fleck after he was fouled; deemed he went in on another player as part of the challenge. It was strange. He did catch him but had just been fouled so was flailing somewhat. A classic example of someone who has not played the game. He booked McDermott for bringing back Sharp (he had played on) but kept his cards in his pocket apart from that. The linesmen were both flag happy but blame Sharp/Clarke more for that for continually not looking across the line. The referee also should have played a lot more than 3 minutes. The moment when the Rochdale lad decided to re-tie his boot and then dispose of his sock ties with barely even an acknowledgment from the man in black summed it up. He really should have penalised that and the keeper also for wasting so much time.

Crowd – Another crowd not far off 20,000 and not that many from Rochdale. The crowd tried to get behind the Blades early but then became frustrated as it became a poor game. Disappointed at the morons cheering Long when he came and caught a ball not long after his howler. Sure he made a bad mistake and I have panned him on here (an internet forum) but that was ridiculous for me. A petty childish reaction from some in the crowd – and I am Long’s biggest critic. After this we lacked spark and the game became very scrappy and we barely even put a tackle in. The goal gave the crowd a huge lift but we failed to build on this. Not sure what more the fans can do. They turn up week in, week out and save for odd moronic moments (Long above) get behind the team and try and inspire a largely pitiful effort that we have witnessed over the last 4 or 5 years. The crowd are just willing Wilder and SUFC to do something. Anything. They have to do much better than they did today to lift the crowd.

Oh and final point; flag bearers? Any need really? Entrance music; Kasabian are absolutely nothing to do with United or Sheffield. Anyone ask the fans on what they might want (if anything) to come out to? Gary Sinclair seems to do what he likes these days. Decent enough bloke but the fact he kept playing ‘his Gaz Band/Tom Hark’ song for years after its shelf life and we had enough of it summed him up. Also why does he have a go at us for being so down at half time and almost saying we have to make the difference. Starting to get right on my wick. I need a beer. Come on Jess.

Clarke 6.5;):):):)

One of few who actually won his battle. Won a lot of headers/knock downs. Nobody withing 10-15 yards of him. He was given an impossible job with long punts/balls up to him but did his best. Other than last 10 today he has been better than Billy first 3 games but neither been great.

The issue is the service with no width or midfield forward through passes for them to thrive off.

You might be right (not much analysis there though!) but there was a lot more wrong today than Clarke. It would have not have mattered who played up top way we played.

Whether we like it or not he is going to play him.

DronnieBlade hates tall players!

And there in lies the problem.

Playing Clarke means we will play like we did today. Percentage football ( low percentage football at that)

In one fail swoop we alienate the best striker in the division (don't take my word for it, ask any booky) in to the bargain as well.

I am sorry Tufty. Big fan and all that.

But you have got this one badly wrong.

Time will tell ........

Fully agree with the final paragraph. At Bolton last week I actually thought thank f**k we don't have them embarrassing f***ers at the Lane, something akin to the tossing rar-rar pig band. To see it today at the Lane was another low to add to the many over the last 6 or 7 seasons. Ditto with Gary Sinclair's digs at the Blades fans, on both occasions I thought you'd be much better having a go at the players, tell them to put a decent shift in for once.

Agree with most but thought Fleck was worth another half point and definitely think Scoogs did improve us when he came on. Think DronnieB comment is off the mark, he is a huge improvement on Sammon.

I'm a big improvement on Sammon.

But Leon Clarke. Really ??

Give it 10 games.

Come back to me.

I agree Sharp scored 20 odd goals with Sammon (and sometimes Adams) alongside him last year.

It is the way we played today that restricted chances to them two.

Get the ball wide and balls into the box and they will both score goals. Play long balls direct and not sure they will. Sharp scored a lot of his goals from finishes inside the box from pull backs. When we got good crosses in they have both scored/nearly scored.

Thanks Deadbat, great report as ever.

Have to agree with DronnieBlade about Clarke though. Give him 10 games and he'll become a bit part player. Don't rate him at all, never have done, sorry.

They scary bit is that after 10,games he defo will not be a bit part player in Tuftys system. However poor he / the system employed continues to be.

No better than Higdon IMHO. Which is a warning to more than a few. I said Higdon was wank after 45 mins.

Give it 10 games. Tell me I was wrong.

Basham has had his day for me. Can't have players with no discernible abilities beyond running around a bit.
Utterly dreadful today; Monty-esque with the ball. Literally everything fell down when it came to him.

He's Darius Henderson the second for me, and I thought the original was garbage. Poor touch, scores one in God knows how many chances, gives too many daft free kicks away and is a right mardy arsed sulking get.

I know who'd have been better, the club didn't have the balls to get him. Shame.

I
Leon Clarke worked hard and did everything asked of him today. Not his fault , the route one style which forced him to play with his back to goal. Won nearly every header and no one fed off him. What shit service he got. Did we have ANY crosses from wingers today ? Did we have any wingers ?

No, we had Duffy whose crosses made me miss Jamal Campbell-Ryce quite frankly.

Can we dock the CBs a point for shit pointless launched balls please?

If we're both not using the wingers AND getting bossed in the midfield, we might as well go 4-3-3 long ball.

- - - - - - NEW GK- - - - - - -
Brayford - Wilson - O'Connell - Hussey
- - - - -Fleck - - Whiteman - - - -Reed - -
- -- -Mcnulty- - Clarke - -Sharp- - -

Play high tempo long ball. Play narrow. Make teams scared of us. It's not hard. Change shape later in the game if it's not working, bringing Duffy, DCL, Chapman on and give their full backs something to think about. There's no point trying to play like Barcelona with Chris Basham and Leon Clarke. We might as well play to our strengths now. All my good memories from United are when we've played like that. Great report as always thanks, didn't go today so I appreciate that.

<< Wilder, who has the likes of Billy Sharp, Che Adams, Matt Done and Dominc Calvert-Lewin at his disposal in attack, wants a physically-imposing striker to complement them - and 6ft 3in, Revell would have fitted the bill.

“I have some outstanding forward players,” Wilder, who replaced Nigel Adkins at Bramall Lane, said. “For me, Billy is the best striker in the division but the one thing we haven’t got is that player with physical prescence, the ‘target man’.

“We have a brand of football that we want to play, but sometimes we’ll need to change that. In an ideal world we’d have a mix of options and we’re working very hard to get that.

There are a variety of ways to win a football game but winning it is the main thing. “We’re not going to suddenly become a route-one team and bang it forward but we need options, too.”>>

I'm not sure that Clarke was ever part of the original plan. Or why did we try to sign Revell?
Why did we play 4-2-3-1 all pre-season and then abandon it for the real action?

It seems like the plan was a main striker, with the three behind being flexible, mobile and interchanging positions. This seemed to suit many of the current squad better than 4-4-2 (Done, Duffy, Scougall, DCL)

Maybe Clarke became available for a small fee and with other options having gone, we changed the plan to accommodate him?

I'd like to see us go back to plan A, either by playing Clarke deeper or by using him as the alternative option from the bench.

Thanks Deadbat , I don't know where you find the motivation after watching that yesterday!

I really hope that wasn't what we can expect to see week in, week out, because it was dreadful, ugly, horrible football.

Basham then had a chance as the game entered three minutes of stoppage time but after advancing well opted to stop and lay off rather than shoot or carry on progressing.
Lacking pace and players who can beat men...

And there's the difference. Yes Long messed up, but Rochdale had a man in the right place who put it away. How many times do we see ball ping-pong around the opposition box with nobody being in 'the right place at the right time'? In a similar scenario at the other end and with the Rochdale keeper fluffing it, who - apart from Billy - would have the anticipation, the 'game head' to see a situation developing? (Basham would have controlled the fumble and looked to pass it...)

Get the ball wide and balls into the box and they will both score goals.

By 'wide' I presume you mean on the right wing? Because I saw no evidence of us having anything on the left.

I really don't know where to start.

Long, I am a fan but that's one mistake too far.
Brayford just looks ill and uninterested. I would give him away to get him off the wage bil.
Wilson - Started well but doesn't seem to have much confidence in giving the ball to Brayford so pumped in long far too many times.
O'Connell - Impressive and solid. Needs someone with pace alongside him.
Hussey - Hoping that was an off game.
Duffy - set pieces for woeful and has he lost power in his legs or something.
Basham - Can't pass. When you're shouting to tell him to pass, he's not even processed that thought yet.
Fleck - Started well but in desperate need of a midfield partner.
Done - Well he's not a wing back or winger. Do Burton need one?
Clarke - If the ball isn't to him, he's not interested. Seems to have that Kitson/Henderson thing about him where he doesn't feel the need to jump either. When we equalised it took him 10 minutes to get back in his own half.
Sharp - Was a passenger until the last 20 minutes. With the wingers we have I would think he should know to run across the front post for every cross.

Wilder - The biggest disappointment to me. So in a week he's gone from seeing what we see to doing an Adkins on us. Where was the passion in your little box. Sort it

The atmosphere was shocking due to how shit we were and no 3rd rate kareoke bloke shouting get behind the team will change that .

He should have told those on the pitch to do something to make the fans get behind the team.

Sadly it'll be the fans that get the blame again by some on here, well except super fan Mcabe.
