ALBION's PL2 side were undone by a stoppage time goal to lose 1-0 against Sheffield United under-23s in the Premier League Cup.

United had the first real opportunity of the game on 10 minutes when Tyler Smith's shot was pushed around the post by Brad House.

Albion then had a chance of their own in first half stoppage time as the ball fell to Nick Clayton-Phillips on the edge of the box, but his powerful drive was saved by Hugo Warhurst.

After the break it was much the same, with House again making a good save to keep out another effort from Smith.

Regan Slater then hit the bar for The Blades with just over quarter of an hour to go, and substitute Jamie Soule saw his header float inches wide for Albion not long after.

Four minutes into stoppage time United stole the win thanks to a long-range shot from Nathan Thomas that curled into the top corner.

ALBION: House, Melbourne, Martinez, Jameson, Soleman; Brown, Bradley (Wilding 60); Tulloch, Azaz (Soule 80), McCourt (Clayton-Phillips 45); Pierce.

Substitutes: Przybeck, Harmon.

The format of this cup explained:

The new competition is in the UEFA Champions League style with 32 clubs in the main group stage, replacing the straight knockout in the U21 Premier League Cup. Like Premier League 2, it will be contested between Under-23 teams, with each side allowed three over-age outfield players and a goalkeeper born before 1 January 1994. The format is as follows:

  • Qualifying stage With more than 32 clubs enterting the 2017/18 competition, a qualifying knock-out stage took place between Category 3 and 4 clubs to determine who joins Category 1 and 2 sides in the Group stage
  • Group stage The tournament will be split into eight groups of four clubs, with each team playing their opposing clubs home and away. The top two teams advance to the knockout stage.
  • Knockout stage The last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will all be one-off knockout ties. If the ties are level after 90 minutes, they go to extra-time and then penalties if the teams still can't be separated.
