Went to Stocksbridge yesterday, cracking game, we deservedly won 3-1. Players who took the eye for me were Dimaio, and the forwards CJ Hamilton, Jamie McDonagh,Jake Wright plus Joel Coustrain who came on as sub. Hull threatened particularly in the second half but George Long made three or four good saves and also really impressed with his general awareness. Adkins was there shaking hands, Deano too wearing a comedy hat. Altogether a refreshing experience, no time wasting, theatricals and not much moaning at the ref either.

Did any returning senior players feature? Flynn, Harris, Brayford, Kennedy, Cuvelier etc?

At Stocksbridge on Monday afternoon, the Blades deservedly ended Hull City's start to the U21s season.

Goals from Connor Dimaio, Jake Wright and CJ Hamilton capped a fine performance from Chris Morgan's young grafters.

United bossed the first half and coach Morgan would have wondered how his team were not ahead. On four minutes, Wright almost attached himself to a short back-pass and McDonagh headed home but he was adjudged to have pushed a defender before connecting with a deep Phillips cross.

McDonagh also fired into goalkeeper Watson's arms before the Blades took the lead with a neat move on 28 minutes. After finding Hamilton with a pass, DIMAIO continued his run into the box and slotted home a controlled sidefooter from six yards.

Further Blades chances followed. Wright shot just wide after good work from Heh and then the same striker skimmed the crossbar with a free-kick before Hull levelled with their first and only chance of the half; there were numerous chances to clear before ANNAN beat Long from an acute angle.

Early in the second half there were chances for both sides to edge in front. Quick Dimaio feet set up McDonagh, who was denied by the goalkeeper, then Olley chipped over the crossbar for the visitors.
The endeavours of McDonagh, who hunted down three defenders, set up Wright to scuff wide on 58 minutes and then Annan curled in a free-kick into the arms of Long.

On 71 minutes, United had a great chance to grasp the initiative from the penalty spot. McDonagh got on the end of Long's kick and drew a foul from Aimson but from the resulting spot-kick, goalkeeper Watson saved Whiteman's effort.

Long was called upon to stop Bowen soon after but the Blades were on top and Watson again saved when Khan and Hamilton combined on the right. However, he could do little about the home side regaining the lead on 77 minutes. A melee from a corner saw both sides appealing for decisions before WRIGHT escaped three defenders in close proximity ahead of slotting home.

Late on McDonagh shot across goal and wide, whilst Hull's best chance of a second leveller fell to Dixon, but his shot skimmed the outside of Long's right post.

Injury-time saw Long make an impressive save to keep out Bowen, who was in the clear, before United clinched the victory with a goal on the break. McDonagh held the ball up before finding HAMILTON in space and he slammed home past an exposed Watson.

Blades: Long, Khan, Phillips, Dimaio, Banton, Whiteman, Heh (Coustrain 69), Brooks (Adebowale 90), McDonagh, Wright (Slew 88), Hamilton.
Unused: Perryman, Burton.

Maybe Eskimo can help with this but I think that the team lists on the OS are in shirt number order. That would seem to indicate that we lined up:

Long
Khan Banton Whiteman Phillips
Heh Dimaio Brooks Hamilton
McDonagh Wright

I was under the impression that Khan was a wide midfielder, Phillips was a right back, McDonagh a winger and Whiteman a central midfielder. Did we play a completely different formation or are some of the younger players being tried out in new positions?

So are CJ Hamilton and Banton still on loan at Halifax? And able to play for the u-21s because Halifax are part time?

If so, I think it's a good idea. They get to play proper competitive football but we still get time with them to continue coaching and developing them.

Think they were only short term loans that have now finished

I'm not sure on this, None of our lads played in their FA Cup game on Saturday. Brookes hasn't played for Halifax in any game this month

The Halifax loan period is over now pal.

Cheers. That's a shame. I don't rate the u-21s league. I don't think it's fit for purpose. Hopefully we can get them out on loans to L2 clubs.

Seems optimistic that, at least re: the lads that were at Halifax. If we can get them to L2 clubs then they can't be that far off first team quality, assuming you're loaning them out to get first team minutes which is the entire point in the first place (at least for the kids, I'd happily loan many of the hangers on in the first team anywhere if it means the other club is paying their wages). A few of the better/more developed ones like Khan, Dimaio etc, maybe.

We must have at least 1 CB in the U21's with more talent than McEveley.

Don't know whether he's still with us, but Emmanuel Adebowale looked like the sort of player we've been desperate for at first team level.

Properly used the u21s should be a step below loans.

The focus should be on development and experimentation rather than winning, so a winger, say, can be given licence to try tricks, turns, step overs in a relatively competitive situation and not worry about getting subbed bc not much of it worked this time.

There's a balance to be struck of course but the priority should be development.

Loans are when the results really begin to count.

That's how I see it anyway.

Didn't he suffer from a broken leg a few years ago. His name seems to be always mentioned in match reports.

I'm firmly of the opinion that if a player is any good he'll be able to cope with senior football in the lower leagues before he's 21.
The u21s is ok for kids but the senior 'development players' should either be pushing for a first team place or out on loan.

I don't believe the likes of De Girolamo, Dimaio, Khan will benefit from continuing to play in the U21s, nor will Hamilton or Banton now they've been playing in the 'National League'.

We are losing huge amounts of money every year and it's time we took a hard line with our youth development. It's not good business to be developing kids who might be good enough for the lower leagues in a couple of years, not least because we shouldn't be planning to be in the lower leagues in two seasons' time.

Born 8/5/96 so he's 19. Next step for him should be a Conference/L2 loan but the signs are definitely encouraging.
Fuck me. Michael Owen was playing for England when he was 19. Get him out on loan at L2 level. If he's not good enough for L2 at 19, he's not likely to be good enough for a club with championship ambitions, ever.

Probably. You're not an SUFC footballer if you havent broken something. (the supporters' hearts if nothing else).

I think that formation is correct. Khan definitely played right back. Heh got subbed

I've seen Banton myself and was very impressed. The sort of strong commanding full-back we've been crying out for.
We could've tried him out in the cup games at least, he certainly wouldn't have fared any worse than what we have already.

Yeah. Problem is, they all look good in the u21s but are miles off when they step up, even to L1. I'd get him back out on loan at L2 level and see how he copes.

Has he featured much at Halifax? Just looked at the league table and noticed that they're in the shit at the moment.

I think his main position is CB, he's a big unit without checking
