How we missed Duffy and Freeman. In their absence I was unhappy with the team selection - not enough creativity.

Basham is not a wing back. Lafferty is not a wing back; neither know where the bye-line is and when they do cross it's from far too deep and too far out. Scougall flits around with little end product, though his header was a great effort.

Fleck and Coutts play the ball too slowly. 40 yard long balls serve no purpose when the receiving wing backs just control the ball and pass it backwards. The whole tempo was far too slow for the first hour. Coutts is playing well but he plays the game slowly and when he is demanding the ball so much it can hinder rather than help us, especially when Fleck defers to him. When he enters the final third he is out of his comfort zone and has very little end product over his entire career with us, though he made the goal last night it has to be said.

Let's be right, we were playing Bury who have lost a long string of matches on the bounce. We are on a great run and should be more confident and ambitious than we have been even 11 v 11. At 11v 10 and 11v 9 we have been almost clueless frankly. With Freeman and Duffy out it's become glaringly apparent that our squad is unbalanced if the manager is unwilling to play Lavery and Clarke as starters when we are depleted. Personally I would have played Done as wing back, Clarke up front and Lavery in Duffy's role. Against a good team that would have been brave but it was Bury.

At least last night we introduced Clarke and he caused their central defence some distraction at last. When teams defend deep and in numbers Done and Sharp are almost anonymous. No point sending high crosses into the box from 40 way out on the wing to those two. Too many times were O'Connell and Ebanks the ones having to play the final ball into the box, it's not fair to them and unnecessary.

So pleased the belated move of EEL up front was a success. We need a Plan B when the small forwards have no space to work in. Mass defences are in their element when they are heading away long, high crosses unchallenged in the air. It needs physical pressure to challenge them and enough players around to pick up second balls. Last night the blue shirts cleanly won almost everything under all that 'pressure'.

Everyone knows I believe Reed could have added qualities last night. I think Whiteman could have also. Each of those lads knows how to play a forward ball to the strikers.

My ratings: Moore 7, O'Connell 6, EEL 7, Wright 7, Fleck 6, Basham 5, Coutts 8, Scougall 7, Lafferty 5, Done 5, Sharp 5. Clarke 7, Chapman 7, Lavery 6.

Wilder's clearly lacking something, difficult to grasp how he could have done so well until now I know.

Ah come on itsy, nobody is a bigger fan of Wilder than me, have been for decades. However it is possible for even the best managers to get things wrong. If you think we have done well theses past two home games then fair enough.

Stating the obvious, Wilder has performed a minor miracle in such a short time but the league table tells us all that we have to keep doing it again and again. We must not drop our standards and responding to injuries and suspensions is one of the keys to success.

Last night's team will be better suited to next Saturday's game than last night's game I might add.

I think you've misunderstood the point of miracles. They happen, we look on with disbelief, then we begin to see the possibilities. We're only allowed one or two miracles, then it's down to the learning curve of both management and players. The very best teams, of which we've yet to become, have off days, so accept that it happens. The point of off days is what you learn, and no doubt Wilder is in a better position to learn than you or I. I doubt Wilder needs to be told not to drop standards, and as I recall, the overwhelming refrain at the beginning of the season was one of, "As long as we, the supporters, can see the players giving their all then we'll back them". Well at the moment we're getting the effort, and mostly more besides. The fact that we don't always score 3 or 4 goals shouldn't be a surprise, but if it is then I suggest a refresher in Chris Wilder's book of football realities. We're having a fantastic season, and I hope there's more to come. A little perspective Woody, that's all it needs to see things for what they are.

I thought this was a thread about last night's game to be honest.

Those who had been decrying Duffy of late can probably see just how important he is at freeing up other players to do their thang now
Him being there gives us a far better cutting edge
Definitely mate. Things don't always go right for Duffy because he's always trying to create something and doesn't balk at playing the difficult pass or flick. I suspect we'll handle teams who set up like Bury a lot better when he's in the side because we're less predicable in our build-up and generally sharper around the box.

Mmmmm, I assume you're not dense Woody. This was about the nuts and bolts of what we're witnessing under Wilder, including last night. What happened last night is symptomatic of teams who do well but sometimes struggle against determined but limited opposition. They made us work hard, and I'm grateful for the fact that good football revealed a gap in their defence that presented us with 3 priceless points. Get used to this, it'll happen again. Teams will play United, show defensive resolve, and we'll have to work out a solution that gets us over the line.

We saw what Clarke CAN do against Chesterfield. He absolutely ran riot in that game. Scored an absolute beauty and was instrumental in two other goals. He had a tougher time last night but he was up against a team who had no desire to come out of their own half. Some of those behind him could have done more in my opinion.

It's a long season and he will be an asset over the course of it. I am sure of that.

The whole point of me pointing out the weaknesses last night was to reflect on why we didn't do better - in my opinion of course, which matters diddly squat, but just might lead to a discussion on a fans forum. To that extent your responses have enabled further discussion but without contributing to the purpose of the thread which related to last night's game. Ah well.

Anybody referred to you as a pedant lately?
