And while we're on the subject of "try this before you try Fosters". Hopstuff Unflitered Pils is one of my all time favourite, go to beers. Nothing at all wrong with Lagers & Pilsners. I love them, once you're past very sweet, industrial brands.

The only places I really know anywhere near Twickenham are The Sussex Arms & the Twickenham Brewery itself, which sometimes opens before big rugby games. I know The Express Tavern - but it's easy three years since I was last in.

The last time I was in, he'd had to put a sign up saying (the equivalent of...)
"During televised football, barstaff will inform anyone not drinking that they must purchase a drink, the minimum drink will be one pint of cola at a cost of £3"
So, he did have "anti freeloader policies" in place.

It did use to be a cracking place. As I'm trying to get to as many Breweries as possible as part of "a competition", I'll see if I can get there in the next few months & I'll report back.

I must suggest that at my local cricket club, where there are a few locals who can sit through a 90 minute match with minimal expenditure, including one known as One Pint Pete. In fairness, he does at least buy a pint (£2.80) and I doubt he’d be asked to leave if he didn’t, it’s rarely standing room only.

Sussex is my local. They've introduced a load of keg lines now too.
Not sure when the Express changed hands but it was able focussed after the game last season.
 
It might be an obvious YES! but do the U23's and younger teams all play the same formation and tactics as the first team do?

Just a random thought there :)

It's a NO.....
It's a good while ago now, but Travis specifically addressed this at a Q&A. And, he gave me the impression that he & Wilder had agreed on the policy. The best way of summing it up is - the U23s will mainly try to play the same system as the First Team. But, the U18s will play the system that best suits their development. One very important point to emphasise is that U23/U18 development players often play in a variety of positions. Jordan Doherty routinely plays one of - back of the diamond, 10, or centre back. Stephen Mallon will play left wing back, 10 or up top. Last night, Reece York played one of three rotating up top - first time I've seen him do that. Binnion dubs it Talent Through Trauma. Take players out of their comfort zone. If the first time we find out they can't adapt, can't be flexible, can't think on their feet is on their first team debut, in front of 25k at The Lane - he's failed. At U18/U23 - test them - have them do what they don't like.
That said - U23s mainly set up as back three, wingbacks & back of a diamond taking it off the centre backs. They get it moving, all the time, every free kick that is not set piece, every throw in - don't wait, get it in play, get it going. I don't see the U18s as much - but, much more likely to be flat four. Both age groups change it up & change it about in game - much much much more than the first team do. Sometimes it's tactical. Sometimes it's just stretching them. Whenever I''ve heard them, Travis & Geary express strongly that they run DEVELOPMENT teams not RESERVE teams. Binnion has said - if Chris sends me down a fully formed first team player, what am I going to do with him?

Frankie as in his first name?
Maybe that's Frank Maguire who has turned up a few times in the 18s. I have NOT knowingly seen him. In all honesty, the U18s Saturday morning kick offs make it very difficult for me to watch them as I'll be on First Team duty.

I'm not great on goalkeepers if I'm honest. My call it as I see it view of Amissah is....
He stays too rooted on his line for corners, especially as he is a big fella.
He does seem to have a come out of his box for an interception, mistime it, and have a bit of a walkabout in him.
On Monday, he excelled at point blank, instinctive saves.

As I am a FanBoy, I do like watching Marcus Dewhurst. The fact that he didn't start keeping until he was 14 seems to mean a lot of his stuff is unconventional. "What's he doing there" type stuff. Also, while it's not clever, he is very creative when it comes to swearing at the top of his voice.

This was on a recommendation from a Blade on Sheffield Forum (Paul, known on there as "Poundsworth", lives on the Lincolnshire Coast, in case any of you know him), anyway, it's a big old traditional pub that has basically built a brewery in the car park. The owner had about 10+ beers on hand pull, plus his own keg stuff. He had Sky sports on TV, and did pub grub.

It was quite and eye opener to come back from the match (Nick Blackman scored the only goal, George Long was subbed into the net and pulled off some great saves) and walk in, to find it full of West Ham and Arsenal fans, all watching the late kick off game on TV. The atmosphere was fine, and even wearing SUFC gear, we didn't feet threatened.

Anyway, after a night out in London, we got back just as the landlord was locking up (we had access to the guest rooms via another door, but I wanted to get a last pint in), he had rung the bell for "Time", but as the pub was almost empty, he asked what we wanted, so it was a beer for me and glass of wine for the missus.

While I was drinking, we got chatting and he said how all the young lads in area would come in and order Fosters (or some such lager) and the landlord would say, "sure, but before I get it you, why don't you try a half of our own lager, on the house" of course they never say no to a free drink, and he said 9 times out of 10, he converted them to his in-house lager, and they continued to drink it every time they went in.

I finished my pint and was about to head to bed when he said, "which of my beers did you like the best today?", so I pointed it out, and he said "have one on me", so it was another round of drinks for me and the missus. While I was drinking it he said, "well if you like that style of beer, you will like this", and poured us both more free drinks.

As this was almost finished, he pointed to a pump and said, "did you manage to try that one this afternoon, before the match?, it ran out but I have just put it back on, have one on me......"

Anyway, I hope he is still doing well, it was a proper old boozer and his beers were good. I think the most expensive one was 2.40, not bad in London!

It's a tough one. Both have rough edges. Marcus is sort of more experienced. He's been at EUROs & on tours with England Age Groups - although he's not really been first choice. Both have had simple, short forays into local non league clubs. I haven't really seen all that much of Amissah. I'll put Marcus ahead on that "basis".

Ta, pal. Didn't know Amissah had been out into non-league.
Interesting that he got a contract until 2021 (couldn't find anything about Dewhurst's deal).

William IV, Leyton, Brodie's Beers Update

I'm 99% convinced that Brodie's Beers are no longer brewed at the William IV and that the pub has changed hands. My mate from Stratford tells me (again) that the pub is unrecognisable from it's former self.

I don't really know much about birthdays & ages. Obvs, if you're putting a piece together - best players at club X in age group Y, someone, anyone, has got to be in it. So, I'm not sure who Frankie's competition would be. I've seen more of him now than when I made my previous comments. I can see why he gets this accolade. He's workhorse midfield. Box to Box. He's not one of these eye catching Diego or Brooks players. But, he's got a lot going for him. Great engine. Simple & accurate approach to getting the ball & playing it. Small, tough, tenacious player. A Slater. A Gilmour.
