The Blades made it fourteen games unbeaten with a late, late goal to see off plucky nine men Bury at Bramall Lane. It was a night that for the most part saw a great deal of frustration as United dominated from almost start to finish. 21 shots on goal to 1 from Bury but the Blades could not find the elusive goal until right at the death.

As with Saturday, the opposition lost a man to a horrible late tackle with former Blade Jacob Mellis ridiculous lunge on Matt Done but the Blades has struggled to break down a resilient Bury side. Chances started to come as the game went on but good saves, goal line clearances and deflections somehow saw the Bury goal stay intact. A further Bury man was sent off as Leigh committed a stupid tackle on Coutts to get his second yellow after being cautioned for time wasting earlier in the game. However it seemed the goal would not come until a late well worked move saw Coutts one two play in Ebanks Landell who coolly converted home at the Kop end.

Manage Wilder had to do without two of his injured trio from Saturday’s game with Duffy and Freeman missing out replaced by O’Connell and Scougall. Coutts was fit to take his place. Basham began at right wing back and Scougall just behind Sharp and Done.

Bury had conceded ten goals in two successive game at Wimbledon and were on a dreadful run having lost eight successive games. They still fielded a number of experienced players such as Anthony Kay, Leon Barnett, Tom Soares, Tom Pope and James Vaughan with former Blades Jacob Mellis also starting.

The early proceedings saw the game stop start with referee penalising Leigh for trying to gain yards on a throw and then opted not to give a penalty after Barnett’s physical challenge on Scougall. Coutts and Fleck saw a lot of the ball and whilst Bury had 2 up front with Vaughan and Pope, they had two banks of four and were putting all of these behind the ball at every opportunity. The ball was being switched to Basham who seemed to be a spare man at every chance but the Blades struggled to create anything of note until Sharp knocked it over after Laffery’s pull back. Coutts then forced Williams into a save and he gathered at the second attempt.

It was all United and they were dominating the game. Some of the build-up was a little ponderous but the crowd were remaining patient and kept with the side. They moved it side to side but Bury were closing the openings and United could not find a way through. Williams was timewasting on every goal kick but referee Joyce decided to ask the Bury captain to warn his keeper rather than do it himself! It was become a little frustrating as Bury had no intention to attack at all.

However, a golden chance came when Sharp crossed and Lafferty from right in front of goal somehow headed over. It looked easier to score and a bad miss.

United were trying to be a bit more direct and two crosses from O’Connell saw Basham head over when well placed and then an even better cross saw Scougall flick his header onto the bar. This was another decent opportunity. Good football saw a number of players involved and Scougall put over a great cross but Done’s effort whilst powerful was well saved by Williams. Just before the break the ball dropped near the dug outs and Mellis made a wild lunge on Done. It was high, late and horrible and the red card that followed was no surprise. Pope was booked for remonstrating in the aftermath but what the former Blade no one could be quite sure? It made a hard task even harder.

The second half saw Clarke come on for Scougall as United knew they had a man advantage and wanted to give themselves more striking options. Bury had barely ventured into the United half but did have a rare opening as Leigh ran forward and hit a decent driven effort not far wide that saw Moore struggling.

This let off saw United come back onto the initiative and Kay headed clear. The Blades won two corners in a row and another scramble saw the ball cleared. A deflected effort saw Williams scrambling across to keep it out and O’Connell headed over when well placed. It was one way traffic and was a game of attack v defence. Done then headed over before Wright was sacrificed for Chapman as United tried to get more attacking threat down the flanks and switched to a more orthodox back four although Basham and Lafferty were going forward as was Ebanks Landell. Bury were just sitting in and hoping to keep United out.

Chapman finally got to the by line after a period where United had tried to cross from too deep. This first bit of penetration for a while saw the ball come over and Clarke’s header was cleared off the line. This was a theme of things to come. Fleck then burst into the box and seemed to be unceremoniously bundled off it by Vaughan who made no play for the ball. The referee had a long hard look at it but waved play on.

Lavery came on for Done as the game entered the final 10 minutes. The crowd were still with United but frustrated by Bury’s tireless effort and solid defending mixed with some spoiling and timewasting.

With all the other top teams winning, the pressure seemed to be ramped up even more. Clarke nodded home but was adjudged to have fouled his man and also took a knock himself in this incident and needed treatment. With five minutes to go, Bury were reduced to 9 men. Leigh had been booked earlier for timewasting and then his poor tackle on Coutts as the United man threatened to get away saw a straight forward yellow card and his second. So United were facing 9 men again but this time only had limited time to force that late goal.

Fleck fired over and then Basham nearly got in before Chapman’s flick did not quite work. Then soon after a deflected cross was hit goalwards but Kay somehow cleared. It was like the Alamo or Rourke’s Drift and Bury had a thou shalt not pass attitude. Ebanks Landell had joined the strikers and now had 9 or 10 men against 8 men in the final third. The game ticked into stoppage time with 6 minutes allotted. It seemed United had got the breakthrough after Lavery had crossed and it fell to Chapman but his shot that beat Wiliams was somehow hacked off the line by Kay with the Kop up ready to celebrate.

With three minutes of stoppage time to go, finally the goal came. Lafferty and Coutts linked well and the latter played a clever one two before crossing into the box picking out EBANKS LANDELL and the big centre back coolly sidefooted into the corner. The noise was deafening and it was as if the Kop had almost sucked the ball into the net. Manager Wilder set off on a wild celebration of his own towards the South Stand. It was a vital goal and the reactions of the players and fans of the two respective sides told the story. The Blades players piled onto Ebanks Landell in front of the Kop whilst several Bury players law strewn in the box. The final moments just saw United play keep ball before the final whistle came and saw another win and whilst it had been right at the death and an odd night; as with Saturday, all that mattered was another vital three points.

United – The sense of relief was clear at full time. We had dominated the game and batter them for possession and chances but it seemed it was not going to happen. I would say we may be made poor decisions in the last third and the play could have been quicker. We also could have got wide more, stretched them more and maybe even shot more. At times we tried to walk it in! However we are facing sides that are coming to just defend with banks of 4/5 in defence and midfield and teams are barely even attacking at the moment against us. They are time wasting and spoiling and being quite cynical (two teams to go down to nine is incredible really). We are having to basically be patient, keep the ball and wait for chances.

We did not play poorly and for most of the game kept the ball. The last third could have been better and we did not quite make the right balls or get the ball into the box when we had chances but they had so many men behind the ball. It made it hard and I don’t want to be so critical of United when faced with such negative, defensive tactics. I have criticised Duffy but we missed his invention and play in the last third tonight.

Despite some of the above faults we still created lots of chances, many half chances and maybe not enough clear first half (Lafferty header apart) but second half they cleared to off the line, we had a few other good chances and still did enough to win the game. Coutts and Fleck controlled midfield, the defence looked untested and we kept the ball really well. You felt the weight of possession would pay off. Eventually it did. That is the difference this year. We are going for wins and goals and it is paying off. Big credit to fitness team as we are outworking teams. They are getting tired from all the possession we are having and leading to some bad tackles either out of frustration or fatigue.

It was a crucial win in the end and you felt a defining kind of game especially with all the other top teams winning. Scunny keep winning as do Bolton. You get the sense the top 4 or 5 might be breaking away and we have to keep winning. We face a hard game at a Charlton side who have had two great wins and will be a different game but that might help us as they will not sit in like others have. Hopefully we can keep the run going. A draw would not be worst result with two more home games to come against two poor sides in Walsall and Swindon at the Lane.

Bury – Difficult to analyse. They worked so hard and threw men in the way and blocked, tackled and cleared off the line. They covered ground, chased and did everything they could to gain a point. After they got stuffed in recent games it looked like they had done enough and at least they did not concede lots of goals. They looked more solid and organised. They did not make many mistakes and even though they saw little of the ball and only had one effort of note, they banked up and made it hard for us to break them down. When we did they got men back to clear or hack off the line. In some ways it was quite heroic but…..they also showed some horrible side to the game.

They time wasted from the off with the keeper ridiculous. He kept moving it from side to side and was warned all game before finally being booked. After this he carried on but after the other red card, the ref probably knew he could not send him off or dare not! They took ages over throws, set plays and everything else. They also committed some poor tackles and the ones that led to the red cards could see no other decisions. They were often hacking, niggling and making sure we could not keep our play being fluent. It was poor really. Maybe you could not blame them but it made it hard not to go wild when the goal finally came and they kind of got what they deserved despite the above plaudits for brave defending.

Strange that they are doing so badly. Flitcroft came across as a bit of a knob (Clarke signing) but he has signed a lot of experienced players. You look at the side and you think it is off they have lost 8 in a row now but teams get on bad runs and struggle to turn it round. They have a caretaker manager in Chris Brass but you would expect they would appoint an experienced manager soon. They need to make this decision soon as the losing run if it continues will see them stuck at the bottom. I still think they should have enough players with likes of Vaughan, Pope, Danns, Mayor etc but need to get it moving the other way as if they get stuck down there will be hard for them to put a run together.

Opponent man of the match : Anthony Kay. The former Barnsley man was superb. He made two clearances off the line, made tackles, blocks and a number of other interceptions. He has been criticised by their fans in the losing run but was courageous tonight. The other lad Barnett has had a lot of stick also but also defended well. All the defence got bodies in the way tonight. Vaughan tried to gamely run across the field to chase every loose ball and will be knackered tonight as will most of the Bury players who looked dead on their feet by the end.

Opponent Weak link : Mellis. Left United in controversial circumstances to Chelsea and has strangely criticised the club that gave him a start in the professional career. Has moved back down the leagues after his early promise. Today he was not in the game with Coutts controlling midfield and then made a stupid high and late tackle that made it even harder for his side.

SUFC Player Ratings –

Moore 7/10 – Nothing to do at all. Saw one shot whistle over but cannot recall anything else he did. He barely touched the ball with his hands. He maybe had a few back passes and knocked it on but the last two games he has barely had anything to do.

Basham 6/10 – Thought he always wanted the ball but was wasteful with it at times. His second touch always seems to be a tackle. He has done well in this role before but not sure he was as effective tonight. Got into some good space early on and saw a lot of the ball but did little with it. This theme continued as he found space but often played it off or put in poor balls. A few times he got shoved off the ball by Vaughan. Always tries hard but we needed players to move it on quicker and with more quality. He needs 4 or 5 touches to do simple things.

Lafferty 6/10 – As with Basham not sure there was enough quality from him. His finishing was really poor despite getting into good positions. He headed over badly when right in front of goal and lashed another couple miles over. He is a funny one as he is not bad technically and does put some decent crosses in but is very left footed and seems to struggle when using his right foot. At times he wanted to come inside too much and this narrowed the place. It was rather annoying second half as we needed some genuine width. Was involved in winner with some neat play but I think with others will be disappointed with final ball/product tonight.

Ebanks Landell 7/10 – Odd game really as first half fine. He came onto the ball and won it and was very good but then as he moved more to the wide right he struggled again as he did Saturday and seemed a bit unsure what to do when he had it. He had a run of play second half where he made 4 or 5 errors with touch and passing in a row and showed some limitations as a ball player (been ok with ball at his feet in other games up to last two) but of course he is a defender first and foremost not an attacking wide player! Kept going and then at the death showed real cool play and a really good finish when others before him had panicked or wasted chances in such positions. Good things just seem to happen to him! This goal gives him an extra mark alone!

Wright 7/10 – Steady game. Had little to do really and played in front of Moore just mopping up clearances and loose balls. He had no pressure on him and was a just ferrying the ball onto the midfield and letting others do the work. Was taken off when we needed more attackers as the game went on.

O’Connell 7/10 – Ended up coming down the left a lot as they did not attack and put in 2 or 3 really good crosses including one Scougall headed onto the bar. He actually was one of our better outlets first half. Few sloppy bits of play on the ball but he did his job as a defender. Kept trying to keep us on the front foot.

Fleck 7.5/10 – Not quite level he has been but still one of our better players and showed his ability to get on the ball and try and make things happen. He saw so much of the ball and tried to switch it right and left. A few times he could have maybe penetrated a bit more and went sideways and backward a bit more than he has but as game went on he started to be more adventurous and him and Coutts dictated things. Had a shot over and a few other openings.

Coutts 8/10 – Our best player and the best player on the field. Probably had more touches than anyone else and most influential of anyone. He got on the ball and everything seemed to go through him. Sometimes a few balls did not come off but he was restricted by our lack of genuine wide threats/pace down the middle. Meant he almost had to play the perfect ball and felt movement was not there today that it has been in other games. He kept prompting and probing and finding little pockets and all our chances came through his initial build up. Got done with another awful tackle that saw him once again fortunately not hurt. Then his one two and cross cleverly made the goal. Playing great at the moment.

Scougall 6.5/10 – Did alright with a few decent bits of link up and two decent crosses over and hit the bar with a header. Against big, physical players it was tricky and got a bit of hammer and maybe in such a game was right to be sacrificed. It could have been him or Done at half time for Clarke really.

Done 6/10 – Like Basham I felt he was one of our weak links. Two players that give it their all and maybe you do need players like that but quality wise not quite good enough. He tried again and chased/harried but when on the ball it did not stick and was not enough of a threat as Bury sat deep and he could not run in behind. Had two decent-ish chances with one shot saved and another header he should have done better with. He may stay in the team as his efforts do tire teams and it works well with Clarke coming off the bench but he does need to do more and needs to score now and again. Not sure longer term he remains in the team.

Sharp 6.5/10 – He tried hard like Done and actually put some of our better crosses in but not sure why Wilder had him playing more wide left and Done down the middle for a long spell second half when it needed him closer to Clarke to get some of the potential knock downs. It seemed a waste. He kept going but did not have many clear chances today; one prodded wide and a scrambled effort near the end.

Subs

Clarke 7/10 – Made a difference just for nuisance value alone. He held it up a few times, won a few headers and had some of our better efforts second half. Seems to be getting fitter and stronger. Seems a long way from the player that was criticised earlier in the season and I feel looks one of our main threats going forward and gives us something different. I felt when we got crosses in he caused problems.

Chapman – Gave us something different. He at least got down the wing and tried to get round the back. One cross nearly led to a goal and another was deflected over. A few other crosses hit the first man and had one cleared off the line. Gives us a bit of pace and trickery. He is a player that I think can be a real asset as the season goes on.

Lavery – Still been a bit stop start for him but he did make a bit of a difference albeit it in limited time. He had a few runs and crosses and nearly set up a goal for Chapman.

Manager – Wilder 8/10 –Another win. At times we could have penetrated more, got round the back and crossed from deeper. I also felt some of the build up play was too slow and we passed it to death. One of my ‘mates’ called our play shitta-shaka in reference to a League one equivalent of tikka-takka! I kind of got his point even though it was harsh. We were keeping the ball and I think the crowd were patient with this. It came late but eventually the goal came. I agree with all of his subs. I think I would have not had Ebanks Landell down the right again for long spells and ditto for Sharp on the left second half but it was at the point where he just was throwing bodies forward. Bury were defending with their lives and he kept making positive subs and sending more men forward. Alright they had less men but not even sure Clough/Adkins would have done what he did in throwing men forward.

Ref – Another odd referee. He got the red cards right I felt. He had no other choice! He did not penalise the timewasting enough and I felt let the goalkeeper get away with murder. There were numerous other moments of timewasting such as the lad Barnett going down and then getting up and then the sub not being ready.

As the game went on he started to give some more and more inexplicable decisions. He had a bizarre spell towards the end where he penalised us for taking a throw in too far back (maybe it is right that it was not in the right place but never seen this ever before!) and then gave them a goal kick when it was a corner after an obvious deflection. He then also gave two fouls to them for nothing in the final third. He seemed to lost the plot. He at least did play enough additional time and then added odd even more after the 96 minutes (maybe for the goal celebration).

Crowd – 19,000+ on a cold, wet and blustery night is very impressive. Bury brought maybe 3-400 fans who after some real hammering sung their hearts out for their team and seemed set to celebrate an unlikely point until the late drama. United fans kept with the team and were really patient I felt. There were a few groans but nothing major and most of the frustration came out from the stop start nature of the game and maybe a touch of over play from the home side. I did not feel it affected things and I felt the fans conscious of the difference in the manager and approach were calm and stayed with it. Even it finished 0-0 I think the crowd would have been positive at the end. The noise at the end seemed to signal more than a winner v Bury. It was a crescendo of noise after it seemed we would not get the goal and the relief and euphoria was genuine. It was another huge moment (not just the win but what it signified) in the changing of our attitude and the way the team/club feels. We seem to have that winning attitude/feeling back.

Pretty much agree with that, thought we needed a different outlet, which we don't have in the squad, a big strong fast midfielder, who could run directly at goal, without relying on wing play.

3 points, still got forward momentum, hopefully Duffy and Freeman back soon.

UTB.

Ebanks 7? Sorry but other than the goal he was really awful tonight. He's as solid a defender as you will see at this level but with the ball at his feet he leaves so much to be desired and it's clear why Wolves have their doubts about him at championship level.

Goal aside, I thought Fleck was more penetrating (oo er!) than Coutts and chose to take greater responsibility than him. For all of Coutts admittedly very tidy play I was urging him to drive with the ball a bit more. He did play well and didn't really put a foot wrong but it took him 94 minutes to eventually get into their box.

Wasn't it Lavery involved in the one two for the goal, not Lafferty ?

21 shots? I spent the whole match thinking we dominated possession but didn't make their keeper work enough. Also I thought Clarke looked a bit rusty, and posed less of an aerial threat than I had hoped for given his height. I'd probably give Clarke a 5/10 for that performance. Other than that though I think your other ratings are spot on.

It is extraordinary what a football match can do to your emotions. When EEL scored the place went berserk complete unbridled joy and relief, nothing else comes close ( well perhaps one thing) outpouring of pure joy amongst fellow Blades. Without that goal I would have felt a bit low today such are the expectations that Wilder has created in us

Good report that Deadbat . Agree on pretty much every point.
Coutts was easily our best player last night, so glad he isnt injured.
I actually felt we missed Duffy as well because he seems to help unlock those tight spots around defence and that was just what we needed towards the end. Might also be why we struggled against the 9 men of Shrews.

I honestly thought the ref has lost his marbles in the last 10 minutes, before that just a typical league 1 standard.

Thanks for that, pretty much how I remember it.
Think you were slightly harsh on Lafferty for his chance, the cross for his header was just a little high for him and he was stretching (in my long distance view from the back of the kop, the replay will show us I suppose)

Ebanks 7? Sorry but other than the goal he was really awful tonight. He's as solid a defender as you will see at this level but with the ball at his feet he leaves so much to be desired and it's clear why Wolves have their doubts about him at championship level.
The problem was that he was trying to do Freeman's job as well as his own because of Basham's limitations in that position.

Right.

Here goes.

Clarke was atrocious. Watching him trying to control a football was painful and embarrassing as it consistently bounced off him. His first touch is non existent, even when played in to feet. He should be doing so much better in this regard. Also had little impact in the air, which is what he was brought on for and, supposedly, one of his strengths.

Giving just two of our players a higher mark than him, given he only had 45, beggars belief.

Especially enjoyed this part:

"With three minutes of stoppage time to go, finally the goal came. Lafferty and Coutts linked well and the latter played a clever one two before crossing into the box picking out EBANKS LANDELL and the big centre back coolly sidefooted into the corner. It was a vital goal and the reactions of the players and fans of the two respective sides told the story. The Blades players piled onto Ebanks Landell in front of the Kop whilst several Bury players law strewn in the box."

Sorry Deadbat, but I have to side with DronnieBlade. I know footy is a game of opinions but I thought Clarke looked weak and fell down easily in several challenges. He does not look mobile or even partially fit and his movement is poor. This may improve........or not.....

He did offer another option but not really much more than Higdon ever did whcih is not really a compliment.

I guess a large part of my disappointment is that I expected much more from him.

Still it is harsh to really go to town on anyone when we got the 3 points. CW knows what he is doing and we have to accept that and should back his decisions.

Clarke will get there. He was a bit off the pace last night but did give us someone to occupy a centre half when he came on. Another one who maybe would've benefitted from Duffy playing.

Right.

Here goes.

Giving just two of our players a higher mark than him, given he only had 45, beggars belief.

Wait.

Dronnie doesn't rate a Clarke performance?!

I thought that Clarke had a positive impact on the game. It gave us something to aim at with our dozens of crosses.

Also when JOC and EEL were 2 v 2 and their attacker took it past EEL. Clarke had ran the length of the pitch to catch him and made a last ditch tackle when their forward was 1 on 1 with Moore.

Decent game for him up against 9 defenders.

And for the more observant amongst us the reason why Clarke chases back was because, wait for it, he had lost us possession of the football in the most basic of ways.

Yeah, definitely some sort of continuity error there ;)

Merely a reference to two former favourites of mine, the ale and Hodges!

Agreed. Coutts did very well for the goal but didn’t feel he did quite enough of that sort of thing during the game whereas Fleck was running back to get the ball from Moore, carrying it forward, playing 1-2s off the front men etc. I thought most of what we did went through him. Those 2 completely bossed the midfield again but the movement in front of them was sometimes lacking in thought.

I thought Lavery and Chapman made positive impacts when they came on as it really needed players to start taking their man on to drag them out of position a bit. I thought Basham was lucky to get 90 minutes as he didn’t get much right al night and the lack of guile at times with him and EEL down the right hand side was very frustrating.

Done, Bash and EEL are good players to have in a lot of circumstances but when it’s attack v defence, you need that bit of extra flair and composure to break teams down. I thought Lavery and Chapman gave us a bit of that.

Those who had been decrying Duffy of late can probably see just how important he is at freeing up other players to do their thang now
Him being there gives us a far better cutting edge

Agreed. In some ways, these 2 games were crying out for him. When the bus is parked, you need someone who can receive the ball in a tight area in an advanced position and be a bit unpredictable with it. Scougall threatened to get on the end of things including hitting the bar but I didn’t think we had that bit of invention to open them up until Chapman and Lavery were on.
