According to The Guardian and in relation to Liverpool: “there is only one other club in history who has reached the new year unbeaten and not gone on to win the league – and that was Sheffield United in the 1899-1900 season.”

Never knew this.

Typical United :)

We were unbeaten in the first 22 games, tying the record Preston set in the leagues first season. This remained the record until Leeds extended it to 29 games in 1973-4. Arsenal hold it today, of course.

We only lost 4 games that season. Villa, who won the league lost 6. But in contrast we drew 12 to their 6. We lost out by 2 points in the end. If only we had turned them draws into wins...
Yeah but once teams realised how good we were they turned up and parked the horse and cart.

Has anyone yet compiled a list of 'The seasons we turned certain success into abject failure, often in a unique or unusual way'? Could be the basis for a depressing book.

We're also, I think, the biggest club in Europe (in terms of support) never to have qualified for European competition via our domestic league - and never played in any major European competition.

Relegated with a positive goal difference.

Score 6 goals over 2 legs in the play offs and still lose.

If anyone can find a way to fuck things up in a unique way, it's us.:(

Failure to win the playoffs despite keeping 3 clean sheets out of 3 is also up there.

Star striker sent down with three games left. Conviction later overturned.

Relegated thanks to an extremely soft goal conceded by a 'keeper later done for 'betting irregularities'.

Ahhh, but who can forget the Anglo-Italia Cup...
