U23s away at Fleetwood

Blimey, missed that one. Yes, it'll be on their state of the art new training ground opened last year.
 
As a 23s follower I still can't help but feel a bit let down with the fixture date for this game today and last night Premier cup game.
For me we diluted what players were available and split them in to two teams with today's being basically an u18s team which was not even our strongest under 18s and some second year scholars who are being released.
Why did we enter this Cup if when we get to the latter stages we don't organise a correct fixture date and play a reasonably strong side?

Again, last night, we get into a position to get into the last 16 of the U23 Premier League Cup and we sort the fixture 3 days after a league game against Leeds. Again having to play a weakened side.

If we don't really want to win these cups then why enter them?

If the club are actually not too bothered about winning games then let us know.
Football is about winning. These young lads should have it drilled in to them.

There is absolutely no excuse for us to be accepting a fixture list of 3 games in 5 days.

Going out today makes excellent wins at Newcastle and Rotherham against very strong sides seem a bit pointless now.

Lastly, where are our first team fringe players when we need them? No first team game for a week and certainly a few need some game time. I would have thought CW and Binnion could have sorted something out.

Yeah, in all seriousness he's getting rave reviews. They were very keen to get him on a pre contract agreement as there were a few Premium clubs sniffing around. His dad played for Fleetwood years ago when they were non-League but beer and woman cut short his promising career :)
 
Not a lot to say. There were names on the team sheet I didn't recognise but even so we nearly managed to hang on. Too many games at the Reserve level . I would have expected to see a few of the non playing players helping out when our resources are so stretched.
Must be a disappointment for the young players to have got to a winnable semi and not do it justice.
Just hope now Reading do a job on Stoke in the other cup, but as Reading are through as winners of the group they may play a young squad.

If you don't stop biging him up you will be accused of being the dad in question !!!

Sounds like the lad is on the right track. In my experience 15 to 18 is a massive time to either kick on or stagnate. Lets hope the big guy kicks on.

Isn't this Travis's first year in charge? It looks like this has crept up on us a bit and caught us out. Similarly, I was surprised about them not knowing how many subs you could have (from another thread). These aren't mistakes I'd expect to see repeated next year, if I were KM.

I love our younguns to come through the ranks, there's nothing better but I think CW will have had a say on who can play from the fringes of the first team squad and will have said he won't want anybody whatsoever getting injured coming up to this critical part of the season and if he has made that decision i completely agree.

It's a shame for the younguns who have done so well to get this far but the priority has to be the first team.

I hear what you both say. Maybe the strategies for the Academy are written down somewhere. But, the de facto strategies that are in place (my interpretation) include.
It's a Development Team. Fully formed, First Team players are very much the exception.
It must take the kids out of their comfort zone. Talent Through Trauma.

While you & I might disagree with that - it's clearly what they are doing.

Playing very young players, above their weight, in fixtures that come think n fast implements those strategies.

This is the first year we have entered the Central League Cup in recent times. I believe that was fairly deliberately so that there would be more games & they'd come thick & fast. Again, you & I might disagree with the logic of doing that. But, as it happens, I take a fairly benign view. Get games in, pull the boots on, look at the results in the paper.

At any level of sport 3 fixtures in 5 days is extreme.
I am not so sure this was taking the young ones out of their comfort zones, more poor judgement.

What I will admit is that it shows our academy has very good players coming through.

I am sure there are reasons why we have played fixtures this way but what ever the original idea was it is clear the 23s have taken on a little too much this season.
 
I can't help thinking we have missed a trick in both of these last 2 games, we never got going against Birmingham last night when we should have played the best available team, something I don't think we did and today was a great chance to get to a final of a cup competition and give our lads the experience of playing in whatvat that level is a high pressure game and experience which is surely valuable learning to young players who in years to come could be wearing the shirt in a playoff final with the benefit of knowing how to prepare and not get lost in the hype of such a high pressure environment I don't think we have got much wrong this year apart from this and maybe not offering a contract to one of this group who seldom let's us down

I would normally agree that our young players should play as often as possible but even so a league decider two cup games in five days is a big ask . Last season the senior development was at under 21 but this year moving up to under 23 made this more of a reserve squad to enable more first team squad to get game time after enjury. Rooney and Terry played at this level. I have always believed that the only thing missing at this level is the lack of playing for promotion or relegation and it is the cup games that gives the lads win or bust experience. Given that it remains a surprise that we do a 3 in 5 days. Must have been disappointing to the youngsters and it is them I feel for.
