Chris Wilder was back at the Lane under the lights as giants Liverpool came to town. It was a much more ‘United’ performance as the team competed and were competitive for much of the game. In the end goals from Virgil van Dijk in the first half from a corner and then a late second from Dominik Szoboszlai saw the visitors take the spoils. Both goals were looked at by VAR, but the verdict went to the away side despite the second goal seemingly a clear foul in the build-up. The Blades did have chances, particularly with the game still at 0-0 with McAtee and Archer both missing good opportunities.

The flashlights before kick-off were aimed at the tunnel as Wilder emerged and saluted the crowd as he was announced. Wilder made changes and gave starts to youngsters Brooks and Osula. Skipper for the night was Anel Ahmedhodzic. In form Liverpool had a powerful attacking line up spearheaded by Mo Salah. The atmosphere was bristling as the game kicked off and early on, a fired-up home side were able to win tackles and challenges and show a good level of organisation. Bogle’s tackle was an early sign of the determination and then Archer got away and was brought down from Endo. Mac Allister was brought down by Hamer and needed treatment before being able to continue. Brooks and Osula’s enthusiasm buoyed the crowd, but Saleh came inside and fired over giving the Blades a warning sign.

Liverpool won a series of corners but United managed to hold firm before Archer broke free and suddenly the home side were in. His pass was deflected into McAtee who was one on one, but Kelleher stood tall to make the save. It was a fantastic opportunity for United to take a shock lead. Liverpool responded and neat football nearly saw them in, but Trusty made a key interception. The Blades picked the pockets of the Reds again and were again on the break, but this time Archer’s shot was blocked after good work from Osula. Foderingham needed treatment after clashing with his own player and Liverpool then had a sustained spell of control and domination but were creating relatively little despite a number of corners.

Van Dijk did have an effort saved from Foderingham and his centre back partner Konate also forced the keeper into a save. Liverpool were now camped in the United half but Endo was booked for bringing his man down as the crowd tried to come to life again. Robinson conceded a corner and from the delivery from Alexander Arnold, VAN DIJK managed to take advantage of the block offs in front of him to smash home as he was left completely unmarked. VAR looked at it but saw nothing clear and obvious despite Ahmedhodzic going down and needing treatment. The same man almost scored his second with another free header from another Alexander Arnold cross but was over this time.

Salah had a weak effort on goal comfortably saved from Foderingham after incisive build up. Hamer was brought down in stoppage time, but McAtee was wasteful and a long way off target on the free kick. Mac Allister’s effort was helped over by Foderingham for yet another corner, but nothing came of this and United managed to see out the 7 extra minutes to remain well in the game.

The second half started as the first finished with Liverpool dominating possession but United were keeping a compact system and trying to fill the gaps. Souza was having his best game for a long time and Bogle and Trusty had both been touch tight on their men to ensure the ball was often funnelled back inside. United struggled to get out much but Archer nicked another ball and was on his way but lacked support. At the other end a cross came over and Salah was inexplicably left unmarked from a corner and his crashing effort seemed goal bound but Foderingham made a superb reaction save to keep it out.

Mac Allister was struggling and had to go off on the hour, replaced by Jones. Konate was booked for bringing down Archer who continued to be positive. Nunez and Elliott replaced Diaz and the disappointing Salah on 68 minutes. United had struggled to create much and were trying to just stay in the game.

A good break saw Brooks and McAtee play in Archer, but he could not get his shot away. At the other end, Foderingham had to make the save as Nunez was in and one on one, but it was a big stop to keep United in it. Osula and Brooks had run their race and on came Traore and Fleck as the game entered the final 15 minutes.

Gomez fired over and then Gakpo was stopped from a good tackle from Robinson. Elliott then was fed after Liverpool managed to move the ball around with fluent football, but the effort was blocked. Jones effort then went wide before Nunez was yellow carded for time wasting as he kicked the ball away. United had appeals for a penalty as McAtee came inside and there appeared to be a push but nothing was given by either the referee or VAR.

Norwood and Lowe came on for Souza and Trusty and Robinson tried to launch long throws in from both sides, but a much taller Liverpool side were able to win the headers. Archer had an effort over the bar and the game went into six minutes of stoppage time. Norwood got a yellow card after a few challenges were ignored both ways. In the fourth minutes of stoppage time, Bogle was robbed from Nunez who seemed to go through the back of his man, but he was allowed on and chipped to the back post where SZOBOSLAI was unmarked and clipped home easily to seal the win. Once again VAR felt there was not enough to overturn this decision. The game was now settled and despite the better efforts from the Blades, it was another defeat, and they remain rock bottom.

United – It was much better in the sense we were better organised, more compact and harder to play through. We were competitive and were right in the game. It felt like we were a team again in the sense we were not a soft touch and not just ran through. Liverpool had loads of the ball and won a lot of corners (that we struggled with), but they did not create loads in open play. Wes made a few good saves, but most were in the 2nd half. We actually had a great chance at 0-0 when McAtee could not quite find the corner and Archer had a few opportunities in both halves but could not quite get his shot away. He did work very hard and was lively though. I thought it was the best Souza played for ages and the two wing backs were solid – indeed the whole defence was much better. I was impressed the level of organisation after he only had one day really of training with them. Liverpool did deserve to win overall but 2-0 maybe flattered them in the end even if we did not create much second half – I thought we were right in the game.

I just felt like players seemed to know their roles and what they were meant to do. They kept it simple and worked hard off the ball and tried where they could keep it and move it forward (quicker too) when they had it. Of course, the quality and skill level mean it’s much easier for Liverpool to create than us and we had to rely on stealing the ball and taking advantage of errors, but we did that a few times. We sat in and kept it solid and stayed right in the game. If we had been able to have better options from the bench maybe, we could have thrown more caution to the wind at the end?

The decisions did not go for us tonight. I thought the first was a goal and Anel goes down too easily but the McAtee push would not have been overturned if it had been given. I think it’s one that definitely was in the camp of you have seen given and was silly by the Liverpool player. We did have a few breaks despite Liverpool looking comfortable and you sensed maybe we might nick something, but we lacked physicality and size to profit from Robinson’s long throws and then at the end the second goal goes in to seal it. This seemed a clear foul as despite getting the ball, he went from the back to foul him.

Overall, feel better about how we set up and with limited options/personnel, we had a more professional and solid look to how we played. We had a few chances on the break and were more positive with the ball when we could be. Defensively and without the ball, the organisation and robustness was clear. In the end, their quality in the last third proved decisive. I am not sure Liverpool were anywhere near their fluent best and the main man Salah was off it, but we lacked options really, particularly forward wise from the bench. Brooks and Osula were energetic and worked hard but ran out of gas second half, but we end up with smaller players on the field to end and you are struggling t to see where the goal comes from despite the improvements.

Saturday, we play a side not at Liverpool’s level, but we have no McBurnie still (and Norwood out) and the lack of striking options is really clear. Hopefully we can show another step forward in performance and hopefully can get a result. I think it will be tough as every game is but if we replicate that level of showing, we might get something against Brentford.

Ratings:

Foderingham 6.5/10 – Not really any chance on the first as he was left exposed, and they smashed home and too many times they won first balls on set plays (much bigger granted). We did stop kicking it back to him as much and that helped. Made a few routine saves but did spill a cross first half but then made two great saves second half – the one from Salah was a really good instinctive save and then he also made the one on one from Nunez. Left exposed at the end again with the second goal. Sometimes he still dithers on the ball or can be indecisive, with both hands and feet.

Bogle 7/10 – Much better performance from him. Just seemed tighter to his man and more up for the battle. He won a few early tackles and also was able to stop crosses. His whole intensity seemed different, and I felt one who set the tone early. Did not see too much going forward but of course we played with a flatter backline and that made it harder for him to come out. Thought 2nd half he carried on being competitive and although made a few mistakes/fouls, he set a better standard overall. Got fouled on the second goal.

Trusty 7/10 – When I saw hm as an orthodox left back against Salah I was worried but maybe one of the quicker and stronger of the left sided defenders and it worked. Felt Salah had a really poor game and only got past him maybe once, but Trusty did the basics and closed the gaps. His quality on the ball is not great but he kept it simple and did what he needed to do. They got in a few times, but it was not constant chances or gaps appearing.

Ahmedhodzic 5/10 – He was poor on the first goal and has to be stronger. Surprised he was given the armband as no sure he is much of a leader/talker and seems a quiet type – on the pitch. He was able to win a few tackles and headers but thought he was our weakest defender in terms of not quite being tight enough or switched on. His quality on the ball been surprisingly poor this year. He seems to have resorted to just kicking it our or lumping it. Hoping Wilder will see him regain some of his form from last season and maybe that was the hope with giving him the captaincy.

Robinson 7/10 – Solid again with some good tackles, headers and another fairly consistent showing. Offered a threat with the long throw going forward and was also able to get to many loose balls and 50-50’s first. Been one of few ok performers this season and our best outfield player many weeks.

Souza 6.5/10 – Saw a lot make him man of the match for us and say he was really good. I might be on my own but did not see that quite to the extent others did. He was definitely better in terms of his effort, covering ground and some blocks/tackles. He did protect the backline much better He did protect the backline much better and just seemed more involved and present in the game. I still think he does not always pick up men enough and also loses concentration. A few times he was just stood in no-man’s land. He did start to win a few loose balls though and this fired him up for a spell. For a big guy he is rubbish in the air and does not dominate as much as he should but overall, it was a better effort. He even passed it forward a few times. He was better but not sure he was as good as many made out but that is coming from a low bar.

Hamer 5.5/10 – Some nice bits and pieces on the ball and got on it and tried to move it on but he also takes too long to do things and is woefully unfit for this level. He seems tired after 10 minutes! He did link well with McAtee and Archer a few times and tried to show for it, but he was not quite able to make the passes/runs needed when we did break. He has been really off it (like the rest) after a good start at United, but it seemed to suit him better playing in the middle. A mixed bag but hopefully we see him be more of a goal threat/assister and carrying the ball – as that last part is what we need more than anything to get up the field.

Brooks 6/10 – Thought he put a lot of effort into the game and was able to win a few early tackles and move it forward. He showed a real enthusiasm and did not seem overawed. Did ok v Spurs last year but struggled v Lincoln and in the u21 game I saw. Tonight, though he did ok and showed some promise. He is decent on the ball and can get about the pitch and this meant we simply had more legs in this area. Faded as the game went on but that is to be expected for his first senior start and he did make a few mistakes that saw them break. Think he will be used a bit in coming matches as we have not seen any kind of form from the rest of the midfield and his enthusiasm and ability to get around is a big bonus.

McAtee 6/10 – Frustrating night where he was a threat at times but then made poor choices after good work initially. Some decent things on the ball as he got into some good areas, but he was wasteful when it mattered. A few times he found space but took too many touches or overplayed the pass. Had the best chance of the first half but could not find the corner – needed to do better really. He then took too long on another break and wasted a free kick by hitting it miles over. Played a nice ball second half for Archer and had the run where he was pushed. Some promise again but we need end product and not sure we have seen that in the higher level – no assists or goals yet?

Osula 5/10 – Like Brooks, full of enthusiasm and running. He chased around and won a few balls or played a couple of nice passes as we broke but he struggled to win many headers against Konate and he was chasing a lot with little service. One good break he took too long and held on to the ball and then lost it when we had a really good chance with Archer on the side.

Archer 7/10 – Through that was the best he has played for a long time. He did not get a few shots away when he could have done and also, he may be made some poor choices but his sheer effort, running and ability to keep the defence occupied was much better. He really looked like he wanted to impress. I thought he kept the Liverpool defence honest all night and kept nicking balls at key times too. Much better in terms of pressing, hold up. As I say needed to get his shot away a few times and maybe too unselfish. Botched the pass a bit to McAtee on our big chance too. However, we need to see much more of that sort of commitment, work rate and threat as he ran well with the ball when he had it.

Subs –

Traore – Did not really have much of a sniff. Just seems too small and lightweight. We need power or hold up or someone who can worry defenders, but he just gets swatted away. I have seen very little in him to think there is a player as even on the ball not sure he is that tricky or skilled. We were crying out for a different forward option but offered even less when he came on.

Fleck – Not sure he was involved that much at all – gave a free kick away and then won one but he and Norwood did not really see much of the ball as we were kind of just staying in it and hoping for a half chance.

Lowe – Brought on for Trusty as he was tired maybe but Salah had gone and we needed the physical threat on throws so could not work this one out – especially as we had a long throw incoming just before the change?

Norwood – As above and he also gave it away with a silly header in the build up to the goal and then completely failed to realise the man (his man) free on the far side and stood gormlessly looking. Not sure he has the legs or gets enough of the ball and midfield looked better and more compact/mobile tonight. A Wilder favourite too so interesting he was dropped as he maybe see the same.

Manager: Wilder 6/10 – A better and more cohesive performance. I think he got about as much as he could out of the group that started. They were organised and resolute and stayed in a good shape. Off the ball we were miles better and closer to men, getting tackles in and denying space. On the ball still very hot potato and little threat apart from a brief spell first half where we broke or nicked a few balls. Hopefully against lesser opposition and with a few more coming back we may be able to show more in this regard. We are painfully light of attacking options and hard to see how we create or score much. That of course puts so much pressure on the defence every game. I feel more confident we may be competitive and stay in games but winning or even drawing any game at this level is going to be another step. Let’s see Saturday with a few more days (well one if they did not train today!) if he can get some better attacking modes of play and patterns. He got a nice reception from the crowd and seemed quite moved by it. Was odd seeing him and Knill back on the touchline – I had to do a double take but seemed quite normal too weirdly.

Liverpool – Did what they had to do. Not sure they played that well or got out of second gear and some individuals were a bit off it but the quality of movement, passing and balls in (Alexander Arnold) meant they could always up it. They were very dangerous from set plays too – so not just general play. That was always a strength a few years ago but even the better teams have the size and strength to be stronger than us in these aspects so the areas we can pinpoint is diminished considerably. They did start slow and we had chances early on and could have led but they gradually took control and finished the half strongly after the goal which was too easy. They never quite put the game away and missed a few chances and then got sloppy at the end as Klopp became clearly irritated with some of the play/defending but we did not seriously hurt them and not sure the keeper had a save to make second half. The 2nd goal gave the score line gloss as we tried to get more forward (Anel had gone up front at this point) but overall they were worthy winners. They looked a long way off City (granted they have dropped off) and not sure they are the Liverpool we would really fear with Mane and Firminho etc a few years ago. They have had to bring in younger players and evolve and will continue to do so but even with their great form, I did not have the same worries every time they attacked like I might have done a few seasons ago. They have become a bigger side seemingly and have some real specimens and physical players who can do the dirty stuff too. They knocked us off the ball quite easily at times and shows the changes in the league in the last few years.

Opponent Man of the Match – Alexander Arnold struts about too much for me and seems very cocky but he is a good technical player and his crosses were a constant threat. He was probably the standout in terms of what he created. Szoboszlai is a good player and can unlock defences with his passing whereas Endo seemed more defensive/functional- think he played for Frankfurt in the friendly we had preseason when they hammered us? Konate and van Dijk are massive as a combo and the former was dominant with the latter scoring too. They are so big and decent on the ball too!

Opponent Weak link – Thought Salah was poor actually and indeed Gakpo and Diaz although their movement was good – did not hurt us as much as I thought they might. Think Gomez is a weak link, but we did not exploit him enough really.

Referee/Officials – Simon Hooper. Another poor day after a dreadful decision at the weekend. I thought he was a bit whistle happy to start -both ways and then he started to let things go. Just really inconsistent. He also seemed to let them get away with things a fair bit and yet was harder on our players. Maybe I saw that with home spectacles on. The big decisions were debated a fair but I thought he got one right, one wrong and one could have gone either way. The first was not a foul and Anel goes down too easily and needs to be stronger and not get screened like that. The McAtee push was a push, but I also think the fact he was sort of stumbling too before it did not help but if it had been given then not sure it would have been overturned. I am a bit 50-50 in that. It is a push but equally he goes down quite easily too. Yes, maybe it is a foul anywhere else on the pitch but you generally whether right or wrong, have a higher bar. The final one was ridiculous. He scissors tackles his man from behind to get the ball. It was an obvious foul and should have been a second yellow and a red card. Maybe VAR had gone home at this point. If that is not given as a foul then what is the point of having them to look at things? Dreadful. The rest of the game he irritated me with just inconsistency all the time. Even little things like where teams took things from – he sometimes let both sides get away with and then was fussy. There were some awful foul throws from them just ignored too.

Matchday/Crowd/Coverage – Good atmosphere at the start with the light show and Wilder back. It was noisy to start, and the crowd fed off a decent start but as Liverpool took control and had a lot of the ball – it kind of flattened and I thought 2nd half it lacked the noise/passion we would want – not a criticism of the fans -think we are so used to expecting defeats we maybe just accepted it was another and did not have the belief we might get back into it. Hopefully more of the same improvements Saturday and we get more chances (and maybe goals to cheer) and the levels go up.

Cheers Deadbat, was looking forward to your report on this game. On a side note, do you have any plans to take them online somewhere (i.e. to a website of your own/tufty) so you can link to them here/twitter/etc? Similar to what Roy does with his view from? That way we don't have to come on here to see your report?

6/10 for Wilder seems harsh. Thought there was a noticeable improvement in terms of effort and attitude from the players. Took brave decisions to start Brooks and to play Trusty at LB which both paid off. I don't think he could do much more given the time constraints and personnel at his disposal. He just had so few options on the bench to change things when we needed to go on the attack. On another day we pick up a point from that game.

What’s wrong with coming on here 😜

Good report--always more fun to read them when we've turned in some sort of performance.

I'd mark Bogle half a mark higher than you did; he was excellent, especially defensively, and was my MOTM.

I also felt your mark for Anel was low--although he wasn't brilliant, he was much improved from recent showings and did some of the basics pretty well. I'd probably give him a 6, although I very much agree with your take on the first goal and his role in it.

In regard to the latter point, I'd love to see our defenders focus on playing the ball rather than the man at set pieces. It's almost a loser mentality to think "well we can't win the header but we can wrestle the opposition player enough that he won't win it either." I feel we're never looking at the ball and always seem on the verge of giving away a penalty--or in this case, getting it totally wrong and diving to try and win a free kick. I'd much rather see us keep our eyes on the ball and back ourselves to win the header. We have players capable of that.

Pretty much agree with all those marks. Would probably have Bogle a point higher. Souza was poor first half but much better in the second. Brooks didn't offer loads but was better than what we've seen simply because he can run.

What’s wrong with coming on here 😜

In the summer I might upload them all to the Tufty Club word press

Got thousands going back years so will try and put them into folders/seasons and maybe upload them there too

I like the fact people can respond on here and critique

Initially I thought your ratings were a little bit on the low side, but then after after giving it more thought they're probably pretty much spot on but just felt higher based on the dross we've been served up in previous weeks.

Overall another good report, keep up the good work Deadbat

I have been giving Hecky 0-3/10 most weeks recently though!

We did ok but we lost 0-2 - granted to a strong Liverpool side but they kind of eased to the win. We did make improvements and not get battered but we did not score - conceded two poor goals (second on the break) and still a lot to work on to win games. Luton are being far more competitive and looking a threat in games v similiar opponents.

It was better but not sure we deserved a point really as much as it pains me to see it.

6's and 7's is much higher than most recent games. At a push I could give Wilder a 6.5 or 7. I personally would have chucked Anel or Trusty up for last 5-10 mins as we had no threat at all in that regard and Liverpool saw it out easier. Granted he did not have the personnel to change it.

Perhaps 6/10 was harsh but I think we are comparing a lot to what has gone before.

Yeah we lost fairly comfortably 2-0 and Liverpool did what they had to. Their keeper has made one save to make and they had most of the chances/efforts and all the possession. I think giving players 5-6-7 is reasonable as noone was superb but noone was awful. It was better but still a long way off being the standard required to compete at this level really. Look at Luton and what they did v Liverpool.

i honestly think we would have got something out of last nights game if we had decent options off the bench.

I think WWE might see various overlapping type things happening at the weekend, not necessarily wingbacks but all over the pitch, we know Hamper & Anal can score goals, even Trusty was overlapping last night, we need goals! Wilder will find a way.

Good report DB even if some marks were a bit on the low side, Wilder deserves a 10 for firing them up after only had them for one day.

Thanks Deadbat. Just looked again at Brighton v Brentford game and Brentford got a penalty for an insignificant contact compared to McAtee incident. That's the way the cookie crumbles |I guess.

I agree with your push for CW to a 7. Thats also for Knill, Prestridge and Andrews. I wasn't a fan of CW coming back but even though we only really worked their keeper once during the game there were significant improvements throughout our play, team selection and tactics. I go as far as to say for the first time this season the players looked like they knew the system they were playing to with no square pegs in round holes.

We played with a four at the back dispelling the myth the new coaching team were locked in a 3-5-2 centric mindset. It worked because the 2 best performers for me were the full backs. How they managed to get Bogle looking like a defender was a huge step up in itself. Salah didn't play well because Trusty didn't let him. In midfield we had balance back. A LCM with a left foot, mobile and physical looking to go forward with the ball. Brave decision to give a youngster his full debut against one of the best teams in Europe. Souza got better as the game went on tracking back after 70 minutes to stop a Pool breakaway. Harsh on Anel. Whilst he wasn't back to the standards of last season he stayed much more in shape than he has been doing. Maybe he's not long term captain material but I saw that as good psychology on the part of CW to try to boost a player lacking in confidence. It was noticeable post match the manager was praising the foreign players, Souza, Anel, Hamer Trusty. On first evidence after 1 training session they seem to have got more out of these players than the previous regime was able to.

Usual frustrations were there about our ability to defend set pieces and Brentford will present an equally difficult aerial and physical challenge. The lack of a bench effectively killed the game and gave a stark reminder what CW and co have inherited. We have to hope Prestridges conditioning regime kicks in quickly.

One swallow does not make a summer and the acid test will be against the lesser teams. The performance last night gave everyone a lift. Even MOD commented favourably on us taking the game to Liverpool second half.

Pretty spot on there Deadbat
It looked like a training exercise for Liverpool.
I thought the same with Ahmedhodzic, looks hopelessly weak defending the big man at corners. Archer was excellent. I’ll settle for the overall performance, Brooks was a welcome addition as well.

Another bizarre week in the history of Sheffield united, agree with you DB that seeing Wilder & Knill etc on the touchline was surreal - Wilders footwear was also slightly strange!

What is unquestionable is Wilders passion for the club, having listened to all his interviews on being reappointed and post match, his charisma and strength of personality is there for all to see.

I was unsure as to whether the club should entertain his comeback, but - and I can’t quite put my finger on it, it just seemed right last night, the tempo, the attitude, the work rate, the commitment, the belief, it was all there.

Against lesser opponents, should the same approach be maintained then there is every suggestion that we will be competitive.

That’s a fair summary. Just thought Wilder did well to have such an impact after 1 full day with the squad.
We really are struggling for depth though and I thought any attacking momentum we had dropped off when little Beni Traore came on - not the impact sub we needed.
It’s an encouraging start but I do worry what we’ll perform like when there’s more of an onus on us to attack. Saturday will be interesting. We saw earlier in the season against Man City that this squad are capable of battling performances, but I’ve yet to see us take charge of a game.

Bang on match summary but harsh markings IMO for Anel, Hamer, Brooks, Osula & Wilder.

For Wilder to improve is as you suggested in 24 hrs but yet to receive a 6/10??

Think 6/10 for Wilder after turning around the worst form and performances in living memory is very harsh.

I was mightily impressed by the transformative effect Wilder had on that teams performance after 24hrs

Gotta remember ultimately we did lose in the end 6 or 7 for Wilder is perfectly adequate for me.

The performance was worthy of a draw, only poor finishing and bad refereeing decisions changed that.

6/7 out of ten under normal circumstances but come on, the last two games before last night were once in a life time bad and you can’t ignore the unreal challenge of picking up that group of players

Basically how I saw it. But i’d give Wilder a 7. It was night and day from what we’ve been served over the last few weeks, although it’s not difficult to improve from Burnley. So credit for instilling some “pashun”.

I like the fact people can respond on here and critique
You do? Brilliant, here goes:

Deadbat’s latest offering in the long running “Match Report” series is predictable despite the presence of a twist, in this instance the surprise return of a well-loved character. Derivative of mid-to-late 80s Tony Pritchett Green ‘Un reports, Deadbat continues to churn out page-turners to satisfy his fans. This installment is a return to the tried-and-tested “played OK but still lost” storyline from earlier in the season, and follows many of the tropes we have come to know: a slight improvement in one character’s arc, a hint at redemption that is ultimately foiled by a mixture of corrupt officialdom and tragic circumstance for another. Killing off the popular Hecky and Stuart McCall characters was a risk that paid off, and it will be interesting to see how the older fan-favourites do in subsequent stories. 7/10

One difference for me was that we seemed to occasionally hit a few of our longer balls for people to run on to, rather than always lofting high to our midgets to try and win headers. I also would have given Osula an extra mark. I think his willingness to take people on and drive forward caused a few problems and there were signs he could work well with Archer. As somebody has already mentioned, if he can just put one away he may really fire for us.

I’d also agree with those who praised Trusty rather than saying Salah simply had an off day. Robbo should be captain. Brooks will be a good player.

One of Wilder’s most pressing challenges is to get the best out of Hamer. Maybe dropping Norwood and getting Souza effective as a defensive shield is the first step?

Thanks Deadbat for the report.

Trusty was signalling to the bench and slapping his legs about 5 mins before he went off so presume that's the reason that change was made.
I know what you mean about Souza being poor in the air for a big lad but was suprised when United tweeted he'd got the most aerial clearances alongside Trusty v Liverpool, so maybe its more a timing of his runs/jumps in open play?

Yeah we lost fairly comfortably 2-0 and Liverpool did what they had to. Their keeper has made one save to make and they had most of the chances/efforts and all the possession. I think giving players 5-6-7 is reasonable as noone was superb but noone was awful. It was better but still a long way off being the standard required to compete at this level really. Look at Luton and what they did v Liverpool.
I watched Luton v Liverpool and the Hatters really gave them a game with Ogbene et al pushing forward.
We just don't have the physical attributes to worry PL teams.
I honestly can't believe that we spent £5m on Traore because however skilled he might be , he is too small to have a sniff of the ball and I think that would be the same in the Championship.
We needed a big strong lad to replace Osula.
Hamer too is small , slow and looks overweight - we paid a lot of money for his supposed quality but his lack of physique prevents him from displaying it.
It's a bit too late for us to rectify things now , but every week most of us realise we are too small and our bench options are even smaller

Deadbat and S24SU users seem to agree on most players, but the scale may be used a bit differently?

Noticed that Lowe, who came on in the 88' minute and who according to stats never touched the ball, got a S24SU rating 5,57 which was very similar to Osula's 5,61 man of the match rating at Burnley. This may suggest that results and mood swings have a considerable impact on forum users ratings.

Regards Wilder and in deed Brookes think 6 out of 10 would normally be fair.

However if you take into account the circumstances that
Wilder had 1 training session with a team that has just produced 2 of the worse United performances in years.
A team lacking quality, effort and any desire to try and score.
So to make big changes, instantly dropping our captain Norwood and putting in a youngster on his debut were massive decisions.
Archer has been poor all season playing as lone striker up front, so he's moved deeper, closer to midfielder and we play 2 up front and this time Archer is transformed, much more involved and looked hungry.
In the circumstances was like a minor miracle to me.
Has 1 training session and we produce easily our best performance of the season where we play as a team.
Agree....we weren't brilliant but the improvement was substantial...so maybe even deserves a 8 out of 10.

Similar thing with Brookes, he played well, nothing brilliant.
However when you think he made his debut against one of the best teams in European football
he was superb, especially in his temperament, never looked nervous or overawed against such good opposition.
He went on a few dribbles, lost the ball a few times but it never affected his confidence as he continued trying to create chances.
In the circumstances an excellent debut, based in these factors could argue he deserves a 8 out of 10.
