The Blades’ began the new campaign with a defeat; the first time this has happened at this level after 3 previous wins on the opening day. Visiting Bristol City took the spoils due to well made goals from Aaron Wilbraham and Wade Elliott. United had got back level after Michael Higdon had headed a debut goal but in truth despite missing some chances the home performance was poor. United looked sluggish and lacking energy and sub par performances from many players saw the bookies favourites began with a loss.

Manager Clough surprised many entering the Lane as he named teenagers Louis Reed and Harrison McGahey in the starting line up ahead of Michael Doyle and Neill Collins who had to be content with a place on the bench. New signing Higdon was straight in and was made captain with Alcock partnering McGahey at the back, flanked by Davies and Harris at full backs. Fellow new signings Campbell Ryce and McNulty were on the bench but there was no place for newcomers Andy Butler or James Wallace.

City also fielded summer captures Wilbraham, Korey Smith, Mark Little and Luke Ayling and lined up with wing backs but two up front with leading scorer Sam Baldock joining Wilbraham.

The match began in the traditional August sunshine that often seems to accompany opening day fixture with a healthy crowd inside Bramall Lane.

City began better and Smith fired over. A few fortunate free kicks given further penned United back. Finally United awoke and Higdon charged down Fielding’s clearance before Flynn had a weak shot easily saved. Harris then curled wide before Wilbraham laid off but Baldock was blocked out in an even contest. Reed had shown well and Scougall looked busy but neither side had properly tested the keeper when the opener arrived.

Basham’s giveaway in midfield saw Freeman get clear and he fed the ball to the right hand side. Little had already caused problems down the right and skipped away from Harris again and was clear down the right, He pulled it back and WILBRAHAM met the cross and headed towards goal. Howard seemed to get there but only succeeded in palming it into the net.

United did respond with Scougall having an effort cleared after the keeper failed to gather and then the muscular Higdon, who had held the ball up well, had a header tipped over after a cross from the right. United had started to slowly get back into it and it was not long before they were level. United won a rare free kick on the right after a series of decisions seemingly went against the home side. Davies took it and it was an excellent delivery as HIGDON met it and glanced it powerfully into the corner giving Fielding no chance. It was a debut goal for the big striker who saluted the Kop as he ran back to the centre circle.

United had another couple of half chances soon after but Scougall could not grow enough to keep his header down and Basham shot wide. Bristol responded with a long range Freeman shot but Untied after a slow start had come back well and had enough chances to be in the lead. Harris was caught by Little before a throw in was taken and there was some doubt over to the intention of it. The officials did nothing and Harris after a long period of treatment was deemed fit to go on. Watching it back it may have not been a swung elbow but intentional or not he caught him and it seemed at least worthy of a free kick and a probably yellow card if not excessive enough to be violent conduct and a red.

After an extended period of stoppage time due to the above, the half time whistle came.

The second half saw City start brighter and much of the opening was played in United’s half. Wilbraham had a half chance and then after a miss timed clearance from McGahey, Baldock nearly got in too. Murphy was booked for diving for United who seemed to be still stuck in the dressing room. Baldock then had a shot at Howard before a cross just evaded everyone.

United had created little and were seeing little of the ball so introduced Campbell Ryce for the ineffective Flynn. However, soon after it was City who perhaps for their play in the second half, deservedly took the lead. A through ball was headed down and Wilbraham back flicked cleverly into the area. ELLIOTT latched onto the ball and under no pressure coolly drilled into the corner of the net. It was a really well made and taken goal but poor from United’s point of view as no one got close to any of the visiting players.

City were back on the attack an Freeman nearly made it three after he went past a static Basham too easily. Harris then played a poor ball and City were nearly in again. United had not had any real chances or possession the entire half and made another change when McNulty came on for Scougall as United went two up.

Davies was the second player booked for diving for clearly trying to deceive the referee. This was after an enterprising run from the former Derby man who had looked like United’s most likely source of chances all afternoon. Campbell Ryce has got into some good positions and from one such moment his shot fell into the path of Murphy but a combination of the post and Fielding saw the ball somehow stay out. It had been a poor second half but only bad luck prevented the leveller.

From a corner Basham’s header seemed goalbound but McNulty actually took it away from the danger area when it may have snuck in. Baxter was brought on with the last throw of the dice for Basham and played in midfield for the closing stages.

Five additional minutes were played but most of the game was played in United’s half a City held on comfortably.

United –
Overall have to say I was distinctly underwhelmed at the overall performance. Yes on another day we could have had 2 or 3 more goals easily and it could have been us that nicked it. We could and should have been ahead at half time. However, we started the game poorly and then of course went behind. After this we got level around a decent spell. We shaded the first half on chances definitely and I felt we may kick on and improve on a mixed bag of a first half showing. Sadly we got worse after the break and never really turned up. It was not until around the hour mark we actually put 2 or 3 passes together. We just never got going and they made the better chances and had a few half efforts before scoring a well made and taken goal. After this they continued to control things and other than a few balls across the box and that one Murphy chance I cannot recall us creating tons of chances. Despite this we probably had as many if not more than them over the game. However, on overall patterns of play and control of the game we never really convinced and I felt we struggled with their formation. We did not control midfield all game and whilst they are good footballers Scougall and Reed got harried out of it. Basham was completely ineffective and at the back we often seemed at full stretch with players not covering gaps or getting back. Going forward we missed chances of course but still I also felt we got nothing from wide in terms of penetration and crosses from Murphy and Flynn. Our crossing and passing all game was really poor. Often slow and short or hitting the first man. We had to come inside all the time or hit Higdon. The new signing had a good first half and played the target man role to a tee but after the break he tired and with little service he only had one half chance with a header on the stretch.

I am concerned we have signed a lot of players but how many are real stand outs that can come out and be real difference makers? It seems to be quantity rather than quality to me. We lack pace still (way Little went past men time after time showed this) and in midfield we lacked any kind of control with small players who maybe decent players but lack presence to get into games. The game passed them by in the second half.

It was a brave move dropping Collins and Doyle (assume Butler is injured?) to the bench and I like the fact he gave Reed and McGahey their head but against some experienced players it did not really work today sadly I felt. Still for all criticisms, much of last season’s displays centered on good wide performances from Flynn and Murphy. Today they were both really poor and Higdon had to make what he could relying mainly in service from the excellent Davies.
With two tough away games to come it may not be the flying start we wanted but also may make many fans realise losing 3 of our 4 best players allied to a lot of changes in key positions that we maybe still some way from being a promotion type side. We need time and players to gel but still lack genuine quality in key areas for me. We have a lot of ordinary players and without that pace and power it is going to be a struggle to blow teams away.

Bristol City
– Thought they had a 20 minute spell where they looked poor at the back and we had 3 or 4 decent half chances. They started the game better than us though and second half they were the better side comfortably even if on chances it was quite even.

I felt like tactically Cotterill bettered Clough today. The wing backs caused problems all game but they still controlled the midfield when we ought to have had more bodies in there. They had two up top to our one and in reality there should have been somewhere we had an advantage but it never really happened like that.

At half time they could have been behind as we did have a few moments where we could have scored despite City scoring first. However, despite this uncertainty I felt the entire second half they were far better. They passed it better, looked hungrier and had a better shape and worked numerical advantages all over the field. The second goal was an excellent goal and other than the one let off when Murphy hit the post I cannot recall them being under too much danger really and won fairly comfortably.

They look a side that will be up there though and I saw nothing different to suggest otherwise. Having power and pace like Emmanuel Thomas on the bench shows the options that have and Baldock and Wilbraham will be a good partnership. They have experience all over the field and some decent pace mixed with power/height. The lad Little was outstanding despite the indiscretion when he caught Harris.

Sadly look far closer to a promotion outfit than us at this stage and seem to have done better business in the summer going for quality (Freeman, Little etc) rather than quantity.

Howard 6/10 – Little to do in terms of efforts. He did managed to just about hang onto a few scuffed shots and took one good cross. Second goal he had no chance but on the first he should have done better. It was not that powerful or in the corner and why it took him so long to move to it and then he got there and just sort of pushed it in?

Davies 7/10 –
Thought other than a slice at the end and another where he lost the ball; he was excellent today. His deliveries were the only crosses, corners and free kicks where we looked dangerous (did anyone else put a good cross in – so many telegraphed or on the floor?). Felt he was one of few players who showed any real urgency and got on the football and tried to get us driving forward.

Alcock 7/10 –
A few slices and stretched clearances apart I felt he did ok. Not sure he is a centre back and may end up at right back but he attacked the ball, covered well and made some good interceptions.

McGahey 6/10 –
Not as convincing as his partner. He looked decidedly clumsy at times and I counted at least 3 or 4 slices. A big lad for 18; but he looks extremely raw. He did not make any errors that led to chances/goals but he was not close enough to strikers at times (first goal). Definitely a work in progress and feel Butler will end up starting eventually alongside Alcock/Collins.

Harris 4/10 –
His worst game I have ever seen him have for United. Murphy did not help him all game but his opponent was a wing back (not a regular full back ) so he should have expected Little to be where he was much of the game. He got skinned 2 or 3 times before finally it led to the goal. Got caught with the elbow of course but I felt all game his touch, passing and his defending was really below par. Made one good tackle near the end which was a lone bright spark in a really poor performance.

Reed 6/10 –
Started well and sprayed a few balls around. He also played a few short passes and lost out physically (as you would expect) on a couple of occasions. He looks decent on the ball and shows good composure for someone so young. However, he faded badly and I felt he should have come off really as this area we had little of the ball. A decent prospect but not sure you can have him and Scougall in there as physically we will struggle.

Scougall 6/10 –
One of our better players in the first half; he got around and was busy and also had a few efforts on goal and maybe should have scored. His touch was decent and he was busy. After the break I felt he disappeared and eventually was taken off. It could have been him or Reed as we never got any control of the midfield.

Basham 4.5/10
– Out of the all new players he was the one who disappointed me the most. Quite lanky in build I was told to expect a worker who got around the pitch and protected the back four (a bigger Doyle if you like) but he was nothing like that. Had one good shot on goal but outside of this he looked significantly worse than Doyle albeit on one showing. Woefully slow, he also is quite poor technically and was at fault in the build up to their first goal. He also nearly gave them another through a giveaway. With younger and more diminutive players around him I felt he would give us some bite and steel but had no control of the midfield all game and second half there was so much space for the Bristol players. He also seemed to let Elliott go on the second goal.

Flynn 4/10 –
One of his poorest performances for some time. Cannot remember him doing anything of note all game and his touch was poor. He never got any crosses in and did not penetrate or go at his full back.

Murphy 5/10
– A key man who did not really turn up today. He did not get back to help Harris who was left badly exposed and then the other way never got past Little all game who was too quick for him. His crossing was also poor when he did get space although had had a few half chances off the line and off the post. Need a much better performance from him than that and one where he is more involved.

Higdon 7/10
– Played really well in the first half. He looked strong, physical and held the ball up. A real focal point. Decent on the ball and good in the air. Had one header tipped over and caused all sorts of problems long before he scored a well taken goal. He was a key player in everything good we did. However after the break with little service and him tiring he hardly was in it. He had one headed chance but that was it. Still looks an addition that will improve us in this area once he gets fitter.

Subs-

Campbell Ryce – Did more in the time he had on the pitch than Flynn did in the entire hour he was on. He got on the ball and tried to penetrate and made a few half chances or won corners. Will be a useful impact sub although may get games if Flynn reverts to form he showed pre Clough (which sadly he looked like today).

McNulty
– Came on and gave us two up top but cannot recall him touching the ball apart from to divert an on target header away from goal.

Baxter
– Played in midfield but another given limited time. Seems to have put weight on rather than lost it! Turned into trouble once at the end when we were trying to get the ball away and can’t recall anything happening from him the other way.

Manager rating
– Clough 5/10 – Not a good start. Of course not his fault if we miss chances but more than that the performance was average at best and that is being kind. He struggled to counter the formation of Bristol and his bold team selections did not really pay off in terms of performance or result. Odd that Higdon comes in and is skipper instantly and that Collins and Doyle were both on the bench. Does seem a lot of changes (albeit some enforced) from a side that finished season so well.

Officials
– Awful all game. The linesman on the South Stand side was unbelievably bad. He missed so much all game and genuinely may as well not have been there. The referee was as poor and all game you never know what he would give next whether it was play on or to stop the game. He gave little niggly things but missed obvious fouls both ways. I know many felt he was against us but overall I thought he was equally bad both ways. He seemed to love the bookings for diving (could not see Murphy one but watched back and it probably was. The Davies one looked fair enough and did seem a blatant attempt to win a penalty) for us but when Little hit the floor he ignored that? I cannot say any of his decisions influenced a goal or even the game but he just seemed to have no control of the game and his positional sense meant he missed so much or kept running into players (ran into both Reed and Baldock second half). Like the way he booked Murphy and was talking to him as the game went on and also how he gave free kicks for someone barely brushing someone but then you could be manhandled and he would play on. Really poor standard.

Crowd
– Good crowd of nearly 20,000 for the opening day. Bristol brought maybe 1,000 at best so it was a good start considering it was lunch time and on TV. It was flat most of the game with the new season optimism soon petering out as we went behind. The fans did get into it after the goal and the controversial decisions from the officials also saw the noise levels increase. The game kind of petered out which suited Bristol City and by the end it was really quit as another season of hope and optimism began with a defeat.

No idea how Davies and Alcock score higher than Reid. Alcock had no understanding with Magahey and couldn't kick the ball straight.

Davies just isn't a full back. In fact I'm not sure what he is. He tried a few lofted balls into the box and that was it. He's too slow and can't get forward. Attacking full backs were a big part of our game last season. We are lacking in this area in a big way. I was concerned when Harris got injured because we have no cover at left back.

I'd have Collins and Magahey at centre half next game and Doyle in instead of the woeful Basham.

Don't want to see Doyle anywhere near the first 11

I don't get why Scougall has received a few plaudits after today as I can't remember him doing an awful lot. Overall I thought he was poor. He was poor during preseason and Baxter performed well in preseason so I'm puzzled about Clough's comments of "the players who performed well in preseason were given the start."

I'd be reluctant to giving Davies joint highest marks after today. He put in a couple of good crosses but he was poor defensively and attempted to cheat for a penalty rather than having a go at goal! Hope NC has punishment lined up for Davies and Murphy for the diving. Rather embarrassing and stupid.

Reed seems to be getting far too many plaudits in my opinion as he didn't do an awful lot to influence the game but apparently he was excellent for it according to a few. He was tidy enough which is impressive for his age but he was hardly one of the best players on the pitch.

Referee was inconsistent and very poor all game as were the linesmen. Bristol City have spent wisely in the summer and have bought good players. I thought we were supposed to have more money than Bristol so couldn't we have tried for the players they bought? Wilbraham, Elliott, Ayling all played in a higher division last season and looked very good today. I know it's only the first game of the season but today didn't lead me to believe we will challenge for automatics.

I thought the marks for Davies and Higdon were to high. Higdon did ok in the first half but I was expecting him to be a bit more mobile. Perhaps that is a fitness thing but he reminded me a bit like Parkin who used to play for Preston. Overall I thought the formation was to rigid today with little fluidity in our play. It was still a bit pre season with a lack of urgency particularly 2nd half. Having said that a draw would not have been unfair as we still had more chances overall. I think it may be a month before we get a clear idea what our best starting 11 and formation is.

Basham had as poor a debut as i can remember. It may be a long time before he gets his 2nd start.
That 3 year contract isn't looking too hot right now! You've gotta think he's better than that and it was a bad day at the office.
At least i hope you do. :(

McNulty looks nowhere near up to this level at the moment. Should be a last resort at best. Not sure why Porter got a new deal if he isn't gonna come on when the striker is knackered. Couldn't have offered much less than a knackered Higdon and a non-existent McNulty offered.

Porter really is that bad though...he really is.

Cheers Deadbat.
All a bit deflated this evening...

Calm down, ladies. It was the first game, against a team widely considered one of the best in this league. We had six or seven new players who need time to gel but even so we could have had three goals in the first half and some of the moves we put together were lovely and with a bit more luck we would have got a point or even all three.
Several plusses for me, including the performance of the two youngsters, Higdon causing all sorts of problems despite clearly not being match-fit, JC-R looked good when he came on. Yes Scoogs, Flynn and Murphy disappointing but they haven't suddenly become bad players over the summer and I saw enough today to keep the faith. It was just one game!
Finally can I remind you how we all felt and what everyone was saying here after the first game last season.

Bristol city also have 6 new players who need to gel. No excuses we were shite.

My views on this: I don't agree with us being made pre season favourites as I've mentioned elsewhere. I think it's more to do with name recognition and perceptions of us a big fish in a little pond than the relative merits of Wallace, Basham, Campbell-Ryce et al. I don't think the squad has enough in it to worry the top teams in the division and the defence is a complete patchwork currently. That said I'm not going to pretend that today vindicates my view, it was just the first match of 46 and it would be silly to draw too much from limited evidence. So with the caveats out of the way:

Today was very poor. It started from the top down for me with a strange team selection. I appreciate Clough has seen far more of the squad pre season than I have but today's line-up screamed to me of an experimental friendly side rather than one sent out to win a league game. We've already lost three key components of the team that went on such a brilliant run after Clough took over (Maguire, Coady and Brayford), was it really wise to drop so many more from that side (Collins, Baxter, Doyle) and chuck in so many players untested in United colours?

Clough was let down by some of those players though, even those with us in the good times last season. Scougall was anonymous and whisperin' Bob was just plain poor. He was beaten badly for both goals, gave the ball away in midfield and consistently wasted crossing positions. Murphy reverted back to his pre-Clough form, nearly every time he got it resulted in us turning over possession. Even Howard seemed at fault for the first from my view on the Kop, he got a full palm to it but couldn't keep it out. Higdon started well enough, took his goal well and linked up but he tired badly and might as well have not been playing second half. He seems an odd fit for this side too, a big lump to be hoofed towards. McNulty on the couple of occasions I've seen him now looks at a complete loss in the box, turning chances over and blocking efforts from others. Basham was particularly poor in the centre but it would have been hard to shine when everyone seemed off the pace. Alcock looked OK at the back, although he had a feew shaky moments. He and Reed conspired to take the ball from the edge of their area to giving them a throw-in on Half way in the space of about 2 and a half seconds. Reed looked good in parts but lost in others. His first instinct was always to go sideways.

So, all in all not too promising. Then again we all raving after one game last season and look where that got us.

Cheers Deadbat. Followed the game on a dodgy feed at 4 in the morning here and saw it much the same way.

Alcock for me was the best of an average bunch. I wasn't surprised to see Reed and Higdon start, but to not start Collins or Butler seemed unusual. McGahey looks raw, but thought there were some promising signs. Basham looked poor, and it's noticeable just how much we can struggle when Murphy and Flynn are off their games.

Pleased by Reed's performance. Think Clough is keen to give him an extended run in the side based on his post-match interview.

True but in truth we were utterly crap in the first game last season. Fans are like that, they get carried away with a win and depressed with a loss.

I think people are more disappointed cos they can see the team isn't good enough to continue last season's good work. The bubble has burst because the bloody board won't get the cheque book out. To let a club going nowhere except down like Huddersfield sign Coady for a pittance is pretty incomprehensible. Same old shit every year. The division is pathetic this year, it's right there for the taking, but yet again we're left hoping a squad of nobodies can gel in to a promotion winning team. We're like a bloke who goes down to the club every weekend hoping to pull, but never actually talks to any crump...umm i mean birds...umm i mean femalists.

Got to say this is a spot on post. In the friendlies I saw, I thought Scougs (who is one of my favourite players) was shocking and looked totally out of it. He was certainly better today, but certainly not one of the players who can be said to have performed well pre-season. Disappointed to see Flynny not even attempting to take his man on today, likewise Murph didn't have the pace to beat Little so had to keep turning inside all the time. Davies does put decent crosses in but some of the others, especially Flynn and on an occasion near the end McNulty, get in a position to cross then just swing a boot at it hoping it will land somewhere near a red and white shirt, bit more composure boys. For me the big miss for me at the moment is Wallace , who if fit, I'm sure will play a big part in our season, still think he will spend a great deal of time warming the physios bench. We tried today but, average performance that can only be improved on, those who think we played ok today are just glossing over the facts.

Sorry Newbury, only lovely move I saw was the one for Bristols second goal, perhaps I'm being a bit harsh.

Summed up perfectly.

Agree with some of the things you've said KenM' but I can't get me head round this 'division is pathetic' business. Your not the only one to say it , but is that based purely on the fact that we are the only supposed big name now left in this division, since Forest, Wednesday, Leeds, Wolves moved away ?. I think our three seasons now in League One shows there are no easy games, that's why Swansea, Bournemouth, Rotherham, Palace etc etc are now light years ahead of us.

Totally right. There are no 'easy' divisions whether it's Second, our, Championship or Prem. They're packed with strong, fit lads determined to do their best. Our division will be every bit as tough as last season. Just because Wolves have gone up, the 'void' will be filled with the likes of Bristol, Orient (again) etc.

And, should we eventually go up, the difference in the power, pace and strength that is the Championship means we'd have to assemble the best part of a new team. This is a huge season for us. Get it wrong and Clough (and the investment) could be gone. With every passing season, we're getting left further behind.

That is the worry, its all well and good assembling a squad to get us out of this division but what then ? Should they succeed we are back to square one needing to build a squad to compete at championship level, hand on heart how many of Nigel's summer recruits are capable of stepping up a level, on yesterdays display not many at all To me it is short term thinking not to have recruited players who can move up with the club or is it the board who are not backing the manager or is the investment plain and simply just not there at all ???

Nice one DB. I thought Scoogle was poor today compared to what he can do, and Flynn did nowt as you say.
Reed & Higdon were the best of the bunch, and I look forward to seeing more of them.

I think our approach has been akin to patching an old banger up, constantly trading down and we know where that gets you.

Forest (a team of similar size/potential as us) have sold Lascelles (but loaned him back for a season - couldn't we have done this with HM?) but just look at the recruitment they've made - Antonio, Matt Fryatt and Brett Assombalonga - plus the solid performers already there such as Mancienne, Greening, Reid etc. That's ambition.

(Incidentally, Wendy could be following our 'business model'. Selling Antonio and 'replacing' him with May - on a 4 year contract - sounds a massive gamble. Just 'cos he did it in Scotland...;))

Decent report but thought you were a little harsh on Harris. McGahey struggled for me and was more a 5 than a 6. Still expect good things from him though and he is young so will give him time.

Very harsh on Basham, did ok I thought and had a tough job. Reed and Scougall are cracking players but offer very little defensively as a pair. Thought it made Basham's job a lot harder.

Apart from McGahey, Harris and Basham I agree with the other ratings.

Well there's a lot of overreaction on here isn't there?!

I've purposely left it until today to post after watching the game back & reflecting on it.

The team was a strange line-up but I can see why Clough chose to go with Alcock & McGahey at CB to deal with Baldock & Wilbraham, maybe Collins would have been the better option with Alcock going to RB but then it's obvious he wanted to get Davies in the side for his set pieces. On reflection Flynn didn't look fit or sharp enough and if Clough was desperate to get Davies in the side it would have made sense to for Flynn to make way & place Davies on the wing.

Clough has said he picked the best eleven who've played/trained well over pre-season, he see's the players day in, day out & made his decision based on what he's seen over the past two months. For me Scougs, Flynn & Murphy were far too quiet & not influential enough but going on the backend of last season's form they'd have been the first three names on the team sheet.

Looking back on the game first half we saw more of the ball, had the better chances - two off the line, Harris' effort, scored through a cracking header from Higdon after a peach of a delivery from Davies (what Clough put him in the side to do). They scored a well worked goal but Harris was at fault for letting Little flash past him with ease.

Second half we didn't really get out the traps, Higdon was knackered after 60 minutes and should have been replaced by Porter/Baxter, Scougall for me looks like pre-season's taken it out of him, Flynn & Murphy both far too quiet. We fell asleep for their goal & got punished. Saying that we still had chances to draw level (how did Murphy's shot stay out?!) and over the ninety minutes I feel a draw would have been a fair result.

High points -

Alcock - reads a game well, pacey, strong in the tackle, we've found a good un here.
Reed - his vision for a young lad is exceptional
Higdon (1st half) - showed glimpses of what he can do, took his goal well. Should have come off earlier

Low points -

Basham - now don't get me wrong I don't want him to become the new whipping boy & I really want him to do well & prove me wrong. I've watched him closely over pre-season and he just seems like a big unit & well not a lot else. He doesn't impose himself on games enough, he's not technical brilliant & seems to just wander around without actually doing much on the ball or off the ball, he played a part in being at fault for both goals in losing the ball when we were in a good position for their first & losing Elliot for the second. Obviously I'm not gonna write him off after one competitive game for us however I expect to see a lot more from him over the next couple of games.

Scougall - showed glimpses first half of what he can do & sprayed it round neatly however forgot he was on the pitch second half and overall he was far too quiet. Appears as if a full pre-season under Clough has taken it out of him, hopefully the energetic Scougs will return against Mansfield/Coventry this week.

Murphy - didn't get at Little enough for me and was marked out the game for the majority of it. He did have our best chance second half and was unlucky to see his shot somehow stop out. Not too concerned about Murph as he seems to get better the more games he plays but he was quiet by his own standards on Saturday.

Flynn - didn't look fit or sharp enough & was surprised of his inclusion after Clough stated he picked players based on their pre-season form where Flynn has missed games due to niggles & hasn't really stood out when he has played. Looked like the Flynn of old Saturday and needs to return to his form at the back end of last season if he wants to be a regular this term. Won't be surprised to see JCR start this week.

Overall not too alarmed, Bristol City will be there or thereabouts come May. We created enough chances & on the balance of play we deserved a draw. First half we shaded, second half we didn't get going but still had chances to draw level after they went in front, in saying that we can't afford to sit back & wait until we concede to start playing.

We've got a lot of new faces who need time to gel, I just hope Clough can work his best eleven out sooner rather than later.

Onwards & upwards, keep the faith

Interesting variety of views from Blades fans on the one game, and hopes for the whole season. To hear you lot complaining that we got away with being too rough is music to these ears! We were way too soft and easily outmuscled last season, one game in particular being, ironically, Posh, who we got Little from (he actually crocked one of ours last season). Who's the southern softies now then?! Having said that, another day, another ref, Little could easily have been shown red.
City have got plenty of money although owner Steve Lansdown is much more wary of who he spends it on. He seems to intend to splash it on players coming into their, in theory, best years, and also lads with a sound attitude, as far as you can judge that. The word "hungry" gets bandied about a lot. Some of those players we signed we were trying to get in January (Freeman) so there was a plan for this summer with a number of players lined up. It hasn't just happened on the hoof.
With Rovers in the conference and our ground about to undergo a £40m transformation, and possibly the absence of any "big guns" (with yourselves the one exception) in league one this time, Lansdown wants to make the most of this year. Or next. Cotterill has probably got two years to do one thing: win promotion.
The attitude towards this league is so important, for a club like Sheff Utd, and also ourselves (not least because of Lansdown's money) to a lesser extent. But get real: we are both competing with Crawley and Fleetwood. Two clubs over reaching their potential. If we both matched those two, you lot would be top half in the Prem and we'd be somewhere high up in the Championship. But we're not. Are some of your players thinking the same when the coach pulls into little old Crawley, or even little old Ashton Gate? That's one "attitude" we have had to weedle out here before at this level.
It was one game Saturday that may or may not indicate the way things will turn out. None of us know. Not even Cloughie or Cotts. But please, keep on complaining that we are too rough and it was the ref's fault! Lovely.
Ps the ref booked your fat, Rooney like lad for that pathetic simulation. Top marks for spotting that (years ago at your place, that was a pen every time). Cheers

But then failed to do the same thing to that dirty twat Little who shouldnt have been on the pitch anyway. Dives and ref waves play on just minutes after quite rightly booking Davies for it.

I thought we were all strongly anti all this horrible, foreign simulation thing, like we saw over and over again in the WC, and proud of our tough, manly physical robustness in this country?

Doesn't it just come down to, on the day, you lost a game you didn't really expect to?

You will find that, with referees. The thing is, they don't ref the game for one side, or the other, they're neutral (mostly). They don't see things how you see them, or how I see them.

You'll forget all this once you've got a league win and three points to feel good about.
