Trevor Hockey. Limited by the standards of the day, but an infinitely better footballer than Jones and Montgomery combined (not difficult; so am I). Not only that, Harris surrounded him with players of talent and style. A great blend.

Bassett, on the other hand, had Brian Deane and surrounded him with Hampstead Heath Sunday leaguers and has-beens. Classically he signed useless lump Jones and past-it Marwood on the same day. For Dinosaur Dave, style was something you climbed over on a country walk; flair, half a pair of bell-bottoms and talent an ancient coin.

Once other teams learned to cope with his simplistic, ugly, crude but for a while effective, brand of "football" and particularly once Deane left, he hadn't a clue.

Right man at the right time was our Dave, but his legacy has scarred the club for decades.

Addendum:

Nearly forgot: Wally Downes. Wally Fucking Downes!!! And they criticise NA for Hammond? Wally Fucking Downes.

Conveniently leaves out Tony Agana, Glynn Hodges, Dane Whithouse.

I take it you didn't go or have followed their success through the season?

You may struggle to get excited but I turned up as did 4,000 others and enjoyed a competitive match. :)

I have to be honest I expected better in terms of the overall perfomance and result. There was some decent performances but mostly from the younger lads. I am unsure Wilder will be salivating at including too many of them next season Huddersfield had a much younger in experience terms squad. We included many first team squad members and still could not win. Two finals in a week is great but we lost them both which seems to be the united way. However the bigger picture is some good young kids (I think the under 18's excite me more). I am unconvinced any of Whiteman, Kelly, Kennedy, Reed, Brooks, De Girolamo etc who are ahead of all of the rest in age and experience will be first team regulars in a side going for promotion.

Still it was much better than last Sunday. That is not hard mind.

Aww, not pretty enough for the gentrified class?

I'm not sure Adams is capable of producing anything much on any given day. Fair enough he has potential which we have seen from time to time, but we also hear of negative matters too. If he thinks he's too good for the U-21's then he should ask his team mates today whether they might have been better without him.

His football brain is also a bit dim.

Needs someone to teach him that has done it before for us. Isn't Deano supposed to be advising our strikers at the moment?

I haven't seen Kelly or Brooks or enough of Whiteman but, unlike you, I am absolutely convinced about Kennedy, Reed and De Juve...

What was the name of the short guy who played for us in 1971, black hair and beard, it was his job to breath fire in midfield and when he got the ball give it to Currie?
He was instrumental in getting us up.
Just can't think of his name at the moment.

Trevor Montgomery?

John Harris didn't surround Hockey with stylish players, they were already there. He added Hockey to the existing team and it did the trick.
Bert remembers him very well, he saw every home game Hockey played and most of the aways. Without him we would never have gone up.
For every master craftsmen there needs to be a hod carrier.

TK won every header going and put in some excellent tackles. Thought that most of them showed good promise. DDG much more of a threat than Che today.

Son of an Orgreave coal miner; Grandson of an Orgreave coalminer. Lifelong socialist. Brought up the right way on football played the right way: with a touch of class.

Same background, just replace coal miner with steelworker.
And I still maintain that the right way is to get the ball in the net. The rules seem to concur....

He also made a terrible back pass they nearly scored from and lost his man twice on both goals.

I enjoyed the game. Pity we couldn't take it into extra time and possibly pens (for the drama).

Most impressive performances for me were by Kennedy, Brooks and Kelly.

Most disappointing Adams and Diego. Possibly because they have the biggest reputations.

We can't base the first team around these lads but they should be able to plug short-term holes in the squad, now emergency loans aren't an option.

It gives us a string to our bow that our Divisional rivals don't have.

If it ain't there you can't teach it. Game time helps but the brain can't be added.

The lad is not a striker IMO, he's a No.10 or a wide attacker in 4-2-3-1. He needs space to get the ball under control and to think.

Really liked Semple and Gilmour. Both 16 or 17 and played as though much older.
Kennedy was great for me although I thought Adams and Reed were poor.....
Good match in the sun

Oh and for good measure Turnbull was there also!

Maybe passing on his scouting book! I thought he had the push with our (ex) leader?

He was there though! Make of that what you will.

There was I thinking the true Blades tradition was Tony Currie, Alan Woodward, Gil Reece, Len Badger, Willie Carlin, Colin Addison and a host of other footballers. Seems I was wrong: it's Vinnie Jones and Nick Montgomery.

Hang your head in shame Bassett.
David...excellent manager.
Pal of Wilder.

"dem blades"....

Funny, always thought that a belittling term used by the pigs across the road. Not something I expect to see to see describe the best club and fans in the city on a blades forum...

Without wanting to beat Adkins with yet another stick (now that he's thankfully gone), Terry Kennedy has been playing regularly for the u21s in the last few weeks and today has put in his usually whole hearted display. That's what has been missing in the team this season (and I dare say the season before) and if he's been fit enough (which he has) he should have been getting starts in the first team over the last couple of months. I've got a feeling if he can prove his fitness TK (he even has the same initials as a similar gritty Blades defender from 30/40 years ago) might just get himself a new contract under Wilder.

Of the rest today, Whiteman was probably the stand out and looks as though he might make a decent player, very good at the defensive side of the game.

I'll be taking my 4 year old to her first ever game at the Lane tomorrow, my betting is she'll get bored with it after 10 minutes (she lasted 20 minutes at Scarborough cricket last summer but I think that was down to the chippy tea), which is why I'm taking our lass to entertain her when boredom sets in. She's probably too young to go really but I'm thinking get her into United early ... before she knows any better!

12 minutes in "I'm bored", 18 minutes in "I want to go home", surprisingly we made the full 90 minutes!

It is so difficult to make it, from the youth side that did so well against Manchester United in 2011, only Maguire and Long have really made progress. From yesterday's performance I would say maybe the centre half, Whiteman and Brooks if he bulks up.

Sure I read Terry Kennedy had been released? Is that on hold due to Wilder incoming?

you remember them don't you? Harpo, Groucho, Chico and Cummo?

Nice day out in the sun, three great beers (out of the five on offer) in the Railway Inn, cracking little boozer, the young lad is doing a great job (youngest landlord in Sheffield?), so much so that me and Mrs G went home, quick change and shower and straight out to carry on having a few drinks.

The young lads did a decent job, considering some of them had already played in the Under 18's game earlier in the week.

Huddersfield had some good players, very strong number 10 (bearded lad with the potty mouth....), and a very tall number 11, both strong and quick. Small ginger haired lad on the wing was good and the keeper was good as well.

Don't want to be too negative to youngsters learning their trade but thought Che was clumsy, terrible first touch. For me, he is not a striker, he would be much better as a winger or attacking midfielder, running straight at goal behind a front two. He has strength, no doubt, and a powerful shot, but often runs into two or three defenders and loses the ball.

Diego is classy but needs to be a team player, too often trying to do it all himself, unlucky not to score though.

Brooks looked very skilful, has pace and tricky feet, needs a few more inches in height and a few more pounds in weight.

Kennedy made one poor pass back to Ramsdale, but the keeper dealt with it. Other than that he was very vocal, solid in the tackle and won most headers (including a cracker at goal).

Whiteman had a good game, so did the number 3 left back (is he Kelly?), stocky lad, strong and gets forward.

Not seen enough of the youngsters to know them all by name, but liked what I saw.
