Back in the day almost all the media outlets that published football results included the attendance. Now, almost none do. I used to enjoy looking at the attendance figures of other teams as much as studying the results and tables.

Looks like we're 24th in Britain, 22nd excluding Rangers/Celtic. 25,159 this season is pretty impressive, I think this is still the legacy of Mccabes intelligent pricing when we were in the PL.

It's also the fruit of a great deal of unsung activity to attract the younger generation, something the club really needs to be praised for. We are streets ahead of our neighbours in this regard and are reaping the benefits. Well done to all concerned on this front.

We’re now 23rd best supported going above Crystal Palace.

The current average stands at 25,571.

BBC reports do, but you’re right. It should be there.

We get higher attendances than the Pigs. We’re massive.

That article was 29th November 2018. Our home average is now 25,568 (26,849 last season).

It's tickets sold, so last season they were still getting probably 40k despite the ground being half empty.

This season though, i would guess that a lot of those stay away fans have come back now that they're winning a few. Theres nothing else to do up there.

The first season when we came down from the PL the average was 25,631, so it’s almost identical this season 25,571.

People actually attending matches is well down this season because almost every match is being shown on tv.
Another issue is that most clubs give the tickets given out, not the actual attendance.

So any clubs with a large number of season tickets (like Sheff Wed) will always show a big attendance.
Last season Sunderland has many attendances under 20K but they were always given as 28K.
The 10,000 are so Sunderland season ticket holders who stopped going were still added to the gate.

Last week Coventry had 26K at home to Gillingham.
It was £10 for adults and £5 for children, but they gave out about 8,000 free tickets to local schools.
Estimates that about 18,000 turned up to watch the match but the official attendance was given as 26,741.
Last season there was a lot of snow at Coventry’s Community game, puts 1000’s off travelling, there was less than 15K at the match but the official attendance was given at over 28,343 which was reported as being one of the biggest ever in the 4th division, but reports failed to say that 10,000 free tickets were given out, which hardly any actually attending.

Where have the Spammers found 56,000 fans from?
I'm sure they only used to get 20-25,000 - is it just the new ground effect?

United publish the attendance on the 60th minute mark of every match. However many other clubs (especially in the PL) don’t give out an official attendance figure until a few hours after the match or even the following day.

I’ve often found watch Match of the Day a real eye opener seeing all the spare seats in the stadia.

Last season Highbury looked half full but always had the 60K attendance.
Sunderland’s always looked less than half full, gate always given at just under 30K.
Stokes looked just over half full but always given as 27K.
Man City had large gaps, given as a sell out.
This season I’ve noticed large gaps at Southmpton and Cardiff but again given as over 30K sell outs.

I worked with a West Ham fan and he used to proudly tell me that it was impossible to buy a season ticket at West Ham as Upton Park was always too small and there were 15,000 on the season ticket waiting list. Told me they are one of the few clubs in England that has consistently filled their ground because their ground has been relatively small.

West Ham used to get 25,000 in the late 90’s when their capacity was 25K.
Then when they built that massive stand their capacity increased to 34,000 and they used to always average 34K at the old Upton Park.
 
It’s nice but fifty years ago, attendances were really important as they were the main source of income. It’s not really the case now, even in the championship and a couple of thousand more or less than your rival clubs makes a negligible difference.
 
I've thought all season that the attendances are a bit disappointing for us at this level, but in fact they are about in line with what we've had for the last 15 years.

We've actually only beaten the current average 3 times since the 1950's at this level. Last season saw the highest since the 50's and a good run-in could see us surpass that this season.

31,185 in 1952 is our record for the 2nd division.

If we're to regain our rightful position at the top, our attendance need to be at the Chelsea level of 40,000 average - where we were in the early 70's. If we are to follow up on our ambitions the fans need to make it even more attractive. Many opposition fans enjoy visits to our ground why not make it easier and more enjoyable for them to attend ..

I agree but feel that seen as we are having the best season/s in a very very long time we should be nearly selling out every match , definitley the last home games coming up.

i think its a brilliant attendance thinking of recent history & other cities excluding London because that an anomaly its comparing equivalent Yorkshire or Lancashire. only Liverpool & Manchester have both clubs averaging over 25000 in . all the other 2 team cities towns have 1 big team & 1 little team

then in the 3rd tier over the 6yr period we averaged 19,400 even at our lowest 15,500 its what most teams in that league & some league above could only dream of

Only just over 18k for the "Triple Assault" season :eek:

My favourite season as a Blade. I was 11/12 years old, that's the one that got me hooked.

The atmosphere's seemed amazing to me, but the ground was nearly half empty!

The problem is the policy of cheaper season tickets offsetting the much higher one-off matchday prices. I can't commit to a season ticket but some of the one-off games are pretty eye-watering for 2nd tier football regardless of the season we are having. This isn't a dig at the club, season ticket holders are the lifeblood and deserve to be rewarded, but it does explain why fewer people are going to individual matches.

Yes but we are not in league one we have the best manager we’ve ever had.
We have the best team in god knows how many years
The feel good factor has never been like this since we maybe got promoted to the Prem.
Tickets are priced well compared to others.

I remember we sold out at home to stevenenage when we ballsd up promotion in league one and chez at home the other year.

Why can’t we sell out say boro/reading at home next week.

Are they really ? 25 quid ? If the tickets were priced at 20 quid people would be saying it was very cheap a 5/6/7 pound difference isn’t much of a dinference.

At a guess i'd say perm any of:
- on TV
- individual match ticket prices
- 2 games at home in 4 days
- its mid feb not end of season where something is on the line
- school half term
- people only had one pay packet since Xmas
- society issues at large (higher unemployment than back in 2006-2008)
- probably smallish (maybe not boro) away support
- unattractive opposition - Pulis' Boro are not a good watch compared to Bielsa's Leeds for example

It'd be great if the ground could sell out every match, and had an electric atmosphere to boot, but sadly its not going to happen. We couldnt even sell out our tickets at home to the Pigs this season

If Boro was the saturday game, that might stand a chance of getting up to 30k but mid week it wont come near. And Reading on the saturday will be the same.

if we are still in among the top two later in season the only two home fixtures that will come close to a sell out would be Forest on good Friday and Ipswich if we can win promotion that day. The rest will be between 26-28k

What about Rotherham, I was looking for a family member who was interested in going with me, category A*. For Rotherham. Tickets start at £31 on the Kop, they'll be £35 on the South.

I legitimately find that offensive.

I know it's a local team but it's hardly a big derby, I'd be surprised if Rotherham bring more than 1000 to be honest.
